For the past couple of months I've been scouring around online and in store for a used bike. I wanted to spend no more than $100 and my main purpose for getting a bike would be for short rides to the grocery store or lakes. A basket was necessary too so a cruiser is what I had in mind. Unfortunately I wasn't really able to find anything close to what I wanted in style or price. My friend told me about Venture North and how they employ local youth to teach them mechanical and business skills. This is what really made me what to find a bike here. I gave them a call in early March asking if they had bikes in the $100 price range. At the time they said they did but their inventory fluctuates often. I didn't get around to making a visit to the actual shop until late April on our first warm weekend. I was tired to looking for a bike so I just wanted to commit and grab one in time to enjoy the nice weather. I took my boyfriend with me here after work on Friday and since they're also a coffee shop, we couldn't resist! I think Jenn was our barista, she was really friendly! My boyfriend ordered a cold brew and I got an iced latte. I think the coffee was okay - it wasn't the main reason why we were there! Most of the bikes were in a fair condition and were all at least $200. None of them really caught my eye except for this one little cruiser that looked brand spankin' new. Maybe a spec of paint missing in a couple spots but nothing noticeable. The bike was $289 which was quite a bit over my budget so we decided to leave. But we just sat in the car for 20 minutes because I felt like I would regret not getting the bike! We looked up the brand online which was Reid Australia. Online the bike also retailed for $289 so I do think the bike was brand new. We went back in and I took it for a little test ride. To test ride a bike, you do need to have a government photo ID for them to hang onto. They also let me test it out on the street outside. After falling deeper in love I decided to commit! I believe Simon was the one helping us out and I asked him what I should name her and he said Minty Kaling because the cruiser is a mint green. This answer honestly added a lot to my steller experience haha I loved that everyone here was so down to earth! Simon then went to tune her up and you get 20% off accessories with a bike purchase so while we waited the 15 minutes we grabbed some helmets also. They also had a matching basket for $25 that of course had to be added on. Simon also taught me how to take the basket on and off. From arriving to leaving, the whole experience was painless and actually really fun! The whole thing minus my 20 minute car contemplation was only about an hour long. If I'm ever in need of a bike again, which hopefully I won't be because I love Minty Kaling, I'll definitely be coming back here! You can also get tune ups and repairs done here as well. I love this neighborhood gem and vow to go in more often! Over the summer I had an issue with my bike and I was able to walk in and get help immediately. There was a teenager working who knew much more than me and fixed my bike quickly! It was fun to see kids hanging out and learning at the same time. I was also able to get a new battery for my bike computer. I did not have any myself, but there was coffee and some food also served in the front of the business. It seems they can do it all here! I wish them much success. It's a great concept and an asset to this community! read more

Went here because of all the great reviews. I called ahead to get info on pricing and whether they could help with my bike repair. No answer, voicemail was full. I drove about 20 minutes anyway figuring they were just very busy. Nope, closed. Info on their website and on google indicated that they were operating normally. Off to Erik's I go. read more

This review is just for the coffee, not for the bikes. I was in the neighborhood for work and was looking for a cafe for a one-on-one mtg and happened to find this place thanks to Yelp. I felt the community vibe the moment I walked in. The friendly smiles, local art and music completed the picture. My latte was decent and loved that it came in a mug that said "advocate" with a fist. The aren't very many tables but we were lucky to snag one and I didn't feel rushed to leave. They sell bikes & biking supplies but also things like "I love North Minneapolis" t-shirts. Definitely worth checking out and supporting given all the community-based services this coffee shop does as well! read more

This is a great no-frills coffee shop. Due to covid they're only open thurs-saturday. I've had their regular drip coffee and cold brew and they were both great. What's extra great about this place is that they're a non-profit and do a ton of awesome things for the community. read more

My bike has been making some weird noises and clicks and I wanted to get them checked out. I've put a lot of miles on it and I've never gotten it tuned up. Called in asking about service and they said to just bring it in. Brought it in asked about service, they said they were too busy to take it in but just to tell them what I thought was wrong with it. Started explaining one of the issues and I guess the guy didn't like the way I talked or looked because I got nothing but pushback. I explained that I didn't know a lot about bikes and he was pretty much like "yeah I can tell." Wasn't interested in asking me about the issues, only tested a few things and kept trying to hand my bike back to me before I could ask about some of the other issues I had. Assumed my chain needed to be replaced because of a cross-chain question I had and he just said that I was probably ruining the chain because I biked like that all the time. I don't bike like that, but even if I did, I'm not sure why it would be met with aggression? It was pretty clear pretty quickly that this wasn't going anywhere so I just left without putting up a fuss since I was being such a bother. Not sure what the deal was, but won't be going back here ever. read more

This rating is for the coffee as well as the bike service. I haven't tried the food. I currently live in Bryn Mawr and Venture North is my go to place for coffee. It's further from my place than another Bryn Mawr coffee shop, but the experience and quality of the coffee is far superior. I'm no barista, but I know how to make a french press and most of the time I'd rather make my own coffee than go out for it unless it's really better than I could do at home. That being said, I've tried iced lattes as well as coffee and espresso at Venture North and never been disappointed. I had a flat tire on my bicycle a while back. I called Venture North and they said to stop in anytime. I went over about 20 minutes later and the manager of the shop was able to help me right away. I think it was around $12 for the tube and labor. The mechanic also did a quick check on the rest of my bike and pointed out a few things that needed some attention, but said they weren't urgent. Venture North is a non-profit arm of some church in North Mpls. They have some community building programs they run through the bike shop. Usually when i'm in there are some kids around, talking about bikes or just hanging out. It seems like a nice place for them to be able to get together and maybe learn some useful skills. There is "open shop" one day a week where anyone can come in and use the tools to work on their bike with supervision from a volunteer. It's a great resource. They sell used bikes and new parts. There is also a very small hot food menu with some tasty sounding vegetarian sandwiches and soup which I'm looking forward to trying someday. read more

This is a great starting point to build a strong and positive community in the Harrison neighborhood. Venture North hosts workshops and get-togethers for anyone interested in being active. The bike service is fantastic. Both my boyfriend's bike and my bike were serviced in one day. They ride great now. The guy who was working was running the whole shop himself that day, making coffee, being interviewed, and talking to me about my bike needs. He was quite chipper despite being dragged in ten different directions at once. Adorable thank-you cards from children cover one of the walls. There are records and books for those who want to hang around and drink their coffee in the shop. As far as coffee goes, it tastes great and is a little cheaper than most places, but don't expect super-fast service. It's not excruciatingly slow, but not as fast as your average coffee shop. Everything else makes that little glitch pretty negligible. This place is great. read more

Bike shop + coffee shop. That concept alone warrants at least one visit. You'll find that the smells of bike tires and espresso blend surprisingly well together. This is the kind of place you want to root for, for several reasons. One, because it's part of a not-for-profit that educates local youth on bike repair and supplies helmets and locks free to those without home, among other services. Two, it joins Milda's on a very short list of Near North establishments that serve coffee and actually welcome you to stick around and enjoy it. Three, the bike mechanics and baristas are friendly and welcoming and they'll likely invite you to pick out a vinyl record or a select the Pandora station. This is a perfect stop between Wirth Park and the Minneapolis Farmer's Market. It only has 3 tables and a couch, but I've never had trouble finding a seat. Internet is reliable, they don't serve food or have outdoor seating (yet), and if you bring your own mug/thermos, it's super inexpensive compared to all other coffee joints. Although the coffee bar opens at 7, the bike shop doesn't open until 11. read more

This place is fantastic - knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to take a minute to walk you through random issues with your bike. I've had great service every time I've stopped in. I've also used the bike tools they have available out front. Most recently - I didn't realize that my bike has a recalled Shimano crankset, and the bike mechanic filled me in and then kindly sent me away to an authorized Shimano retailer (Erik's) so that I can get it replaced for free. I knew this was going to be a good repair experience when Kendrick first looked at my bike, so nice to see someone enthusiastic about bicycles. Not surprised that they are plenty busy and that I had to bring it back later for an appointment, but they got it done in one day as promised and done right. Bonus- since I had been foolish enough to still have my other bike in the car, I was having some challenges fitting them both in. Great little coffee/bike shop! I was staying at an Airbnb down the street and stumbled upon it by accident, and was happy I did. They were playing good music, and the barista took the time to make a special request drink I asked for that wasn't on the menu, and she did a great job! Great service that's reasonably priced. And since it doubles as a coffee shop, you can drop your bike off early. But the best part is that Venture North is a non profit that, in addition to doing the same things other outfits do, also teaches youth how to build and repair bikes.
