Overall, Kyte does a great job. I've rented from them about 20 times, and as a general rule, the service Kyte provides is invaluable. Paying a small premium to have a car delivered instead of having to find your way to a zipcar rental or another rental area has been hugely helpful. The customer service representatives in the app itself are polite, although occasionally slightly obtuse, likely due to corporate scripting. Where things get shaky, though, is in the app itself. In general, the app works quite well. It's easy to book from an address Kyte covers, and the price is generally very reasonable. However, when the app has problems, it REALLY has problems. As of the current version: 1. Deleting certain credit cards is sometimes impossible. And once your card has an issue, for example, when I switched phones, it becomes impossible to delete. 2. When the app has any issue with your credit card, as it did with mine, the app can just spontaneously delete all of your trips. It deleted 13 future trips. And because pricing on Kyte is heavily influenced by when you book, this could mean you end up paying far more when you re-book. And 3. There is no phone support, and escalation is all by e-mail so if you actually want to discuss your issue, as I very much did mine, there's no one who can really help you in a timely manner when something goes horribly wrong. So overall: Kyte provides a great service with amazing front line workers. However, their mediocre and even occasionally broken user interface really hinders their ability to provide the best possible service. read more

I needed a car and was looking around since the prices for Enterprise, Avis and Hertz were outrageous. I came across an article which mentioned Kyte AND had a promo code for $50 off, so I figured I should check it out. I was about 3.5 weeks out from the date I would meet them for pick-up, provided all the information that was needed and figured I was all set. Wrong. This is what their website says regarding a deposit (and see photo): "a deposit of $300 (and $500 for debit cards) is held starting 24 hours before your booking". Unfortunately, that was not true. Deposit was taken 3 1/2 weeks before the rental, and I was purposely trying to not use that card for any charges at that time. Note to Kyte: either fix the glitch which automatically charges right away, or fix the terms on your site! read more

Kyte - The charging of the card was IMMEDIATE; my rental was about 25 days away - Car Rental Near Me

This is the worst rental company ever!!!!! Their cars are dirty and REEK of smoke. I arrived to work reeking of smoke!!!! It was disgusting. They gaslight you with credits that don't make sense. Do not get involved with Kyte.... You will end up with a horrible headache. I needed to rent a car to get to work and scheduled it last minute as it was an emergency. Kyte promised that the car would be delivered at 9am. I was waiting for the car in the morning and it did not show up. I checked the app and last minute it said no one was available until 11:30am to deliver the car. I was surprised that I did not get any notification, no phone call, no text. I got on the phone and called them and agreed to get the car at their location. They charged me a reschedule fee, $25 when it was their fault and continued to charge me for a delivery fee of $21 for the final bill when it was ME who hustled and got the car and was 30 minutes late to work. Oh and my favorite!!!! Is I was charged $8,55 and then credited for gas when I had the car picked up, the tank was full. I intentionally woke up early to fill the car with gas. So it seems that the person who picked up the car HAD A JOYRIDE FOR WHICH I WAS CHARGED. When I got the bill I asked for the delivery and the reschedule fee to be taken off my bill which should have been a total of $46. So they said that they did and my bill went from $194 to $184. They said all the different credits were applied. I spent about 2 hrs trying to get this resolved and still they were justified that the reschedule fee and the delivery were taken off. This company GASLIGHTS their customers. Basic math is objective not subjective. When you subtract $46 from $194 it equals $148. But in Kyte rental company math $194 minus $46 equals $184. I am still bewildered by this Kyte math!!!! Don't use this company, you pay and then end up doing their work for them. Their cars reek of smoke, they are dirty. read more

Kyte - That white stuff is actual brown dirt. I wish I could give you a sampling of the smell but it reeked of smoke. - Car Rental Near Me

My experience was nearly flawless. Drop off from the "surfer" - the people who drop off the rental car at your desired location - was very smooth and took only a couple of minutes for the handoff to complete. The car we got was much better than what was advertised, and half the cost of what I would have normally spent at Enterprise. Customer service answer time was super quick, the person spoke professionally and fluently, and addressed my concern very quickly. Pick up from the surfer was also smooth, but the only problem was that she arrived 10m late. Fortunately, her being late didn't affect me but time has been an important factor for my trips in the past. If they nail punctuality, then it's an easy 5 stars for me. Overall, I'm very satisfied and I will likely use them in the future. read more

Love Kyte! The surfer brought my car on time, and the vehicle looked great. The check out process was simple, and there were no hassles. I signed off the agreement and was ready to use my rental. The car was such a smooth ride to where I need to be. Impeccably clean, audio was great; and there's nothing wrong with the car. All that for an affordable price? -- Amazing! Make sure to check your inbox for any Kyte coupons. -- It'll save you money! Getting Kyte for 24 hours was much cheaper than having to get ZipCar for few hours. Just be aware that you may want to look into the parking rules in your city so that you won't get ticketed. If you live in Cambridge, you are permitted to buy one visitor parking pass for $25! read more

The actual rental was OK. Unfortunately there is no decent opportunity for communication. We had left a bag in the car. We had to fill out a form to communicate that. The message back was they would arrange a drop off point. We requested it be at our hotel since we didn't have transportation anymore. They emailed a window of time and a location. They chose an intersection over a mile away. So we ubered there and had a half hour window to wait at the intersection, in 40 degree, windy, weather. There was no way to ask for an eta, car typy/color or anything. No one showed by the end of the window of time, and we were late for getting to the airport. So we ubered back to our hotel empty handed, then to the airport. There were no other attempts at communicating from Kyte and no way to reach the driver to make sure everything was coordinated right. Still not sure if they will ship or things to us or what. read more

Fantastic experience. First time renting through Kyte. Drop off was 2 minutes and the pick up was seamless - I even changed the time and it was no issue. The online help function was so quick and easy. The car was brand new - 25 miles on it. And it was inexpensive ! I'm converted. read more

Surprised by the negative reviews -- was pleasantly surprised by how seamless the process was! I mistakenly put the wrong address for pickup location but it was resolved with a quick call, text exchange, and $25 fee (which I thought was reasonable). Car was clean -- not new car clean, but clean -- and a new-ish model (I know nothing about cars but this isn't Rent-a-Wreck). Pickup and drop-off were a breeze and Surfers were super friendly, polite, and professional. Got an invoice for gas the day I returned (which they text you about beforehand -- they refill to the level it was when they dropped off and charge you average price for the city). Haven't heard about tolls yet so will update if need be, but all in all delighted I found Kyte. Much more affordable and convenient than traditional rental. read more

Okay, I wanted to love Kyte, but sadly it's getting a 1 star review. Let's start with receiving a dirty car. The "surfer" was great, but the car reeked of weed. Not saying it was her doing, but the car just stunk and there was mud and dirt on the outside and some trash inside the car. I filmed all the scratches and dirt but can't upload because this only takes photos. But the "surfer" was great and helped us load the dirty car before heading out. We drove from Boston to SoHo in a day. The "surfer" who was meant to pick up the car gave me a window of time he'd be at the hotel. !5 minutes. I confirmed. I got there right at the 15th minute but he had left 10 minutes before that and would not return. I fed the meter to the tune of $18, called the company and got the nastiest customer service rep. I asked to speak to a supervisor and he got even nastier and kept asking me why. Wow. He needed to be fired for this, but I'm not sure they did anything. I wouldn't know because they never called me to make this right. Everything was by chat. Anyway, they said someone would pick the car up by 7:30. When I got back from dinner the car was still there, but now there were tickets. I spoke to customer service again and they said there was a miscommunication and that pick up was the next morning at 7:30am. I met the "surfer" outside when he came for the car and he was a total ass and acted totally put out. What a horrible experience. Byte charged me $25 several times for rescheduling their mistake. I had to chat them several times to get those charges credited. Horrible experience that they didn't seem to care about making right with a simple phone call to take responsibility and avoid me telling everyone not to ever use kyte. Way to go guys! *** my response to Emily. It's Kyte's job to follow up after an awful experience. It is not my job to chase you all down. It's my job to share my experience so others know that this company, based on the various reviews, is inconsistent when it comes to customer service. read more

I was excited with this service at first but extremely disappointed with their customer service. I lost an item in the rental and have been going back & forth with their team for more than a month. I haven't received any updates or communications from them. It's a great price & extremely convenient, but too early of a company with a severe lack to customer service & satisfaction. Be wary before you book with them! read more

Kyte is amazing - the convenience is unmatched, the prices fair, their customer service is good and where it's not optimal ie not having a telephone line - they do their best to accommodate such as when I sent a chat message indicating it was time sensitive & I need a call - someone called. The cars are new, clean with a great number of options. I literally haven't rented with another company in the Bay Area since. Additionally, when I did leave something behind in a car - they reached out, kept the item safe and coordinated pick up date & time. There was one experience during drop off that was a concern bc it involved drop off at their garage downtown but it was resolved. I'd recommend without question! read more

Car was clean but not mechanically taken care of! As I started my trip to nyc I notice the moment I was on highway. There was a thumping while driving , when I had went to stop to check. I noticed that when brakes were applied the car had a shake to it this had continued so I decided to turn around and cancel trip as I had no time to get another vehicle and make it on time to NYC read more

I would put zero stars if I could given their last minute cancellation less than 2 days in advance of my trip. Just be aware of the reviews here. I'm sure they're great if you can get a car. However, if you don't want to be cancelled last minute and in a crunch during a holiday weekend when there's no rental cars available and due to covid19 measures, a lot of rental car companies are lower on inventory than in the past, then maybe book with an legitimate rental car agency with a national name and brand. I checked for rental cars in the area for Labor Day weekend and of course kyte had a vehicle available. For Saturday to Sunday for a best friend's wedding in Maine. I booked the car and through an annoyingly lengthy process had to scan my driver's license back and front through a website service and wait for and received approval a few days later. They then cancelled on Thursday in the afternoon, making me scramble to find another rental car. They threw in a $50 credit for a future rental that I will probably never use because I don't trust a company that doesn't know their own inventory and can't change their website and update it to reflect their true car availabilities. They didn't even offer to upgrade to a bigger sized car to rent my, nada, nothing, just cancelled. Beware of this new company and the reviews at least for the Boston location and take them with some skepticism especially during major holiday weekends. read more

YIKES. STEER CLEAR. This company is a joke. I never use Yelp but feel like I have to warn others away from Kyte. *Caveat: this review is of the company itself and their absolutely shit processes/customer service/management. I don't fault the Support agents who tried to help* I signed up for their subscription service for a 3-month rental because it was cheaper than the larger corporate rental companies. Handoff was fine. Things were smooth until I misplaced the car key while traveling (shit happens - my fault for misplacing the key). What transpired next was WILD. Here's the quick and dirty, cause I don't care to give this company anymore of my mental energy than they've already wasted. - Spoke to no less than 15 Support agents over seven days via chat, phone, and "email" (which appears to link to chat...so don't bother with "support@drivekyte.com". it's all the same shit) all of whom gave me conflicting info and offered no solutions - Spent 5+ hours of my time trying to find a solution by myself after being told to "try a locksmith" and "replace the key" five times by Kyte (HOW is it the customer's problem to manage this?!) - Spent a total of 10+ hours talking nonsense back and forth with Support, trying to get help and getting nothing but useless, nonsense responses - Ended up having to pay out-of-pocket for a locksmith so I could retrieve my personal belongings from the car before canceling my subscription and walking away - Have received no apology, compensation, nothing. I relied on this car to commute to work, and to help my family with personal obligations. What a fucking mess. To the founders of this start-up, you've got major work to do. Thanks for wasting my time and money. read more

Pickup and delivery can be a bit difficult if you have delays or are unfamiliar with the area but the price for the vehicle is simply unbeatable. I have used Kyte several times and each time I got a car in good shape and the miles allocated are more than sufficient. And generally half the price of traditional rental car agencies. If I'm going where they are always my first choice. The surfers are always friendly and polite and they tip the tank off for you at the current rate no crazy charges. read more

Kyte is very cool, the car came straight to my door in Boston and I used it to get to my work training down in Brockton for the week. I would have given 5 stars except for being a bit deceived by the agreement, meaning they told me not to worry about filling up because Kyte would just do it for me at local prices. I thought oh wow definitely taking advantage of that! Then just before they are about to pick up they say they will refill at 6.28/gl... I screenshotted gas over the entire city. Summary - I loved the convenience, but be more straight forward in your language concerning refueling, this wording is intentionally deceiving. read more

Convenience. Convenience. Convenience. They drop your car off to your location. Pick up your rental from your location. Fast and you're on the road. Going forward I'll be renting from them. Not sure about the previous review I read, but they are honest. Fill the tank if you leave it 1/2 full.(as any rental car company would) very dubious about that review. My experience was excellent. I highly recommend. No issues. Great communication. Nice , clean cars. Forget the waiting in lines... Try them. You won't be disappointed. read more

tank was full and still was charged $9.99 to fill up gas. There is zero courtesy with Kyte.

Kyte will rip you off at any opportunity! I spilled some sauce from takeout on the hood of car and was charged $300 for an excessive cleaning fee. They had the audacity to claim they needed to treat the spill as "infectious material". This would have been a 2 minute job with a spray cleaner and a few paper towels. Even taking the car to the car wash would not have justified this cost. With a lot of email back and forth, they reduced the fee to a less outrageous, but still unreasonable $100. Also, they falsified the starting gas tank level being at 7/8. After sending them my dashboard photo, they shared their photo which was unambiguously at 3/4. They refunded the difference, but this demonstrates their low ethical standards centered around extracting fees from customers. read more

Kyte is good for two things, delivering the car and picking up the car. I am not a fan of anything else, especially their deposit policy. I do not like that they are deceptive about how long it'll take to get your money back in your account. They specify in the deposit policy that they will hold $300 if you are using credit and $500 if you are using debit. The money will be PLACED BACK IN YOUR ACCOUNT ONCE THE TRIP IS OVER. That's what they state in the policy. It has been 3 DAYS since my trip is over and I have yet to receive my $500 back. They are deceiving. People cannot afford to wait 3+ days to get their deposit back. Kyte attracted me because they are "cheap". Unfortunately I forgot cheap ALWAYS comes with bullshit. read more

Historically, it's been a flawless experience to rent with KYTE. My last experience was only partly so. They failed to inform me in a timely manner than they needed to "re-validate" my Driver's License (even though it was the same DL#, just renewed it so the only thing that changed was the expiration date), then I had to pick up the car (instead of having it delivered to me) because it would have been too late of delivery. Then at the garage the instructions were not really accurate (as to where to wait, what will happen, etc), and for about 15 minutes after I texted that I was there nobody answered, and the car only shwoed up 15 minutes late. Annd in the end it showed up with only 3/8 gas filled, even though the surfer who picked it up a day later told me that someone didn't do their job, as the car was supposed to always be filled up and washed (which it was also not). read more

I had a great experience with Kyte. Used them for a week out of Boston. Had to make a last minute extension of one day and it was no issue, was charged a higher daily rate for that one day than the others but it was totally reasonable given how last minute it was. The communication from them regarding terms, drop off timing, etc was excellent. I also like how the car came with EZ Pass transponder and there's no hidden fees for it at all. You just get a pdf invoice emailed to you that lists all the tolls you incurred with no up-charges at all. I am amazed at all the negative reviews on here, my experience was literally seamless and I'll likely use them every time I'm in a city that they are servicing. read more

In principle this is a good service but they charged me $46 claiming that they had to fill up the tank when I returned it full. I am not sure whether it is the company or the guy who picked up the car. UPDATE ON THIS - I corresponded with the company (Kyte) and they issued a refund right away - i.e. the company is OK but be careful with the pickup service and take a picture of the dashboard with gas tank. read more

My Kyte experience was terrific. Their pricing is super competitive. The differentiator from competitors is that they drop the car off at a time/place that you determine. They also pick the car up at a time/place that you determine. Additionally, they fill the gas tank after you drop it off for the current rate (not the inflated rates most rental agencies do!). Daily mileage allowance is 300 miles. It was simple to book the vehicle that I needed on their website. Communication throughout the process was great. Initially, an email confirmation when I booked. Reminder emails were sent, as the day of rental approached. On the day of drop off, I received a text from the driver, saying he would be there in 15 minutes (right on time). I needed to change my pickup day and was able to change my pickup time/day easily on their app. I received a confirmation email about the change. The pickup was right on time and I received a text from the driver when they were 10 minutes away. Right now, they only have service in 13 cities, but my hope is they will continue to grow. This is by far and away the best rental car experience I've had! read more

Unfortunately, I would give zero stars if I could. We never received our car. We reserved a car for 10am on a Wednesday in Boston. They gave us a pick-up window of 10am-10:30am, which is fine and what we anticipated from Kyte's FAQs. On the day of, we received a text adjusting the window for 9:45am-10:15 am, which was also fine. 10:15am rolled around, we never received any additional information on when the car would arrive, where, etc. Around 10:30am, we still received zero communication. I started a chat on the app to determine the issue, and we tried calling as well. We called twice, and both times we were hung up on. At 11am, we still never received a response from chat, and the car never arrived. Due the lack of car, we actually had to miss the events we were scheduled to attend. I had to email Kyte and request a refund and cancellation, and we NEVER received a reason as to why this occurred. Thankfully, Kyte did refund everything, but it was extremely frustrating to receive zero communication as well as have to cancel several plans during our first vacation in the past two years. read more

The car was fine, the driver was fine. What I was extremely disappointed with was Kyte's customer service. Six weeks after renting my car (for one day), I received a surprising charge on my account for $30. Kyte said that they had a bug in their system that had prevented them from charging people for tolls during a certain time, so they were retroactively charging my account because I had gone through some tolls during my trip. Six weeks ago. I can no longer remember if I actually went through tolls or if I paid for them myself during this trip, and therefore I can not verify this information. To me, it just seems like an unexpected charge from a company I paid six weeks ago, and it seems sketchy. This is on top of the fact that I was already charged for an extra 24 hours for turning in the car 3 hours late. I bit the cost on this one, but to receive another unexpected cost on top of all of this is too much. I've been trying to reach their customer service team via email and text to get this worked out, but they have not responded. I am deeply displeased with what seems like 1) sketchy and late charges, and 2) a lack of customer service presence. If there is a bug in your system, you should bite the cost. Not retroactively charge customers six weeks later. read more

The car itself was fine, but the customer service is terrible. Our "surfer" was over an hour late to pick up the car. He was not even planning to check in with us about the lateness. We eventually found his number and he lied about the estimated time he would be there. He even stated he had arrived on the app and then blocked my phone number, so that I could no longer receive updates. During this hour delay we missed a post funeral event and had to pay valet fees, because we were left with no choice but to wait. We tried contacting customer service the next day and had little luck. We called and were told that no one would help us and that we had to send an email. A manager reached out via email and offered a small future credit. When we explained that we did not want a future credit we received no response. Without any response to our email we simply received a small refund for the cost of our gas. Beware of terrible customer service and people who do not actually care about making their customers happy. read more

Love Kyte - Great car rental service. Simple process and reliable. One suggestion i would like to Kyte to consider is to have a rewards program for its members. Have been renting with Kyte for quite some time. I had a rental planned on the 25th and my flight arrived a little later than expected. I chatted with the customer care rep and told them that I would be an extra 10 minutes late. I then called and spoke directly to the sufer, who agreed to wait an additional 10 minutes. As soon as I arrived, I got an alert that I was charged an additional $25 and that I would have to wait 2 hours for the next delivery. The driver stopped taking my calls and literally had me stranded. When I went back to speak to customer care, at this point I am livid, I spoke with a Sony who when I told that I would be writing a review, his reply was, "sure, as I am not the Surfer you talked to who agreed to wait for another 10 mintues". Kyte is just not a good choice if you're flying to a destination, renting their car, then flying back home. I found it very difficult and stressful to meet up with their surfers within their narrow 10-minute window when travel can take hours. Any last-minute scheduling due to traffic, flight or luggage delays, or extra transportation to their off-airport meeting site will cost you extra. Secondly, their policy to never ship lost & found items back to the customer is terrible. For example, my carry-on bag tipped over as I was exiting their car when I was returning it, spilling all my car keys, house keys, work keys and other items into the car's seat. I did not notice their absence until I had flown home and realized I was stranded at the airport. I called Kyte immediately and they located my items right away, and asked for my mailing address. But now, a full week later, they have done nothing to return my items except to say multiple times, "we're waiting on a response from xxxx" (which never comes) and "our manager is going to call you at xxxx or xxxx" (which never happens). It's my first experience with Kyte, and they have failed miserably, so I cannot recommend them. read more

I filed the incident report with claims@drivekyte.com in December 2021, was finally given an update in March that the other driver's insurance had settled the claim but I have still not been refunded the $500.
