Dear Kwan Thai, I crossed the state border for you. I spent precious time during a lunch with a colleague and friend within your doors. And you were okay. This is not a love letter, but not hate mail, either. It's solid 3 Yelpy stars, and here's why. Prompt service. A little bit of attitude from the waitress when we had difficulty deciding what to order. SPICY................................................so spicy. Not sure if this is because our waitress was in a bad mood, or because my colleague and I are of ethnic backgrounds other than "White" and she may have assumed we can handle it. He may have, but my stomach is burning and it's been 3 hours since lunch! Tasty main dishes - lovely, complex curries, springy noodles, and nice jasmine rice. Terrible salad offered on the house. Tastes like "sweet and sour dipping sauce" glopped over iceberg lettuce with a few measly shredded carrot bits. Go with a peanut dressing, a Japanese carrot-ginger dressing, or a more complex Thai dressing with lemon juice and nuoc mam. Please spare us. Pearl River deserves more! Okay, so I should preface this review with two things: (1) I am not a Thai food connoisseur.... yet - just a HUGE fan. (2) Kwan Thai earns the fifth star partially in relation to other Pearl River offerings. It may not be 5-star worthy in NYC, but it is hands down the absolute best food I have enjoyed in my hometown of PR. I have ordered takeout twice and sat down twice. While I wish I had more dishes to comment on, I can't stop ordering the Pad Krapraow. It's simple - meat + chili garlic sauce + hot basil leaves + bell peppers + onions + rice on the side. THE BEST PART OF THIS RESTAURANT IS THAT YOU CAN ORDER AS SPICY AS YOU WOULD LIKE. I have only lost a battle with a spicy dish once. Ironically, it was at a Thai place in Argentina. My first time at Kwan Thai was almost my second loss. You choose between four spice levels (four peppers). When I asked for four, the waitress's kind face became serious as she warned me of the dangers of "Thai hot," and confirmed my intentions two or three times. If you're a serious spiciness lover, this type of forewarning gets you excited. To make a long story short, I was sweating, had to take a halftime bathroom break to blow my nose and collect myself, and enjoyed every second of it. Overall, amazing Thai food. Friends have ordered other things and been equally impressed. If you appreciate true heat that is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find in the restaurant world. PLEASE try Kwan Thai. read more

Excellent Thai food. You can get it Bangkok spicy too (although you can't send it back if you can't handle it)! While you can't go wrong with anything you order, the duck dishes are amazing! I really like the green papaya salad as well. For desert, I usually order the mango with sticky rice or the purple rice. I also like that they have one the local brewery's beers on tap. Nice setting. I don't normally do reviews. Mostly because most restaurants don't move me too extremely in either way. This one happened to have moved me in the direction of deep disappointment. I've tried this restaurant on a few occasions, but mostly due to the coaxing of coworkers. Nothing there has ever really "wowed" me and that's something I expect when I choose to order take out for lunch at work. Maybe asking to be taken on a culinary adventure is too much to ask, but at the very least, you guys really should have some peanuts on your "pad thai." To add insult to injury, when we arrived to pick up our order, the woman was rude about having to split our checks. At the end of it, she told us that we had to separate it ourselves. Kwan Thai has been our go to Thai for a long time. We love the food, we love the service we get from the staff, and we love the owners, Peter and Kwan. They are always so happy to see us. The food here is amazing. I've not had a dish I don't like or would not recommend. Favorites include Tom Yum Goong, Mee Grob, and any preparation of red snapper or duck, and the wonderful Thai salads (Yum) - especially the chinese sausage salad which is my personal favorite of the lot - followed closely by the duck salad. The spice level is perfect (they'll ask you how spicy you want something) - and generally we have left overs for lunch the next day. The bar feels seems to be a neighborhood hang out. This place gets really busy both with dine in and take out. They are continually adding new dishes and experimenting with combinations of flavors. read more

I had high expectations of this place as it came recommended by many friends. The first mistake was that I went on one of the hottest days of the year, and there was no AC. The wait staff was pleasant about it but just stated they couldn't do anything as the owners were in Thailand. We started with the Thai calamari, it was good and appeared freshly prepared to order. By the time our dinners came, it was too hot and uncomfortable in the restaurant to eat. We took a few bites of dinner and the rest to leave. It appeared that the few others that were in the restaurant were doing the same thing. Both the pad thai and pad see ew were decent, nothing special to write home about but was good enough. Kwan Thai is set in the quaint town of Pearl River which is loaded with pubs. The food was good, atmosphere ok. Football on the tube in the bar area made it a bit loud and distracting me from the silence of me and my food. I must add they actually had a red french wine on the menu, Toad Hollow, which was actually great with my Thai food. If you are somehow doubting the quality of food at Kwan Thai, try going there on a Friday or Saturday night... the number of repeat customers should give you a clue as to how delicious things are there! First off- Spicy equals Spicy! So don't ask for spicy unless you really can handle it! Secondly- Medium equals a fair bite of spice. And, if something isn't spicy enough, it's easy to add. Finally- My husband ALWAYS gets the Pad Thai. We've been spoiled by this Pad Thai, and it is the only one we like. No other Thai places makes it quite like this... And my favorite? Kaw Soy, hands down the best! Those who like Indian-style curries should check this dish out. I would say for Rockland, this place would be okay. No comparison to the Thai food I'm used to growing up in Queens and NYC but no matter, we still finished our dishes. Their Chinese Sausage fried rice is awesome! They were so generous with the sausage. The Panang chicken was a tad bland from what I'm used to but it wasn't offending. Their Pad See Ew tasted okay but the noodles and beef felt like it was steamed or slowly sauteed. The noodles were soggy and dissolves to the touch vs the authentic high heat way of wok cooking where the smell and flavor would be so sumptous. As far as the place, it is dated but definitely has personality. The host is very very friendly like your favorite bartender. The only issue we had was their drinks. Both our sodas (diet coke and gingerale) had a weird flat taste to it so we asked for water but the water tasted like dishwater. I would definitely come back here again but thats because I'm too lazy to drive to NYC. read more

New owners??? Unreal. We have been coming here and the food was nice, so we put up with the awkward service.... But today was completely unbelievable! We placed a large order and my friend asked for a dish that they made last week when we went. The lady was super rude on the phone and very hard to communicate with. When we got there the order was completely incorrect. Instead of being helpful she tried to argue with us. She got the manager from the kitchen, but then the manager walked away as my friend threw her hands in the air and said forget it. Then they would not remove the unwanted item from our large order. Note that the place always only has one or two customers at lunchtime.... So sad. I think they had a big business years back accordint to my friend. Not so much anymore. I've eaten here about 30 times over the last 12 years, and i've had the same thing every time! The Keang Phed (level 4 heat (B10 on the menu), is the best red curry dish ANYWHERE. Each time I drive the 45 min to go to kwan thai, I promise myself ill order something else, but when i'm sitting there, I just cant. Nearly every employee here is a native Thai. If you ask for "Thai spicy", it will come out blazing hot. For 10 years I have been searching NYC & NJ for a rival for this place and I just gave up trying. I really wanted to like this place. As I love Thai food. I've been to Thailand several times so I'm pretty familiar with the cuisine beard we ordered the Staples which are green curry dishes. In addition we ordered the Thai wings. I ordered one spicy curry and one regular. Chicken curry didn't even taste like Curry , it was soupy watery and tasteless. If you love spicy food, Kwan Thai is for you. If you don't, just ask for your dish to be mild, and Kwan Thai is still for you. I've been going to Kwan Thai for 4 years now, and it is easily my favorite Thai restaurant. The chicken cashew, chicken krapraow (basil leaves and chili), and kaw keang gai (curry, chicken, bamboo shoots, chilis, basil) are my favorites. To top it off, they bring you a free house salad with yummy peanut sauce at lunch. The service is always prompt, attentive, and friendly. I was very disappointed by a recent dinner here. We came here on one of the hottest days of the year, and I'm not sure they had any air conditioning on. If they did, it was very minimal. Instead, there was one small fan in a corner, leading to the restaurant being very hot. I've been in plenty of restaurants and other public places on 100-degree days, and they've all had air conditioning on to create a comfortable atmosphere. The heat in there was awfully strange and very unpleasant. Unfortunately, it wasn't made up for by serving delicious food. The pad thai - the ultimate staple of any Thai menu, was bland and unappealing. It was devoid of much flavor - the typical peanut-based flavor barely came through at all. I've had Thai food at plenty of restaurants throughout the Tri-State area, and I don't think I've ever had Pad Thai (or another dish) as bland as this one. The spring rolls were marginally better, but nothing special - I've certainly had better elsewhere. One other problem caused by the level of heat inside the restaurant: there were flies flying around our table throughout dinner. My wife even had to fish a bug out of her wine (we were too nice to ask for another glass). Completely unacceptable for a restaurant to have a bug problem like that. Stay away. read more

I very much cannot understand how anyone could have a negative word to say about Kwan Thai. If you are looking for excellent, eclectic, & authentic Thai food then you will not be disappointed with Kwan Thai. I have tried other Thai places in the area and have yet to find even one that holds a candle to this place. The food is outstanding! I like to try a different dish every time I go. But here are a few suggestions: The Masaman is off the hook! Kow Soy which is usually on their specials menu is incredible! The Tom Kha Gai soup is so amazing that I would eat it on the hottest day just because I cannot wait to have it until it gets chilly out! Pad Phed... awesome! There are so many more... you will see! Some people like generic Thai food and that is okay for them. But if you are looking for the real deal of Thai cuisine... then you come here! It is a family run establishment and is very charming inside with wonderful decor. The owners and the staff are wonderful and welcoming and I love going there and bringing others to experience it. Every single person that I have brought to Kwan Thai ends up wanting to go back again and again. I give this place 5 stars and I promise you will not be disappointed when you are there!
