Easily the grossest, most unkept place I've been to in a long time. Food is not good. Bland flavors and lots of grease, fish didn't seem fresh either. Smells like fish as soon as you walk inside. While it's true that this place is pretty cheap (with 10% discount for student ID), a student can have buffet here for ~$9 after taxes. But that's about it about this place's pros. Here's the cons: - Extremely bad food. The crabs and lobster claws are mixed together in a steaming plate. I cracked open a claw, and the meat just dangled down lifelessly. Did I mention the meat was brown? No thanks. - The seaweed looked like some kid have been playing with it with green food coloring. I swear I can put in a few in my water and have green seafood kool-aid. No thanks. - The fruits are extremely uninspired. Only ~2 plates of fruit were not canned - and one of them just had to be drizzled with more syrup? No thanks. - The sushi bar.... What's the point of having a god damn sushi menu featuring toro, uni, mackrel, hamatchi, etc when you don't serve any of these god damned sashimi? I have to update my review of Kwando. I've been there a few times now and the thought of eating there now makes me feel a bit sick. This place just isn't clean. The last two times I went, I left with a bit of an upset stomach. It might have just been too much spicy food (I had a lot of the squid salad with tons of chili peppers in it), or maybe some not-so-fresh sushi. I will probably still go back because it is convenient and cheap, but...I have to take away a star due to the fact that the word "Kwando" now provokes a bit of a gag reflex in me. read more

So sue me. I forgot to check in and take pics when I wen to Kwandos for lunch today. I was in a rush. For one: their fried rice is really good. I don't know why, can't pinpoint it, it's just good. The Chinese food at the buffet was similar to Panda Express. It's good. It probably has MSG. Everyone knows Chinese food is pretty unhealthy. So why complain about the MSG? The dim sum was okay. But I've been to Hong Kong and I'm from LA. There is no comparison. The sushi looked okay and my friend had some. She liked it. I like the fact that you can try 1 or 2 little pieces without feeling like you are wasting food if you don't like it. This is a good place for people to experiment. They also have a fruit bar and salad bar. It was well stocked. I didn't take advantage of the hibachi grill. It looked good enough but I just didn't have time. All in all, I will be back. I ate there on a Sunday afternoon, and it was packed. Kwando has a lot offer, but it is not the best Asian buffet I've been to. As another reviewer posted, drinks go without refills. Not the biggest deal, but it would still be nice to have them. I enjoyed hot and sour soup, the orange chicken, the stuffed mushrooms, and the General Tso's chicken. The first bite of coconut shrimp was great, but subsequent bites had an overpowering, fishy taste - a telltale sign of not being fresh. First time I went to Kwandos, i really enjoyed the food. I mean REALLY enjoyed it... The 2nd time, I left feeling like caca but just chalked that up to trying something new. the 3rd and last time I went there, I left feeling as if I was going to have a nuclear explosion in my belly and my butt. For the price and quality, it's one of the best deals in Chico. You can go to Raleys and buy sushi there and it will cost you 12$ already so for the value, you get more for your bucks.. Went to try this place out. Food was not good... the sushi was dry, not a lot of selections from that section, and the hot food was not appetizing either. Most of their entrees lacked any authentic style food and were usually bland. Their plates were insufficiently cleaned either which is a shame knowing it's a restaurant... Service was okay from the waiters, however their hostess sat us at a hot spot of so many people near us that it became a cluster. We asked to sit at a different spot and the hostess ignored it. I'm so conflicted about this restaurant... THE GOOD: They have a wide spread of food and we were able to try things that I normally would not order. Among that were foods I could recognize, since I don't consider myself a Chinese food connoisseur. I hear the hibachi grill is a recent addition and I have to say my favorite part of dinner. While it's no "Hula's Chinese BBQ", it wasn't half bad either. The crab legs were a nice surprise. Shoot, a plate of crab legs is worth the $12 dinner price! They have a soup table, sushi table, hot Chinese table, and some miscellaneous Chinese food that I'm not able to specify. Finally, they were open for Christmas, so they get bonus points for that. THE BAD: My girlfriend left with a rumbling tummy. Some of the traditional dishes were a little "off". For example, the sweet and sour soup shouldn't have been too hard for a Chinese restaurant to get right, but they managed to get that one wrong. THE UGLY: There were several foods we only took one bite of and then had to spit out! At a typical restaurant, that is unacceptable. However, my girlfriend assured me that this is part of the experience of a Chinese buffet and that Kwando's compared to the average. For this reason, I gave them an average rating of 3 stars. It's not that great as people said, but hey, it's a buffet. I do enjoy the student discount as my friends and I come here for occasional purposes. Their food is quickly done so that makes up for the quality taste, their atmosphere is very casual, their student discount is a keeper, and their service is just like any other restaurants. So, for a buffet where everything is quickly done, it is decent. For the casual atmosphere, student discount, and a good number of vegetarian options is where the key is at. The extra point comes from the waiter who I hope to get his name so I can request him next time. He isn't the typical annoying waiter bugging you every 10 seconds, but he always shows up when you needed him but too modest to ask for it. Great price for being able to eat as much as you want. However, I don't know if I'm allergic to the oil they use or what, but after two to three plates I've felt sick like i wanted to throw up. Maybe it's just I ate too much, which is easy to do. I kind of describe it as an Asian food Hometown Buffet, they are usually pretty busy but they replace the food trays pretty quickly. Oh my god I have found another place to make feel like I am at home. We went on a Saturday and it was very busy so the food was constantly turning. They had crab legs. They had delicious cheesey oysters, which are so hot you burn your tongue. The sushi was fresh. It was also half the price of what I am used to paying. PROS: It's cheap and budget friendly. Food has lots of flavors and tastes good for the most part. Good amount of dining area/space. Nice and calm dinning atmosphere. You eat free on your birthday with a party of at least 6. They also have student discount- bring your ID. CONS: Warning, some of the food is not for the weak-of-stomach. For some, the oils and flavors in the food may cause diarrhea, so prepare for war- in the bathroom. The trick to avoiding this is to not eat the spicy and oily dishes they have. The servers are nice, but they can be a bit irritating when they ask you "need anything?" every 2 minutes. They also need to do a better job at cleaning their plates that they put out. I don't come here a lot, but it's the only Chinese buffet in town. I only go for the crab legs and shrimp. They used to serve lobster- bummer. i want to give Kwandos three stars just because they have a dim sum section, and I love dim sum, but like some of the other reviewers are saying it made me pretty sick afterwards. I've only been there once, so this could be just one random expirence but I don't think I'll come back. While there was a lot of selection a lot of it appeared that it had been sitting there for hours on end. And while you pay 15$ for dinner there, all you can eat, drinks are extra. I didn't feel like the desert section was all that good either. I was just disappointed in this place and I have to say it just wasn't worth it to me. They passed their inspection, which is nice. It was our first time eating here. Nice selection of sushi (if you like crab and shrimp. There was some with tuna and salmon, but not much). There was also a nice selection of Chinese food, which was tasty. Kids loved the food and the dessert bar. The garlic green beans were our favorite! Those were delish. It was an Asian version of "Home Town Buffet." They had a koi pond in the front with turtles that the kids loved petting. The bathrooms weren't very clean, but at least it was a toilet. Yuck. Who doesn't love a good Chinese feeding trough? The food here isn't really that bad, but I don't come for the seafood. I'm more of a chicken kind of girl. First and foremost, what you have to remember is that this is a buffet. The food is not going to be gourmet. You can't expect a lot and no matter how much you wish their vegetable fried rice would taste better from one visit to the next, it is just not going to :( The hibachi grill is a nice touch. Although, the quality of the food on some days is hit or miss. Some days the beef they have on the bar is kind of brown. The service is pretty terrible and that's what kills it for me. Here is a pro-tip, drink whatever you have very slowly because it's unlikely you will get a refill unless you chase someone down. The people who clean the tables are also supposed to fill your drinks, they pretty much ignore the fact your glass is empty on the edge of the table and waiting to be refilled. It would be much more helpful if they just put the soda fountain someplace where customers could refill it themselves instead of having to wait/be ignored/chase someone for a refill. read more

Giving it a 5 stars because compared to the other Chinese buffet I have previously been to, it really stood out in terms of quality and quantity. My favorite dish was definitely Coconut Chicken and Jalapeno Chicken. It may be cheaper on other days, but I went here on a Saturday and it costs me about $10.50. I personally didn't experience anything negative as stated in some other reviews, but I could see it happening. Not very expensive, and you do get a lot for your money! You get what you deserve for going to a Chinese/sushi buffet. But we all love it. Good: AYCE sushi for $9 at lunch time - and it's not bad. I've had worse at sushi restaurants. It was busy, so they were pumping out fresh rolls; and i was swooping them up. Basic rolls, but some more complex and yummy ones as well. Too many had cream cheese in them for my taste ( does not belong in sushi ). I thought the coconut chicken was delicious, veggies were fresh, and the salad bar had tons of my favorite: fresh pineapple. The bad: Most of the buffet food that I tried. Fried rice and chow mien is bland and pale. Broccoli beef is rubbery. Wonton soup, watery. And these are the basics. Much of it just did not look appealing. They do have a hibachi option, with a large selection of ingredients. Although the buckets of raw meat did not call to me. Dessert didn't look like much either. Nothing I needed to try. Went to Kwando's today for dinner, which is a craps shoot whether the food is fresh, fresh hot, fresh warm, fresh cold, old, or just old nasty! 85% of the time its just old nasty all of the time! well today the food was okay, would say it was fresh warm meaning it was fresh out of the kitchen as i watched them bring it out, but the temp was not hot, so okay, the food was good, the fried baby shrimp were dry as always, but im use to that, the dim sum were really salty, but the rest of the food was delicious. now here is where my friend and i got stressed and totally upset. we ordered 2 buffet dinners, 2 diet pepsi's, and 2 waters, the waiter walked by the table, took the empty plates, LOOKED at the empty glasses where the soda was and WALKED AWAY, a few minutes later, he walked by and grabbed another empty plate, and looked AGAIN at the empty glasses where the soda was. we were furious! so went up to the counter and asked for the manager, who came to the table with the waiter, WHO LIED TO HER! said that i had told him that we had water at the table and did not want any more soda... I WAS AT THE DAMN BUFFET GETTING FOOD AT THE TIME!!! when i go to a restaurant and order a soda, and its got FREE REFILLS, i expect a waiter to not look at the cup, and walk away never to refill it. I was waiting to be seated , two other guys came up to pay and she looked up and helped them ...completely ignoring us still. When I spoke up she said she had to help them first . Horrible service .
