However, there seemed to be issues at night -- responses to the call bell may be as long as a 20 minute wait. One day, she was served a very spicy egg dish for breakfast. She quickly notified the kitchen that she could not eat that because it was too spicy and could she have something else which they agreed to do. At 11:30 she still did not have any substitute breakfast. So she was very disappointed. A substitute meal was never sent and no one ever came to apologize or say what happened.

My brother and I were pleasantly surprised to have each manager share their updates of dad and what their goals are to meet his proposed discharge date. Mahalo to Christina, the nurse manager who confirmed the medications he is receiving and asking us the right questions to ensure we're on the same page. She answered all our questions and reassured us that he is doing well and being pleasant to the nursing staff. Yay! Next up was Amrik the PT and OT manager who shared Dad is 94 but listening to the therapists and trying to do what they ask- he has walked 20 feet with a walker and they are giving cues for him to take bigger steps also helping him with proper way to get up out of a chair, sit down, sit on the potty, get up from potty, and encouraging him to keep trying, which he has been doing, much to our surprise and joy. Then there's dear Maka, manager of activities, she works hard to get to know each patient, what their interests are, hobbies, routine and wants to help them stay as close possible to what they enjoy doing at home. She visits Dad every day and when she heard he liked watching westerns and war movies, she got him his own TV since the double rooms share one TV only. She promised us in this meeting she would do it that day and it was there when my brother visited dad yesterday! At Christmas they received a big donation and she delivered all the gifts to each patient! A big mahalo to Jason, the dietary manager who brought us up to date on dad's eating habits which we had worried about and happy to see he was enjoying the food, his weight and although dad doesn't require a a structured diet, Jason still wants to make sure dad is okay with the food. He said there is an ice machine we can use for his Coca Cola and also a soda machine available in break room if he asks the nurse for one when we're not there. (Jennifer, another nurse, had taken the time to call me to say dad was craving one and didn't have change for the machine, so I was able to bring one for him). Jason explained the dietician will do an assessment of dad but we are happy he is eating the food and getting plenty of liquids. He looks great and his color is so good. Social Worker, Nu Timotea, was facilitating this meeting and did an awesome job explaining the next steps for his proposed discharge date. Helpful suggestions and recommendations gave us the baseline we needed to start the phone calls to begin the selection process of where is the safest and most comfortable for dad. I thanked all of them for making it a pleasant experience for dad and how impressed and touched we are with the care he receives as well as what we observe with the other patients. We are there every day at different times so we've met and seen various staff- everyone is cheerful, helpful, patient, gracious and kind. Even when they're super busy it seems they stop to reassure a patient or communicate what will happen next. It brings tears to my eyes what wonderful people they are to help others in need.

Despite fully disclosing his moderate-stage Alzheimer's symptoms, including restlessness and sleep disturbances, we were given notice less than two weeks after moving him in , that we would need to find a different home for him in the next 30 days. We question whether he was given adequate time by Hale Ku'ike Bayside to adjust to his new environment. Please know that Hale Kūʻike is selective in the Alzheimer's behaviors it's willing to handle. The unexpected discharge, and having to move our Dad a second time, was an emotional challenge for our family.

The workers here are friendly and I see good things happening at the facility- people always offering to help and they have patients up in the chair and present at the activities, even though they might not be able to actively participate. There are lots of open areas for residents to get fresh air and/or eat with their visitors. If you want, they will reserve a table for you on the covered patio too!

The care manager and key personnel are nice, attending staff, therapists are all working so hard but they are so short staffed. Dad had to wait a long time on some days to get the diapers changed. You wonder if the nurse call button is working, but it is. But many patients on the full floor have their buttons pushed waiting for someone to come. That's the reality in all medical facilities nowadays in Hawaii. It is a very stressful time for patients and families, so it's good to try to be understanding and thankful. I really appreciate all the healthcare workers. Visitation policy and security is very good. Parking stalls are narrow so be careful. During the day the structure provides for all the medical appointments in other floor and buildings. Dad has a rare disorder that limits his mobility and speech. He had PT and OT (they're scarce too). He had days of exercises on equipments too. He got help with bed sores. Got airlifted to his bed!

Opened for business in 2006, POB is a 7-story building that is associated with Queen's Medical Center which hosts medical professionals and offers a range of medical services. POB III is located on S Beretania Street and just next door to Board of Water Supply. The building entrance to POB III parking structure is on Lauhala Street. Just like POB I and II parking structures, you grab a ticket as you enter and pay at one of the multiple kiosks on property. I found POB III to be more modern compared to I and II. It also conveniently has a pharmacy and a snack shop on property. Being this was my first visit, I was a little overwhelmed with the foot traffic but many signs are posted to direct you to your destination. I was very pleased and satisfied by the services provided to me from their Imaging unit. It was easily found after following the signage to go down the stairs to the basement. Remember to settle your parking ticket at one of the kiosks located on 1F in POB III. Just scan the barcode and pay via card. Was a little worried coming here for my appointment but glad to report it went smoothly and completed in less than an hour where I didn't incur any parking fees.

Parking entrance is on Lauhala Street and is very easy to navigate though they do have a drop off area as well just before the parking entrance for convenience as well for pick up and drop offs. It's not my first time here but have been here quite awhile back to visit a physician but on this visit was for their Imaging which is one floor down, as I arrived and got situated the staff there are all very nice and professional and validating my ticket is nice as it's all taken care of with out time limitation is nice so that there's no rush as exactly what I did was take a moment to explore the area as mom has a future appointment here as well know that it's very easy and convenient to get your sessions done. The location was convenient. He was here approximately two weeks. The main reason to going to short-term rehab is if they need more physical therapy and occupational therapy to get stronger to be independent. Sometimes they no longer need to be in the hospital, but may be a fall risk so going to short-term rehab is a good idea. Overall, I think he had a good experience. He did receive PT and OT on most days. I believe it's six days a week. First they started him with a walker, then a cane, and then did trial him on no assist device. I also asked them to make sure he could navigate stairs. He told me the food was pretty good. Staff was attentive. Physical therapist and occupational therapist were personable and provided good therapy. Would definitely recommend this place for short-term rehab.
