Very small corner restaurant in Lowell, but they have amazing food. The fried squid was so crispy, yet so juicy. The meekathung is good, but in my opinion, viet Thai's is better in flavor. Some of the best meals I have had always seem to be after a long day of hiking and Heng Lay is no exception. A truly authentic Cambodian dining experience, every dish we got here managed to delight! As a heads up, parking is a bit tight but we came at an off time so we were able to get a spot in the back. Given that we were absolutely starving, we went a little overboard with the ordering but miraculously was able to finish a majority of the dishes. We ordered: Salt and Pepper Calamari: Absolutely delicious and fried to perfection. The calamari was also coated in that classic salt, pepper, and jalapeño combo that is sure to be familiar to many! Phnom Penh Noodle Soup: This is the star dish here, I would liken it a lot to pho but with mostly pork products and al dente egg noodles that soaked the porky broth up! We were picking the whole bowl up by the time we got to the bottom! Beef Loc Lac: Another classic Cambodian dish. The sauce was perfect and I have no idea how they got their morsels of beef to be so tender and moist. This is absolutely addicting when paired with some rice. Pork Intestines with Pickled Veg: Do not let this dish intimidate you! The pork had none of that "intestine-y" flavor and was actually slightly crisp on the outside. The pickled vegetables serves with this dish also helped cut through some of the pork fattiness. Fried Chicken Wings: Yes, yes, these aren't the most authentic choices but these may be some of the crispiest and juicy wings I have ever had. The exterior makes that satisfying crunch when you bite down and you have to watch out for all the hot chicken juice that erupts forward - simply sublime! Sauteed Chinese Broccoli: Of course you have to offset all that meat with some veggies. This is a classic Chinese dish where greens are sauteed with oyster sauce, sesame oil, and healthy amounts of garlic. A safe bet! Let me just also add that the pricing is incredibly reasonable and the staff are quite friendly! I would drive all the way to Lowell JUST to come here! read more

Tiny tiny restaurant with incredible food! This was my first time trying Cambodian food and I would recommend this place to others in a heartbeat. Nothing screams "comfort food" better than their hot bowls of noodle soup. I tried the beef stew noodle ($10.50 for medium, $13 for large). The noodles came with fresh bean sprouts and limes. At first I thought that the cuts of beef looked tough, but once I took a bite I discovered that the beef was so tender it melted on my tongue. The broth wasn't too spicy, but was super flavorful. The portion was satisfying and great for its price. I also tried the special noodle soup ($9 for medium, $11.50 for large). The broth was much lighter than the beef stew, but was flavorful and comforting in its own way. The noodle soup was topped with bits of fried garlic which added a lot of flavor. The server kindly explained how to eat the trey proma ($16) on the Khmer traditional food part of the menu. It came with a bunch of fresh vegetables (cucumber, eggplant, cabbage, Thai chili, steamed broccoli, limes) and a generous bowl of rice. Where did the terrific, yummy Cambodian Heng Lay Restaurant go? Last night my wife Vicki and I visited the restaurant. "Sunny" was there - as always a delight and ever so friendly. We ordered our favorites which arrived just barely warm, lacking in the flavor we had gotten used to over the past 5+ years. The beef skewers were physically hot - that was the only thing that was - there was hardly any spices in the other food we ordered. Prices were, for sure, UP - portion size, DOWN. Surprisingly! We were very disappointed. We'd been coming to this restaurant for a long time and had few really poor experiences. Thursday night was one of those really bad nights. Maybe they have a new chef, maybe their recipes are changed, no clue as to the reasoning. I do hope that Sunny and her "team" of restaurateurs return to their original high quality, tasty, hot (physically beyond barely warm) so we can enjoy it the way we had over those many many years. There many Cambodian restaurants in Lowell but this is my favorite because their price is reasonable and food quality is better. For breakfast they absolutely have the best beef stew noodles and Phnom Penh noodles. For lunch I tend to order either the beef lok lak or bbq chicken with rice. The rice dish portions are large, too! This small restaurant is family run, from cashier, server, to kitchen staff. It's like going home for meals. The soups are excellent and so are the wings (sweet plus heat, crispy, juicy, and piping hot). Only real downside is the tight parking. Heng Lay is a cozy, hole-in-the-wall that dishes up a taste of home. It is the kind of soul-warming experience that envelops you in memories of simpler times, like wandering into grandma's bustling kitchen, enticed by the aromas of a multitude of soups and stews simmering away. We'd wandered in, enticed by the idea of hot soup on a cold day and ended up ordering a feast. Beef Lok Lak (5/5): Don't be fooled. This dish is more humble in appearance than in taste. Each cube of tender beef was perfectly seared and seasoned, leaving you eager for your next bite before you'd even swallowed the first. Because this dish is first stir-fried, then coated in a sweet and savory sauce, the beef's texture is unique and what I like most about it. Fun fact: The stir-fry step--where you shake the wok or pan constantly to give the beef an even sear--is what gives the dish its other name - Shaking Beef (Bo Luc Lac). Stir-fried Chinese Broccoli (5/5): A classic staple on the dinner tables of most East Asian households, Heng Lay serves up their leafy greens with plenty of garlic and oyster sauce. Chicken Wings (5/5): These were a last minute addition as we'd already ordered so much food, but the thought of chicken wings was too tempting to resist. We were so glad we caved in. Their hunky wings were not only crispy but oh so juicy. Best of all, they were coated in the most addictive of fish sauce glazes you'll have the pleasure of tasting. Beware--they do come with a kick! This to me is comfort food at its finest and is one of the most underrated dishes I've had in a while. Phnom Penh Noodle Soup (5/5): I would almost consider Phnom Penh Noodle Soup to be a deeper, bolder cousin of the more commonly found wonton noodle soup. This is my go-to Cambodian restaurant ever! My boyfriend and I make it a point to stop by here whenever we are in North Andover. We only ever order the same two things here - beef stew noodles and the shaken beef! The shaken beef comes with a delicious pork broth soup that is so good. Unfortunately it does not come with the order if you order take out - only dine in I believe. The shaken beef is nice and tender with great flavor. The beef stew noodle soup has a flavor that I never had before and it's quite addicting. It's hard for me to finish a bowl of noodles, but I'm always finishing this one! Excuse me Heng Lay Restaurant, where have you been? I've been trying to find a little restaurant that serves good food, nothing pretentious, just authentic Asian flavors without having to travel to all the way down to Chinatown for it and I think I found it. There's a casual dining room with some Cambodian/Thai decors, not anything fancy, it's just a total gem for inexpensive food. Pork Belly & Chinese Broccoli- My guilty pleasure are the fatty parts of meats. The fattier, the better! They stir-fried that with chinese broccoli and garlic and whoa. I felt I transported back to my childhood taking that first bite. I actually ended up saving half to eat it later because I wanted to savor it. So good! Thai Iced Tea- Cinnamony, creamy, rich with tea fragrant served with ice. Yum. Overall Service: I called to order for pickup initially and asked for pork belly & morning glory and the lady on the phone was very nice. Then I got a call right before I was on my way from I think the cook saying they don't have anymore morning glory, and asked if I wanted it with a different veggie. I just told him I trust his recommendation and the dish turned out fantastic. For him to call and it was ready when I got there, that's great customer service in my book. read more

This was my first time in Lowell and Massachusetts ever so I had to go to their famous Cambodian restaurant. The quality of their food is great and top notch for a small mom and pop shop! I really liked the noodles I got! It was different from California food but just as good! I also ordered egg rolls and it was so delicious and crunchy! I did not expect how perfectly season the egg rolls were. They give you a lot of food and it all came out quickly. I was also impressed at the types of Cambodian food they had. I didn't expect such a big menu or so many different things! I'm from California so I don't know if it's common for restaurants to be that small but I'm surprised that a restaurant that good would be so small. The food was terrific, and the atmosphere was welcoming and festive. We brought a young family friend who spent 2 years in the Peace Corp in Cambodia, in a small village living with a family for the entire two years. She speaks fluent Khmer, and was able to talk with the owner and her entire family in their native language, exchange stories, tell jokes, and look at cellphone pictures of the native land. Our friend absolutely loved the food and said it was the most authentic Cambodian restaurant she has visited since her return. This was our second visit to Heng Lay and we will return soon and often. My cousin and his wife took me here for lunch. They are known for their pho/k'tieu dishes here, from what I'm told, so we came here. This little hole in the wall is not a bad place, with ample parking in the back. The place was a bit cold with no heat on and they had Fox News on the tv, which was a bit weird for me. The menu is extensive offering many authentic items similar to Thai and Vietnamese dishes but with flavors uniquely Cambodian and delightfully different. The chicken and Chinese broccoli I ordered came with white rice and a bowl of complimentary clear broth chicken soup. The Gai lan was cut on a bias and stir fried which is not how it is generally prepared in our local Chinese restaurants, after tasting the difference I would be hard pressed to order it any other way in the future, it is that good! I originally went to The Elephant Walk in Boston to get Cambodian food but that was a disappointment. My cousins, who live in the area, took me to Heng Lay instead. I was not disappointed. It was so good, I went here twice in 24 hours. The food is authentic and served family style. We ordered samlah machou, fried tilapia, chicken wings, and sautéed Chinese broccoli. Everything was as good as the way my mom made it. My aunt complained that the samlah didn't have an herb in it called ma'aum but I didn't notice. My cousins love the green iced tea and iced coffee. We came for breakfast and had Phnom Penh noodles and a Cambodian version on pho. Both were delicious. I highly recommend this place for authentic Cambodian food. Came to this hole-in-the-wall place for breakfast on a weekday morning. Service is friendly & fast. Plenty of indoor seating (no patio seating). What blew me away is that this restaurant basically serves the same food as you'd find in the South of Vietnam - because if you know history, you'd know that Cambodia and South Vietnam were the same country for a significant period of time in the past, so there's a lot of shared culture & cuisine. My family comes from Vietnam so we really appreciate this level of authenticity. *Phnom Penh Noodle Soup: Way better than any "Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang" you'd find at a Vietnamese-American restaurant, which is the exact same dish as this. We ordered both the "egg" and the "big noodle" version (these are listed separately on the menu). The egg noodles are more like wheat noodles, and the big noodles are rice noodles. Broth is light, well balanced, savory, not overly salty and doesn't leave the sticky MSG feeling on your tongue after. We ordered large size, portion was very adequate for the price. Plenty of protein types including shrimp, ground meat, and some offal. *Dry Noodle: This is known as "hu tieu khô" at Vietnamese restaurants, and just like the brothy counterpart here, they make it better here than they do at Vietnamese-American restaurants. They serve a bowl of clear broth on the side. In your noodles there is a gravy sauce that is absolutely delectable. Same protein selection as the soup version. *Pork blood rice soup: This is basically "Cháo Lòng", or Vietnamese congee with offal, exact same flavor that we're used to. You can order it with the "giò cháo quẩy" fried crispy dough stick which is how Vietnamese people eat this dish, for a few extra bucks. Heng Lay is an absolutely outstanding, authentic, hole-in-the-wall Cambodian restaurant. Lowell is blessed to have food this good. We decided to have Cambodian food for lunch so we drove up to Lowell, MA to visit Heng Lay, a small but popular Cambodian restaurant in a city known for Cambodian cuisine. We started with the Spicy Chicken Wings. They came to the table with a delicious sweet chili flavor and had a nice crispy texture. For the main course we ordered Phom Penn Noodle Soup. Good sized bowl with tasty pork, shrimp and fish cake... and of course noodles! We also chose the Lok Lac Beef with fried rice. This also came with a small bowl of chicken soup. This Cambodian restaurant is on the corner of a busy intersection where School street meats Liberty street. It is literally 2 minutes from our house and it's our "go to" restaurant for Cambodian cuisine. Most of the younger crowd prefer Simply Khmer or Red Rose but we have been going to Heng Lay for years. Heng Lay hasabout 10 tables including 2 large round ones in the center of the restaurant for large groups. Similar to any other Cambodian restaurant in town, there is a TV that broadcasts Cambodian news or features the latest in Cambodian karaoke music. The family that runs the restaurant are extremely nice and always chatting with us and asking about our latest vacation or playfully gives us a hard time for not seeing us in a while. Once seated, complimentary Jasmine tea is served. We've pretty much eaten everything off the menu. Within our group of friends, we all agree that Heng Lay makes the best Yow Hon Hot Pot sauce among all Cambodian restaurants in Lowell. The broth has the right consistency and is sweet and sour, just the way we like it. It's not uncommon that we would order just the broth to eat the rich Cambodian broth at home. We like to order a side of their fried bean curd (which is not traditionally eaten with it) When I am missing my mom's cooking, I like to get stir fried morning glory with pork belly or "Cha Kroeung Sach Ko" stir fried beef with vegetables in Cambodian curry paste. Yes I know how to make the dishes, but sometimes it's just more convenient to shell out the $8.00 and not have to worry about picking up the ingredients, cooking and cleaning. I was recently introduced to their famous Trey Prama dish by my friends. The traditional way of cooking the dish is to steam the fish with eggs and spices. The fish smell usually gets to me and turns me away from the dish. At Heng Lay, the dish is actually fried to a crisp perfection. It's my new favorite dish! Salty and savory at the same time. The dish is served with an assortment of vegetables: cucumber, steamed broccoli, cabbage, Thai eggplants and jalapenos to balance the saltiness of the dish and aid in digestion. My husband's favorite is "Kuy Tiev Kaw- Ko", a specialty Cambodian/Vietnamese rice noodle dish with a five-spice beef stew broth simmered for hours with beef, brisket, tripe. He also loves their beef loc lac dish with the lime & pepper dipping sauce. You can't go wrong ordering their fresh rolls, fried calamari, spicy wings or mee ka thung, wide rice noodle dish. Just finished eating here with my husband. I had never been to Lowell before but had always wanted to check it out because of the Cambodian population here and restaurants. I'm Cambodian, grew up eating my mom's amazing food, and also been to Cambodia several times so when it comes to khmer food I think I know a thing or two. This place was great! The lady, who I assume owns the place, was very nice to us. It wasn't that busy when we arrived so we were seated immediately, had our order taken, and our food came out fairly quickly. We were in and out in about 45 minutes. As far as the food goes, I was very satisfied. We got Phnom Penh noodles, beef skewers, and papaya salad. My noodles were really good and exactly how I expect Phnom Penh noodles to taste. The beef skewers were very good too. And these things can be hit or miss depending on who makes them. Some people use gross beef and gives it a funky texture but these were better quality and tasted pretty much how my mom makes them and so I was happy. The papaya salad was good too. The portion was huge and hubs asked for it to be extra spicy so when it came out looking really red I was worried but it was just from the tomatoes. It was spicy but not too spicy. Just perfect our taste. It was a bit too heavy on the shrimp paste and I would have liked it to be more sour like how my mom does it but it did come with extra wedges of lime. Lowell at first glance looks like a pretty run down town with not much to offer. I was only here for about an hour and most of it was spent inside the restaurant but after driving around I can't imagine there being much to do. My 4 star rating is a relative rating. The food is good, staff is friendly, and it's cheap and quick. No complaints here. Overall, I would come back to this restaurant if I'm ever in Lowell again. Our total bill was $26. The prices are reasonable and we left very full. I actually wish I had extra stomach space to try more things. read more

Parking is leery. There's a VERY small lot on the right side of the restaurant and a few spots on the left side. Locals seem to park all over... I don't feel comfortable enough doing that! H and I have come here a number of times over the past year. I've tried a slew of items as a single order takeout and also as one of 5+ for hot pot. IMO, this is the best place in town to order mikathang (pad-see-ew or chow fun). The order always seems freshest (and if it's a to-go order, I'm coming from Centralville!) and is NOT soggy like a few other restaurants in the metro area. This does NOT hinder my review in any way, but I will note that it's difficult to understand the person answering the phone (although the woman is easier to understand than the man...) when speaking in English. Hidden gem in a residential area in Lowell. Came here for Mother's day lunch. It has a home-y atmosphere when you walk in. Do not expect a hostess; you pretty much pick and choose your own table. The beef stew was delicious, however they were skimpy on the noodle. Phnom Penh wide noodle was also good. if you dont like liver, you may want to tell your server. Part of the noodle was still frozen so that was a bit annoying. Fresh rolls were freshly made. Thai ice tea was too sweet but jack fruit was perfect. After eating there, I'm surprised by the number of reviews with so many stars. This just seems like an ordinary takeout place. Eccentric, but ordinary. The sauces were all on the side. My friend got pad thai (he has young kids who need to eat something bland) and the peanuts were on the side. That's cool, but the sauce thing is weird. No way of knowing which sauce goes with which food either. I guessed and used a brown and orange sauce on my beef with pickled green mustard. It's really just beef with mustard greens (so much for wondering what pickled green mustard is), and not particularly interesting. The rice was meh. Every dish was meh. It was fresh, but uninspired. I expected some really interesting flavors out of Cambodian cuisine and came away feeling like it's just a variation on Chinese. Maybe we all just ordered the wrong things, or maybe they "knew we were white", but I wasn't feeling the Heng Love. read more

Amazing food! I ordered the Phnom penh and my boyfriend got spicy beef with rice. The service was great and the food was really fresh and amazing! Totally reccomend if you're in Lowell. The place closes at 6PM now fair warning so get there earlier! read more
