I love kung fu films and as a soyboy I pretend to like caffeine-free herbal tea since I keep getting ads for it on tiktok so I suppose I must have gone into this with expectations far too high. Though my expectations really only had a minute to ferment since I was supposed to meet the squad at Aqua S a few doors down but they were not open yet since they keep banker+ hours, the people in the squad that identify as ladies needed a restroom, and this bidness was open and with bathroom for paying customer so we went here instead. I went to the back of the line since it was my first time here and it was a big menu, so I did what Chris Porter always complained about people not doing at the Starbucks - hang back a second if you are new rather than clogging up the line trying to figure out what to order. I ruled out most drinks since they either had caffeine, looked like they had caffeine, or looked like they had ingredients I could not have. One gripe is no complete ingredient list on any of these so you do not know what you are getting. As a result of not knowing what you are getting, my mango slush did not even taste like mango. It had the aftertaste of pineapple, which is not mango, so maybe the blender had just been used for pineapple before mine and not cleaned out, or they really should have called this old gal the pineapple-mango or just pineapple drank, since besides the slightest slight orange hue there was nothing remotely mango about this. The person I ordered from at the window was not very friendly. I liked that you picked up at the window so it was not further handled. I liked that the plastic lid was tamped down and sealed, and the straw was individually wrapped. The benches were very uncomfortable to sit upon and the table had a sign on it that it was not to be leaned on or something like that which concerned me a little since it was supporting my drink, how much weight on the table was too much weight? Better not breathe on the old gal then, she might collapse and take my terrible drink with her thanks to gravity and other mysteries. The bathroom code was printed on the receipt to keep out the riff raff. So don't throw the receipt out. The slush was just disappointing tbqh familia. Service was not friendly. Atmosphere/ambiance was lacking and on profoundly uncomfortable seating. And worst of all? No kung fu movie being played anywhere in this joint. They got the tea, but where the kung fu at? There's a reason why Kung Fu is still here after all these years. - Sesame matcha milk with boba (5/5): amazing. Just the perfect balance between matcha and sesame flavor! The drink was super rich and concentrated. You can definitely taste both the matcha and sesame flavors. I added boba which is a nice addition to this drink. Highly highly recommend it! - Grapefruit yogurt (4.5/5): they use actual Yakult in this drink. The drink itself is only 4/5 but they are very consistent in the ratio and the method of making this drink. The grapefruit flavor pairs nicely with the yogurt. Service was phenomenal. I'm not sure why this place had such low reviews, because this place did a great job. The only huge knock is that they use an industrial cleaner that smells kinda strong and it takes a few minutes to go away. They had just cleaned it when our friends came in to visit after having eaten at Tiger Den. I always appreciate places that take the time to clean tables and their establishment even if I hate their strong cleaner smell. They had a wide selection for every type of taste bud and boba tea enthusiast and like other places you are able to customize the ice and sugar content. I found it helpful that they placed a star next to popular items, so you could choose something if you were overwhelmed with the options. I did not have an issue with the boba. In fact, ingredient wise, I found it to be refreshing and high quality. My friends all ordered drastically different items, hot drinks, teas, those things that should just be called ice cream in a drink cup and everyone was happy with their drink. I ordered a honey tea with half the sugar and it tasted sweet, but not elementary level Christmas party cookie sweet. Service was quick. Employees were helpful. This store has been good to me and I think deserves some love :) Their boba is always pretty reliably good. Their drinks also pretty reliably good. I like how they are always coming out with new flavors too that keep you going back. I usually get their honey oolong milk tea, 25% sugar, no ice and it's been a real solid for me. However recently, I discovered their sesame matcha drink and it is so good!!! So creamy and the flavors are all there are so great. It's a little sweeter and more consistent at their Montrose location but very good here, and I come here most nights - so I recommend it highly. The blue hair girl is one of the friendliest employees anywhere. Knew me from the internet, treats me amazingly, and her other regulars too. I'm good friends with the adorable twins (sooo friendly), and 3 guys here that also work at the Montrose location, all wonderful to me every time I come in. They know my order, they ring it up ahead of time. Yes some of the signs are abrasive and aggressive, and I saw the big boss yelling at his employees once or twice which was gross, but he's hardly ever here, and his crew are some of the friendliest, loveliest and most genuine bunch of Bobapeople not just in Texas, but in the country. Picked up some bubble tea on a grocery store run yesterday. Kung Fu Tea is probably one of my favorite bubble tea places because their drinks aren't too sweet (I always lower my sugar to 30%, but for some places, 30% is still too sweet and the other option is 0%). They always have a wide selection of menu items that are all pretty good. I particularly like their matcha strike (the matcha flavor is very authentic and good compare to other matcha milk teas), honey oolong milk tea (the honey flavor really comes through and is a nice addition to the fragrance of the oolong), and red bean wow milk! Would definitely recommend trying any of those out. Additionally, they're constantly adding new things to their menu. I recently saw that they have a new matcha sesame drink that I will definitely try next time! It's not an unusual thought, but when you've visited many variations of the same thing (in this case ... Kung Fu Tea locations) one expects similar experiences. That's how consistency via franchises work, but somehow this Houston version wasn't at all what I was expecting. There is definitely better bubble tea in town. But that doesn't make this place one to skip. One thing they've got going for themselves is the spacious interior. There are plenty of tables and lots of room for big groups to drink, mingle, and even play a board game or two. It is also an ideal place to get some work done on the laptop. The drinks are pretty standard for KFT, but I would always keep an eye out for the specials. Taro milk / slush still has my heart, but I am always looking for something new. Prices are solid as well and they take credit card here. Service could be better. I know they have to deal with crowds often and all but I've experienced a bit of 'tude from the staff more often than I would want. I had never had bubble tea I couldn't finish until I had the sesame slush at Kung Fu Tea. It doesn't taste at all like sesame. Kung Fu used to be known for its boba and I'm not even sure that's special anymore. The service at this location has always been atrocious so that doesn't garner them any more stars. The best sesame shake I've had is actually at Shake Shack (summer special). It almost saddens me that an Asian tea shop got snub-nosed by Shake Shack on sesame. I still don't know what attracted Fox to go to every Kung Fu Tea restaurant on the US map. The staff was very candid with my inquiries. I'm always amazed by huge selection Kung Fu Tea offers. If you can't find what you want on this menu then maybe boba isn't for you. I usually get coffee boba so I tried the Coffee Wow Milk Cap with boba. Their coffee typically isn't too strong but the milk cap made of nice and creamy. My husband ordered the Cocoa Cream Milk Cap, he's a huge fan of milk cap, which tasted very good and chocolatey rich. We also had a small strawberry pastry with tasted very custardy and semi sweet. The service isn't the best compared to other boba places, they always seem kind of rushed. Might be because of the expansive menu. We also aren't fans of how the cups are shaped. It seems there's less volume in these compared to other places but I could be wrong. Inside isn't too fancy but good enough for just getting a few drinks and leaving. read more
