June 6 was my birthday, and after celebrating the night before at a lovely restaurant in the city, I found myself with no plans on my actual birthday. I decided I wanted to treat myself to a little cake. I usually visit a local bakery for cakes, mini desserts, and cannolis. It's generally pretty good, although it can be a bit hit or miss depending on what you order. While searching online for bakeries nearby, this place came up with stellar reviews. I was surprised to see it was only about an 11-minute drive from my house, so I decided to make the trip. The bakery was set up much like a classic neighborhood bakery, with beautiful cakes displayed along one side and cases filled with mini desserts, pastries, cookies, and cannolis. While chatting with the staff, I mentioned the bakery I usually go to. That's when they told me that bakery actually gets its cakes from Normandie. I found that fascinating because I had always assumed every bakery made its own cakes from scratch. Suddenly, a lot made sense. I had originally planned on buying a small birthday cake, but since it was only for two people, I decided to put together an assortment of mini desserts instead. I picked up tiramisu, carrot cake, lemon cake, and several other mini cakes. Every single one was outstanding. Not one dessert missed the mark. The carrot cake was moist, the tiramisu was perfectly balanced, and the lemon cake was absolutely delicious. Everything tasted fresh, high-quality, and thoughtfully made. The minis were slightly smaller than the ones I'm used to buying elsewhere, but honestly, they were the perfect size. Now that I know where those cakes are actually coming from, I'll happily make the extra 11-minute drive and buy directly from the source. This will absolutely be my new go-to bakery for birthdays, special occasions, and hostess gifts. A wonderful birthday discovery that turned into finding my new favorite bakery. read more

I was in the area and craving a cup of coffee with a pastry so I decided to give this bakery a try. The coffee was self serve from a machine and there was a mini-fridge with half and half. I got 4 pastries and the 3 I tried were all a little stale. I didn't try the muffin. Staff was efficient and polite. There wasn't much ambience and I don't think they had anyplace to sit. Prices were good. The bakery is located in a strip mall and is easy to access. They have lots of free parking. read more

I used to order from this place until today. I ordered a cake few days ago from Grubhub because I know I wouldn't have time to get one with work etc.for a 5 year old birthday. The delivery time was set for 5:30 pm the birthday starts at 6pm. I received a notification that the order was cancelled. I called the bakery and they told me they cancelled the order the day they received it since they don't make that cake anymore which is completely false and it's all Grubhub. 7 layers Rainbow cookie married the cheesecake and it was delicious! I was recently at a Father's Day event the hostess served this amazing 7 layer Rainbow cookie cheesecake hybrid and it was Devine! I am a cookie fanatic and I really felt like they were 10/10 in the construction of the cake, not overly sweet, and great creamy consistency for the cheesecake. I will certainly hold this dessert experience in my mind for a while and I am thrilled that I could go and order my own for my future gatherings. read more

When we moved here, I passed this little bakery hub 100x but no one ever recommended it. So I tried everywhere else, including private bakers! But Normandie was just so much more convenient, and honestly kids don't care. I am pleased to say that our pre- ordered cake for our 5 year old, was just as good as any bakery we have used at 1/2 the price. Fresh yellow cake with 2 layers of fudge and hot pink icing. I bought the cake toppers on Amazon for the finishing touch! Customer service is lacking (perhaps Covid) I was yelled at by the woman taking my order and over charged for specialty sprinkles that were not included on the cake but was told IF I wanted them they would Have to charge for them, which they did. I ordered a buttercream mocha chocolate fudge chocolate cake and it was so delicious. I literally ate leftover cake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 2 days straight. I normally like to support local, but today wasn't the day. It's the day before Memorial Day, so I expected to have a variety of cakes to choose from. Seven layer cake thats a staple here? Nope. Even the customer in front of us asked for one. No dice. The black & white cake was all alone on a shelf, so I'm guessing it was there a while. I knew with the size of the cakes I'd have to get 3, & at $30 each, not having the one I really wanted was not a good start. Hubby was disappointed, so we left. Stopped at another local bakery & their selection was pretty small & disappointing too. We ended up at Costco. No, not a small business, but huge cakes for half the price of the bakery. Left with 2 cakes & together they weighed almost 8 pounds. Can you imagine? All for $35. And, both were delicious. One was chocolate cake with chocolate mousse & frosted in fudge. It was decorated in red,white & blue too. The other was a cheesecake that was divine. For what we paid, we had plenty of cake for everyone with leftovers. Again, I'd like to support local, but the sizes of their cakes are smaller & $30. I've also come across some stale cakes & pastries from time to time. My husband bought two pounds of assorted cookies at $15, for a total of $30 for my birthday. They were so stale. I cannot even believe that they were being sold in such a rock hard state. Not only that, most were flavorless. The red and green leaf cookies had absolutely no strawberry or pistachio flavor in them. These were worse than a food store batch of cookies. Needless to say, no one including the kids, ate them or would take them home. Had they not been closed for the evening, I would have bought them back. Update: Glad to say that Ralph, the owner reached out and rectified the situation. He even gave is a Hot Chocolate Bomb on the house. I LOVE this Normandie! You can custom order your cake to have it exactly the way you like in terms of the cake layers, frostings, decorations on top, etc. They always do such a cute job decorating. A small round cake is $20 which is awesome for something home made. They are also trans fat free so that's a huge plus. The baker was incredible and willing to work with us. My sister bought these foam flowers and dropped them off at the bakery since the flowers made of fondant were a bit pricey. Normandie Bakery was en route home from some shopping, so I stopped by to see what offerings they had which could serve as a Mother's Day dessert. The smell of buttery richness (always a good sign IMO) was prominent once walking into the clean and really well lit customer area. Showcased in the displays were pretty much every type of bakery goodness you could name: Cakes, Cannolis, Cheesecakes, Cookies, Danish, Donuts, Muffins, and Pies (I'm sure I missed some things). Some of noticeable items I saw were a Rainbow Cake (think a super large Rainbow Cookie), a Derby cake, Brownie Cheesecake, and the item I wound up buying a beautifully robust 7-Layer Chocolate Cake. Having recently enjoyed a slice of 7-Layer Chocolate Cake from Martha's Country Bakery in Astoria, I was hoping it would equal Martha's delicious version. I'm happy to report it was really good. The first thing I noticed was a cake slice (equivalent to what I recently ate) was a heavier. Normandie's version is just physically larger coupled with slightly thicker sponge cake layers, and thicker chocolate frosting layers; all these accounting for the extra heft. Sponge cake was rich with a distinct buttery vanilla flavor. Chocolate frosting was excellent as it was thankfully not overly sweet; a trait which can really imbalance an otherwise delicious cake. My only negative for the cake was the aforementioned size and density of the cake which made eating a slice a bit difficult as each successive bite really weighed me down. This sentiment was also shared by Mom and others in my family that had a slice. I'm sure others may not have the same reaction. Overall really really yummy but be prepared to take a siesta afterwards. read more

My friend purchased a Nutella cake and a Reese's cake here for a party she had and both were delicious! I was very impressed so I had to stop by and pick up some other items to try. I purchased a carrot cake slice which was outrageous and by far the best item of the desserts I purchased. This bakery specializes in the cake department for sure. My next favorite items were the St Joseph cannoli cream filled pastry and the eclair. The rainbow bar with cannoli cream was good, but I had better before. I also purchased a lemon drop cookie which was not good at all and very hard. I'll stick too La Dolce Bakery in Old Bridge for the best lemon drop cookies ever. My friend also had a selection of their jelly cookies at her party which were just ok. In the jelly cookie department I prefer J & M bakery in Middletown. I highly recommend coming to this bakery and buying one of their amazing cakes and especially the carrot cake. Their pastries are really good here as well. In the cookie department I feel that their only ok and the lemon drops not good at all. I'll definitely be coming back to pick up some more cakes and pastries. read more

Just had the most amazing chocolate cake from Normandie Bakery. Everyone was raving about how moist and fresh the cake was. I normally avoid buttercream but had no choice here since I wanted it decorated in fresh flowers and with the hot weather, whipped cream would not hold up. Glad I gave buttercream a chance. I stopped in again this past Friday 3/16/18 to get some St. JOSEPH'S Italian pastries for my 85 year old dad who was spending the weekend with me at my house In Hazlet. I asked the woman behind the counter if they were FRESH, naturally she said yes they were. It was 10 am. I bought 3 with custard and 3 with canoli cream. Needless to say 1 hour later having them with coffee They were not fresh the outer shell was hard and drying out.
