Friday lunch was an absolute beauty…read more The food? Fantastic. The wait times? Let's just say we're in Paris, not a Formula 1 pit lane. We'll leave it at that. We headed to Chez Janou, a Paris institution. I hadn't been in years, but my son insisted we go back because, according to him, they have the best chocolate mousse in Paris. Judging by the lineup, half the city; and every tourist with an Instagram account showed up. Thankfully we had a 2pm reso. Here's the thing, though. Everyone talks about the mousse, but the food deserves just as much attention. I'd also forgotten how much I love the 3rd arrondissement. Wander a few minutes from the restaurant and you'll find beautiful art galleries, a gorgeous little park, and some of the best boutique shopping in Paris. It's one of those neighbourhoods where you accidentally walk 15,000 steps without realizing it. Now, here's your game plan. Start with the escargots or the gambas to share. For your main, order the farci provençal or the foie de veau. The farci is like a French version of a stuffed pepper: yummy comfort food with a southern coast twist. As for the foie de veau... I actually ordered it by mistake. I thought I was getting regular veal. Out came veal liver. Best mistake of the day. I love liver. My mom makes an incredible liver and onions, so I'm a tough judge. This was outstanding. Rich, buttery, perfectly cooked and perfectly salted. It was so good I immediately texted my mom and told her she's coming here the next time she's in Paris. Drum roll, please... The chocolate mousse. Was it worth all the hype? Yep. There are no fancy swirls or little artistic desserts here. A server simply walks over carrying what looks like a white industrial-sized bowl of chocolate mousse and casually drops a mountain of it onto your plate. Everyone grabs a spoon and starts digging in. It's wonderfully French. Simple. Unpretentious. Ridiculously good. So yes, Chez Janou lives up to the hype. But don't just come for the mousse. Come for the lunch, stay for the neighbourhood, and spend the afternoon getting happily lost in one of the best corners of Paris. That's a Friday well spent.

We came across this restaurant amd were pleasantly surprised by how wonderful it was! I think their menu changes daily based on what the chef can get locally. The waitress brought us the large chalkboard to order from. I got the roast chicken with polenta and my husband got the cod. We also started with a cold appetizer, beet ravioli (the beets were finely shaved as the "pasta" with a delicious cheese filling). Both of our dishes were flavorful. I really liked that it seemed like a place locals come to and they didn't try to pander to us as Americans. They were very nice and attentive, but didn't have English menus nor did they try to speak English too much amd it was just nice. I would highly recommend this place. There is a lot of care put into the food and service.

It's a small restaurant, but they seemed to fit a good amount of people in there. By 8:30pm, the restaurant was packed. All of the menu items are written on chalkboards that they carry around from table to table. Like previous reviews mentioned, the menu is in French. Be sure to ask for recommendations from the waiters or use Google translate to translate the menu. I ordered the Boudin Noir, which is a type of pork/sausage that you can only get in France. It was a very tender meat and extremely savory. It was well balanced with the mashed potatoes it was served with. The mashed potatoes were also done really well. It was super soft and fluffy. My wife ordered the grilled cod and veggies. She loves fish and was not disappointed by this. The service could have been a little better in my opinion. We were here for over 2 hours and the waitstaff were not as kind as we were expecting. All in all, the food was phenomenal and the price wasn't bad at all. I would definitely return to try other items on their menu.

We had heard there were a lot of restaurants on the rue mouffetard, so we headed there to check them out. This place looked very cute, and we looked inside and noticed everyone was older and speaking French, so we decided to give it a shot. First of all the atmosphere of the place is wonderful. I assume it is run by a husband and wife team who are warm and friendly. I could tell the regulars were in there for their Sunday lunch, because (Nadine?) was sitting with one of the older women and having lunch with her - which was adorable. The food was delicious - I had the onion soup and beef bourguignon (went completely traditional) and my dining partner had the fish du jour. The beef was very tender and in a sauce that included the usual beef bourguignon flavors and (cinnamon?). it was great. I can report that the fish du jour was "perfectly cooked" and accompanied by a lovely sauce. Nadine and her (husband?) were wonderful hosts and the place was very lovely. The experience and the food together were fantastic. I could tell that they really love what they do. Stop in if you find yourself on the Rue Mouffetard.

I have 2-words to say, OK, if I don't use a contraction then it's 3-words..., "DO NOT GO"…read more We went the other night. It's a cute restaurant, quite large by Parisian standards. They have seating on the main floor as well as upstairs. This restaurant specializes in Basque cuisine. We were 4-people. For our entrées, 2 had salads, a squid salad, and the other salad was made of grilled bell-peppers. These dishes were OK. Now here comes the bad and the ugly. My companion and I had the "foie gras" du jour (special of the day) which was served encroute akin to "beef wellington". All I can say is that you needed an axe to cut into the meat. Inquiring minds want to know, how can you get an overcooked foie gras encased in an undercooked puff pastry is beyond me!? part of the dough was actually raw! Now for our main courses. Two shared a basque style paella, while I got the boar, and my partner got the hare. Where do I start? Let's start with the boar. It was smothered in a wine sauce that was so acrid, I couldn't eat it. The meat was unidentfiable. It was accompanied by thin egg noodles maybe tossed in a little butter, accompanied by an egg custard and a zuchinni cup filled with grape jelly, I kid you not! Needless to say, I drank tons of wine just to try and get the food down, and just gave up and left my plate barely touched. My partner had the hare, pretty indescribable meat, but it was accompanied by simple oven roasted "scalloped" potatoes. The only saving grace of this dish were the potatoes. It was served as a side and was not contaminated by the other food, and it tasted rather good. But one cannot live on just potatoes alone, n'est-ce pas? I was so hungry, I asked if I could eat some of their rice from the paella. On a good note, the paella was not bad, but wasn't anything exciting either. I also had a cheese plate after dinner, because again, I was hungry. I feared for my life ordering the dessert so decided against it, while my companions ordered a poached pear, a chocolate something or other, and a tart. They all said the desserts were just OK. In summary, once we ordered, our first course came within 5-minutes, and second course came within a nano second later after we finished our entrées. This is unusual for any restaurant in Paris, unless you're in a fast food place. The plates were extremely hot, and I suspect alot of the dishes were kept in a warming oven and either reheated in really hot ovens or maybe even nuked. It's unfortunate, because the servers et.al, were really nice, and it's a beautiful restaurant, but the food just plain sucks, Oh well. Onto the next food adventure.

The restaurant has an open kitchen concept, and the interior is quite dark and a more formal vibe. We got the Menu Le Theil-de-Bretagne, which was the 6-course menu. There's also a 9-course menu option, although they don't really list or explain that much the difference between the two or what the additional courses are. Note that it takes around 30 minutes in between each course, so it's a pretty long dining experience overall. Our reservation was at 8PM and we didn't get to leave until past 11PM. We started off with some black tea as a palate opener. Then: - beet leaf with filling, chestnut cream, cracker with cheese, and bear / tree shaped crackers: chestnut cream was rich and creamy, crackers are good presentation but just tasted normal, cracker with cheese and beet leaf tasted as you'd expect. - fish: really soft and delicious, texture feels like it's melting in your mouth. sauce had a hint of sweetness which was good contrast to flavor of fish but still complementary. - scallop: favorite course for sure. scallop was super tender and also melted in mouth. loved the addition of the microgreens! - Japanese inspired ikura soup with a croissant pastry: very umami but a bit salty for my liking. but loved the incorporation of Japanese ingredients. the croissant pastry was really good, easily ripping apart and great addition with the sesame bottom. honestly wasn't really sure why the soup and pastry were paired together, but both were enjoyable on their own. - lobster: probably my least favorite course. the lobster was too overcooked, I couldn't even cut into it with a knife and had to resort to biting it. texture was rubbery and dry. - steak: soft and great texture. enjoyed the foaminess of the sauce with garlic. - desserts: soooo many given. the meringue with jasmine cream was incredible, loved the jasmine cream. the coffee / chocolate tartelette was way too sweet for my liking, but baked well with a gooey interior. the lemon sorbet had a foamy cream over it as well which was good, but wishing the ratio of sorbet to cream was better as it was hard to taste the iciness of the sorbet. Overall a quite enjoyable meal that met expectations. Ingredients were fresh which is always great. Really liked the unique sauces / creams each dish came with and how there was flavor distinction between each course. Think improvements can be made on the sauce to dish ratio (sometimes felt like too much and sometimes felt like too little), as well as the cooking time of some courses (the lobster was too overcooked). Shorter wait times between courses would elevate the experience more. Would overall recommend!
