Hope... we keep hoping it gets better but it doesn't. If you come in they rush you to a table that has just finished their soup and salad so it's rush rush rush. Then the chef is so disengaged that it's not even worth the show..Should have just sat at a table. Steak pieces were so large you had to cut them up. Shrimp was tough and could have been changed and deceived. Unfortunately Japanese Steakhouse has closed and the place over by Trader Joe's closed as well. Haven't found a hibachi place that even comes close. Very disappointing. But we keep coming back to local Japanese places hoping that someone steps up. Ugh read more

First the food was amazing hibachi shrimp hit the spot and the fried rice was awesome no complaints whatsoever. Then the service it was pretty quick and after we ordered the chef came within 10 minutes quite fast for a hibachi place and the waiter was really nice and the chef cooked pretty fast. Finally we have the overall vibe, it was great and it felt really layed back and the music wasn't anything crazy but it still contributed to the overall vibe. I had an absolutely random experience here with friends, but it was fun! We were in the area with the goal of dining at a different restaurant nearby. Unfortunately we didn't have a reservation and the wait was going to be about an hour. Instead of sticking around, we whipped open our Yelp apps and found this Japanese steakhouse across the street. Their Yelp rating wasn't bad and it had been forever since any of us had been to a Japanese steakhouse so we headed there ASAP. We arrived, were greeted right away, and taken back to a table immediately. Our waters were out in an instant and I also ordered a plum wine, my guilty pleasure when dining in this environment. As for food, I ordered the shrimp Hibachi which also came with soup, salad, and two shrimps as an appetizer. As we waited for our chef to get ready, our table filled up to just the right amount of people. While our table was more on the quiet side, we made the most of it and our chef read the room (well, table, lol), really well. He didn't do much of the fun jazzy stuff you expect from a Japanese steakhouse but it was fine. I pretty much ate every bite of everything that was placed in front of me. I was really hungry, but more importantly, it was good eats. Fun fact: They also have sushi on the menu. My friend ordered a roll and enjoyed it. We attended a birthday party there last night and my partner has a current medical condition where he has to severely limit his salt intake. We called a couple days ahead and was told to just tell the server after we arrived. So, after we arrived we notified the server of the dietary request and about ten minutes later a woman came from the kitchen and addressed our whole group of 8 people, instead of the person requesting the modification, about the no added salt request. She kept saying loudly, "but it will have no flavor!" She made eye contact with at least 6 of us repeating "but it will have no flavor!" instead of talking to the person with the request. Also, the checks were messed up with only having one appetizer ordered for the whole group yet was placed on multiple peoples bills. read more

This Japanese steak house was amazing! My friend took me there for Valentine's Day. We had to make reservations and we still had to wait longer than expected which we didn't mind, it was definitely worth it! We ordered their Calamari Katsu, it was crispy and delicious! Chefs are really talented, they really know how to entertain you while grill your food! Their soup and hibachi is delicious! Place was nice and tables have glasses in between for social distancing. I got a chicken hibachi to go and I started to eat it and noticed a piece of my chicken had a piece of blue plastic of something unknown stuck to it. Literally cooked in. I called to tell them and they said I needed to bring it in because it was "hard to believe me" I let them know I live 35 minutes away and they didn't care. I would have wasted the same amount of gas driving there as the refund money. $20. I decided to not bring it in because it was a waste of time. But I don't know what the blue thing is and I threw my food away and was pretty disappointed. So gross and I'll never eat here again. read more

One of the best hibachi restaurants in the Columbus area! The food is always very tasty and filling. The wait for food takes a bit longer than other restaurants because of the unique cooking arrangements (they cook the food right in front of you). Other than that the everybody working there is kind and service is great! The atmosphere is fun and there are often many people celebrating special occasions such as birthdays. read more

This is my favorite place to go to for Japanese Hibachi in Columbus! It used to be called Genjis and is now called Kyoto, but it is the same chefs and the same food. The best time to visit is during lunch because the prices are reasonable and the portions are good as well. I love that they offer bean sprouts! The sushi is always fresh and the yum yum sauce is on point! Another bonus is they also have different flavors of Mochi for desert which you can't get at some of the other Japanese restaurants. read more

Pretty disappointed by my experience at Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse. We arrived here on a Thursday around 6:30 pm and had a reservation prior. We were seated about 5 minutes after the reservation which was great but no one came to our table for drinks until 7 pm, when the hostess was seating another table. It took 30 minutes to even get my water let alone by drink that I ordered at the same time. There was NO social distancing at all at this restaurant and I understand it was Restaurant Week in Columbus but cmon it's a global pandemic. The area across from our table had about 15 people right next to each other and a small barrier that was on the table only, the seats had nothing blocking. At my side, there was us (party of 2) and another group of 3 and then they sat another party of 2 right next to them which of course was way too close when I was only one chair from the other group already. The group of 3 asked to be reseated and it was a whole ordeal. I haven't even gotten to my food yet which is why my review was 3 stars instead of the 1 that I was planning on giving. Before we got our first course, it was 7:15 pm which is disappointing as it was 45 minutes before we got soup and salad. The soup, salad and appetizer of course one was very good after we got it. I was very impressed by the spring rolls. I ordered filet and shrimp that were very good. I am not a vegetable person but when I told our chef that I didn't want anything but zucchini, he went and got me just zucchini which was a huge plus. Thank you for making a special portion for just me! By the time we made it out of there, it was 9 pm. Don't think I will be back but I appreciate the effort of the chefs part. read more

My husband wanted to go out for sushi and so we wanted something nearby our home. We thought of this place as you can sit and enjoy the staff make the hibachi meal in front of you. It didn't take long to be sat. We didn't mention it was my birthday because I didn't want my picture taken for the front bulletin board like they do in Cincinnati at another Japanese restaurant. I actually know the owner of this restaurant too, since he used to live nearby me. I like how his restaurant is an inviting atmosphere. The food was alright, but if my husband was writing this review he'd say spectacular. I just felt like the ginger in the salad seemed runny and bland as many have already mentioned. Also the fried rice is nothing special when they give it to you. Just nice to watch the presentation of it being made. If you want good presentation of food and nice atmosphere this Japanese restaurant is for you. I did think the sushi is really good too. I got the happy dragon and everything was fresh and tasty. I almost ordered carry-out during Restaurant Week and never got to visit. I am glad I waited until I could go and dine inside. The wait was worth the experience of watching our food being prepared on the large grills. We went during lunch, it was really quiet with only a few other patrons. The chef mentioned they are a lot busier during dinner time. Our experience was great with friendly fast service all around. Our waitress was nice, and our chef cooking our lunch was fun to watch. Lunch portions are not as large as dinner, but don't let that fool you there is still a ton of food. We got a sushi roll as an appetizer, and then got soup with the hibachi lunch portions. I got the tuna hibachi, it was delicious. I had enough leftover for lunch the next day. This is a nice place to go with larger groups to celebrate a nice meal out together. read more

I will always miss Genji, because it was my go to Teppanyaki place. House of Japan always felt "not as good as Genji" and Japanese Steakhouse downtown closed (which was my go-to cheap Japanese lunch). This review is for a To go order my friend picked up for me, while she was having a late lunch with her kids. The to-go order was massive - I mean, it's what you expect from hibachi, right? A large amount of food, including the shrimp, miso soup, and salad - which had dressing that was a combination of yum yum and ginger, I think? It's one of those - "I am craving this, but my kids don't like teppanyaki, and it's weird going solo, so I don't go" - but hell, if this is how they handle to go orders, I'm going to order more to go. My friend said she enjoyed the experience, as did her kids, although she missed the "pure" yum yum sauce for the salad dressing, so take from that what you will! read more

NOPE! Save your money. This place gives Asian cuisine a bad name. Food was mediocre, servings portions were small (I like leftovers for when I get hungry an hour later), menu was expensive, hibachi area was greasy and dirty, waitress was abrupt, chef was lacklustre. Had to suffer through two bouts of loud drumming and singing from other grills celebrating birthdays. So much for a relaxing family dinner. Final insult was an 18% gratuity for three adult couples after tipping waitress and chef. Only bright spot was the delicious salad dressing which was sparse on the meagre salad. My second time there because I believe in second chances but I learned my lesson. We won't be returning. No wonder the place was near empty on a Saturday night on a Buckeye bye week. read more

This place has changed, and in my opinion, it's time to close and put something else in. I went here and was seated by myself at the hibachi table. My waitress as me what I wanted to order I told her I was allergic to mushrooms and didn't care for the shrimp but I would like some extra Zucchini. The waitress told me there no there are no substitute, and I had to pay more. $3 for extra Zucchini even though I wasn't eating the shrimp or mushrooms. I then asked what was in the avocado rolls, and she said just Avocado, and again, I couldn't customize and add cream cheese and cucumber like most. Then she told me I could just not sit for Hibachi. I could sit at a table and order other stuff. I didn't want that. During the cook, a spatchula came flying at my head and almost hit me. Our cook is either still training or should not be doing tricks with the cooking utensils near customers. Also, he put two fillet minions on the grill and then just threw the second one on a tray. So that was either wasted or some poor customer who ordered a fillet got that one a pre-cooked fillet just thrown on a tray where everything else was sitting. So they don't accommodate or allow substitution, there may be some food safety issues and the chefs are not trained well, and doing the tricks becomes dangerous. Sadly, go to a different Hibachi place until they figure out the customer is more important than saying no. The food was ok for $35 with tip. I only got chicken, steamed rice, small salad, and soup. I also did have a glass of wine it was $7. To me it was a disappointment across the board. First time trying Teppanyaki. To me, teppanyaki is more known for the tricks the chefs perform while cooking rather than the quality and taste of the food. It really boils down to being more about entertainment. I will say I found it entertaining and it was an overall cool, new experience for me. I ordered the salmon and steak combo, which came with soup and salad as well. Portions were pretty big and I had a groupon so overall this place was a pretty good deal for me. A very tasty Japanese steakhouse that is EASY that's easy to get a reservation or walk-in and get seated immediately... We had the hibachi grill where the chef cooks tableside. Everything was very tasty - steak, chicken, scallops, shrimp. All good. I was pleasantly surprised - the food was good, portions were huge, the staff was friendly, and they have LOTS of hibachi tables. In fact, we ate at Kyoto because a similar restaurant that we frequent had an hour wait. We walked in to Kyoto and were seated immediately. We'll definitely return. Good food. Fair prices. We were in the mood for hibachi and saw a groupon for this place and decided to try somewhere new. It was ok. Nothing special. There was no one at the host stand so we waited a bit before someone came by and said the host would be with us soon... so we continued to wait. For dinner: We got a sushi plate of 3 rolls, a steak & shrimp hibachi and a chicken & shrimp hibachi. The lettuce in the salad hadn't been well drained, so the dressing was watery and the lettuce was sitting in a couple inches of liquid. Not appetizing. The spicy tuna roll didn't have much flavor, nor was it spicy. The chicken and shrimp were way over cooked. The steak was ordered medium, but served well done. The ginger dressing was good, but not great compared to other places we've been and I was not fan of their version of yum yum sauce. It was watery and way too sweet. Overall, it was disappointing and too expensive for what we received. For the same price, head over to Daruma for perfectly cooked meat, tasty sauces and friendly service. read more

This place used to be a Genji which was one of my favorite places and holds a special place in my heart. Right outside a Sams Club and Home Depot parking lot. Great location, and nice parking lot. Beautiful Japanese Decor inside and out. We were able to snag a 50% coupon from Tv deal of week and was not disappointed. We got the dinner for 2. My family flew in from California specifically to revisit a family favorite. This place IS LIKE NO OTHER. We found out that originally named Gengis was under new management. We had a fear that there was going to be a fear of a decline in quality in service and/or food. In, fact the EXCEEDED our expectations and we were thoroughly impressed. The food was INCREDIBLE, it made taking 3 planes to arrive worth the trip! Wayne our waiter delivered excellent hospitality. Our chef, Guapo did a spectacular job. His cooking was incredible, he was funny, charming, entertaining and personable! Our family is used to the usual routine show that Japanese steakhouse chefs perform, and he still manage to WOW us and he was able to pull off something DIFFERENT!
