Despite fully disclosing his moderate-stage Alzheimer's symptoms, including restlessness and sleep disturbances, we were given notice less than two weeks after moving him in , that we would need to find a different home for him in the next 30 days. We question whether he was given adequate time by Hale Ku'ike Bayside to adjust to his new environment. Please know that Hale Kūʻike is selective in the Alzheimer's behaviors it's willing to handle. The unexpected discharge, and having to move our Dad a second time, was an emotional challenge for our family.

Thankful for the Villas, a rehabilitation center and part of the St.Francis system. Still unable to live independently, patient chose to move over to the adult assisted living center on the same property. From the Villas it was an easy transition to Hale O Meleana by wheelchair through the courtyards. Thankful for the good care person is receiving at Hale O Meleana. Rooms are spacious and individual units with limited kitchen: full size refrigerator, microwave, hotpot... what else does one need? Not much when the delicious meals are provided in the dining room. Coffee and cookies available on self serve basis in the meeting room. Lots of activities for residents. Crafts, games, social events. There is a lovely garden as well as courtyard for those wanting fresh air. Hale O Meleana is a great option for those not ready to transition to long term adult housing which requires down payment (think Craigside, Arcadia, Kahala Nui) but needs temporary assistance. Charges are month to month.

It didn't seem like she knew the name of her facility either. Uhg... My mom only knew "Hale O..." I used Google and "Hale O Meleana" popped up. Mom thought it was near St. Francis Medical Center... which is on Liliha Street. Putting 2 and 2 together, I guessed that mom's friend was at Hale O Meleana (House of Marianne, in English). We used GPS and found the free parking lot on Mahalo Street. We walked to the front door, but the receptionist was gone for the rest of the day (there was a sign that I read through the glass door). My mom phoned her friend and stated that we were locked out. Mom's friend's friend (Sarah) came out and opened the door for us. We found mom's friend in the outdoor dining area... yay! Hale O Meleana appears to be a clean, modern facility. The courtyard is beautiful with a statue of Saint Mother Marianne Cope (of Molokai) and a pleasant water feature! Lunch service was in process, so we did a quick greeting and left. We'll be back to visit!

Besides activities, like current events, sing-along, seating exercise, And special games like balloon volleyball, hangman, Wii golf, and Wii bowling. they also played blackjack and do puzzles. But the best thing about Live Well at Iwilei is hands down the food! do you see this center is run by Kahala Nui. The chef is amazing. The clients dying on some fantastic food. During special holidays like this past Chinese new year, the clients get to partake in the lion dance then eat scrumptious Chinese food like dim sum, fried noodles, pork hash, and rice cake. My single Uncle was happy living in the independent apartment at Kahala Nui. He met and made many good friends there and used the gym/weight room, pool, library, and dining area facilities. Once in awhile we were able to dine in to use his meal credit when I visited him. Great service and wonderful people. As several years has passed, his health was deteriorating and it made it difficult for him to live on his own and was in intermediate to assistant living care. Just recently he was in hospice and hung in for a month. Sad to say he has passed this week. I also had a dear church friend in Hospice on the same floor this year. I'm just impressed by the outstanding service by the Head social worker Jackie and The Assistant Lisa to the Head nurse Chelsea who made my Uncle comfortable and loved while being away from siblings and friends during the Covid Pandemic! They were like family to him to his last remaining days. Thank you for your excellent care and service! I'm sure my Uncle was truly blessed living at Kahala Nui!

This past couple of weeks I have visited them on 4-5 occasions. Each time, I arrived and walked in, right past the reception. Nobody stopped me to ask who I was, nobody addressed me in any way at all, in fact. Each time, there was a person on reception, and twice, there were two people on reception. I just breezed through, and walked all the way into the facility to knock on the door of the couple living there. No security check at all. I could have been anybody, and perhaps a person up to no good. Security cameras may exist, but I didn't see any. This is a major issue--safety and well-being of residents is often quoted as a benefit of living there, and I thought the security was lax. While the Independent Living residents are issued with emergency alerts, there isn't a requirement to actually wear them, and I did not find any emergency alert pulls in the actual apartment. The couple I was visiting, when asked if they are checked-on periodically to see if they're okay--they said no. So, if something goes awry in their personal apartment, and they are not wearing their emergency button; they could be left in a precarious state for who knows how long? Is this enough Care Quality for residents living independently--rather than aging in place at home? I wouldn't have thought so. I am not intimately familiar with this institution, but I really do recommend family ensure they know exactly what the Type of Care is being purchased. My impression from these visits is that there are some significant flaws regarding safety/security.

Stalls are narrow,…read moresubstantially all of the stalls are compact stalls, a lot of drivers park over the line, you have less than a foot to open your car door, and directional signs are too sparse to be useful. When you enter the main parking entrance off the Hospital porte cochere, it says visitor parking is limited to levels 1B, 2B, 3A, and 3B. However, there is no signage indicating what level you are on. So when you drive up to the next level, you find out you are now on level 4A. So you need to turn around and drive down. Even when you walk into the main hospital entrance, there are no directional signs to the office you are looking for. For example, when you enter the main entrance, it has a great directory which has a listing for office 104. After looking for office 104 in the main lobby for 5 minutes and getting frustrated, a cleaner asked me what I was looking for and told me office 104 is outside and 50 feet to the left of the main entrance. The facility itself is in excellent condition. However, the signage needs a complete makeover.

I think it would be very blessed to be able to spend that period in Hawaii, but in the end, I felt that how good home care I could receive from a professional would be the difference between good luck and bad luck at the end of my life. I read the catalog in the lobby, but unfortunately I didn't understand the work of this place well.
