Insalata Rica is located near St. Peters Square and the Vatican Museums. The restaurant offers patio seating with misters (great for those warm summer days) and indoor seating (when you need to escape the heat). We stopped in here after an incredible morning spent with Pope St. Francis...and a few thousand of his closest friends during his public address. After a HOT summer morning spent sitting in the sun and several days of pizza and paninis, I was so thankful for the refreshing salad options at Insalata Rica! The Bruschetta al Pomodoro was a delicious appetizer and perfect start to the meal. It was simple, but made with high-quality ingredients: very fresh tomatoes bursting with flavor, light salt and fresh basil. Perfect combination! The Troffie al Pesto was delicious and I loved the freshly-made Troffie pasta - unique shape and texture - perfect for soaking up the pesto. The pesto was mild and didn't have a strong garlic flavor, but overall we were quite pleased and the serving was quite generous for the price. I ordered the Insalata Siciliana (Sicilian Salad) and requested it "sensa mais" (without corn). This is maybe my favorite salad of all time. Definitely the best salad we enjoyed in Rome! I was SO excited to have a BIG bowl of greens after days of pizza, pasta and paninis, and this salad did not disappoint. The Insalata Siciliana came with mixed greens, arugula, sun dried tomatoes ("pomodori secchi"), olives, and generous pieces of "Ricotta Salata" (aged ricotta cheese). The fresh flavors and combination was perfecto! Also, the cheese lover in me leaned something new: "Ricotta Salata" maintains a unique freshness - that milky quality of ricotta - but is dry and spongy, almost like an aged feta. It's sharper, too, due to that extra dose of salt ("salata"). Turns out, it's the perfect cheese to top on a salad and drizzle with fresh olive oil! read more

This was our last dinner in Rome. We were staying at an Airbnb in walking distance to the Vatican. Since we were in Rome we thought we should eat some pasta. This restaurant was literally beside the Vatican. I ordered a clam spaghetti which arrived with clam and a surprise addition of mussels! The pasta was cooked just right and the seafood tasted fresh and was well seasoned. My mom's spaghetti with salmon however had another surprise - a little sheet of plastic (about 1 inch by 1 inch in size). We told the waiter right away. He kindly offered to change her dish. My mom opted to change from her original order to the same clam spaghetti as me. Her dish also came with mussels. We were seated outside of the restaurant. A bit of a turnoff were the people who came by to beg for money while we were seated during our meal. Four people came to ask us for money within an hour of sitting down. Some individuals were more persistent than others. Some wouldn't leave until given money. Not the most comfortable experience during a meal. The servers were trying to discourage these people from approaching the customers. Overall, the food was tasty here. Four of us ordered pasta dishes and we shared one large bottle of water. In total our food cost about 63 Euros. This place was okay but maybe eat inside the restaurant to minimize outside people disturbing you during your meal. read more

Great place for a quick light lunch next to Vatican City. We were able to get a table outside right away next to the very busy Vatican City. And if there is not a table available, there are a few other places just like this one in the immediate area. My wife and I shared a prosciutto and mushroom pizza. The crust was very thin, the sauce was delicious, the cheese was plentiful and they did NOT skimp on the toppings. I got a beer and my wife drank tap water. Wasn't my favorite spot in Rome, but was convenient to where we were staying. I decided to get the crab meat salad and it was just very bland. That could be because they only use oil and balsamic vinegar as their dressings. It was a nice switch from the normal pizza and pasta that we were eating every day for the 4 months we lived there. They re very creative here, artistic, and don't sacrifice flavor or price in doing so! I highly recommend the Roman chicken! Italian salad, and veal pizza! I have been traveling across Italy for the past week and have come across many ok tasting foods that are small, tasteless, and very expensive... coming from L.A. I was shocked when I ate at this place. I assumed from the location and general decor that it would be the US equivalent of George Webb's or some such diner. It was not. But it WAS that cheap. My mom and I went here a few times during our recent visit to Rome and enjoyed every bite. We tried different pizzas and pastas and all were delicious. Oi, I know I know, this is what I get for eating at a restaurant across the street from the Vatican Museum. This was mediocre at best. The mushroom and proscuitto calzone, while not horendous, was very watery and very bland in taste. I overdosed on salt, black pepper and crushed red pepper just so I can get some flavor in there. While they gave you a fairly big calzone, I've certainly had better. The soft drinks and cappuccinos were fine but the white wine here was terrible. Again, should have known better. Our waiter was very inattentive and never there when you needed anything. He took our order and then disappeared until we had to pay. My sister and I found this restaurant after our visit to the Vatican Museum. I would say this restaurant was pretty popular with the crowd despite the fact that there were 2-3 other restaurants nearby. My sister and I tried the Avocado Salad in a Bread Bowl, Prosciutto Pizza, and Pesto Pasta. There are a bunch of other pizza and pasta restaurants around but I would rate this at the top. The salad and pizza portions are also very large. I would recommend splitting the dishes. Overall good service and tasty foods. read more

While I'm sure this review will fall on deaf ears, I'm going to write it anyway. I say that because this restaurant is located literally right between St. Peter's Square and the Vatican Museums and hungry tourists won't be looking at reviews when choosing to go here. Nevertheless, I got what I deserved for walking right into a tourist trap: mediocre food and absolutely horrible service. The owner charmed us in ("us" included a local I was hanging out with) then like the flip of a switch turned into a complete jerk. He couldn't be bothered to answer questions I had about some of the dishes on the menu, he refused to give me his opinion as to which second course to order, when he brought our appetizers he literally slammed the dishes onto the table, and he practically airdropped our bread onto the table as he rushed past without caring where it landed. On top of that, his waiters could barely speak Italian and when I tried to ask them something about the menu all they could respond in Italian was, "you want the lasagna?" I would've never eaten here but my Italian friend said it would be fine. Take my word for it, she was wrong. read more

After days of pasta I really needed some greens. A friend recommended this place. The salad I ordered was quite large and delicious. I would recommend the Pellegrino (Pioneer) salad for anyone who doesn't mind a little fruit in their salad. Another at my table ordered the risotto/shrimp special. If you are squeamish do not order this. There was only one shrimp and it was boiled whole then laid atop the risotto, head legs and all other body parts. The house wine was 2 euro and I was amazed that it was cheaper than the soda or bottle of sparkling water we ordered. Total meal was relatively inexpensive compared to many other overpriced restaurants in town. A great value and tasty food. read more

After 4 hours of walking in Vatican museum, we had late lunch in there. We got rich 6 salad that came in a puffed bread, pizza artichoke and fettuccine with salmon. Salad was good, with fresh veggies shrimp and cheese. Fettuccine was ok and yummy, pizza was mediocre with thin bread and less cheese. We stopped by here after a trip to the Vatican. I ordered the salmon salad and a large Heineken and the wife ordered a Mediterranean salad. My salmon salad was nasty, the salmon was way too salty and the dressing was horrendous. I usually eat all of my food even if it's average, but the salmon salad I wouldn't dare finish. My wife said that her Mediterranean salad was below average as well. When I wanted to pay my bill I asked for them to bring the check twice, guess they weren't listening or a isn't care.
