We love the creativity of blending and mixing ingredients. And how it plays to the taste of the food. The service was also good. It took some time to get an attendant in the front to assist with getting a seat despite the non busy hours. However, after we sat down, our orders and concerns were addressed immediately. The atmosphere in the dining area was really nice. Immersed with the Japanese vibes and culture. However, when you use the restroom, this is a different topic. I believe the staff made sure that every area was clean before opening. I do suggest that someone would check at least the status. Imagine your customer being delighted with all the food and seeing gruesome in your cubicle would paint a bad experience and all the delicious food and service were tainted. Their seared fatty salmon is where it's at, and it really melts in your mouth (currently offered on their happy hour menu for $8 for 2 pcs). We came for happy hour (Mon-Fri from 3-6pm in the whole restaurant), and the deals are great, especially their drink deals. I usually love Kusshi--especially their Pike & Rose location, where both the food and drinks are always on point--but unfortunately, our visit to the Rockville Town Center spot didn't live up to that standard. Let's start with the positive: the Nutella dessert was really good, and our server was kind and attentive. He even offered us complimentary shots at the end, which we appreciated after a disappointing start to the evening. The issue? The drinks. I ordered a regular dirty martini, but the bartender decided on his own to make it extra dirty without asking. It tasted like the olive juice had gone bad--harsh and completely off. My friends ordered lychee martinis and both said it was the worst they've ever had. So bad that they each took one sip and couldn't finish it. No one checked in or offered to fix them until the very end, which honestly ruined the mood. It's a bummer because we were looking forward to a fun night out. Hopefully, this location is just going through some growing pains and will get up to speed with the Pike & Rose one. I'm for sure a kusshi fan since their original Rockville location in pike and rose. The first time I went to this location, it was during the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight and it was a ton of fun. My total for the bill came out to $61 for 2 rolls and a katsu dinner and when the waiter came out to receive payment I accidentally wrote $70 in the tip line instead of the total line and when I saw the receipt I was shocked. But before I could even say anything the waiter returned to double check if I really meant to leave that amount as a tip. I told him it was a mistake and he corrected it right away. Super helpful service, amazing food, and beautiful restaurant. The only reason why it isnt a 5 star is just because some of the rolls are just way too expensive for what it is. Ambiance was nice and bright, which I preferred a bit more than when Sushi Damo was there and it feels more spacious now even tho the layout is similar. The tables are small with big menus and plates that were flowing off the table and constantly needing reshuffling - probably should've seated us at a table for 4 when not busy just to have some more room. Went for a late Friday night dinner, love that they open late! Service was friendly, but the waitress might be new and seemed nervous. Tried the Chicken Karaage, which was delicious on its own and nicely fried and seasoned, but the garlic aioli was bland and flavorless. Got my go-to Rainbow roll which was fresh and on point. Spider roll was beautifully plated with it, but was rolled really big and falling apart before it could get to my mouth. The Crunchy and Maryland rolls were only average. Everything came out quickly since they weren't busy. I got the Lychee Cosmos and he got Japanese Old Fashions - the first one was good but the second one tasted real different and when asked, the waitress confirmed with the bartender that they had used a different whiskey so they took it off the bill. We also got Tequila shots and at first they said the one we wanted was out, so we settled for another one, but then they found a bottle of the one we originally wanted a minute later. Umm ok. This sushi spot is cute and quaint. We were greeted by the hostess who allowed us to sit where we wanted. Our waitress immediately greeted us with waters which was a nice touch. I hate when I have to ask for water. She gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. We decided on the miso soup, salted edamame, spicy tuna avocado balls, spicy rock shrimp, goyza vegetable dumplings, tempura appetizer, and the seared yellowtail roll. We split a Sapporo. Things that we enjoyed: miso soup (one of the best I've had), goyza vegetables dumplings, tempura appetizer (tempura batter was light and flaky), and salted edamame. The miso soup was sooooo delicious. The chucks of tofu were tender and the broth was so flavorful. The goya dumplings were pan fried to perfection and the sauce really complimented them. The tempura came with two pieces of shrimp, and 5 vegetables. We liked them a lot. Things that we did not care for: spicy tuna avocado balls, spicy rock shrimp, There was entirely too much avocado wrapped around amount of tuna inside of the balls. The ratio was off and since there were no cucumbers in the balls the texture was very mushy. The spicy rock shrimp were cooked very well but the amount of spicy sauce was overpowering the shrimp so much so all you could taste was the heat from the sauce. I would suggest perhaps a drizzle on the shrimp or serving the sauce on the side. Lastly, the seared yellowtail roll left much to be desired. It needed something sort of sauce on it because this roll severely lacked flavor. The service was wonderful and we are open to trying Kusshi again. read more

I arrived a bit early but I was seated right away, so I had time to look around. They gave us a regular full menu, a lunch menu, a specials menu, and a drink menu. So many choices! It was a freezing day so we had hot tea. We ordered the nigiri bento box off the lunch menu, steamed shrimp shumai, and one of their special rolls--Dragon roll. All the items were delicious. I came here based on a recommendation. Kusshi sushi is amazing, located in Pike & Rose. I sat at the sushi bar where you can watch the sushi chefs create their signature sushi rolls. I recommend making a reservation, it can get pretty busy. My favorites are the Got Beef roll make with wagu, the crazy toro made with blue fin tuna and the sushi seared fatty salmon belly. The food is slightly expensive but worth it since the taste of the food is really good such as the steak fried rice which can definitely feed two people. The salmon sushi was very good (one of the best I've ever had). One downside is that the service was a little slow but it's understandable since there was high flow in the restaurant. Decent Japanese place. Came here for Sunday lunch with friends. Would give my particular experience a 3.75 stars.. I grew up in the area but much has changed. The parking situation of Pike & Rose isnt the most fun but apparently the new reality. Luckily, it appears first two hours are free in the garage I ended up in and a reasonable $3 for next 2hrs. This was the lot across Kusshi and Chipotle. Signage and signal were not great but I found the place. We sat outside as it was a nice day. The menu was pretty nice. I was very delighted with their cocktail selection because yuzu drinks are hard to find but they were all over here. I tried the Salaryman and it was delicious. Of note, they provided bottles of water to self-serve table water. For food, we got the nigiri sampler, wings, seared salmon roll, and got beef roll. Nigiri sushi was fine. Nothing super special or bad. Wings were very good. My favorite is salmon and there were not that many options on their specialty rolls. The seared salmon roll was way over cooked to me. For anything aburi, I expect just the top surface to be charred but the sushi on this was pretty much 90% cooked through which made me sad. The got beef was very rich and interesting to try but would not get again. I think it would have been better if the top was raw since the katsu was inside but I could see people probably losing their shit over being served raw beef. All in all, very decent place with good service but absolutely on the expensive side. There appears to be HH options on weekdays which is appealing for a next visit. read more

Had a great dinner Friday night at this latest Kusshi outpost! Has very similar DNA as the other branches (in terms of menu, decor and overall vibe). Space was modern and clean. Service was friendly and attentive. We started off with their seared fatty salmon nigiri. The quality was amazing (perfectly torched on the outside and soft on the inside) in perfect portions. We also shard a nationals roll and tofu Katsu curry. Both dishes were excellent. The sushi roll was well constructed with very fresh ingredients. The katsu curry was generously portioned with a creamy curry sauce (with potatoes, fried tofu and scallions mixed in). Thursday night at around 7 pm. Nice evening and the place wasn't crowded so we opted to eat outside. This is our first time here. We got two appetizers: Shrimp and Tempura Appetizer ($13) and Spicy Tuna Roll ($9). For entrees, we got the Chicken Teriyaki ($19) and Spicy Miso Ramen ($18 plus $1 for the spicy). All of the items were delicious. The 6-piece sushi roll was large and had a good amount of spicy tuna and other ingredients. The Tempura appetizer was well done - several shrimp and vegis (sweet potato, red pepper, poblano pepper - hot!) with a light coating. Tasted fresh, crisp and delicious. The Chicken Teriyaki was a generous portion of well prepared grilled chicken and vegis. The meat was very flavorful and the entree was not overly salty (which sometimes happens with Teriyaki). The Ramen was also very good. The pork was very meaty (not just fat) and the noodles were well cooked, the egg delicious and the broth tasty. I didn't find the broth to be particularly spicy (a disappointment), since I paid a buck extra for spicy and was told by the Staff that it would have a nice kick. The spicy did not have a kick. It does make me wonder if the non-spicy miso broth would be pretty boring. But I digress. I'll give the food a grade of close to 100. Everything was very, very good. The miso wasn't particularly spicy, but it was flavorful. This is not a five star review, though, because of the fact that all the food was brought at the same time. Like - here's your sushi and 1 minute later comes the Shrimp Appetizer along with the two entrees. I mentioned this twice to the Staff. First when everything came and a second time when she came back to check on us. She responded that when they aren't busy, the kitchen sends everything out at once. Excuse me for shouting, but WHAT?? All the food coming at once pretty much ruined what would have been an outstanding meal and experience. I hoped a manager would come over for me to mention this to them, but no one did, although there was one on duty. I'd give the restaurant a 5 star for the food and the server coming back several times to check on us and our water glasses. But the food all coming at once is a big deal. I struggled between a 3 and 4 star rating based on this one thing and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and try again. Ideally I would give a 3.5. I'm giving the 4 but I'm not happy about it. But be warned: you might want to tell your wait staff that you want some time between your appetizer and entree. It's really annoying to feel rushed and to feel as if the restaurant operates for its convenience and not for your dining experience. And it's disappointing not to have had a manager to express my disappointment to. It's a nice restaurant with a good atmosphere, and we spent $60 there. It's a shame I left there so annoyed. I can't be the only person who thinks that restaurants that offer appetizers should space out the meal. read more

So happy Wes opened Kusshi at Rockville Town Square. It recently opened and replaced Sushi Damo, which I did enjoy during its heyday. The interior is bright and modern compared to Sushi Damo. They provided us with seared salmon belly gratis to start. Great way to begin our meal. We were a party of five and decided to get the sushi boat (Kusshi Speed Boat priced at $119) as it was more economical than ordering a la carte. We were with some big sushi eaters-lol. Everything tasted so fresh. I really enjoyed the salmon, yellowtail and tuna sashimi and nigiri. We also ordered the super fatty tuna (Otoro) which is a must get if you like the melt in your mouth tuna. We also enjoyed their cocktails especially the Japanese Old Fashioned. They plan to offer happy hour eventually and hopefully they will accept American Express as they were still working out the issues. We will be back quite often! read more

There are definitely a few kinks to iron out. We ordered gyoza dumplings for an appetizer. We both ordered the lunch specials that come with miso soup. My friend ordered two California rolls and I ordered a California roll, a salmon and avocado roll, and a vegetable tempura roll. My friend's lunch came out first. The appetizer should have been served first. Also, the soup should have been served second. And, lastly, you don't serve one person and not the other in a group of 2 people. Next, came the soup and while it was tasty, it was ice cold. Think of gazpacho, but this was miso soup, and should have been served hot. Then, after this came our gyoza dumplings arrived. My meal had not yet arrived. So, after about 5 more minutes, my meal came out. My friend had been finished eating a while ago and it was an awkward eating experience. The prices for 2 and 3 piece sushi lunch were pretty high. It was $19 for 3 rolls and $14 dollars for 2 rolls. The rolls were good, but nothing outstanding. It was a lovely new restaurant, but the quality of the food does not match the price point. I hope that they are able to iron out some of their problems. read more
