Finally. After moving the area two years ago, we found an authentic Thai restaurant that's not only a substitute for Thai town in Hollywood, but better. Kwan's Pad Thai - Super fire. The crispy pork belly is a nice contrast to the sweet spiciness of the noodles. Was that Chicken Wing Zaap - Amazing. The chicken wings were freshly fried to perfection and topped with this orange crispy, tangy tangy, spicy powdery mix mix that a sort of like a Thai Flamin Hot flavor. Pad See Ew - Well executed. This place is fairly new and I had the chance to pick up food twice. It has always been a pleasure coming in. The place is very such a cute spot to have lunch or dinner at and the staff are over so welcoming. They do have their own little parking area in the plaza so that is a plus. There is also street parking as well if you find yourself in a pickle trying to find parking in their lot. I've ordered the Kwan Pad Thai and the normal Pad Thai both of which are delicious. I think the only difference between the two is the pork in the Kwan Pad Thai. It reminds me of chicarrones chips. Either way, both are delicious. A beautiful crunch pillow around each one. If there were 20 wings I would've mowed each one down. Beef Fried Rice was flavorful with fluffy rice. Only slight negative was beef was a little chewy but the flavors were there. Pork Pad See Ew was sauced with tender noodles. Pork cooked perfectly with basil and chinese broccoli. Added a little of my own chili oil to the top to add more spice. Spice levels are definitely muted but I blame that on local neighborhood. Will def come back to try more again! read more

Kwan Kitchen's opening menu featured a small set of items, perfect for people who are overwhelmed with options (yes, I am one of these people :( ). A few glances around the restaurant, and I almost wished that i ordered the papaya salad since it looked delicious! Our party settled on Kwan's Pad Thai, Massaman curry, and Krapow. The Krapow was quite salty, not helped by the side spicy soy sauce, either. To admit, though, the spicy sauce provided was delicious, and I almost wished that this sauce was provided with unmarinated beef. The Pad Thai akin to their Krapow was strong in flavor. It was quite sour and sweet and would have benefited from dialing it back a bit. Their crispy pork, though deserves some recognition, as that is some of the best crispy pork that I've ever had. I barely recalled any great, and it had the same great crunch as would be expected. Both times, I their strong flavors led me to drink water like no tomorrow, and getting refills was a chore. Massaman Curry is one of my favorite foods, and I was sad that it came out way too sweet, though at this point was not surprised. I wanted to finish dinner full, and ordered a second bowl of rice. Quite admittedly, even ordering a bowl of rice took some time. I would be interested in returning in the future for Kwan's Pad Thai again and to see if their flavor profiles are more "tamed." After all, that crispy pork is like no other - ooh what an unexpected delight! I hope to see how they improve from their opening menu! read more

I just wanted good Thai food. I googled and saw the almost-perfect (google) rating for this place, so I wanted to try it. I really wanted it to be great, and would have been happy to add my own positive review, but my experience was anything but positive. I called at 8:30 pm - they close at 9. I said I wanted to order for pick-up and they said, FIRMLY, that I would have to get there no later than 8:45 for them to take my order. It almost sounded like they didn't even want to take it, but I assured them I'd be there, and rushed. I was hungry and wanted to be sure to get my food. I arrived in time, only to find that my order was not ready, and then, as I patiently waited, another customer arrived, and placed an order! There was no hesitation with this order, they took it happily, smiling. And it really upset me. I told them I wasn't happy that I had to rush, only to find my food was not ready, and then they took a much later order with pleasure? Why? The only thing I could see was that that person was Asian and I am not. I'm not saying that was the reason, but what else am I to think? I also made a point of asking them whether they had included a straw for me in the bag for the young coconut I ordered. They said they did. Upon arriving home, I found NO straw. As for the food, it was just OK. I've had much tastier Pad Thai all over LA. This is nothing special and I'd actually say it was less than good. Another thing: one of the things I love about Thai food is the little sweet cucumber side dish that comes with it. Theirs had no sweet liquid in it - was just dry and not flavorful as it usually is. Also, I saw reviews saying it had a great atmosphere. I have to laugh at that. It's plain as can be. I decided to call them today, to try to talk to a manager and let them know how disappointing the experience was, hoping they would give me a reason NOT to post a bad review. I sincerely wanted to avoid it. But it just got worse. There was no manager, the person I spoke with hardly spoke English, and rather than giving me a kind apology, basically blew me off, then HUNG UP ON ME. So, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. I'm disgusted by this treatment and underwhelmed by the food, and felt others should know. I write lots of positive reviews, lest you think I'm just one who likes to complain. We came here today for Mother's Day lunch after visiting the Huntington. I saw that they had a great rating and their menu looked intriguing, and I wanted to try the "kra pow", a dish I don't often see on other Thai menus. It was so good! My son has branched out as far as trying new things, he had the "pad kee mao", I had a bite, it also was so good. They gave us a complimentary appetizer, which was so nice, I chose the fried dumplings. Our waitress was very sweet and I really liked the light fixtures and the open, airy feel to their restaurant. As a Thai person, i highly recommend this place. Its so hard to find Kow Man Gai Tod, which is fried Hainan chicken, but this place got it! And its soooo good!! They also got Fried chicken with sticky rice, which i also highly recommend. Went here to try out Thai foods without driving all the way out to Hollywood. The dishes were pretty decent. We had the Basil beef, Crsipy pork belly, pad Thai and shrimp TonbYum soup. The Tom Yum soup was really good. The right amount of spicy, tangy and all other flavors in the soup. They don't skimp on the shrimps either. The only dish was not up to par is the crispy pork belly. Very dry both inside and out. The SS AYCE was a bit salty to our tastes. Only one or two chefs in the kitchen so our dishes come out one at a time. So be prepared to wait a bit if you have a large party. The place has about 8 tables and basic dining area. It was good but a bit on a pricey side. read more

Their pad thai may not be the best pad thai in town, but their crispy pork definitely the best crispy pork in the world! I would order it again just to get the crispy pork alone. The pricing might be a bit more than your usual thai place, but you can feel the premium ingredients. It's also tastes more clean and less oily, and definitely not spicy. At the 'spicy' level, it's not even as spicy as 'medium' level in most thai places. This is a great spot for people who wants to know about thai food, it won't surprise you with spicy level you can't bear. And the crispy pork! Yeah i said it twice. Some crispy pork can be chewy, or crispy on the skin but hard on the meat. This one is both chewy on the skin AND the meat. And it's not oily! (Or maybe less oily, it's fats after all). A truly excellent, brand new Thai restaurant in South Pasadena. It is a very tiny space. They are in a teeny tiny strip mall on South Arroyo on what is becoming a very hot restaurant strip, so they share their parking lot with some other businesses. Still, parking was not a problem. The dining space is very small with mostly tables for 2. Don't go with a big crowd. I'm not sure there was even another four top besides the one in the center we sat at. That being said, on a Thursday night, it was empty. At least for now. Once word gets out how good the food is, that may change. They have been open at least a month if not more and are still in a soft open with a very small menu with limited choices. I asked when they would switch to a larger menu, but they said they didn't know. It looks like just three or four people working the whole restaurant, with real Thai chefs, which is nice to see. The waitress was very friendly, but to be frank didn't speak English particularly well. There were communication problems even in ordering that bordered on sounding like the old Abbot and Costello "Who's On First?" routine. Also, there is no alcohol to be found. Don't know if that will ever change, but I hope it does as I like sake or at least Thai beer with my Thai food. But let's get to the food, which is the most important element. Pretty much everything we had was fantastic. The weakest item was possibly the shrimp stick appetizer. I hoped they would be large shrimp wrapped in wonton skins and fried. Instead, it is ground up shrimp stuffed into a narrow wonton skin and fried. The shrimp was just a tad fishy, but they were still okay. The order of how the dishes came out was the only other problem. One entree came out, then one appetizer, then two more entrees, then the other appetizer. They need to learn how to better expedite their delivery of food - appetizer's first, then entrees. The other appetizer - chicken sate asked to be prepared well done - was excellent. One of the best I've had in Los Angeles. I know this is a standard dish that few places can mess up, but I've found plenty of other places that can. It was very tasty here and nice and charred the way we like it. The three entrees were ground pork krapow, a chicken panang curry, and a yellow chicken curry. The chicken curry was very good. The ground pork krapow - ordered spicy - was actually pretty spicy. The only complaint is they only offer ground pork or beef or crispy pork - no chicken. I like the spicy basil dish with sliced chicken, so I hope that become an option. I'm not sure why they can't do it now upon request, considering they have sliced chicken for all the other dishes. Still, the flavor was terrific. The best dish of the night was the panang curry. It was amazing. The flavor is just terrific and there was plenty of chicken in the dish. I can't recommend this dish highly enough. That's about it. The food is excellent. I can't wait to see an expanded menu. I hope they do good business. I hope once people find this place, I can still get in to eat without a long wait. Now go and try it and support this business, so they can thrive. read more
