This place offers a substantial outdoor deck, good during summer and good during corona-time. They offer a Chinese menu which is a good balance between appealing to the American palate and using legit ingredients. I could imagine why my tofu with preserved black bean sauce might raise an eyebrow to someone who's never tried it, but trust me, those preserved beans are salty and delicious. The tofu was excellently textured and the heat of the dish was moderate, balanced by a fresh garnish. I had a side of dry fried green beans as well that was good but a bit too similar in taste, I might have wished for a different vegetable. Rice wasn't included, but my dish wasn't swimming in sauce and I was happy to save the carbs. It was a hipster kind of place and was definitely pricey, but the flavor was better than other local Asian restaurants I've tried, and I would be interested to return. read more

Made a reservation - had read that it gets crowded. Turns out to be true. We arrive a bit early 6:45pm, but by 7:15pm or so it was packed. The menu is small, but has a lot of great options. We had veggies dumplings, dry fried green beans, and sichuan beef. Good amount spice to a couple of them. Good flavors all around. Overall the place is offbeat, funky, and pretty darn cool. The dried fried green beans are the best item on the menu, to the point were we (a group of four) get two orders for the table. We came here once before and really enjoyed our experience, but did not mention two of the many dishes we ordered were not good. This pushed us to come again, and we noticed the menu had changed. We ordered the "Dry Pot," this dish has the 'numbing' or Sichuan chili in it, to which they do not warn you of. I understand it is a Sichuan Chinese restaurant, but not all menu items have this chili in it so I believe it should be clarified. All that is asked is if you are "okay" with spicy food. This chili is not something me and my partner are fans of so we expressed that we do not like this dish. We weren't trying to be difficult and did not try to return any of the other items we received. When we finally were able to talk to our server about 10-15 minutes after we received the item, she got the manager and we were told they have "a policy" that they do not take items off your check or even replace it with an item that you do like. Again something that was not expressed before we ordered. In addition, the food coming out and the service was extremely slow even though the restaurant was by no means busy. For example, I ordered a kids menu item shortly after sitting down and did not receive it until about 40 minutes later. The items that we did end up enjoying are not good enough for us to be back. This wasn't it unfortunately. Spice on the peppercorn chicken was definitely there, but was there in a way not to be flavorful - more just like existing to harass your senses. Perhaps the dish I got was an outlier and doesn't define the entire restaurant, but it really made me leave with a confusing sensation without being tastefully satiated. The aesthetic was interesting with a traditional East Asian decor with some accents of grunge with it. Came here on a double date night with some friends. It's connected to the pour house so you have to kinda look closely to find the restaurant. Small, quaint and homey feel which I like and it wasn't super busy. Our server was nice and knowledgeable about the menu because we had one friend who doesn't like a lot of spice. The dumplings were delish, I wish we ordered more! Our server convinced us to get the Baiju flight and they're these teeny tiny cute little shooters but boy are they Potent. I couldn't tell you anything about them but the guy who dropped them off explained how they were made lol we ordered green beans, the hot crispy chicken and pork slivers with bamboo shoots and mushrooms. Everything was overall savory and spicy, I think a touch of sugar would've helped balanced out the meals. The average of a four star rating is a bit misleading for this restaurant. Firstly, it is relatively difficult to find quality Chinese food in Charleston. As someone who lived in LA, DC, and NYC, decent Chinese food was commonplace. Upon moving to Charleston, I quickly learned how spoiled I was living in major cities. We have had a handful of folks recommend Kwei Fei and we finally decided to have it for dinner tonight. Kwei Fei shares space with The Charleston Pour House, which can be a great place to hangout before or after your meal. The interior has Chinese-inspired design and the exterior has a lovely well-lit patio. You immediately get a "hip" yet relaxing vibe once you walk in. After getting seated, we quickly ordered our drinks Nice to Micho (basically a margarita) and Pu-erh Some Sugar on Me (tasty ginger drink) and was able to put our food order in a few minutes after: -Crescent Dumplings: Authentic pork dumplings with an added kick from the chili oil. Spicy but still savory and had that fresh taste. -Lamb Dumplings: This was actually a last second order because we loved the Crescent Dumplings and we felt like we couldn't leave without trying them. We actually enjoyed them more than the pork dumplings due to the distinct flavor of the lamb and the soy/black vinegar mix in the sauce. If you like lamb, this is a must order. -Sweet & Sour Chicken: Note that this item is unique to their Cantonese menu (which I believe is ending soon) but was still very good. As it sounds, you get that distinct Sweet & Sour flavor, but I'd say it's on the sweeter side. The chicken has a nice crunch and you get a decent mix of vegetables with it. -Golden Fried Rice: This one is the winner here. I love rice in general and this dish checks all the boxes in terms of quality fried rice. The char siu pork was perfectly cooked (i.e. not overly dried out) and the fluffiness of the scrambled eggs adds a nice texture to it. My lowest point of the evening was finishing the bowl with the serving spoon. Sometimes you just can't help yourself. Chinese Broccoli: We ordered a side of veggies because we were trying to be healthy; unfortunately, this was our least favorite dish. The flavors were fine, but we wouldn't say it's anything special. We will come back to see if the the dry fried green beans are still on the menu or we will just try another veggie dish. All in all, Kwei Fei has all the makings of a fun and delicious dining experience. Seriously delicious, authentic Szechuan eats right here in Charleston. Authentic Chinese cuisine is not one of the areas where Charleston shines. I have traveled through China and have Chinese family- those taste memories haunt me at times. But Kwei Fei can exorcize those hauntings and turn them into hot date realities. Kwei Fei is an outstanding little Szechuan restaurant tucked into the Charleston Pour House. It doesn't look like much from the outside - indeed, it'd be easy to overlook - and inside it's got a funky, irreverent vibe (be aware - they play their music VERY loud). But the food is simply spectacular, authentic Szechuan cuisine. For appetizers, we shared the marinated cucumbers, which had the perfect combination of sour, sweet, and fire, and the pork cheeks, which were reminiscent of tender rib meat and had a piquant BBQ-style sauce. For entrees, we had the mapo tofu, which was excellent, and the "pork slivers," which was basically yu shiang pork, also very tasty, though less spicy than I expected. My wife and I think we'd like everything on the menu. I've had Szechuan food all over the world, and I can't think of any restaurant that does it better than Kwei Fei. If you didn't know this place was here you could miss it as it is next to pour house. These two venues could not be more opposite! It's very cute, clean and welcoming inside. They have great outside seating as well even for windy days! The food was delicious but you MUST like at least some spiciness because pretty much all their food has it. The staff is great at introducing you to the menu and your preferred spice level to ensure you enjoy your meal which I sincerely appreciate. I do wish they had a larger menu. They also prefer you order family style and give 1 check which can be difficult for groups. The parking can be tricky. As one who loves Asian flavor and spice this should have been a homerun but it was a strike out. My lamb cumin noodle lacked balance, and you had to hunt for the meager slices of meat and vegetables. Sichaun cuisine should be bold and in your face, but this dish had the taste of raw spice and a salt bomb. I took a photo of the spices that coated the noodles like breading. I actually poured water onto the dish to try to balance it. My mouth was tingling, not in a good way. We popped in here for dinner, on our first night after arriving in Charleston. Our Air BnB host recommended it, and since the music next door at the Pour House wasn't starting yet, we decided to give it a try. I'm very picky about Asian food (I'm half Asian) and this place was delicious! Not your "typical" Asian cuisine. We ordered the cold marinated cucumber appetizer and the Home Style Tofu. You have to order rice separately (which I did not like). However, the flavors on both items was perfect. We didn't order more, because we didn't want to get stuck with leftovers. We ate everything without problem. To drink, we ordered the Psycho Killer and the O'Fortuna. My drink came in a really cute panda cup. Service was good, and prices were a bit high for the quantity of food we received. I was extremely excited to see Kwei Fei come to James island. The first time we tried to visit, there was a long line, and because there are no reservations there was a long wait. The hostess' words were "It's going to be one hour.. at the least" on a rather unfriendly tone. So, we left and came back a month later to find it surprisingly empty and we had a table within 10 minutes. Not bad! The Chinese decor is pretty cool in the place but there were a couple of weird details like an exposed power line (maybe waiting for a lamp to be installed?). We started out with drinks, and tried one of the cocktails on the menu, an aloe tequila mix that sounded promising but was plain awful. It was just like drinking skin lotion. Then I moved to the cider , which was listed under the draft beers and I expected to be served in a regular glass, but ALAS, It came on a tiny serving, and it was flat and un carbonated. I then switched to vodka sodas because you cannot go wrong with a vodka soda, but the price tag and quality of the drinks was lacking to say the least. The plain vodka soda was 10 bucks, which is too high for the area. The cocktails were about 15 or so.. definitely not worth it. After being underwhelmed by the drinks, I had low expectations for the food and I am happy to say that I was proven wrong. The food is excellent! The spicy chicken wings are made with a delicious rub and the other dishes we had were also great (green beans, tofu). The dumplings were okay.. kind of unremarkable compared with everything else. This would definitely be a 5 stars if the drinks were better. I will come back to try the dim sum on a weekend and update my review. read more

I've been wanting to come here for awhile, since I've heard their Chinese food is the best in town and packs a punch with the spice. Charleston is lacking in good Chinese food in general, so this may be top of that category, but none of the food we got had spice at all. We asked for chili oil on the side- that had great flavor but again no spice. All that said, the service was friendly and warm, and the atmosphere was great. We started the evening with a dish of marinated cucumbers...So Good! Think of spicy pickles pieces covered with sesame seeds but not so spicy that they don't offer a slight respite from the spiciness of the other dishes. Next arrived the veggie dumplings, Not my favorite but the wife enjoyed them. Next up on the menu arrived the thing that made my lips go numb...that deliriously wonderful numb to which pepper heads aspire. The Four Rivers Wings. Wow, super hot and then the spicy hits. Very flavorfu, coved with some cilantro to TRY to cool them off and worth the try. My wife went back with the Gong Bay Ji Ding ( Chicken, peanuts, Peppers) and I went with Dan Dan Mian. Covered Noodles, minced pork, wok CHoy and scallions. another great dish... I have however saved the end of the review for THE BEST DISH OF THE NIGHT...the Dry Fried Green Beans! Was excited to come here because of the supposed spice complexity. There's very few places where I dislike to the point of "Get me the F out of here immediately." The one redeeming quality was the great service. The wings were jumbo and despite being prev frozen, still delicious. I was disappointed to only get 4 of them especially since the price of them has come down and been stable for almost a year now. La Zi Ji was probably one of the worst meals I've had since moving here. I was told that the peppers were for aromatic purposes only and aren't typically eaten. Fine, but decor shouldn't comprise 75% of the entree. The photos on Yelp were not representative of mine. There was maybe only 3-4 ounces of chicken thigh total, which were sloppily minced into non uniform pieces before being fried. There were at least 10-12 smaller chunks of just breading that I chose to not eat. Same spice mixture as the wings. The Sichuan beef was striving for complexity, but whatever essence (floral?) is used in the broth confused the dish. My wife said it tasted like mop water. We picked the beef out and left most of the broth. Surprised to only have tacky white rice as an option. Chairs were very uncomfortable, with metal seat. Music choice was questionable and punk-leaning. Beastie Boys at a loud volume in a Thai place? The customers all appeared to be clones of each other, easy to put in a box, linear hipsters, that unfortunately you're within ear shot of. "Let me show you this organic honey butter I just bartered. Did I mention we were going to Joshua Tree? Patagonia. Carbon footprint. Vinyls. Barf. I love standard mall variety Chinese food. Fried rice, chicken, veggies. This is not that. This food is HOT. I don't generally look for hot food, I consider my heat tolerance to be average. Neither me nor my wife could finish more than a few bites of our entrees. We downed the white rice provided as a side and paid and left. If you're looking for cultural and are thinking about this place, you've been warned. Now, the food. Generally very tasty and textures were great. (What we could taste through the heat). Dumplings were surprisingly delicious and I hate dumplings. We went with Biang Biang and we ate them all because they were the least spicy thing on the table. The host guided us to the Dan Dan noodles, which, though they were too spicy for us to enjoy, did have a wonderful and unique flavor you won't find at any typical chinese joint. We also sampled a plate of the laziji chicken, which, again, though most of it was too hot to enjoy, had excellent texture, tasted great while we could taste it, and was a fantastic portion size. Our host, Emerson, was extremely helpful and really did a great job trying to help non-spicy people survive the menu, and he was very professional and knowledgeable about both the menu and how it translates to people who would be totally unfamiliar with the items on it. First time there, and only ate cold items since it was so hot outside. But wow! The most interesting food I have had in the Charleston area. Dry sautéed green beans with fermented black beans were out of this world (even if a bit too salty). Poached chicken on a bed of seasoned noodles was delicious. Shrimp in a Chile sauce was exceptional - spicy and fresh. Radish (daikon) salad with cucumbers was not to be trifled with. Small portions to share with the table at OK prices, given the quality. The only Szechuan restaurant in the greater Charleston area, Kwei Fei is the product of white folk who know their way around this cuisine. It's by no means a normal-ish Chinese restaurant. There is blaring hipster music and people with beards, which are not Confucian-inspired. I ordered an excellent cocktail, O' Fortuna, made with fortune cookie infused bourbon (whatever) and amaretto. It came with a fortune that was the lyric from a Black Lips song. That might all seem very wrong, but I'm plenty familiar with Szechuan cuisine and this place was right-on. We particularly loved the Gong Bao Cai Hua, roasted cauliflower with scallions, peanuts and chillies, and the Douhua Mian, noodles with silken tofu and a heap of chilies. I hope Southerners, some of whom believe their cuisine is spicy (it isn't), embrace this place, where the chilies are for realz. read more

We originally tried to cancel our reservation for Kwei Fei; it had been a long day exploring Charleston and the restaurant was certainly off the beaten path. We are SO glad that we were foiled by their stringent cancellation policy, as it was an incredible meal. The vibe was eclectic, with load music, funky decorations, and a bustling bar, but the server immediately made us feel welcome and recommended a few cocktails for us to get started with. We tried a gin and a tequila drink - White Peony and Double Ninth Moon. Both were outstanding. The gin was bright and floral, while the tequila was spicy and with strong citrus notes. Now without further ado, the food: 1. Dan Dan Mian - The sauce really stole the show with these noodles. It was peanuty with notes of cilantro and pepper. The pork had a great char, and the noodles were extremely fresh. Our only critiques were 1) there could have been more pork, and 2) the noodles were a tad over 2. Four Rivers Wings - They were out of traditional wings, so they served drumsticks instead, but the dish was still fire. The chicken was piping hot and the dry rub was smoky and spicy. My heat tolerance is medium, so these definitely pushed my comfort zone! 3. Hot and Sour Radish Salad - What a pleasant surprise. The radishes were thinly sliced and almost tasted a bit pickled. Cilantro and plenty of peppers were sprinkled over the top, making for a hot and fresh bite 4. Sichuan Beef and Rice - Thinly sliced beef, medium rare. Piping hot pepper broth. A mountain of rice. The cornerstones of a phenomenal dish. It needed a bit of salt, but overall a perfect main For dessert, we had the sweet cream ice cream, Sichuan style. Our server was amazing and after hearing about the bad experience we had with banana curry ice cream a few weeks ago, she gave us the Sichuan components on the side. The chili peanuts were incredible and we ended up sprinkling them on top, but we were glad we left the sauce off as it ate extremely savory. STRONGLY recommend dining family style so you can enjoy more dishes whether your group is large or small. Lamb dumplings were plump and the dumpling was on the thicker side but not too doughy. Came with a pickled chili, spicy bean paste and garlicky. Hot and sour fish was tender, meaty and sat in a wonderful broth. If you order this (and I highly recommend it), please request that it be served first because it is a milder dish and may get overwhelmed by the spiciness of the other dishes. La Zi Ji was crispy chunks of chicken thighs with chillies and Szechuan peppercorns - delicious. Last but not least we had the crispy lamb noodles. The restaurant is cute and has indoor and outdoor seating. We didn't go there with a reservation, but we were seated quickly. The service was good and had a nice environment, but I was disappointed in the dish, it was beautiful and welcoming, but the overwhelming amount of Sichuan peppercorns numbed my mouth completely, which doesn't generally bother me, but the taste of the canned bamboo chutes was the main flavor in the dish.
