I first heard about Kahala Nui (KN) before they opened in early-2005. I had a handful of clients who would withdraw large chunks of savings from their accounts for a down payment. I would hear such great stories of a senior community that is being built next to the Star of the Sea School in Kahala. Then, there were more clients who would dip into their savings to outright purchase a unit at KN and some of them would set up their accounts to have an auto draft to pay monthly fees, which would cover whichever meal plan they selected. In February 2005, the initial residents moved into KN and made news in our community. I was invited by clients and many times conducted lunch meetings. When I first stepped into KN, it feels like you're walking into a resort. The grounds are well kept with nice interior décor, where some of them were donated by residents. They have a large dining room where you check in at the hostess stand before being escorted to your table. I was advised a handful of chefs from high end hotels and resorts were scouted by KN to serve food here. After so many lunches and dinners here, I find the food here exceptional. It's definitely not what I had expected for a senior living headquarters. The menu is extensive with daily and monthly specials that offer exotic dishes, such as kangaroo and bone-in cowboy steak. There are celebrities who live here, such as the parents of famous TV personality and celebrity chef Ming Tsai and the mother of Dave's Ice Cream, Mrs. Leong. KN also provides a convenient shuttle service to take their residents to designated shopping areas. They also have in-house social activities and events as well as coordinate group travel off-island. Once upon a time, KN also provided a weekly computer class where my client was so thrilled. He had never used a computer before with his profession and was delighted to educate himself and be active with today's technology. KN also has Hi'olani Assisted Living Center, where residents can receive care, depending on what the resident requires. They are able to receive the necessary medical care in the luxury of their unit. When a resident passes, a large portion of the monies paid for their unit goes back to their beneficiaries and a small percentage goes to KN. Want to live at KN? Be prepared for a long wait if you're on their waiting list. How long do you ask? There have been people who waited several years before they could move in.

I've been to Kahala Nui numerous times to visit family and friends. It is always nice and clean and the staff is friendly. From what the residents say, there are lots of activities and the staff is kind and helpful. I attended their "Summer Sale" last Saturday with a friend. They had a nice complimentary wine, cheese and fruit bar set up outside the sale. The sale was full of things the residents made and lots of wines as well as a raffle for prizes. this was a fundraiser. Very well run and lots of nice offerings. If I had to go to a senior residence, I think I'd pick Kahala Nui!

near by beach (I think thats it) we took a lot of pics on Oahu (Kahala)

This is not a nursing home! This is high end resort living for wealthy seniors. I have a confession to make. We take tours of open houses and look at resort condos that right now we can't afford. Our intentions are good. There is a quote that sums it up from the movie Flash Dance. "when you give up your dream you die! " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0GZAeKVtfg We do not dream of wealth we never did. However sometimes we dream of doing things that you have to have money to do. We have done things you usually have to have money to do for free or discounted prices. My hubby is gifted at that. One of the things we do is look at condos that right now we can't afford but maybe one day who knows. We saw Kahal Nui. The monthly maintenance for a 3 bedroom (again not a nursing home) is $7,481 and that is just the monthly fee. To buy it the price is $1,063,810. This is from their site about the location. "Situated in one of Honolulu's most desirable neighborhoods, Kahala Nui offers residents all of the benefits of a central location that is convenient to Kahala Mall (with more than 90 specialty stores, 28 restaurants and eateries, and an eight-plex movie theater), as well as places of worship and healthcare facilities. Kahala Nui is also in close proximity to the Waialae Country Club, The Kahala Hotel & Resort, and Waialae Beach Park." It's beautiful! maybe one day! I can dream! Here are some of the amenities. Set on beautifully landscaped grounds with water features and open-air garden courtyards, Kahala Nui's gracious atmosphere gives rise to its array of community areas and distinctive amenities. Ask the Community - Kahala Nui

What kind of coffee do they serve? It's the best I've ever had.

It's Douwe Egberts coffee. It is only available to serving instutions such as Kahala Nui, Hale Koa, and other military restaurants. I've seen pods online, but the stuff at KN comes in a dispenser and not as ground coffee.

There is a clear pattern of inconsistency, favoritism, and lack of accountability. Expectations are not applied evenly, and decisions often appear biased rather than based on performance or professionalism. This creates an environment that feels disorganized and, at times, unfair. More importantly, there is a noticeable gap in leadership. Effective supervisors should provide clear communication, support their staff, and handle concerns with professionalism. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience. Questions are often dismissed, feedback is not handled constructively, and there is little effort to ensure a cohesive or respectful workplace. I strongly encourage upper management to take a closer look at how this department is being run. With the right leadership, this could be a much more productive and positive environment--but as it stands, the supervision is a major issue.

My single Uncle was happy living in the independent apartment at Kahala Nui. He met and made many good friends there and used the gym/weight room, pool, library, and dining area facilities. Once in awhile we were able to dine in to use his meal credit when I visited him. Great service and wonderful people. As several years has passed, his health was deteriorating and it made it difficult for him to live on his own and was in intermediate to assistant living care. Just recently he was in hospice and hung in for a month. Sad to say he has passed this week. I also had a dear church friend in Hospice on the same floor this year. I'm just impressed by the outstanding service by the Head social worker Jackie and The Assistant Lisa to the Head nurse Chelsea who made my Uncle comfortable and loved while being away from siblings and friends during the Covid Pandemic! They were like family to him to his last remaining days. Thank you for your excellent care and service! I'm sure my Uncle was truly blessed living at Kahala Nui!
