Freewheel has given great repair and maintenance service since we found them in the 1980's. They also give spot-on advice on bikes and gear. I'm clad all over in Freewheel layers especially through the winter. The staff just knows so much about cycling gear and their wide range of rides. They have not steered me wrong. I take advantage of the discounted tune-ups in December and January each year. It is such a pleasure that first ride in the spring on my road bike. Today it hit 60 degrees. My 15-year-old bike felt like new. What's the most important piece of equipment? Our helmets! Freewheel sells the Bontrager Wavecel line that has been proven more effective against concussions than older technology. Without our brains in good shape, well, we don't want to know. (I have no connection to Bontrager other than as a happy customer.) Thanks for protecting us, Freewheel! read more

probably fine to drop off a bike and have them do work on their own time. i wasnt notified when the part was in.. when I did follow up they said It was there and that a mechanic could take care of it that same day. i hopped on my bike and got there within 20min. to stand around and wait another 40min. with no end in sight.. I figured Id just take the part and have my bf install it since a line was forming and I didn't want to stand around another hour for the labor. but I couldnt take the stem because supposedly I owed another $8 in taxes for the part I had purchased over a week ago.. $8 tax on a $30 part - you do the math. I just returned it said no thank you.. super waste of time. read more

NEW location in Marcy-Holmes neighborhood since the West Bank store (on S. 6th St is now closed). Large selection-and what they don't have at this location they can get from one of the other 7 stores. They do service MOST bicycles but not all e-bike motor (check with them). When I visited the store (looking for a new pannier), the older female salesperson was SUPER helpful and knowledgeable. She wasn't interested in making money off of me but helping me find what I really wanted/needed. Parking is much better at this new location. Also, the Roseville Freewheel is now closed. read more

I had my bike worked on, full service. I picked it up and tried to remove the front tire to get it in my car and I couldn't remove the locking mechanis., quick locks. It broke trying to get it off it was on so tight. It I took it in the store and they used some channel locks to remove it and they installed a new lock but then they charged me for it! They installed it wrong , even I know you don't lock them that tight. I won't go back again. read more

Always very helpful. Great inventory. New facility is great - lots of room to browse, lots of light.

Amazing customer service. I had purchased a new bike elsewhere and needed to get accessories. Not only did they have a good selection of locks and fenders, they helped me get the fenders and lock mounted to my bike! Excited to return to this shop in the future read more

COVID Review! We were super happy with both of our recent purchases from Freewheel Bike. Of course, they have a great selection of quality bike products. However, I'm giving them five stars because they are 1) still open during the COVID shutdown, 2) extra careful about keeping all transactions within the recommended social distancing guidelines, and 3) still on point with both customer service quality and speed, despite all the challenges. One of our purchases was made at the front door, and we rang the bell, placed our oder, we paid over the phone, and then they left our item. We went straight to the website for the second item, and they honored a coupon despite being marked for use "in person" because of the extenuating circumstances, and our item was ready for pickup within an hour. All in all, we have been quite pleases with Freewheel, and will definitely be back even after COVID is over. read more

The people at the Bloomington Freewheel store were very helpful in selecting and fitting my bike. The main reason to buy from a bike shop is good service. Mike and Greg did the free 100 mile checkup in a few minutes despite it being a busy Sunday afternoon. Service included chain lube, replacing a pedal, and fixing two other problems. read more

I bought an e-bike from this store and they have provided outstanding support and service. They resolved battery and smarthub issues under warranty with excellent communication. Particular kudos to Sarah who went way out of her way in helping find a bike rack that met our needs including assembling several models and testing them on her own car before trying them on mine!! read more

On 7/20/2024 I walked into the Richfield Freewheel to purchase a bike for my wife. Help was a bit too chatty but we soon settled on an 800.00 bike. I applied for credit through their app. and was approved in a mi or two. 2.5 hours later staff were still hiding behind each other to figure out how to get the pos to link up with their credit offering. Left without a bike. Returned with notification from app. that Freewheel was ready make the sale. Nope... no bike. Returned the following day with promises thwt the Manager would be able to help and free helmetfor my trouble. Manager could not have been less interested in helping his staff or me. Isinuated the this was on me... and that I pay another way... I gave up and bought the bike. They then offered me the cheapest helmet they had and when I balked I was told that they weren't ma any money on the sale. Manager treated his staff like garbage. read more

I walked in, was asked immediately what I needed, told the salesperson what I was looking for. We had a quick discussion of what I would be best in my situation . Tried the bike out and within a few minutes was on my way. Transaction went quick and the two gentlemen minding the store were very friendly. I was even given directions on how to get back to my apartment, since I do not live here full time, I had taken the train to their location. Great experience. Will definitely be coming back. Thanks guys. read more

The staff was very friendly and helped fit me to the right bike - which was a pretty big deal having not ridden in 15 years. After training for and riding the Great Mesabi Trail (53 miles) up in Hibbing one summer, I swapped out that bike (Trek 7200) for my current commuter bike (Trek 7.3). The prices are reasonable, bike accessory selection is great (and local in some cases - i.e. pannier sacs from Banjo Brothers). I've referred two of my friends to Freewheel, who subsequently bought their bikes here. Other purchases I made here include bike shorts, bike trainer, shoes, 2-sided pedals (alternate between clipless and regular shoes), 2 Banjo Brothers Pannier sacs, 1 rack among other things. I've shopped at Erik's (2 of them) and am a member at REI, but will always get my bike stuff here. Oh... and if you are really into biking, check Surly Bikes (also local) :D read more

Freewheel Bike - Bikes Near Me - Minneapolis, Minnesota

unintentional damage to bike by a wonderful and helpful employee in the middle of along bike trek vacation causing us to back track to the store. This is the best bike shop I've been to in the twin cities! The staff is super helpful and engaging in a fun and professional way. Their support since COVID 19 has been awesome! I love showing up to a short line and a cooler full of fresh, cold water as I wait my turn to enter their store. They were especially helpful and empathetic to me after my bike light was stolen. They helped me find an affordable replacement and gave insight into the scope of bike related theft over the summer. All of their accessory recommendations have proved positive. Their technicians are fast and reliable with any service I've needed. Thanks, Freewheel! Keep up the great work! read more

What a great day! Went into the Woodbury location all three guys very helpful. Needed and very much wanted studded fat tires. Showed me the lowest and brought me to the highest and I ultimately made the decision a day later to go with the highest. They put them on for me and I just got done doing 15 miles in a snowstorm and even went no handed for a couple minutes because the traction is so great. I asked if they could give it a once over on the bike and we found some major issues plain as day. Like I said super helpful bunch of guys!!! And very honest which is hard to come by. Dan read more

This place combines the best elements of your little neighborhood bike shop with the bigger ones that are up on all the current stuff. They've been around forever. The mechanics are superb - unless specialty tools are required I do my own work, but bouncing questions off of them (which they're happy to answer) they 100% know what they're talking about. The salespeople are friendly and genuinely knowledgeable - classic happy bicyclists. High frequency but relaxed, which is exactly my desired speed. If you're going to buy even a single expensive part or accessory look into their 'Fanatics' program. For me it paid for itself with the first purchase and then many times over since. This place makes me happy. Freewheel is once tiny part of what makes Minneapolis the wonderful place that it is. read more

In the spirit of optimism, let me begin with the positive--- they have a good selection of women's chamois (aka: bike shorts). Unfortunately, the list of pros concerning this shop and my experience stops there and at the service area of the shop. For some context: I have been cycling across the country for a charity. Minneapolis marks the halfway point of my route (2000 miles) and I needed to get a small bike check up. As one would imagine, along the way I have seen and visited a plethora of bikeshops...funky, top notch, heavy duty, stuck up, etc. I heard from the grapevine that Freewheel was a good bet, so I popped in to have my gears simply adjusted and have someone look at my bike. The shop is clean with a simple layout and has a good selection of treks and gear for both men and women. As stated prior, good bike short selection. There's no cute analogy or clever way to put it: my experience with Freewheel's service arena and particularly, Patrick, one of the bike technicians was, simply put: notably sour. After taking a look at my bike, Patrick began to list of everything wrong with it, calling it verbatim "a worn out mess and would be lucky if I get 100 more miles on it." He then proceeded to tell me all of the "huge issues that other bike shops would not catch and he's not surprised, because 'we are not any ordinary bike shop'." The list of absolutely needed repairs in Patrick's professional opinion amounted to about $600 (he didn't even bother to provide explanations of the absolute necessary and one would need a glossary to understand everything he said)...and that's not all, lucky me, he noted that "even if you wanted me to do all the changes needed, there's no way I can get to it for a week" AND "even if you wanted to buy a new bike from us, im sure its not news to you that someone of your size will have difficulty finding something with us" (i'm 5'0). I am a realist and have a pretty thick skin...if there's an issue, there's an issue, but Patrick's delivery was nothing short of rude, condescending and icy. As I left the shop, Patrick simply said "why don't you go have a hearty meal and make some decisions?" .....Umm excuse me? My own siblings dont even speak to me like that mid-bickering. At the end of the day, even if I were to shell out $ for all the repairs, or even if my bike was hit by a car and I needed to buy a new bike in a snag, there is NO way I would be giving this shop my business. So what did I do? I took my bike to a neighboring shop Hub. Hub made only the necessary adjustments (for 1/4 the price Freewheel wanted to charge, made an effort to explain everything in detail, went to another shop for a part they needed and rushed the service so I could be out the door the next morning). As result, I had all 22 bikers in my group of cross country cyclists visit HUB shop for tools, tune ups, etc. Good, clean, kind service. They say that a bad egg can ruin the box...this seems to be the case with my experience at this shop. The same goes for vice versa...perhaps if I had been helped by a different technician it would be a whole different story. And let's face it...we dont always live in a 'the customer is always right' world. Sometimes customers are pains in the butts and simply wrong...however, the experience at Freewheel evoked a certain "you're a customer and you just don't know squat" feeling. read more

I bought my bike at this very store in 1986. I am still commuting with the same bike today. I have always had it serviced at Freewheel--both Midtown and at this shop. Always great experiences. Even in emergency situations these friendly folks will give me a hand. They even advise about the most economical solutions. This past week, I encountered issues on my commute downtown. I brought my bike in, took the mechanics advice for service, and am really glad I did. The bike is like new! Clean, quick, nimble and the best it's been in a long while. These shops are great. Truly the best place to buy and service...and I'm saying that based on 30 years experience! read more

It's been over a year since I first reviewed Freewheel & what a difference a year makes. I complained about the inattentiveness of the staff & they did a complete 180, I was quite impressed. While my husband sticks to The Hub for his repair/maintenance needs Freewheel is where I go & I am always very satisfied. The location is convenient for me whether I can ride or if I have to walk my bike over there. So far I have yet to wait more than 15 minutes for a repair, from start to finish. Most recently a new real wheel for my vintage Schwinn, which apparently required a tool they don't use much these days. read more

Bought a Trek Verve bike from Freewheel Bikes in Eagan a couple days ago. Great service, knowledgeable staff, helpful bike mechanic. They have a huge area behind the shop to test ride bikes. read more

I have been turning into a bike-junkie lately, and I love it! As I have been learning to repair my own bikes, I have also been frequenting bike shops. Freewheel has much better options for parts and accessories, including kids stuff, than the 'other leading bike-shop' and generally more affordable too. They have plenty of selections depending on how much you want to spend, or the quality you need. The staff is always more than helpful. They will help you weigh your options as far as quality and affordability. If they can't help you, they will tell you where to get what you need, or when they will have it. The bike selection seems standard. Although I am not in the business for purchasing a new bike, I think they excel at bike parts and accessories. One thing I have learned is that one bike shop is not always the only one for you. Try a few different locations. You will find what you need somewhere. I think you know why I like this one! read more

This place was recommended to me by a friend who's probably spent more hours biking than I have doing all types of physical activity combined. I popped in to get my front shifter fixed - I'd broken the cable during some overzealous shifting into a gear I didn't have. $30, 15 minutes, and a pleasant chat later, I was back on my bike with a perfectly-working front derailleur system. read more

I bought my bike at Freewheel (west bank) three years ago and had a GREAT experience. Staff was knowledgeable and fun to work with. No one in this shop was out to prove themselves as cooler/more badass than thou and they were all fun and easy to work with. I really couldn't be happier with my bike or with the friendly service I've gotten when I've gone back in! I'd be excited if they started selling used bikes and bike accessories in addition to new ones some day. read more

I had my bike fully tuned up at Freewheel last year and it's still riding strong. I don't have anything to compare it to because it was my first bike tune-up, but I was happy with their work. I secretly always thought my bike was kinda janky, but my boyfriend kept telling me it was "really nice." I thought that was just because he gave it to me and was trying to cover his tracks for giving me such a crappy bike. Then I got it tuned up and MY tune changed. When I hopped back on my wheels after bringing it to Freewheel, it was like a brand new bike! I thought the price was fair for the quality of work at Freewheel. The only thing that was kind of a rip was having them do the brake pad replacement. Changing the brakes is such an easy DIY job, but I just had them do it since they already had the bike. It was pricier than expected, so I wouldn't let them do that again. The super-helpful staff checked up on everything thoroughly and gave it a little scrub-down before calling me to tell me it was ready. The bike was also finished a day or two sooner than they thought (even though I dropped it in the spring--busy time), which was a nice surprise. read more

Stopped in for three items. They did not have two of them. Why the four stars? Customer service! I was asked by two different people if I needed help. The first time was right when I walked in, so I said I was just going to be looking for a bit. After not finding the things I wanted, I was approach by a nice young lady who offered to help me find stuff. When the store did not have it she offered to special order it. Seeing I was a buy it now kind of gut she offered to call another Freewheel location. Turns out they had what I needed. So off I went (that location however had awful customer service so I spent my money elsewhere). BUT I will for sure stop back by here next time I need something! read more

I was interested in a Domane AL 5 disc and was willing to drive from WI to purchase 290 miles. They would not hold it without 20% down. Then on the sight the bike was listed at $1,799.99 (I had it in my cart). I looked on the site on Friday 12th the price went up to $1,949.99. They would not honor the original price that was in my cart. So I took my business to World of Bikes of Iowa, Inc. The are going to put this same bike together and call me when it's ready, then hold it for me for 24 hours without any money down. I'll be driving to Iowa next week and purchasing from them. Poor customer service!!!! read more

I am not a bike expert. I liked that Natalia helped me without making me feel like a loser. I had gone to two shops in the past couple of weeks that either didn't provide good service, or gave me the snub for not spending a couple grand. I ended up with a bike I'm very happy with, and was helped weigh my options with patience and knowledge. I also appreciate their 15% off accessories (for 30 days) when you buy a bike! And they have a good selection of accessories. I will be back. read more

Their work might be just fine but multiple experiences with condescending and impatient staff have motivated me to take my bike elsewhere for repairs and tune-ups. I have no doubt that you know more about bikes than I do but that's no justification for rudeness! There are a dozen bike shops to choose from in the twin cities - my recommendation is to find one that employs polite staff. read more

Love this place. Sometimes the service is a little spacey but more often than not I leave happy. People here do care about biking and it shows! In my opinion, this is the best of the three Freewheel locations to look for bikes and accessories. The Eden Prairie one is geared more towards triathletes and the Greenway location is better as an oasis. They could improve by having better stock; sometimes they are out of things which seems odd for a bike shop. But this remains one of my favorite bike shops in the Twin Cites. read more

Between the upity shops who are too good for you and the flip side of ehh bike shops, I found Freewheel bike shop on 6th st. Wow, Allison was GREAT!!! she knew her products, went out of her way to ensure I did not buy what I did not want or need. very low pressure sales. I rode a couple fat tire bikes and one seemed off, immediately she had a tech check it over and adjust the handlebars which were incorrectly tuned. Rode perfect then! They were busy, but even as busy as they were, Allison went out of her way to ensure everyone got that they needed. We left and came back and Allison tracked us right down after she was done with another customer with a smile and how can she help us this time? Ended up with a very nice fat tire bike that I love so far, I needed something that made me work hard, this one sure does! read more

I decided to buy myself a new road bike to replace my 30-year-old Bridgestone stalwart. I am familiar with many bike shops in the area so it wasn't an easy decision to decide where to make the purchase. I decided to go with Freewheel because they have been around since my college days, have dedicated and knowledgeable staff, are consistent supporters of bike clubs/events and have a great selection of bikes. Glad that Marcy was working when I stopped in. She took a look at my old bike and asked me a few questions about my riding. A few minutes later she was showing me three models to test ride. I was encouraged to take each bike for a 10 minute test ride before we discussed them. Marcy helped me select the one which best fits my needs and then helped me select pedals and accessories. I was a bit rushed so the manager offered to help the service guys get everything installed on the bike so I could be on my way quickly. I left my Bridgestone at Freewheel for a complete overhaul, replacing all the 30-year-old moving parts with new. My past experience with their service team is excellent so I'm sure my old bike will be *nearly* as good as my new Trek. Perhaps I will be back at Freewheel in 2044 for my next bike--but at age 86 it might need to be a 3-wheeler. read more

Those people working at the shop were dishonest! Went there to replace a stolen rear wheel on my hybrid. They PURPOSELY used a smaller hub, and charged me ~$150 for the whole wheel. I didn't notice it until earlier last year I took down the wheel to re-apply grease on the bearings. Guess what, I couldn't put the wheel back on because the span of the stay (135mm) is wider than the hub. I guess, they probably just bent the stay to make it fit. Surprisingly, the stay bounced back after almost two years, unfortunately for me, I had to buy a new wheel. read more

This is my local bike shop that I have been going to since the college days. I know some of the people there and everyone is really into biking, so it's not just some bike retail store. The lines they carry are awesome, and the people are very helpful. The service department is always busy but they also help you out on a walk-in basis. Freewheel is also very active in the local biking community, they sponsor events, support trail building and worked with the city to make commuter bicycling better! I always recommend Freewheel to people looking into getting into bicycling. read more

This place was pretty spendy but they have a bigger selection than most of the other bike shops for both bikes and accessories. The place is massive. I was approached by a couple employees that were more than helpful, but they didn't have what I needed which was cotton bar tape for my really old school fixed gear. They only had the modern faux cork padded stuff. oh well. If I'm in the market for some accessories I'll go here. read more

This is by far my favorite bike place besides my local guy down the street. They are laid back and welcoming which is great for the commuter/novice bike person. Some newer places are getting a bit boutique. My wife was looking for a new bike and spent a few hours over two days test driving bikes. They were great. We didn't end up buying a bike there but only because the last years model color was available at another store and the new model of that bike had a bad color. We did get all the accessories and more there and will absolutely go back and recommend it. read more

Always friendly and super quick when it comes to repairs. Dig it doGG.

this has been the year of utility biking for me. i've probably annoyed more local bike shops than i should really admit to in a public forum. these guys seem to handle all of my annoying questions with aplomb and they provide knowledgeable responses to all of them. they have real big dummy frames in stock for you to lust over and a parts department that actually stocks, well, parts. i'm a fan. read more

I've been to Freewheel Bike about a half-dozen times over the last couple of years and I recommend them. They've got a great selection of bikes and the staff is helpful.
