I was very hesitant to rent from Kyte after reading some of the horror story reviews from Yelp and Reddit, but I took the chance since I had the flexibility and had an unbeatable price for an AWD SUV to drive to Crystal Mountain for snowboarding. I got a low mileage new looking and impeccably clean 2022 Jeep Compass. I was most concerned about the tire tread before renting but the tires looked brand new and handled very well in the mountain. The pick up and drop off were pretty straightforward and didn't have any issue. I will likely rent from Kyte again this winter season. I'll update if anything goes awry! read more

We had multiple issues with this company and will NEVER rent from them again. The car they provided was unsafe to drive, and I only realized it after driving 3 hours away from my home. It was a nightmare getting them to own up to this and help me return home with my family. We rented a Jeep Compass and drove it to the Washington coast. After I parked it, I noticed that both front tires were extremely worn on the inside tread, one so badly that the underwires were visible. Then I saw the rear driver side tire - it had a large crack in the sidewall. Needless to say, the car wasn't safe to drive my family back to Seattle, given the chance of 1 or even 2 tires blowing out. Kyte's response to this was comically bad. It took me multiple calls over two days to resolve this issue. Each time you call with an urgent issue, you are on hold for 20 to 30 minutes before talking with someone. Kyte first agreed to and then changed their mind about sending a new car. Then they asked me to find a tire shop and replace the tires at my own expense. No, not doing that. They finally agreed they would pay for it. Then, when I pointed out no tire shops were open on Sunday on the coast, they told me they were going to tow their car back to Seattle. Any plan for how I get my family back to Seattle? No. OK, then I'm pleading with them to NOT take the only mode of transportation I have. I finally got traction when I pointed out, again, that I was in a small town (Pacific Beach) without taxis, Ubers, or Lyfts. I have a 4 year old and a dog. There is literally no way to find another car. They finally sent another car, which arrived 2 hours late. The Kyte employee (not a Surfer) who delivered the replacement car confirmed I had not damaged the tires. He said they had missed the wear on the inside tire, because the recent tire audit had only looked at the tires from the midline out to the outer edge. (As an aside: Why in God's name are you not looking at the whole tire?) So, did they comp us the trip or give us credit on a future rental, given the nonfunctional car they provided? Nope. In fact, they charged us for the trip AND the deposit. In summary - Kyte doesn't maintain their cars to even minimum safety standards. If you get an unsafe car, good luck getting any support from them. And after they let you down, they will add additional charges to your trip. NEVER AGAIN. read more

Kyte worked out good for us but it was stressful. I wouldn't recommend this type of service if you're coming/going from an airport unless you're willing to wait around. Once you've selected your pickup time, they give you a 15 minute window to arrive to meet the driver. This means you only have 15 minutes to hope that your plane lands on time, your luggage comes promptly and you can get on the light link train to get to the meeting spot with only a 15 minute grace period. This is unrealistic and incredible stressful if you are trying to time this properly. I recommend allowing at least 30 mins before you think you'll get there. You might have to stand in a seedy train station parking lot for a while but at least they won't leave you stranded. Returning the car was even more stressful as they only give you a 10 minute window after said return time, then they charge you a $25 rescheduling fee. We were driving from 4 hours away and Seattle traffic can be bad, even at 1pm on a Thursday. Again, allow plenty of time. You have to be the one to show up early and wait around. You can not be late. The car was in great condition. Gas was filled. If you choose not to refill they will do it for you at $1+ more per gallon than what you'd pay yourself. The communication was great. They allow you to change your times up to 2 hours before. But this small window doesn't help if you get stuck in traffic or your plane is late. As long as the prices are way less expensive than a traditional storefront I would try Kyte again. read more

I was skeptical at first after reading reviews, but I still decided to take the risk. I booked it for the whole week, starting from the SeaTac parking lot. There were pros and cons using Kyte, but in general, I was satisfied at the end. The pros are: 1) It is not a car sharing/peers-peers ride company such as Turo, Getaround, Zipcar, etc. If you have a credit card that offers rental car insurance, it can be applied here. Your personal auto insurance that covers rental cars can be used, too. 2) Price (I think) is highly competitive compared to traditional rental physical stores. When I first signed up, they emailed me a coupon code. I do hope they offer more coupon codes in the future as I am planning to use their service again. It seems Kyte is not well known yet across states. 3) Cancellation and refund policies are quite reasonable when booking is done over online or app. 4) Car is delivered with care and is clean. Also, current year's model. 5) There is no waiting line in front of other customers 6) Communication... is a bit fickle for me because it is a con, too. Based on my first experience, it was done only through app thoroughly during flight and arriving. First response from the rep to my question I think it took about 10-12mins and after that responses became abit quicker and helpful. The cons are: 1) I had a flight delay going to Seattle, but I had plenty of time to change (supposedly) mannually my pick-up time on the app according to their instructions. However, the app did not have that option for me and I ended up using the chat option to have someone change it for me. The app needs an improvement in that area. 2) Although, Kyte provides the pick-up address including the map. It was still confusing and it takes about 10min walk dragging luggages behind from the airport to find the car. I wish there were physical signs to show visibly the pick-up spot. 3) Since my arrival, as I was confused where to look at and go, there was no way to contact my Surfer and he never contacted me. I received a robot message telling me he arrived, but in reality he was not there yet and I was nervously looking around for him, thinking I was at the wrong place. He was late. However, the second surfer showed up way earlier than my returning time and I applaud him for his excellent job on that 4) They will hold on to a security deposit $300-500 depending on the card on file the day before pick-up. Was about a 10 minute walk to the lot and from scanning the QR code to driving out of the lot was about 5 more minutes (family was in the car within 20 minutes of getting our bags). I read other reviews before booking and thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did! The experience was seamless! It was a short walk from baggage claim at Seattle/Tacoma International to the Wally parking lot and once there, our "surfer" was ready for us. No waiting in line, no searching the lot for our assigned vehicle... QUICK AND EASY! Our car had less than 8k miles and was beautiful.... and was significantly less expensive than the competition. I hate to bring this rating down, but my car this time was delivered with under inflated tires so that tire pressure light was on. However we were on a tight schedule to make the Bainbridge Island Ferry, so I didn't have time to hunt down a gas station and fill up the tires. This made me stress out a bit as I was worried that damage would be done to the car, if it hadn't already, being driven around on flat tires. After the ferry ride, I got the tires inflated and hoped that everything would be okay. Later that night, I had some back and forth with Kyte trying to get them to pick up the car later than scheduled or in a new location near our restaurant because our restaurant reservations got delayed. Again it was very stressful and we had to tell our server that we were in a rush (bc we had to make our scheduled pickup time in a different part of town), so we were not able to enjoy a nice relaxed birthday dinner at a very expensive restaurant. We rushed out of the restaurant to head back to the hotel and then I got a text from the kite driver that he was going to be 30 minutes late. This was really frustrating. Add to this, they now charge for the pickup and drop off service and Kyte is not as good a deal as it once was. Again, I cannot overemphasize that they are best used only if you have no restrictions on your pickup or drop off times or locations. read more

So stressful. They gave me an address to pick the car up, but no directions. Normally that would be OK. Looked on the map, and the address is about a block away from the airport. Turns out the pick up spot near SeaTac is actually reached from the airport by going up through the sky train terminal and down the stairs. Of course my phone's walking directions could not account for that kind of shortcut and directed me around the airport. A 26 minute walk, and I had 10 min to get there before the driver would leave. I was running out of time and totally freaked out. I tried to message them for directions, but there was a 15-minute wait. Then I tried to call. No phone number was provided, but I found one by googling. 20 min wait. By now I have 5 more minutes to get there. when the guy dropping the car off called me. He gave me directions and I was about 5-10 min late. The tire on my car had a slow leak, and I almost missed my ferry because I had to stop to fill it with air. When I got home from vacation I noticed they charged me a $10 late fee. Wish I could ding them $10 for the leaking tire. This is yet another company that has made the process so convenient for themselves that it inconveniences the customer. If something goes wrong on your trip, good luck reaching anyone. read more

This is my second time renting with Kyte (first in Seattle) and it was mostly a great experience. Pick up was awesome and prompt at our Airbnb in the city center. The car was a good shape and we had no problems with it. Drop off at Sea-Tac was a little stressful when the Kyte Surfer was unresponsive and getting towards the end of the time window. But he was only 5 minutes late, so it wasn't a big deal. Not sure if I'd try an airport pick up since who-knows when your flight will actually land and the Surfer might leave if you can't update your meet time. But the meeting spot is a short walk from the terminal near the light rail station, so it's not inconvenient. read more

I read some of the problematic reviews and decided to chance it - had a FANTASTIC experience. My delivery was just to my house so I didn't have issues other people have mentioned. The booking process online was extremely easy and straightforward - honestly I think their UI is better-designed than many. I got good communication leading up to the rental - just enough to be solid. My surfer showed up just ahead of the window but waited until the prescribed 10-min "zone" ahead of booking time. They were *really* kind, helpful, and informative - the car had the weirdest transmission controls I'd ever seen, and they made sure I knew how to operate it. Getting the rental agreement signed through the app was super fast and easy. The car was awesome - clean, comfortable, and being able to rent a guaranteed AWD was the entire reason I did this rental. Other services don't guarantee AWD, and I was going over Snoqualmie Pass and needed to be SURE I would not require chains (or risk a fine.) The GMC Terrain did fantastic in some slightly sketchy conditions and it was exactly what I needed. My pickup surfer was right on time, and again, extremely friendly, helpful, and pleasant. Nothing I needed to do but hand over the key and let them take it away! I get that under some conditions Kyte might not work out well - but unless you need that, I frankly think it's BRILLIANT and would be completely happy to work with them again. read more

We used Kyte for the first time today. We needed a car last minute because our car broke down and was towed. I scheduled to have our rental drop off at 7am the evening before. Everything was verified and confirmed right away. Drop off was so easy and on time. They text ETA. We ended up not needing the car for the amount of time we rented it for and I messaged in the app to have them pick up sooner and they were able to adjust my short notice change and picked up the rental within 3 hours after scheduling. The only down side is they can only issue credit and not fully refund but we will be using this company again and have been completely satisfied with the ease and timely manner of this service. Covers parts of Seattle (I live in the burbs) so I chose a Starbucks to meet up for the car pick up. It was smooth. Quicker than working with a car rental place and much cheaper too. It was so handy to pick the times and location myself. Both on pick up and drop off met courteous agents, no issues. First , they werent able to drop off the vehicle to west seattle so we had to Uber for $50 to go 9 miles . scheduled pickup at 2:00 pm and they said they running late til 2:22 pm . Driver didn't show up til 3:15 pm and made excuses . We missed an event on our itinerary being it's our first time in Washington. No point of contact and lots of delayed communication. I'm writing this as I'm waiting with the car to return @9:00 pm and they assumed it was 9am the next day when I have proof that they said 9pm tonight . it is now 9:22pm and we're here talking to an agent via chat . The car is cheap if you can find it. Horrible signage from the airport to the location. Don't follow the rental car signs because that is the wrong direction. Once you finally make it past the train, you are not there yet. You have to walk aimlessly down the street until you see their signs and wait in a sketchy parking lot. I had reserved a compact SUV in Seattle (where I am visiting my daughter). The experience I had today was, with no exaggeration, the worst I have ever had within the service industry. I should start by saying that, before I left Chicago, I had nothing but good thoughts for the people I had spoken with at Kyte. These feelings lasted until my husband and I got off the Link at Columbia City as instructed. After that, things went downhill fast. The first problem was the discovery that there IS NO PARKING LOT anywhere near the station and certainly not at 4818 MLK Way as we had been told. We walked completely around the station: nothing. I walked down to 4500 and up to 5000: nothing. I kept calling your office and the same man answered all six times. He was nice but very unhelpful, and he couldn't seem to understand, no matter how many times I told him, that there was no parking lot. As I had received a message that said that Joseph, the Surfer, would arrive between 1:51 and 2:01 and it was already 1:49, I was quite concerned since I had no clue where he would meet us. The man at the office tried several times over several calls, without success, to get Joseph to contact me, but Joseph was not even answering HIS phone calls. Around 2:30, after sitting in a small park for over an hour and a half, making six calls, and hanging on hold for a total of nearly forty minutes, Joseph finally called. If I thought that the horror show was at an end, I'd soon learn differently. Joseph sounded irritated when I answered the phone as he told me he couldn't find me. Um...right...I had been trying for an hour and a half to figure out where to meet him and had no luck at all. I asked him what kind of car he was driving so I could look for it; he replied, still irritated, that he was not driving, as he was out of his car looking for me. He further told me that he would give me three more minutes before he left. Honestly, that would have been fine if we could just get an answer to where exactly he was. He kept insisting that he was at 4818, but we were sitting at 4760 and he was nowhere in sight! (Again, 4818 and its alleged parking lot DO NOT EXIST.) I tried to press him for more specific information and he suddenly said, "I don't have to deal with this" and told me he was going to cancel my reservation. (ONE minute had passed since he had said three more minutes, BTW.) At this point, I yelled "Don't you dare!" but he had hung up. I called him back and was curtly told not to call him anymore as it would be harassment. Of course, I called the main number again and got the same guy. Give him credit for being even-headed in a bizarre situation, but he still could not understand what was happening. He told me he would call Joseph and I stayed on the line. TWENTY MINUTES later, he came back to say that, as he understood it, I had yelled at Joseph. I told him that had happened after what Joseph had said to me. Then he told me he would try to find another Surfer to bring me a car...but after ten minutes he came back to say there was no one else who could do so and, for the second time, he suggested that I reschedule my rental. I reminded him that I had told him the first time that I could not do so as I was already in Seattle on vacation. But as there was clearly nothing to be done, I told him to go ahead and cancel it. So here I am, eight hours into my visit to Seattle. I have no transportation and am using Uber to get from place to place. If this is how Kyte runs its business, you will not be around for long. Honestly, it was a disaster all the way, starting with the emailed instructions to wait in an invisible parking lot. (And why on earth could the car not be delivered closer to the airport...say at one of the other stations we passed? If you can drive it to people's houses, surely you can get closer to SEA-TAC.) Easily the worst car rental experience of my life, and I had an Italian company rip me off for $100 once in Rome. Kyte: 2/10 (The business model is good, but the execution was inept and rude.) It's interesting that I see mostly 4/5-stars along with some 1-star reviews. Sounds like some people have had bad experiences with Kyte. I'm not one of those. I hadn't even heard of this company but when I searched for a car in Seattle on autoslash.com they came up and were WAY cheaper than the "big" guys - Avis, Hertz, etc. Then I see that they deliver the car to you? It seemed too good. I needed a car in downtown Seattle and the best deal I could get from a "major" was at a branch 45-60 minutes away on public transportation! I decided to give it a shot. My "surfers" voice-called me each time to let me know their progress and they were either early (my drop off guy) or right on time (my pickup person). All in all, a totally smooth experience and the car was a new Toyota Corolla, fine for my needs. I picked it up and dropped it off right outside my hotel - it couldn't have been easier. I saw the review from the person flying in and getting a car at the airport. I agree that it's stressful to be locked into a pickup time when traveling by air, with all the possible delays that can happen. Kyte may not be for everybody or every situation, but for me it was a win. read more

Kyte is much cheaper than other car rental companies. However, it is not like a regular car rental company. It doesn't have a rental lot at the airport, so you have to meet the Kyte "surfer" (the person who delivers the car) at a specific location near the airport at a very specific time (you have a window of 30 minutes). If you miss the delivery window, you not only don't have a car, but you get charged $25. I flew into SeaTac and was not aware of this. When I signed up for Kyte, there were no warnings (or if there were any, they were probably in small type) that you had to show up at the drop-off location at the specified time. The confirmation email also didn't provide any warnings or instructions about the importance of being at the drop-off location on time. So when I signed up, I picked a time around the time that my plane would land -- which is standard practice for other car rental companies. When I landed, I received a text that my Kyte surfer had already left and that I was charged $25. When I tried to get another delivery scheduled, Kyte told me that they didn't have any surfers who could deliver the car that evening. So I also didn't have a rental car. If you're flying into another city, I would definitely not recommend Kyte. You don't have control over the flight, so if it's delayed by even 15 minutes, you'll likely miss the Kyte drop off. read more

LOVED it! Simple app, and you get a car personally delivered to your door, and you can drop it off at an area convenient to you (the airport)! Great for vacationing. Getting the car was super easy through the app, my drop off surfer was early and friendly. Picking up, the surfer was a little late, but had great communication with their ETA. The car was perfect condition and HALF the price of a traditional rental car. I would completely do this again and I'm just sad that they don't have it in my area. read more

Terrible experience. Initially I found it difficult to figure out coverage area within Seattle for delivery and return. And just when I figured it out over chat and their maps, I was able to book a trip and pay, but THEN they had the entire reservation canceled in literally about 10 seconds when the AI decided it could not verify my uploaded driver's license and selfie. The chat tech said that there was nothing they could do except issue a refund in 5-10 days. SO they wasted my time, offered me no remedy, and tied up my credit card for 5-10 days. If you want to risk your time and take your chance in booking, be sure to get your documents verified ASAP so that you won't get canceled right before your trip and be left stranded. read more

I WAS TOLD I WOULD RECEIVE EXACT INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE I LANDED IN SEA TAC SEATTLE...ELEVEN DAYS AGO IN AN EMAIL..upon arrival, no text. nothing....except automatic replies "what are you colling about? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5??? I replied where's the car? Where do I go? for nearly 3 hours, on and off the Light Rail, to the Rental Center, in 38 degree weather with luggage...are you kidding me? "Where's my surfer"???/ What car?? Where to go at the Light Rail?? I finally rented another car ($300) with National because I couldn't get in touch with them, through cell or text...and then was charged $25 dollars for being late??? Now I can't get a refund. And trying to contact and get an answer? Another 2 hours. Priceline connects you to KYTE. Now they are keeping my $189 + 25. and have my cell, email and bank account...oh and now "escalate to manager" with your issue. I am sure this was a scam....unbelievable... read more

Kyte was literally THE most stressful car rental I've ever done. I flew into SeaTac and of course you have to HOPE you land and can get over to where the car is to be picked up within 15 mins of your chosen time... a very seedy small lot with several shady people hanging out in their cars watching everyone (most certainly NOT there to pick anyone up in a car-share way............). If your flight is delayed, you're screwed. My flight was delayed taking off by an hour, so luckily it was JUST over the 2 hour window from when I was to pick up my car, so I was able to change it for free... but this was the start of the stress. Upon arrival, I actually got to the seedy lot about 20 mins early. I ended up having to wait 40 mins AFTER my chosen time on a Kyte surfer that was late. Now, there was NO indication of who was coming, what kind of car I was actually getting, no contact info, nothing. Then about 30 mins after my chosen time, all of the sudden someone was calling me... it was the person bringing the car to me... a Kyte surfer who was returning the car so they could fly out. Now, keep in mind, they were 40 mins late by the time they got to me. I had been standing in this seedy lot for an hour by then. The app is the least helpful app I've ever used in my life. Again, no way to contact anyone, no idea where anyone was.... I was just standing there, hoping something would happen. There are NO explanations of anything except how to get to this seedy lot in ONE of the many emails I received. This info wasn't even in the app itself...!! So upon returning the car, some friends and I had a nightmare situation where they got locked out of the room where luggage was stored in the place where we were staying. This was within the 2 hour window of needing to return the car. Did I mention that there is NO WAY to contact anyone. So fast forward to the exact time I was supposed to be returning the car (meanwhile, we're now cutting the lock off of a door to retrieve our luggage), the Kyte representative that was supposed to pick up my car called me. I explained the situation, and said I was leaving RIGHT THEN as we just got our luggage out of the room as I was speaking to this guy. I said I'd be to the lot in 20 mins, he agreed, and we hung up. I sped to the lot and arrived in 20 mins. There was no one to be found except the SAME shady folks hanging out in their cars at the lot. I was now late and needed to run to the terminal to catch my flight. I called the number back who'd called me 20 mins earlier, and he said he left the lot as his supervisor told him to leave and go to the next job. Ok??? What about handing over my car? I couldn't just stay w/ the car, I had to catch my flight. There was literally NO PLAN for anyone to come get this car. It was on me to stay w/ the car until God knows when. Well that wasn't an option. I told this guy I was leaving the key outside next to the windshield wipers so it was hidden, but there was NO way I was hanging out in this shady lot til God knows when. I took off to the terminal. LITERALLY as my flight was backing away from the gate, I heard back from the guy that he just got back to my car and everything was ok. Meanwhile, from the time I left my car, until the time I received this text, I'd tried to reach customer service thru the app. They finally responded after 52 minutes. 52 minutes of keeping this app alive!!! And they were like NO you must stay with the car. Yeah, sorry, I'm on my flight now. Not my fault your person couldn't wait 20 mins after I explained what was happening, and his supervisor told him to leave, which meant, leaving me... the customer... essentially stranded. No way. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. Oh, and the person who came back to get the car said he had his supervisor re-assign the car to him after receiving my texts freaking out.... as he felt bad for my situation. Can you imagine? I wish this guy good karma, and his supervisor the WORST for telling him to leave me stranded. Awful experience. OH, and I still was charged the $25 late fee lmao. Pay the extra and rent w/ an actual reputable company. read more

My experience using Kyte was seamless from start to finish. It was easy to book, easy to get the car (they delivered it right to my door), the car itself was clean, seemed new, and then they picked it up from me when I was done. The man who delivered my car was super friendly and was able to answer a few questions I had too. The service almost made me feel like a VIP haha! Best part is that the cost was comparable to any other car rental service. My only complaint is that Kyte is not in Phoenix-- I wanted to use it for my upcoming trip there and unfortunately will have to use a different service. read more

Kyte is an amazing service. Just a few clicks on an app & we had the car rented and the drop off / pick up from our house was a dream. Extending our rental time was easy too which helped a lot when our primary car was in the shop longer than expected. As a mom of two little kids this company saved me time, energy, and stress. Couldn't go beyond the verification process even after contacting customer service. They say they somehow "couldn't verify my identity"??? No solution from customer service. . .I guess I'll never rent from them. read more

The day before my rental I was told that Kyte was out of the economy car I requested but they offered to give me an SUV with no upgrade fees; that was fine but more notice would have been nicer. On the day of the drop-off, my drop-off time changed three times. The car was delivery went smoothly enough, but the 'surfer' neglected to tell me that the gas tank would need to be filled. So halfway on my trip, the gas light went on and I had to pull off the freeway to fill up the tank. I contacted Kyte to ask if it was normal to drop off a rental car without a full tank of gas and I was told it wasn't typical but that they would credit my account $50 to cover the price of gas. After the car was picked up, I was told I would have to rent a car from Kyte again to take advantage of my $50 credit. I was under the impression from the initial conversation that they were going to credit the card I used to rent the car but I was told twice that Kyte was unable to provide a retroactive refund to my card (I work in customer service and I find this hard to believe) and I could only take advantage of the credit next time I rented from them. So due to an error on their part, I ended up having to pay $50 more for the rental than what I was told it would cost. Super unimpressed, won't use it again (so I'm out $50), and I would never recommend this company to anyone. read more
