I got dragged here a few weeks back by a friend that RAVED about this place! She swore up and down it was the BEST pedicure in life! I have told myself no more sample sample pedicure! But I keep doing it but this time was the LAST TIME! We call make an appointment, the lady then asks that we show up in 20 minutes. OK sweet - we head up there. We are hurried into the chairs nobody rinsed out the tubs, now regardless if its clean, I still want to be reassured where ever I go that the tub is rinsed at minimum. My girlfriend does not have polish on her toes so they start in on her pedicure before mine, now my lady then starts taking off my polish, and instead of a little elbow grease she uses a drill on my big and little toe to get polish off.... Right then & there I should have left but I let her continue. So she doesn't ask to cut my toe nails down and just starts cutting them. Ahhh OK fine whatever, now @ this time shes jabbing my cuticles ahhhhh who does that? Two people walk in, both are known to the people there and they say to them "almost done, i take you quick" I know right then and there it wasn't going to be a great massage, or let alone a good nail polish job. So my massage, lasts really all of 1 minute for both legs and feet! Are you kidding me I am giving you 25$ for a pedicure. She paints my to nails, and at this time - my friend is just receiving her massage - I was a little upset this was totally rushed - in total she spent 15 minutes on a pedicure. So, they drain my tub. Stick me by the window to dry while my friend gets to wait in her chair. I look up to see the just drained tub, being refilled - now I have clean ass feet - I take pride in my feet that's for sure but she just scrubbed my feet and had skin from me in there and someone else is about to put their feet in... UGHHHHHHH DISGUSTING! My friend and I pay, now granted I did not want to pay for this but Iris swore this was her fave place and her mom goes there so I didn't make an instant scene - instead I went home - tried to calm down - looking at my toes I am angry. Their uneven, their not painted well, my cuticles are drowned in polish, I am then angry. I call them, tell them I will be back at 3:30 to talk to them. I walk in the door, the place is full of customers. I ask nicely for my money back, and the owner looks at me crazy and asks why. I told her "I spent 25 dollars for a 15 minute pedicure, my toe nails are crooked, the paint is all over my toes, and even worse the tub was not washed out before or after my pedicure" She then speaks in Vietnamese, fine be mad I don't care. She ask to show someone else and explain again - I go over show them explain again and this time I was loud, don't make a fool of me. I let the whole place know, that tub was not cleaned out, that I was going to call the health board and I was yelping them. The lady then hands me my 25 dollars back and says "no call health board" I laughed and said, I don't need to do all that - they'll get them soon enough. OK, I am a bit snobby when it comes to cleanliness @ a salon because my Mom owned one. I think I'm officially a California girl now because I am ADDICTED to manicures. After checking out the options on Yelp I chose Chic Nails for the location and the price and made an appointment for myself and Roomie. Firstly, if you're going in on the weekend, make an appointment! These ladies are busy and for good reason! Not only do they know nails, but they're professional, sweet and included in the cost of your mani/pedi is a leg, arm and shoulder massage. I only got a manicure because I was being cheap, and $12 to get my gnarly nails done seemed like a great deal. Roomie went full out and got the mani/pedi which was only $33 dollars. Lina was very gentle as she clipped and shaped my nails, trimmed my cuticles and pushed them back. One of my nails began to bleed but I didn't feel it at all. The arm/shoulder massage proved to me that these ladies know what they're doing. I have a bad back so after my arms and hands felt like they were so relaxed they were going to fall off, I got nervous when she went around my back, I've been hurt by massages before. But Lina left me feeling relaxed and comfortable. They had a great selection of colors, but you can bring your own if you don't like what they have, I was able to find my favorite nail color on their wall and I left feeling like a million bucks, even though I had only spent $15. read more

5 stars for Casey, minus 1 star because the other girls aren't nearly as good. I started going here about a year ago when Chic Nail 2 in San Carlos didn't have anyone to do my pink and white one weekend. I'd recommend getting an appointment because they're always busy. I've never gotten a pedicure but every time I've been there they've cleaned the tubs in between each customer. They remember their customers' names and always offer me something to drink. The massage at the end of the manicure is an added bonus. They're affordable and I don't have to worry about my nails breaking or lifting after a week or two. The pink and white manicures that I get from Casey are fabulous - she cuts them short enough, they aren't rough, they are even and they last!! I love this place and will miss it when I move! I've been a regular (probably 1-2 a month) for the last few years. I have my own box, which gives me a little more piece of mind (even though who knows if those tools actually stay in the same box). The girls are friendly and remember your name. They often ask about my job and life, which is nice to know that they pay attention when I speak. Both manicure and pedicure are under $40. They also have a big color selection. I often wonder what they say as they speak to each other in another language (Vietnamese I think) but that seems to happen no matter what salon I go to. I used to get pink and white with Casey and she is by far the best at it! She spends the time required to make sure they are done right. The space is so clean, organized and relaxing and right next door to my moms house. Wanted to get my nails done for Christmas, but couldn't get to my usual place, looked on here and found this place. Very accommodating, gave me a massage while my acrylic dried and gave me hot tea. They did a great job only I think they are used to doing shorter nails. I like mine long so they were too thin and began to break while doing regular day to day tasks. My usual nail place gives me a set that lasts almost three weeks, no broken nails, no issue. I have had 5 nails break and gotten repaired. I wish it didn't happen since I really liked the place! Maybe I should've explained what I needed better. I went to this place on a whim because I didn't feel like driving down the hill to Universe (yes, sometimes, I'm just that lazy!). And wow, I'm glad I did. For those of you who want to compare this place to Universe, here are four main differences: - The mani/pedis are cheaper. - They offer longer hours on the weekdays so you can actually go there after work to get your nails done. - The technicians are extremely meticulous, and will work with you until you are satisfied (something that Universe is too busy to provide at times, esp. on the weekends.) - Aside from the massage chair (which is far stronger than the one at Universe), they also massage your legs, arms, and shoulder. Go to this place. You won't regret it. It's up a little more along the 92, but you can do some grocery shopping at Safeway before or after the mani/pedis. Initially, I went to L'Chic because it was close to my home. Now, I wouldn't go anywhere else. I have my own tool kit and the women there keep the shop clean and up to date. Lien knows my nails and is able to take care of my problem spots when they flare up. I get treated to Vietnamese coffee when I go in. It is my special treat. I tried this salon based on reviews here in Yelp. Very nice nail ladies. Had the mani/pedi which was about $33 which was fine after the high cost at Univers in San Mateo which I last went to. Very relaxing, nice big TV to watch. They brought me hot tea which was good. One week later, my nail color chipped away but I am not careful and should maybe have applied a clear coal a few days later or worn dish gloves at some point. The pedi is still good. I waited this long, because in my 15+ years of getting regular nail services, I believe that you need to go a few times before you can make a true assessment. If they are really busy - then yes, the massage can get short changed a little, the TV is always on, and yes - the customers all seem to talk together. If you want a quiet, serene experience - this is NOT the place for you. For me... I love it! I went in to get a pedicure and I'd say, overall, its an ok pedicure. They go through all the steps and clean your nails thoroughly. The nail polish looks nice and clean. However, when I go for a pedicure I'm kind of looking for a killer massage. Maybe I'm spoiled by my old place, I'm not sure, but I have yet to find a decent place in San Mateo that will give a massage I can really enjoy. I'd say Chic Nails massage was more of a light rub. Just came here after searching for places that did silk wraps since my shellac manicured nails kept breaking. She recommended I instead do the new powder dip they have with shellac over it. Service sucks. They can do nails but don't ask them to pay you any attention. I get that today (thursday) was slow but I'm still paying for service. I used to come here when I was in my early teen and I had good experience then. Now I guess its gone down hill. The ladies were watching iPads and Netflix when I came in today. As my nails were drying she pulls out her iPad and out and puts it on top of the desk and watches her show and out both ear buds in. And the other manicurists were doing each others nails. I really enjoy going here. The women are all very friendly and they remember your name after you have had a couple appointments. They keep your own manicure tools set with your name on it and they give great massages. Most places I have gone to spend a few quick seconds on the massage part but here they take the extra time and I really appreciate that. I also love getting warm tea and relaxing in their massage chairs during my pedicures. I would suggest you always make an appointment to make sure that you are not a rushed walk in customer. I have noticed a difference in the service you may get as a walk in because they can get very busy. This is not a spa experience, but more of a nice place in the middle of the average nail salon and a spa. Great prices make it even more worth it. read more

I've gotten manis / pedis here a few times and have always been satisfied. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is SO SO friendly. I know this sounds horrible but I often have a hard time responding to my manicurist's questions because of their thick accents. However, at Chic Nails their English skills are great. More importantly, they offer silk wraps, gels, acrylic, nail art, and anything else you might need. Most places only offer a few of these choices but Chic Nails has got it all!! read more

I give this place 1/4 star. It was a horrible experience -- all of it. I came here with a friend after reading some of the great reviews on Yelp. I don't even know where to begin about how bad this place is. The lady who did my nails did them so quickly the polish was uneven. She also did not push my cuticles back. I had to ask her to touch up with the brush because she was going to leave polish on my skin. What kind of place does that? There are tiny particles of probably dust or something on some of my nails. When my nails were being blown by the mini fans, I noticed my color dripping and had to ask her to put on another coat. When she gave me the massage, it felt like she was working on some sort of thing, not on a human being. How about a little human connection? She was like a robot. I would've probably gotten more feeling from a robot in fact.... that's how cold and disinterested she was. Two things I read -- 1) personalized box and 2) water or tea offered. Hmm... We got offered neither. Although I did notice there were regulars there and they did bring out their box of tools. Question: How do they determine who will become a regular?? And what did they do with the tools they used on me??? I noticed they seemed to cater to upper middle class folks who they kissed ass to. I noticed an older woman customer talk to her girl in a condescending fashion. Maybe that's what they're used to. You could tell she was a regular because as soon as she walked in she was greeted by her first name and offered water. I also noticed other customers being offered water. And name?? The girl never once asked me my name. She asked me my ethnicity. Afterwards proceeded to speak to the other girls in the shop in Vietnamese. Maybe I shouldn't have been wearing my yoga gear and should've been dressed up or something and I should've spoken to her in a condescending manner. Maybe then they would've kissed my ass then. I don't rate this place 1/4 star NOT because I'm hurt.... I'm reviewing this place because of how they conduct business. I would never come back to this place. I'm sorry, but I do not want to give business to people who don't know how to treat people who they don't feel they have to kiss ass to. These people need to understand that we are all the same. In retrospect, I shouldn't have tipped them anything. She definitely did NOT deserve a tip. My friend wasn't happy with her manicure either. read more

I just moved to Alexandria VA from San Mateo (bleh - I know) and thought I should go out and review the place I miss so much. It is chatty and def better to go during the evening through the week. That is the time you get the most attention and the best massage. They have great nail colors - EVER color. Much better than any place else I have been. The TV is on but that doesn't bother me. I went with my friend Kimberly M and it was a great girl's night every other week. AND the price is RIGHT! $34 pre-tip for mani and pedi. Not quiet and serene, but the pedicures last. The shoulder massage is great. Highly recommend if this is the type of atmosphere you can deal with. They do not do credit cards - so make sure you have a check or cash. read more

I love this place. I come here for pedicures ($25) and am always really happy with results that last for a month without chipping! (Really, the only reason to go back is because they've grown out.) I usually make an appt, but have also been a walk-in and they are always happy to accommodate. If you are a regular they will give you a box (or you can ask for one) with tools specific to you that they will keep there with your name on it for when you come in, so there is no tool-sharing amongst their other costumers, which is great because, let's face it: somebody out there has foot fungus, right? And who's to say that the unfortunate people afflicted with this ailment don't enjoy a good pedicure? I mean, they have feelings too! Anyway, their great innovative approach to this problem is great and makes you feel right at home each time you go in. They always offer you water or tea and are happy to redo your nails if you mess them up (one of my nails got smudged as I was getting into my car and they gladly fixed it up for me). If you're a talker they are down to chat, but if you're quiet or only interested in reading the magazines or watching the news they will definitely leave you alone to relax. The massage chairs are great and powerful and my favorite part by far is the leg massage that's included in the pedicure. It's probably the longest massage I've ever had that's part of a pedicure - still though, I wish it were longer. Honestly, I can do my toes at home. That is why I really go. Nowhere in the salon does it state that they only accept cash. This was disclosed at the end of our service, when we were strapped for time with no nearby ATMs. I requested two colors and rounded nail. She ignored both requests, and charged me extra for requesting OPI brand polish without telling me of the extra charge. Pedicures took very long, and service and demeanor was generally rude and unprofessional (earbuds in, having a phone conversation while doing nails, abrupt demeanor and slamming things around). I only visited this place because of the reviews on yelp. The first time I went it was awesome. The massage and the two coats of top coat. About 2 weeks later I brought my mom. We did walk-in and we were treated like sh*t. The woman who did my nails was this short girl with orange hair and she wasn't even watching my nails as she cut my cuticles. Which resulted in me loosing a chunk from my right pointer finger. I yelled out and told her to be more careful and she just went on yammering in chinese or whatever fu*king language they shriek in. The only reason i'd go back is for the massage, but it also makes you feel like you are paying for a cheap hooker. read more
