Restaurant has been open for a few months and had a good crowd when we dined on Friday night . Patio was open, all tables were occupied so we sat indoors. Decor was upscale but homey with Japanese themed murals and lanterns. Menu had traditional fare (sushi, ramen, teriyaki) as well as fusion (tuna tacos, pani puri). We ordered tako yaki and truffle salmon appetizers. The former was piping hot with a gooey batter ball and octopus in the middle. Sauce was on pointe. The salmon was buttery wuth truffle oil and shavings. Both were very tasty. For entree I had the chicken katsu curry. The portion was generous, with white rice, steamed broccoli, Japanese pickles, fried chicken cutlet (big) and curry sauce on the side. Curry sauce was savory with a little kick. Chicken was crispy and tender. It came with miso soup. My companion had unagi sushi and the inferno roll (spicy salmon and yellowtail avocado inside, spicy tuna on the outside). All were good. Kind of stuck between 2 and 3 stars with this experience. If I could give it an honest 2.5 I'd do that. We've been wanting to try this place since it opened and finally made the journey here. The outside window bar is a very cool concept but it was incredibly muggy and hot outside so we wanted to sit inside for AC and it felt very muggy inside with the big bar door open. Our table service was sub par. When we asked about allergies in dishes they seemed unsure and after a long pause I had to ask to please check with the kitchen. To clarify, it's fine to be unsure but some reassurance to ask the kitchen would be good after stating a severe allergy. I asked for a club soda. They did not have this so I bought a $5 San Pellegrino which is fine but just something to note. The food we ordered ended up coming out a different dish (totally get that it happens) & when I asked for the dish I had ordered there was just a long pause & a "yup". The server later came back and apologized but it was just a little strange and made me felt bad for asking to get what I had ordered. The sun-dried tomato avocado roll was not what I was expecting and we both didn't like it because there was a lot of the tomato and it tasted very raisin-y but that's no effect on score here just my observation. The sweet potato roll was a pretty purple but really lacked any kind of sauce and I order sweet potato roll at any Japanese place that has it and it was lacking texture & flavor. The yakisoba noodles we had were good. There was an upcharge for asking for tofu as a protein. Again- fine but noting for anyone else interested in that. The bathroom floor was extremely sticky as I walked out my shoes made that loud sticky sound throughout the whole restaurant and there was just a few sheets of toilet paper left. I asked for a menu again (because we weren't really satisfied) & i was willing to try something else. Very quickly the server returned twice asking if I decided yet while I was still reading the menu and I felt rushed so I decided not to get anything else this time and to finish our meal elsewhere. Overall we felt very weird here- it could've been an off day. I know we ordered more veggie sided dishes- and there may be some really good merit on their meat/sushi dishes but this is just the experience I had and I hope it was just a one off! read more

I love all of the Asian inspired drinks and how unique they are! The sushi was very good and tasted fresh. The Ocean Jewel roll was a bit too much with all the raw fish and no rice, but it was unique to try. The crispy sushi rice as an appetizer was amazing! I loved all of the sauce and the crispy toppings going well with the smooth avocado. The toro scallion roll and toro dynasty rolls were my favorite! I have become a regular at Koi Sushi as it is the perfect place to refuel after climbing at Sport Rock. What keeps me coming back weekly is the fantastic service and vegan friendly menu. I have been served by 4 different employees and all have been attentive, kind, and personable. There is one server in particular on Thursday nights that has glasses and a ponytail that makes you feel like you are a guest at her home. She makes adorable jokes and has an infectious laugh. Koi is definitely a good spot to visit solo, with a small group, or with many friends. They have a private table for special large gatherings as well as plenty of tables and chairs at the bar top. I most frequently visit with 2 friends and am thankful they can always split the check for us easily. I have gotten every vegan roll on the menu. My favorite is the avocado peanut roll. I love getting a little more protein in my roll as well as the taste of the lightly roasted peanuts with the smooth and creamy avocado. I commonly get the miso soup as well which I was told is vegan. For only $4 it is a no brainer for some warm and comforting flavor. The cocktails are spectacular! This spot is definitely ideal for instagram worthy content. They have amazing garnishes like jelly fish and printed designs on sugar paper to adorn the specialty cocktails on their menu. I hope Koi has a long future at Rio. We stopped in for an early dinner. The restaurant has an elegant vibe. The staff was friendly and service was prompt. They have happy hour Sunday through Thursday from 3-6 pm. The only thing we didn't like was sitting at the sushi counter. The staff kept reaching over and around us to get the dishes to serve other customers. Koi Sushi opened only about three weeks ago, and after seeing so many great reviews I had to check it out myself. I'm always on the lookout for omakase--there aren't many places that offer it in the immediate area--so whenever I see it on a menu I make a point to try it. Without exaggeration, this was the best omakase I've had in Montgomery County. My personal all-time favorite experience is still my buddy Ricky's Michelin-star omakase on Barracks Row, which is a full multi-course experience. Koi Sushi's omakase is a much smaller nine-piece set, which is why it's only a fraction of the price, but the quality of the sushi itself comes remarkably close. The sushi omakase I had was $75, and the sashimi omakase (which I didn't order) was $85--both extremely reasonable for the quality being served. It also came with a delicious miso soup. The entire experience was outstanding. The wagyu beef, finished with truffle oil, was incredible. The madai was charred perfectly and topped with a beautiful purple salt that elevated the flavor even further. The toro was absolutely out of this world, finished with a delicate gold leaf. The uni was served at the perfect chilled temperature, clearly flown in from Japan, and it was obvious they're sourcing exceptional product--I've had uni at top restaurants in Japan and this was a very similar experience. Every single piece felt thoughtfully composed. The chef clearly knows exactly what topping or finish will enhance each fish without overpowering it. My wife also loved what she ordered. The California hand roll and shrimp tempura hand roll were both excellent, and the purple sweet potato fries with a delicious purple dipping sauce were a fun and surprisingly great addition. The experience was so incredible that at the end of the meal I stood up and gave the sushi chef a fist bump. After that, my wife and I even started applauding the chefs--it was that kind of meal. I ended up asking a few questions and learned that the chef previously made sushi at a five-star hotel in New York, which absolutely shows in the precision and quality of his work. I had a great conversation with the owner, who was very swee and patient, about some of my other favorite omakase spots--like Omakase at Barracks Row. It turns out she knows that same foodie circle as well, including Ricky's wife, who owns Han Spot, China Garden, and Han Place. A couple very minor things they'll likely refine as they settle in: the seaweed on the California hand roll could have been a little crisper, and the timing of the service could be improved, as my wife was mostly finished with her meal before my omakase was served. But they've only been open a few weeks, and I'm confident they'll work out those small details quickly. Even with those minor points, they absolutely still deserve five stars. If they keep up this level of quality and consistency, Montgomery County might finally see its first Michelin star. read more

We came to this newest addition in the Rio cluster. It was perhaps their second week of opening. This is a good Asian option in the Rio lineup of food establishments. The sushi rolls and sashimi were fresh. Cocktails are inventive. We also ordered a ramen which is adequate but not really their specialty I would say. The place is not big and tables are mostly set up for parties of four. Any group bigger than that could be a stretch for the restaurant at least for now. Service is quick and friendly. Decibel level is manageable. I will definitely come back to try other offerings on the menu. read more

We visited Koi Sushi on just their third day in business for a family dinner, and overall it was a lovely start for a brand-new spot with lots of potential. We kicked things off with Japanese Green Tea and Miso Soup -- both comforting and a great way to warm up on a chilly evening. The Avocado Salad (with ginger dressing) was light, fresh, and nicely balanced, with a bright dressing that didn't overpower the greens. For appetizers, the Agedashi Tofu had a delicate crispy exterior and soft center, served in a savory broth that soaked in beautifully. The Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura (appetizer portion) was a highlight -- especially the variety of vegetables, including taro, pumpkin, zucchini, and sweet potato. The batter was light and crisp without feeling greasy. The Sashimi Set (16 pieces) was beautifully presented and tasted fresh. The salmon really stood out -- buttery, clean, and my personal favorite on the plate. For an entrée, we shared the Chicken Teriyaki, which featured tender slices of chicken breast in a sweet and savory glaze, sautéed with green peppers and onions. It came with steamed carrots and broccoli, and a bowl of white rice. There were also several items on the menu we didn't get to this time but are already eyeing for our next visit -- especially the Crispy Salmon Tartare, Takoyaki, Unagi Foie Gras Toast, and the Princess Roll. Overall, a strong start for Koi Sushi -- fresh fish, well-executed classics, and a menu that works well for both sushi lovers and those who prefer cooked dishes. Unfortunately, we came in excited to try a new neighborhood restaurant, but our experience was disappointing. Several members of our party had dietary restrictions, and we were initially told that accommodations could be made. However, after placing our order, we were informed that the restaurant could not accommodate those requests and were told not to ask for them again in the future. The way this was communicated felt dismissive and unwelcoming. As a result, we were unable to dine there and had to leave mid-meal to find another restaurant that could meet our needs. The one bright spot was our waiter, who was exceptionally kind and professional throughout the experience. Unfortunately, it was uncomfortable to witness staff berating and yelling at him in front of guests, which further detracted from the atmosphere. We understand that not every dietary request can be accommodated, but respectful communication and professionalism go a long way. Sadly, this experience left us feeling unwelcome and unlikely to return. read more

Most times you go to a great sushi restaurant and you can tell there's a proper, trained sushi chef at the helm, but Koi did not give that impression. The owner was sooo rude unwarranted and I won't be back. Ordered a cocktail today at the bar and owner or manager Christy or Chrissy was playing bartender today. The real bartender was not there unfortunately who is actually nice compared to the horrific mistreatment I received today. I asked politely for less apple liqueur in a cocktail on their menu I ordered --specifically just a splash (not a pour of the apple liqueur) so the drink can be less sweet. I said all the please and thank you and was very respectful to her and her response was " why don't you come back here and make the drink then??". The owner/manager was very rude and should not be making drinks if she can't handle being asked and educated nicely on the difference between a splash and pour of something bc I politely asked for an alteration to the drink. I'm a mixologist in the industry and knew how I wanted the drink, so i nicely asked for less than the quantity that comes with the drink. I was met with rudeness. I paid and left. I'm sure if I wasn't African American she wouldn't be asking me to make my own drink just bc I asked to customize and go less on the apple liqueur. I'm a paying customer and I got mistreated at this place- I won't be back. Sometimes owners forget that customers are the reason their business stays open and mistreatment is not ok. read more

I popped into this new place not knowing it just opened a few weeks ago and it looks like it's been there - well established. The fresh herbs in their Green Tea and the presentation stood out to me right away. Fragrant and full of flavor. I ordered their Sushi/Sashimi "Lunch Special" for $20 which included two large and generous pieces each of Hamachi, Maguro and Sake. It also included 6 pieces of Nigiri sushi and each piece had a unique topping which added to the flavor profile and the sushi rice was exceptional. Not gummy at all and the fish was the main ingredient. Fresh and yumba! Finally, this special also included 6 pieces of California Roll, I was too full to eat them but they looked fresh and delicious! Highly recommend. Dangerous food and discriminatory service "I had a deeply upsetting experience at Koi Sushi found in MD, Gaithersburg. While eating, I found a sharp, hard plastic object in my food. This is a major safety hazard that could have caused serious injury. When I alerted our waitress, she went to get the manager. I watched the manager come out, ask the waitress which table had the issue, and look directly at us. We were the only people of color in the restaurant at the time. As soon as she saw us, she immediately turned around and walked back inside without saying a word to us. She never came over to apologize, check on my safety, or address the contaminated food. It was clear that our presence was the reason she chose to ignore a legitimate safety concern. To be ignored by management after finding a foreign object in my meal was insulting and unprofessional. I will not be returning and I strongly caution others--especially people of color--about the treatment you may receive here. read more

The service was a bit odd as the dining area is small and the servers came by more often than was necessary. We also ended up a little too close to the next table over which is bound to happen in an area that small.
