Some of the best, most skillful bike repair in town -- and a great place to test ride and select an e-bike or a cargo bike. I purchased my Tern GSD here, and have had it and many other cycles serviced here many times. They've always done right by me. They were fantastic for the bike purchase: they let me spend hours test riding different models, and their extensive advice about configuring the Tern was 100% spot on -- from big stuff like the tradeoffs between rear rack / seat options down to tiny details like getting a quick-release key clip on my keyring for the wheel lock key. Wait times for a full service can be long: schedule in advance! You may find cheaper tune-ups elsewhere, but at Perennial you'll get more than your money's worth. They've always been really thorough and thoughtful, tracing subtle noise issues to the root (like the fact that I had the front and back wheels swapped on a bike where they're actually infinitesimally different sizes!). They've made some preventative suggestions that were spot on, such as a nonstandard front mud flap to protect the e-bike motor in winter riding. It's a small shop, and the accessory selection is pretty small. If you want a helmet, for example, you might find more choices elsewhere. But if you want to purchase or service a bike, this is a great place! read more

I have been a longtime customer of Perennial Cycle and have spent a significant amount of money here over the years, including purchasing a Yuba Spicy Curry and accessories totaling at least $7,000. Most recently, I came in with my daughter on my Tern HSD to buy several accessories: a Tern Captain's Chair, Tern front loader basket, Tern saddle, and a Yuba Crescent handlebar. The total after tax was $643.12. I rode the bike there specifically because these are cargo bike accessories and fit matters. After purchasing them, I asked whether the shop could install them, since the items clearly would not fit on the bike otherwise and I needed to get home with my daughter. I did not receive a clear answer about whether installation was available, whether there would be a fee, or whether they had time to do it that day. Instead, the interaction became confusing and uncomfortable. I was willing to install the parts myself on site, and I had an Allen wrench with me. I only needed to borrow a 10 mm wrench briefly to hold the nuts that came with the accessories. From across the store, a mechanic I had not interacted with shouted that they "don't rent out tools for stuff like that." I explained that I had just spent over $600 in the store, had spent thousands there previously, and simply needed a basic tool for a short time so I could safely get home with the accessories I had just purchased. The salesperson still could not give me a clear answer and seemed not to understand what tool I was asking for. I ultimately said that I could either return the items or borrow the tool for about 20 minutes. They refused to lend me the tool, so I returned the entire purchase and left. What bothered me most was not just the refusal. It was the lack of clear communication, the dismissive tone, and the unwillingness to help solve a very basic problem for a customer who had just made a substantial purchase and had a child with them. I have worked in bike shops myself, and my experience has always been that shops help customers with newly purchased accessories, especially when the issue is as simple as installing a few bolts or briefly lending a common hand tool. I left feeling like my business and loyalty did not matter. I expected much better from a shop that specializes in exactly these kinds of bikes and accessories. read more

The staff is always really nice and they pumped air in my tires for free which was nice! They told me with my bikes they couldn't do anything more than that which was a little strange as it's a pretty main stream mountain bike. So i'd only go here for repair if you have like a street bike/cruiser. Felt like everything was very pricey for what it was worth. Good quality but I found stuff like a bike lock or phone stand for like less than 50% of what they charged here. I stopped by this place on the way home today. It used to be called Calhoun Cycle until the ultra-liberals decided to try and erase John C. Calhoun. You know what you cannot erase? History. I walked in and took a look-see, apparently walking into a restricted area. You would think that they would put up a wall with a door or at least a sign. Anyways, I was reprimanded and I apologized. The bikes on display were sparse and ultra high end. Not even a moderate selection by any means and very few accessories. I got the feeling that this was more of a yuppie bike grab and fix-it shop. I will not shop here. The sales clerks alone soured me on that, not once acknowledging me. This is one more business that needs to be driven out of Uptown, to make way for others that may have something more to offer. An alternative for our Yelpers is to go to an Eric's Bike Shop. I called to see if they could check out my Ice trike for a vibration in my front wheels when I take both hands off the steering. I spoke to Hunter a mechanic who walked me through what to look at with very clear instructions to determine if the trike required service. After 10 minutes a very patient discussion it became clear that problem is inherent in the old trike and the solution (besides keeping one hand on the controls) is an easy fix which can wait until I bring it in for a tune up. I've been going to this shop for 20 years. The mechanics are craftspeople, highly skilled, excellent communicators and pretty darn friendly. I have had my mountain bike, gravel bike & road bike serviced by them under many different configurations. They always take the time to explain my options and offer suggestions. I've been frequenting Perennial Cycle for about 25 years mainly for tires, tubes, and wheels for my recumbent bicycle. I've had several wheels built by their wheel smiths using Velocity rims with excellent results every time. Their wheels have always put up with numerous 300-500 mile loaded tours, the rough roads of Duluth and northern Minnesota, to the rural roads of south eastern Wisconsin, and now the awesome Loop bike trail system of Tucson Arizona. I stopped in with a bike that needed new tires and some repairs last night. The staff that helped me were really nice and patient. The woman took the time to explain pros and cons of different tire options for me. I agreed to get new tires and a tune up and left my bike with them. Then I had second thoughts about my decision because my budget is really tight this month. So, I called this morning to ask if they had done anything yet and if I could change some of my order and the guy on the phone was really understanding and supportive and said they hadn't started work on it yet so I could even just come pick my bike up and take time to decide what I wanted to do. He didn't pressure me at all to leave my bike with them and he didn't seem judgmental while discussing cheaper options for me. I'm easily prone to feeling guilty and embarrassed about trying to cut costs so I super appreciate that I felt safe to discuss more affordable options with the staff here. :) read more

I'm a cycling enthusiast, so Perennial is one of many shops I frequent. The fact that there is a Dunn Brothers colocated in the building adds to my positive feelings. I like coffee. A most recent purchase of an e-trike made by ICE, turned out well. It's the Adventure model and really a smooth, well engineered machine. Perennial staff were well versed on the details and the bike mechanic as well as the owner got involved in setting the trike up. They know their products and did a great job preparing the trike for pickup. The shop is small and cozy. They carry a good selection of e-bikes and nice quality trikes as well as accessories. They also specialize a bit in the fascinating world of electric hubs for Cycle lighting and recharging options. The staff is friendly and helpful. Very knowledgeable staff, good selection of parts and accessories, and speedy service. Before working with Perennial I received an estimate of more than $300 worth of repairs to my bike. I decided to look for a second opinion and I am real glad I did. When I brought the bike to Perennial the staff immediately noticed that a part on my bike had been recalled, that they could request the part from the manufacturer and would install it for free since it was an issue of safety. With recall fix and a replacement of my brakes my total bill was only $120, over 50% less than the original estimate. It's hard to find a mechanic you can trust, but Perennial definitely can be trusted. read more

Had a flat tire and took it in. The dude found no holes or tears in the inner tube. He put it back in and just replaced one little part, cost me less than $20 with the part. My husband ordered a Dahon Brisa over the phone for me after searching on line. This was the 2011 model and wasn't available locally. They were very knowledgeable and helpful and got it shipped the very next day. When it arrived it had some scratches from shipment. They quickly offered to take it back for a full refund or as an alternative offered to send some touch up paint and a small credit against the purchase price. I love this shop for a variety of reasons! They built me a bike this past spring that is absolutely beautiful and fits my life to a tee. I've also rented Brompton bicycles from them on numerous occasions (try one, you'll love it) and I was privy to my dad's purchase of a folding electric bike. Just brought my bike in and asked about a tune-up. After the guy working there told me it was about a two-week wait, he asked to see my bike. He took a minute to look it over and said it'd be just fine for a couple months once the tires were filled, which he did for me. The whole time he was sharing knowledge about my brand and it's history. Really nice guy. I appreciate that he didn't try to sell me anything, just took 5 minutes to help me out honestly. My first review still stands for my previous experiences with this shop leading up to the past few months. I've now gone into the shop a few times with very off-putting experiences with staff. The first time, a couple of months ago, I walked in to buy a denim brooks saddle as a gift for someone. He was jealous of the saddle I had, and I knew the exact model I wanted to get for him, so I picked it up and went to the register. This was the exchange. Salesperson: "are you sure you want this model?" Me: "Yes." S:"Do you want to test ride it?" Me:"No. I want this one." S:"Well it's kinda weird for someone to just walk in and buy a Brooks saddle without even trying it." Me:"I have another of this same model already, I know this is the one I want." S:"Ohh well then. Just seems like an impulse buy." Never mind that walking into a shop to buy one specific thing is the OPPOSITE of an impulse buy, but if you want someone to NOT buy a $220 saddle from you, this is how to do it. I left extremely frustrated, but I bought the saddle because I didn't want to call all over to find it somewhere else. Had I had more time that day, they would have lost that sale. A few weeks later, my rear tire on one of my bikes was seeing its last days, so I decided I would try again at this shop. There was a different salesperson so I assumed it would be okay. Walking in, I was at first ignored. I walked over to where the tubes and tires were and picked up a couple of tubes, didn't see the size tire I wanted so I finally asked the girl at the front. Instead of saying "no we don't have that size" she said "well... most people like this size better, it doesn't matter if your tires don't match" and a bunch of other shit, ignoring my "ok I'll go somewhere else, it will bother me if my tires are two different sizes," etc. I put the tubes back and called Penn Cycle, who had the tires I wanted, with no patronizing "recommendations." Sorry Calhoun, you're super close to my house, independent, and connected to a coffee shop, but I'll be going to Penn Cycle from now on. I'm sick of being talked down to by sales staff. If I tell you exactly what I want, and don't ask for a recommendation, just sell me what I want. That's your job. read more

Was there to purchase Banjo Bros backpack, and while I was paying, the repair guy asked my 9 year old son if he was going to buy the bike he was sitting on. My son said no, and the repair guy told him forcefully "well get off it then!" I told him that's not an appropriate way to speak to a child, and he was very confrontational. It seemed like he actually wanted to fight in the store with my 2 boys just a few feet away. We left and haven't been back since. read more

they are for all intents and purposes my neighborhood bike shop. they have a great collection of accessories and stuff, but they're a recumbent shop. i don't ride recumbents, it's nothing personal, they're just not for me. they are however, the only brompton dealer i know of in the twin cities and i lust over them every time i go in. that said, the staff are always really friendly and nice, the prices are reasonable and they have a great blog / web site that has cool local cycling info. they'll happily order you up anything you want from the distributors and they answer their email unfailingly. update - over the past couple of years this place has just gotten better and better. they've done a great job of adapting to the more utilitarian cycling crowd and they carry a great selection of practical city bikes. the customer service if anything has actually improved. whether this is because we see them more with their widened selection of kit or whether what were perceived as gruff (but responsive and smart) personalities have softened over time. every time we go in there's a pretty solid sucking sound coming from our wallets as we discover something that we "must have". but there's never any remorse and you know you're supporting a great local business. read more

Mail order fraud is what they delivered to me. A set of pedals that turned as if sand were in the bearings were finally repaid to me minus the sent and return shipping after having to get the Bank credit card Co. involved. They have some mouthy punks talking to people who are safely for them out of state. AVOID these schiesters and shop around. Lousy service and defective items is what they will deliver to you. I purchased a bicycle mirror from Calhoun's online store and had it shipped to my house in California. The mirror appeared to have been damaged in shipping. I called Calhoun Cycle and the gentleman I spoke with was very understanding about exchanging the damaged item, and he said Calhoun would pay for return shipping of the damaged item. I received a follow-up call a couple of hours later. The woman who called was very apologetic and said Calhoun was sending me a replacement, and that I should just dispose of the damaged unit I had originally received. The bicycle mirror should probably have been shipped in a box the first time (instead of a padded envelope), but Calhoun made the return/exchange process painless and easy! When one of our bikes was getting a basket installed, the other guy went out and correctly attached a side basket that was hanging on my bike without being asked, then explained to me what he did and why. Had previously gotten my bike tuned up at freewheel (a couple of years ago), and hadn't been impressed when I got it back. Got my bike tuned up here, and it shifts better than it did when I bought it, in addition to fixing the numerous small problems that needed repair.
