I was in town for a conference, staying right around the Discovery Green, and several people recommended that we try Kulture. Kulture is a black owned restaurant and they own several other restaurant locations in Houston. The service was initially a bit slow and it was unclear who was going to take care of the table. Eventually we were able to place orders for drinks and food. The drinks took about 10 minutes to come out and likely because there was a shortage of staff. Appreciating that the restaurant is in a soft opening, perhaps the shortage of staff was impacted. When the drinks came out, the server dropped all 6 drinks on my friend's back - red wine, dark liquor - and then dropped the glasses that did not break on his back, onto the floor. The server walked away and no staff came to over to acknowledge or apologize. Eventually someone came by to sweep the glass and I asked that the server who dropped 6 drinks on my friend's back come out and apologize. The server came out and we asked for the manager. The manager came over and jokingly said to my friend, "I should have some clothes in your size if you want." My friend made the decision to stay, as we needed to eat and had to also get to an event. The manager gave us rounds of drinks, an appetizer, and desserts. When we finished, the manager insisted that we pay for the food. Given what happened, 6 drinks spilled on my friend, ruined clothes, no apology, no offer to pay for dry cleaning, we did not pay for dinner at all. The manager's approach to handling the situation was disappointing. Separate and aside...The food was great. I had the shrimp and grits and we all shared the pound cake and bread pudding. I would recommend it all. If you go, be careful, as their staff feels new and less experienced. Only go if you have the patience for it taking awhile and if you can't wait a few weeks for them to train and get better with service all around. read more

This is a 4.5 rating. Food was absolutely phenomenal with very little room for feedback. Prices weren't too bad for the quality. Location wasn't terribly far from the Discovery Green area but no immediate parking available. I enjoyed the layout of the restaurant (spacious and not overly busy; minimal). Service was superb - very helpful and friendly - but twice I noticed the host not at the door. The 2nd time she was having a casual conversation with someone and had it not been twice that I noticed I really wouldn't have cared. In the end, highly recommended! This was our first time here and it did not disappoint. My husband and I had pomegranate mules and they were the best. We also had the black eye pea hummus and it was delicious. But the show stealer was the tempura fried okra. I will have dreams about it. My daughter had the meatballs and said they were really good. I had the oxtail entree only got to eat half of it because my daughter made me share with her because it was so good. My husband had the fried fish (red snapper) it was huge. So tasty and the in house made hot sauce was the perfect compliment. For dessert we had the blueberry pound cake and the butter milk pie . Lol yes I know that's not how you spell Culture but it's only right you spell it like that when speaking of this restaurant. Let's start with the cocktail menu . I had the Mahogany 75 I would say it's one of my favorites. My second would have to be Gin & Juice. I'm not a fan of Gin but this drink would give you a change of heart. For appetizers I had the Meatballs and Calas/Collard greens are my favorite. Unfortunately they were having a private event so they had to close the Kitchen by a certain time. I hate to be the lone wolf here, but I was really disappointed. Space is rather small so with our big conference in town, it was crowded. Was told there was 1.5 wait. It was truly 1.5 hours so it was about 8:30 before we got to our table. Waitress was lovely. My BFF ordered shrimp and grits. Waitress came to say they were out of shrimp. My other BFF had ordered a salad with shrimp so the question was, "Are you out of grits or shrimp?" She exits. I guess they found enough shrimp for both dishes. Both found this pretty good. My pan seared chicken was a dry, burnt mess. The sauce had a weird taste. The bread things were weird. I would have returned but was too hungry and it was too late by then. The dish was confusing. My BFFs ordered the pound cake which they described as more like cornbread/shortcake. One returned it after one bite. They are new and have some growing pains. Menu is pretty small. Walked in from my hotel across from the convention center. Served in an instant! I tried the Meatloaf Meatballs and the Collard Green Purses. First off; the Collards are incredible! Got turkey and greens and a marvelous sauce. The Meatballs are delicious, but need to be bigger--that way the awesome flavors can get you. Now I'm working on the Riblets. I've been alive for 36 years and have tried a lot of incredible dishes. The Kulture Club Sandwich is literally one of the best things I have ever had. Everyone needs to know about it, and quickly. It is so freaking good. If everyone in Houston went to go eat one of these things, we would all be walking around with smiles glued to us and the world would be a happier place. The Kulture Club Sandwich is a complete game changer for me- I've had a lot of sandwiches in my life and it's possibly one of the best sandwich I have ever had. I have no doubt it would beat Bobby Flay in a throw-down, easily. The meat on the sandwich was tender, moist and well-seasoned. The avocado and aioli on the sandwich added a unique and tasty touch. The bread on the club is amazing. The texture and flavor are perfect. It was served with homemade chips too! Great portion size and so freaking good. I enjoyed the staff as well. We stopped into Kulture by a chance encounter on our way to the ballpark. WOW, I am glad we did. We were in a hurry so we took a seat at the bar where John waited on us. I went with his suggestions on both food and drink. He started me off with the pomegranate mule which was quite tasty and unfortunately the time allotment only allowed me to have two. John then suggested the fried okra followed by the Oxtail Ragout. I had never had okra fried tempura style. It was different but good all the same. Now, the oxtail ragout. This is off the chart delicious. I can not describe it, just go order it, trust me. Delicious! There was a live Jazz singer, she sounded lovely. I wish I would have had more time to really appreciate the ambiance, the vibe and a few more of those cocktails. Everybody from the hostess to the wait staff was pleasant to deal with. I was here for lunch, so that is what mu review is based on. Unfortunately, I was not able to sample the drinks since i had to head back to work. However, I WlLL be back for dinner and happy hours. The food is fushion : southern comfort food with Carribean and African flavors and spices. Since I don't eat meat and am allergic to shellfish eating out takes some planning and I am used to being very selective on a menu. But generally there are options for me to eat at most restaurants and things I can eat with slight modification ( asking a shrimp topping not ne added or something minor) that allows to me eat. In this case the menu is very meat based and the group I was with wanted to order shared plates. I was super hungry and didn't want to only be able to eat half the apps and also didnt want to limit them. So I ordered the fried fish entree with potato pave and cabbage slaw. OH. MY. GOD. IT was amazing. The fish was fried but did not have a "fried grease" taste. The potatos were so rich and buttery and flavorful. And the slaw was perfectly acidic so that if you ate it between bites it cut through the richness of the food that was coating your mouth and let you tasrlte every single bite. It also was pretty solid on its own having great flavor. While I did not sample the shared plates I was taking notes of what I planned to order when I came back, notably the mac and cheese and the yams and the deviled eggs ( I would ask if the chef was okay not putting the shrimo topping on it if it does not change the dish too much). My dining partners ordered: ox tails, fried okra, mac and cheese, ribs, yams, and deviled eggs. Their end of meal review went something like this: " my favorite was the yams, ooh and the ribs, and the oxtails, and the mac and cheese definitely, i loved that okra....and the deviled eggs too" LOL Suffice it to say they loved their meals and also commented on how full they were. I paid 22 for my entree which is more than I would generally spend for lunch but wouldn't blink at for dinner. The ambiance is great. I can't wait to go back for a happy hour. The chairs had a huge impact on me for some reason! They are big, comfy easy chairs, but they dont give so they are SUPER comfortable and suitable for dining, because you dont shrink below your table to an awkward height because the seat is too soft with too much give. The waitstaff was very hospitable and friendly, made me want to come back. I didn't think our food took a long time to come but apparently the chef did and he sent us over a free fried okra for our wait. That is hospitality. From when we sat down to when I finished my meal it was 45 minutes, which for lunch service I think is reasonable for lunch service. read more

Kulture is a cute, quaint little restaurant smack dab in the middle of downtown. It's brought to you by Marcus Davis, owner of the world famous Breakfast Klub! It is right next to the George R Brown Convention Center. The sign is a little hard to read when trying to locate the place. But, once inside you are greeted by a very sweet hostess and treated to stellar service by the bartenders. I can't speak to the dining service as I was there for a special event. So, we had light appetizers and unlimited drinks. I chose to indulge in the red wine. The bartender recommended a South African Cabernet named, "Arabella". It was DELISH!!! I had several glasses. As far as the appetizers, we were served jerk chicken wings, a collard green dip, cornbread, pickles and riblets. I love collard greens but wasn't a fan of the collard green dip. It was a little too salty for my liking. However, the riblets were off the chain good!!!! Oh my god! I could have eaten the whole pan. Do yourself a solid and try the hottest new South African fusion restaurant to hit Houston. And, if you're a fan of red wine, be sure to ask for the Arabella. read more

There are not a lot of entree menu items: shrimp/grits, ox tails, 3 riblets (yes 3), a WHOLE fish, and a bird (and a few others none of which made me look twice) The fried okra on the apps menu was tasty. I ate the oxtails; I didn't make a happy plate & didn't ask for a to-go box. I think they are tryna be toooo creative and out the box with the menu options...just give it to me simple, delicious, and price conscience. This was the last stop during our trip to Houston and let me tell you, I wish I knew about this place during the beginning of our trip. Not only is the food beyond amazing but the service and the atmosphere was EVERYTHING! Our bartender/server was Jaime who gave us superior service and helped us choose some great selections from the menu. We also had the privilege of meeting the Owner and the GM Anthony, who enlightened us with the history of the restaurant and the reasoning beyond various names of the menu items. I had the pleasure of eating the Kulture Klub which is a must have and the appetizer Calas and Collards Dip which is a unique twist on artichoke dip. Y'all! My sister, niece and I stumbled upon Kulture and it did not disappoint! Whoever thought of the idea to cut the okra like that & fry in tempura batter was genius! It melts in your mouth. It saddens me to write this review because I truly support black business especially up and coming restaurants. I visited this restaurant with a few friends on a Saturday evening and I was beyond disappointed. I did have higher expectations for this restaurant especially because of all the hype around the Breakfast Klub which is owned by the same owners. We arrived and there was a slight wait, which I did not mind( It was a Saturday night), the host showed us to the " waiting lounge". The lounge was very cute and comfy. We saw a table open while waiting and asked the host was it available which she said yes. The host was full of energy, very friendly and inviting. She deserved more than 1 star. My major complaint with this place was the amount of time it took to get our drinks, appetizers, and entree. I waiting over 10 minutes to get the sparking water I order( I actually saw it sitting on the bar and asked another waiter to bring it to me..smh) We waited over 25 minutes from the time we order to get our appetizer ( which was the collard greens purses). When they arrived they were luke warm at best. They were seasoned well,but the lack of "smoked turkey" was a sprinkle at best.( manger comp this dish due to the wait time) We waited 45 minutes for our entree, yes 45 minute. The food was ok at best. I had the small bird dish. I was underwhelm by the pairing of the chicken with what was supposed to be a zucchini salad. It was more like zucchini garnish at best. The menu is supposed to be a soul food menu with a twist. The menu definitely, in my humblest of opinion should be revisited. The pairing of food does not flow at all. Our waiter was not bad, he did apologize for the wait and also stated there were many complaints on the service time by others that night. The most disappointed part of the night was that the manger could see that we were unhappy and he did not come over and talk to the table. We provided feedback to the waiter and he stated the manger should of been at the table, however he never came over. I realize this place is new, but I do hope the service improves . We ordered the macaroni , riblets, greens, shrimp and grits, and the crispy fish plate that gave(we wanted to sample as much as we could). Everything was great. Went to Kulture on Friday for Happy Hour. The ambiance was perfect, great decor and a live jazz band. My girlfriends and I ordered the fried okra with tomato sauce which reminded me of Nigerian okra stew. They also had a modern twist of a Nigerian cuisine called Akara but in pita form which was pretty good. The main entrees were a bit of a let down. I ordered oxtail with grits. Unfortunately the oxtail was pretty bland and I didn't like the grits...it went back. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits which she also stated was bland and had to request salt and pepper. I ended the night with the bread pudding which I thought would have gone really well with vanilla bean ice cream. Unfortunately they don't serve ice cream at the establishment. The bread putting on its own was good but the ice cream would have given it the extra oomph that it needed. I absolutely loved the vibe of the restaurant but I really think the menu should be redone or add some more flavorful items that don't need extra seasoning on the side. I will be back because who doesn't love drinks and a live band on a Friday night. Kulture definitely has potential! read more

Yum yum. What a great restaurant. We are in town at the Quilt Festival and found this on Yelp. I would highly recommend a visit. We shared several of the small plates and were not disappointed in our selections. The fried okra is to die for the light tempera battler and tomato purée were the perfect touch. Mac and cheese although not like grandmas was really good and so cheesy. Collard purses??? Well let me say don't knock em till you've eaten the entire dish. Riblets and meatballs were also excellent. Now to top it all off the Chocolate Praline Pound cake. Makes you wont to hurt somebody. We're from Cali and this is must dine in our book. Here the cake before we destroyed it. Decided to drop in at the last hour before closing, because I don't vibe in big crowds. Everything I order to eat was MOUTHWATERING! The food and drink were so succulent, I forgot to take pictures. My taste buds and stomach devoured the delectable Meatloaf Meatballs, Black Eye Pea Hummus, those ))) YAMS ((( are to die for, the Collard Green Purses and good gosh almighty my drink called Mahogany 75. OMG! On top of the bartender, Alicia and other staff are very well versed in the menu and drinks, as well as the customer service was impeccable. Downside a little bit pricey for the serving size, but hoping the serving size will increase when the official menu is solidified and has its grand debut. I just recently heard of this place. I didn't know what to expect. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Upon entry, the hostess is the most hospitable and sweet spirited lady you'd ever meet. I think her name was Tiffany. She's an older black lady. She was very nice and happy to answer questions. The decor is swanky and urban posh. The ambiance is quite sexy. Lucky for us it was live entertainment that night. The menu is rather eclectic in a sense but has a nice twist on familiar "southern" cuisine. The chef has put an upscale twist on southern cuisine such as "black eye pea" hummus. The drinks are delicious but seemingly pricey! This was our second visit to Kulture. It was so good the first time, we were excited to try new things. The Hoppin John is awesomeness in a bowl! Smokey, hammy, black-eye peas with puffed rice. Shrimp and Grits, very good. The fried chicken was very good also. Equally impressive was the service. We were treated like family. The fried chicken was slightly undercooked, we pointed it out and the waitress apologized and quickly ordered another plate. The manager, assistant manager, as well as a business partner, all came by the table to apologize and share their sincere disappointment that the meal was undercooked. We were completely understanding but they couldn't have been more sorry and quickly rectified the order. We were duly impressed.
