This would be my 3rd time ordering and all I have to say is never again!!!!! The first time I let it slide and didn't order again until 2 yrs later and this last order was 2yrs from my second order. Thought I'd give them a try again but I know better now. I contacted the store to order 1.5 dozen cupcakes for my 6yr old birthday party which the order was very simple. Plain vanilla cupcakes with less vanilla buttercream (cause it's for small kids) piped with a round tip and topped with sprinkles. I thought choosing to opt for a bakery over going to shoprite I would've gotten freshly baked cupcakes but these cupcakes were horribly done with both taste and appearance. Firstly by just looking at the cupcakes the piping were all flattened and didn't even look like it was piped, when I got home, I decided to repackage them into individual cupcakes holders for each kid and when I picked them up they were all cold and hard and they were burnt and dark on the edges and bottom. I didn't think anything of it at that point cause the bakery had it stored in the fridge before I picked it up and I had no order choice but on the day of the party which was next day, I took them out the fridge which I had it for a few hrs and people still said that the cupcakes were cold and hard. For Valentines as well I stopped by the shop and bought cookies and they tasted horrible and stale. My 4 & 5 yr old threw them out. The quality and appearance is a no from me and I know now that I will never be ordering from her again. read more

Memories of my Nonna... Came in last Sunday after 12:00 and the back case was a little barren. Stopped in again this morning before 10:00 and it was a whole different story. This time everything was full, both back and front cases. We were greeted by a little old lady in her house dress. I couldn't help but have a flashback of my own Grandmother. She took our order and handed off to her Granddaughter ( I believe). Bread and rolls were still warm, so that was an easy gimme. Rolls are 25 cents a piece and go rather quickly on the weekend. Italian bread is only $1.00 a loaf are great for Sunday pasta. Things to get... - Butter cookies are $9.50 a lb. -Biscuit cookies are $6.50 a lb. That includes S cookies if anyone remembers them. Great for dipping in your morning coffee. This place is a dying breed for a bakery. Charming little place to check out and those prices are very reasonable. Come early. read more

Been here a couple of times, their butter cookies are really good (jelly's and chocolate dipped). I also had them make a cake for my wife's birthday and we all enjoyed it. Everyone commented how nice it looked and it was just the standard cake. It had macaroons on it, and edible chocolate wave decoration, very well done. The negatives and these are only slight are the parking is kind of crappy you either park up the street next to the dominos or try to get a street spot across the street which is usually taken. Inside is dated and could use renovations, lastly they only take cash. In the end the desserts we've tried all have been great and that's all that matters, definitely would try this hidden gem at least once. read more

If you are ever lucky enough to actually obtain something fresh the quality is excellent. They definitely know how to bake excellent products. The problem is that they routinely sell aged products that are far from fresh, just too many day old, sometimes even still cold and not even fully defrosted, and they do so at full price without telling the customer they are days past their prime. For example, this is not selling cupcakes from yesterday, this is seriously aged products from many days ago. We've been sold stale products just too frequently to repeat. In short, it is not possible to reliably obtain fresh products and it's very embarrassing to bring very stale products to someone's home or serve them to guests. read more

I was on a Cinderella sole seeking journey for a glass slipper of a cruller I had at friends Easter dinner. Afterwards, I asked where the crullers came from. The hosts were not sure but gave me a couple of suggestions to dogbird down. Not knowing exactly where those yellow brick road crullers came from I started an odyssey of Homeric proportions to lay my palate once again on those waking dream epicurean delights. Crispy on the outside, soft as an angel's kiss on the inside. Epi-f'ing-Curean. On this particular Thursday, a couple of weeks ago, at 3 o'clock post meridian eastern daylight savings time I walked into a small bakery with a hand painted tri colored map of Italy on the door. I carefully inspected the display cases and found crust nor crumble of the fabled cruller that had been haunting my taste buds for a fortnight and a half. The woman behind the counter insisting what I was seeking was a zeppole, and they were only available on Sunday mornings. She advised I would need to come early. I explained I knew the difference between a cruller and a zeppole, but she Insisted that was the treasure I sought. They did not make "crullers". She heard the thud of my spirit hitting the floor. She tried her best to assuage my crumpled morale. This was the edge of the map on this quest for me. Nothing but badlands and the unknown laid beyond the doors of this last stop. She told me to call early on Sunday and she would save some zeppoli for me. In an effort to ease the feeling that Oz was nothing more than a feverish dream I had imagined, I lugubriously requested a black and white to help absorb my tears on my journey back to Kansas or exit 117, whichever arrived first. Then, in a moment of divine providence, a single ray of sunshine shone on a lone Boston creme beckoned to my inner child. I took the donut, unwrapped, back to my car. As I bit into the donut the frozen poppy fields thawed instantly. My technicolor Judy Garland moment was thrust upon me with all the glory if a man rescued for the raging sea. As with any worthy sojourn, the darkest hours of dejection gave way to my inner munchkin starting a helium laced song of joy. The cruller quest faded into the glory of the erstwhile denoted technicolor moment. This donut was worthy of a chapter in "Como agua para chocolate". The frosting as alive as the ocean itself with its tips soft and gently floating across the top. The pastry as flaky as The love child of Gary Busey and Axl Rose (no disrespect to the pastry). The creme inside still awash in the afterglow of the love that went into mixing the filling to perfection. Since that moment, I became an apostle of Krystal's. A devoted, driven donut disciple. Making sure all within earshot knew of the joy that laid within travelling distance. If this were the end of the tale it would still be a fulfilling one. That said, it was only the beginning. This morning, at 7:30 Ante Meridian Eastern Daylight Savings Time, I convinced my 10 year old sidekick (one Max S...just max, not Maximus nor Maximilian) to come with me to a land he would not soon forget. I promised delights that would change the way the angels pronounced "Hallelujah". That he would be insisting on recounting (for the most inumerable of times) thismorning. Telling his grandchildren tales of this day, even as they begged him to recite 'Twas the NIght Before Christmas' at midnight on December 25th in 2050. As we entered the bakery, 3 minutes after they opened, the pastry section laid bare before our eyes. In a rare, for me at least, fatalistic moment I feared I arrived too early. The woman behind the counter sensing the tears welling in my eyes assured me more delight was coming out. At that moment, her husband appeared with trays of donuts. Exquisite donuts worthy of compare with the cocoa and pearls Montezuma prepared for the bearded gods he awaited. Not exactly the best metaphor if hindsight is to be considered, but this is a tale of dreams. Of Glory. One that does not end in despair and destruction. One that ends in promise and light. In love. In one simple word, one that ends in carbs. Sometimes carbs, aren't a bad word. OK, I am getting sidetracked. the bottom line is that this place is amazing. Simply A-f'ing-mazing. The story doesn't end there either though. In the corner of one of trays laid the tenderest of feet (metaphorically, of course). Yes, the fabled 'cruller'. I was surprised, and i recounted to the woman my trip for just a few weeks ago. She gently smiled, like i was a crazed person, and softly said "You need to come in tomorrow. We have Zeppolis. Come early. I will put some to the side for you." True Story. Post Script: Not only were there crullers and boston creme (Oh My!) there were also chocolate filled (and like almost chocolate pudding..for realz) and jelly donuts that would make the gods themselves send their minion to Sayreville on a Sunday morning. 9 donuts + 3 Crullers = $11!! read more

This was my first time ordering from Krystal. It is the finest sheet cake I've had in the 22 years I've lived in East Brunswick. A 2 Layer (Vanilla and chocolate) filled with vanilla pudding remains moist 2 days later. The cake had a good flavor, something not always evident. The frosting was delicious. I have frozen some so I look forward to enjoying it again. This will be my go-to bakery. read more

Moved into Sayreville not too long ago and was searching for a good bakery in town for a cake for an occasion and came across Krystal's bakery! Thank god I did! Filled with fresh cookies, bread, and cakes, the people working there were very friendly and took there time with me. They helped me create a beautiful engagement party cake for my sister ! We went with the naked style cake, vanilla with butter cream frosting , one layer filled with cannoli cream and the other a raspberry jam and chocolate mouse , to die for !!! It was a huge hit and it was completely gone by the end of the party. When I went to pick up the cake I decided to get a tray of cookies that were also delicious. One specific one we got was a birthday cake seven layer bite. Amazing !!! I will go there for all occasions and for fresh bread daily!!! What a great find. I recommend it to everyone. read more

Best butter cookies EVER! This bakery is just a pleasure to visit, you feel like family every time you go. My 16 month old son particularly loves the "baby cookies" they make fresh for any visiting children. Krystal's is my family's go to bakery. The cakes are always delicious even if they do have way more icing than I would like. My favorite thing to get here though has to be the cookies. Try a "cigar"!!! Are those even legal? Lol. Seriously though, these mom and pop bakeries seem to be going away and there is no reason for it! Spend some money and some time here.
