Joe's Sporting Goods has an enormous selecting of fishing stuff - nothing much for fly fishing but pretty much everything else. Their staff is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly which isn't always the case at other large stores. I didn't look past their fishing department but the store is huge and well stocked probably the most well stocked outdoor store in the Twin Cities. In fact you may be overwhelmed. Only delt with the gun department but I recommend that you don't bother they judged by my look and the way I talk. Let say its "urban" and instantly he rolled his eyes and got a attitude as if he just wanted me to leave. It was plain as day with his 1 word answers and tone of voice as if I was bothering him by asking him to do his job. They have what you want, they have what you need. they have large selections of guns, ammo and just about anything hunting related clothing, guns and ammo and more. My wife used to hate it when I stop until I got her a 22cal revolver and now she carries a 357mag revolver or my 38 special and now she always asks if we are going to stop) LOL and we have to go to a range almost once a month! Thanks Joes, now she enjoys shooting as much as I do and she can now outshoot me and has a permit to carry and keeps a gun on her or at least in her car. You set her up with a 380 but she likes a little bit larger handgun. And the prices are unbelievably low on new and used guns. she also let me buy a 44mag and she likes to soot that too. If I could give negative stars to this place, I would. I drove almost an hour to look at yeti coolers on sale. I have never been to this store before and did not know the layout. I found a section of yeti coolers and a young man came over and asked if you could help me. I thought oh this is starting off well. A helpful employee. I explained what I was looking for, and he seemed to get a blank look on his face and said those might be upfront. I had no idea where upfront was, but I figured I would venture towards the front of the store and hopefully find it. Well, I got there and I could not find the coolers I was looking for and no one around to help. I went across the aisle to the shoe department and asked if they could get somebody to help me with coolers. They informed me that the ski department handles coolers I said OK fine that's great. Can you call somebody from the ski department and he just looked at me and said yeah and didn't do anything. Then his coworker came by and said we don't have what you're looking for. Well dumb dumbs, I was prepared to buy upwards of four coolers at your store and almost $1000 and you lost it all. I will never be back to that store again.I would strongly recommend nobody else go back there either. read more

Lately I've been noticing just how many different kinds of "sporting goods" stores there are. They definitely don't all carry the same stuff. At this place in Little Canada, you won't find a lot of tennis rackets or softball mitts, but you'll find a lot of supplies for hunting, fishing, and other rugged outdoor activities. They don't have as much real estate as some of the big box stores, so throughout the year they will adjust their visible inventory depending upon the season. I went in there in May 2021, early in the fishing season, and they were hyping quite a lot of fishing gear. Six months earlier, though, there was more skiing & snowboarding stuff in that same area. Lots of apparel meant to appeal to those doing things outside. In fall of 2020 I bought some gloves that seemed like they'd be great for cold-weather hiking. They were Hot Shot brand, which I'd never seen, and it turned out the inner lining was poorly made; the stitching came apart after very little use. So I'm not sure I'll trust unfamiliar brands from Joe's in the future. You might like Joe's a lot more than I do if you participate in the particular activities they cater to, as mentioned above; if so, you should definitely check them out. But avoid those Hot Shot gloves. read more

Joe's is a really nice option for an outdoors store experience that isn't quite as overwhelming as going to say a Cabela's or even a large Gander Mountain. The stores are less humongous though still plenty big. They are also more homey in feel. I love this particular store because there are some really nice comfy chairs to sit in when my husband's outdoor gear shopping energy outstrips my own. I find the staff here to be friendly and generally pretty knowledgeable. I also find a lot of good deals here -- especially end of season clearance type stuff. I also totally love the outdoors themed Snoopy statue out front! Is that too girly to say on a review of an outdoors store? Sorry.... My only complaint about this particular store is that their POS system doesn't seem to be very good. We often have things ring up at the wrong price so I would say it pays to pay attention at the register. But overall, we like Joe's very much! read more

Scroll through the reviews and take note of the fact that people either seem really happy or will never shop here again. I've had both experiences at Joes. The ski dept is good and if you get to know which employees know their stuff, it's great. Just need to avoid the ones that know nothing - there's a couple of them. I've also been very happy with the folks who work in clothing as well. Really nice and very helpful. The gun dept, on the other hand, is a whole different story. One guy I talked to back there is great, the rest feel as though they are doing you you a favor, at their inconvenience, by having to work with you. I was ready to buy a pistol from them and ended up driving across town to a shop that I felt actually wanted my business and wanted me as a customer. Joes wants your money and you to go away. Simple as that. Additionally, if you happen to use them as a SilencerShop.com local vendor, watch out. The agreement for SilencerShop vendors is that they have to list their price for transferring the purchased item once it's approved - Joes listed their price at $0 (they do get paid a given amount per their contract - the transfer fee is over and above that). They know this, yet try to charge you a $25 dollar fee to transfer or you can't take your product. I had to pay it and then call SilencerShop to get them to call Joes and make them refund my money. If you don't know this, and don't push the issue, they just keep the the transfer fee that they weren't entitled to under their agreement. Again - they only want your money at the gun counter - you as a customer, not so much. read more

100% agree with the other folks here who said the service is the best. I bought cross country skis and got top notch service, no up-selling and the salesperson knew his stuff (I wish I remembered his name!). I keep sending people to Joe's for all their skiing needs. Literally every other ski shop I've been in has been staffed with uber serious ski snobs who are too important to actually help you. I recently bought some BAFFIN winter boots to use hunting. They were supposed to be rated for -148 degrees. In 20 degree weather they were no better than any of a number of boots I have owned. I contacted BAFFIN who said the boots need to be snug to keep your feet warm. JOE'S said they need to be a little big to keep your feet warm but they would be willing to send them to BAFFIN to have them looked at but they didn't honor BAFFIN's website policy that says you can return them to a store within 30 days. It appears I'll be stuck with BAFFIN boots that do no perform as advertised. Also Interesting: You can submit reviews on JOES web page but they're never posted. Everyone wants to find a local bait shop with the good ol' boy that knows everything there is to know about the local waters, and what bites in them. These local bait shops are the unsung heroes of the fishing world, and their knowledge has put more fish in the boat -- and more walleyes in the grease! -- than any article or Youtube video ever has. The problem of course is that local bait shops rarely have a huge selection or good prices. Enter Joe's. Joe's Sporting Goods is the type of place where if you ask someone "So, what are they biting today?" you'll have 3 store employees chiming in with their tips and tricks to conjure big fish from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. It seems like everyone there is a fisherman, and they all have a unique and expert perspective on how to catch the fish of a lifetime. They also have a massive selection of lures, rods, reels, and terminal tackle, and fresh live bait to keep you stocked and ready. Their pricing is good. Maybe not quite as good as some of the big box stores, but definitely fair. Combined with the expertise, it gives you a value that no big box store can match. Joe's is what sporting goods stores should have been all along. Somewhere along the way, Cabela's, Gander Mountain, and Bass Pro Shops turned into Walmart, and I'm not sure how it happened. Generally knowledgeable staff (primarily at the fishing counter based on my experience) and a decent (hardly overwhelming) overall selection of products. Shopping at Joe's is a little bit like shopping at a neighborhood hardware store vs. Home Depot...a more accessible and helpful staff where quality products are offered but where prices are higher. It's also an environment for the shopper who may not possess extensive personal experience in the woods or on the water and may be gift shopping for an outdoors person. Such a shopper would benefit from the assistance of the competent staff. By the way, the occasional discounts/special offers make it worthwhile to visit Joe's whenever you're in the neighborhood. read more

Joe's began as a mom and pop shop just North of downtown St. Paul on Dale St. But they did well enough that they built their own building in Roseville off of 35E and Rice St. You can see it from the highway. I had never been to their old store, but their new one is great. I tend to hover around the fishing area, so I haven't explored the store fully, but they look to have a large selection of items in each of their categories. Joe's greatest asset, though, is their employees. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and always polite. I was once in the store with my daughter and she started playing with a fishing rod that she found on the floor. One of the employees asked her to stop playing with it because it turned out it was a $300 rod. He wasn't mean or nasty. Even though I'm sure he wanted to grab it from her hand, he politely asked her not to play with it because of its value. I was very impressed. The reason Joe's employees know so much is that the owner (Joe, I presume) pays for his employees to get to know the products they sell. I heard that he'll pay for camping trips, hunting trips, and even an African safari so that they use and understand the products in the store. There is a 7 ft stuffed bear in the store that one of his employees shot on one of those trips. Paying for trips like that, to me, seems like a crazy thing to do given that traditionally, people that work at sporting goods stores (or retail, in general) are just using it as a stepping stone for their "real" job. But for Joe's, it has paid off. Most of the employees are older 30-40 year old folks who are obviously passionate about their respective sport or activity and they definitely know their stuff. In the fishing area, Joe's is a little more expensive than the other sporting good stores, so I would guess that's the case in other parts of the store. But I'm always willing to pay a little more if I get my questions answered and get better customer service. I mostly just dabble right now, but if I ever get really serious about an outdoor activity, you'll find me at Joe's. read more

I shopped at Joe's for many years; I'll never shop there again. I purchased a firearm and Joe's agreed to serve as the FFL. When the time came to pick up the purchase at the store, one of employees completely ignored me. Finally, I was helped and filled out the paperwork. An employee checked it out and for the same employee who ignored me to do the required 2nd reviewed. He ignored the employee helping me and there was no one else at the gun counter. He was asked two more times to check the document and continued to ignore us. After about 20 minutes we found someone else to complete the review process. Unbelievable. So, I live in Missouri/Misery but grew up in Minnesota and decided to purchase some skis from Joe's on black Friday. Well, after I purchased them, I realized Joe's was running the same promotion online and I could save myself the trouble of hauling my skis through the airport and save some money on sales tax, too! Turns out I had the last pair of skis in that size, but they just told me to bring them to the store and they would ship them for free. The employees (Jason and another woman) were more than helpful and I really appreciated the great service, especially when I was totally the one complicating everything. I would love to give this place 5 stars, but I can't because the prices are high at times and the selection is limited at the same time. But if it weren't for those two things, this store would be a 5 because they blow all others out of the water when it comes to customer service. The employees are knowledgeable and it's locally owned. They also donate to local schools/charities. For example, the elementary school across the street from Joe's received a donation for 5,000 dollars for their 5th grade science trip! Gotta love a place that gives back. I recently purchased a ski package here and had the best customer service from a gentleman named Phil. Buying a ski package is quite an ordeal, especially if you're not overly educated and Phil made the process not only fun, but informative. He did this on a very busy Saturday morning while juggling numerous other customers, but I always felt that he was attentive to my needs, even when I didn't know what I needed or wanted! We tried on a numerous pairs of ski boots and he informed me of what I should be looking for in regards to fit and style. The prices here are a bit high, but the service I have received here is unmatched. I am an avid fisherman and really like shopping here. The personnel are knowledgeable and won't try to upsell you. They always first ask what your price range is and accommodate with the best quality products within that range. I also like their selection of rods, reels, lures, tackle, etc. This place also carries live bait, so all you kiddies cabin, lake, or river bound be sure to stop on in to pick some up. I ordered a sweatshirt off of Amazon through them. they held my money for over week before they informed me they were sold out of the sweatshirt that I ordered. I think that practice is very unprofessional. I used a gift card so the money came out immediately, so I was out my money for over a week till they told me they were sold out. During end seasons, they have great sales!! I buy mostly fishing and hunting there. Knowledgeable staff and great customer service. Products are good but somewhat limited on brands to choose from. Good on warranty products. Bought a rod once and a few years later, it broke on me. Luckily I had the receipt saved. Brought it back and they simply sent it in and ordered me a new one! Although it took a while (3 mos.) to get back to me, it was on the manufactures end and not Joe's. read more

Got a great deal on a pair of mid-hikers at Joe's on Black Friday. Was out with my father-in-law and after a trip to Cabela's that came up fruitless, aside from some bad jerky from Jeff Foxworthy. The thing that separates Joe's from other stores is the employees/customer service. Do you want to talk to a high school kid who knows zilch about gear or talk to a seasoned salesperson. We quickly had some great feedback and went on our way after picking up the boots. Wish we had these in the Chicago area. I like REI and Cabela's, but this place smoked them! After I bought the part, they messaged me saying there was an error in pricing and they wouldn't honor it (not the customers fault you can't price your things correctly). After trying to get amazon.com to resolve the issue, joes cancelled my order anyway. What a waste of time. Deal with someone else.
