OK.. Whomever is giving this restaurant more than 2 stars must all be non-Asian. Seriously ? I am Thai ..and the food here is horrible! My mother wouldn't even eat here. I came here 3 times already .. Hoping it would get better. A sure sign that this place is horrible: There's now a "Return Refund Policy" on the back of the menu! In a nutshell .. You ain't getting your money back. They can replace the food that you didn't eat.. But if it costs more, you pay the difference .. SERIOUSLY?? The food is overly sweet. Really bad to walk into a restaurant to order take out and be told that it is a 15 minute wait. 15 minutes go by, and the wait increased another 30 minutes. The manager was asking me if I wanted to cancel my order at that point because of the delay. Considering that the restaurant was very empty, I don't get the delay at all. Even with one sushi prep chef there, it should not have been so backed up. And beyond that, the waiting and piss poor customer service gives this place a 1 star - legit. read more

i really really want to love this place and ive tried several times since its opened. its nice to have new places in the neighborhood. i give up after today. i ordered green curry without eggplant....they had nothing to substitute and i was ok with that because it said it also came with squash. when i got it home, there was nothing but some beef and a couple of red peppers floating in it. No other veggies at all. The container was tiny with a slightly larger rice container...im not sure what they expected me to do with the rice because there wasnt enough sauce to cover it....and definitely not enough sauce to add any of my own veggies since they seemed to be missing. Im actually giving 2 stars because the flavor was decent. for the money(more than average thai in the area) - its definitely not worth it...it should have at least come with the listed ingredients. read more

This is an excellent Thai restaurant. The food (curry puffs and thai curry) was excellent, the service was quick & polite, and the overall decor and atmosphere was very authentic. Try the thai sweet tea - it is fantastic here (I had trouble not finishing it as soon as I got it). Definitely worth checking out. read more

After stalking this place nearly every weekend this fall it is finally open! The food was absolutely fabulous and if they consistently deliver at this level Kruba will easily become my favorite Thai place in DC. My husband and I visited Thailand in July and found the food and decor very consistent with what we found in Thailand. They don't go wimpy on spices either. If it says medium spicy expect a little bit of lip burn - exactly how I like it. We started with the perfectly spiced papaya salad and some delicious curry puffs. For our entree we shared the crispy basil duck. This is one of my favorite Thai dishes but a lot of restaurants don't get it right - too oily, fatty, rubbery, not well spiced, etc. These guys knock it out of the park with perfect spice and crispiness. The mango and sticky rice for dessert were just like we had in Thailand as well. The sushi bar and alcohol service opens on 12 Nov, 2012 so there is more to look forward to. Meh. We had pad thai, chicken fried rice (was supposed to be seafood fried rice, but they brought the wrong one), fish, and 2 different kinds of sushi. The sushi was pretty good, the pad thai was okay, but nothing special. I didn't care for the fish and the chicken fried rice wasn't very tasty. Once we told her she brought the wrong rice she did correct it and bring the seafood fried rice. The worst part is the restaurant wasn't busy AT ALL, but the service was so bad. Super slow, not attentive, and no reason for it. I might go back, but probably not. read more

This review is specific only to the sushi; I have yet to try their Thai food and I'm not encouraged to. My wife and I both thought this was the most unremarkable sushi we've ever had. It wasn't that it was bad; it was that there was no flavor or craftsmanship worth noting at all. The service and decor were good in our book, but we regretted going there and spending so much on 'meh' sushi. We ordered the Spicy Tuna, Spicy California, Kruba, and Shrimp Tempura rolls along with edamame and miso soup. This new eatery at Yards Park is beautiful inside and wonderfully quiet. The pineapple fried rice with shrimp is served in half a fresh pineapple, so you can scrape down the sides to get more fruit, if you haven't filled up on the succulent shrimp. We also had the Beef Sizzling, with lots of ginger and onions. Kruba Thai's not as expensive as it would first seem: three of us split herb rolls and two entrees quite happily. read more

I was deeply disappointed by the waitress at Kruba. First indication was when we walked it and only 2 tables were occupied. I said to myself, "Maybe the bulk of their business is in takeout." Little did I know. The waitress was very pushy. She tried to rush us with ordering. I knew since only 3 tables were occupied that the kitchen wouldn't take long on orders. Before the appetizers were delivered to the table she was pushing us to place our entree orders. I even made the point that I did not want entrees with or shortly after appetizers. She laughed when I said this. I said "I'm serious." Sure enough, the entrees came out shortly after the appetizers arrived. Maybe I'm picky but that is a major pet peeve of mine. The most perplexing part of the meal came toward the end when I asked for a refill on my Coke. She informed me that there's a "2 to 3 refill minimum." I shot back, "Where is that written?" As soon as I pushed back she tried to make it sound like she would do me a favor and bend the rules and give me a refill. NO THANKS! This meal isn't for free and I do not need your charity with you fake, made up rules. I will NEVER frequent this restaurant again and strongly encourage you to go ANYWHERE else in DC for food besides Kruba. I did not come to the decision to write this review lightly. I have never written one of these reviews before but the less-than-mediocre service we received really bothered me. read more

My husband and I love to patronize new, local restaurants, but...Positively the single WORST meal I have ever eaten in a restaurant. The trout was old; the waiter rolled his eyes when I asked for something else, the Pad Thai was noodles and noodles and noodles-you had to search for chicken or egg or sprouts. Service was pleasant but horrible-20 minutes from ordering a second beer to actual beer delivery and the restaurant was empty! I echo the review left by W.S. a couple of days ago. I literally got a scoop (small) of rice and 4 shrimp for $15.00. This is unacceptable. Regardless of whether or not this is a "lunch" portion they are extremely stingy and rude. The manager "Ken" was very obnoxious when I shared my dissatisfaction with the meal. I told him I didn't want it and he told me not to come back. I will be contacting the better business bureau within the next couple of days. I ate Kruba before a Nationals game after hearing good things about the restaurant from a colleague. The restaurant itself is spacious and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. It is a short walk from the baseball stadium. I was very surprised that on a beautiful weather Wednesday before a 7:05 PM game the restaurant was practically empty. Our group had some happy hour special drinks and then we moved to a table for dinner. We all shared spring rolls, chicken satay, drunken noodles with chicken, steak sizzling, fried rice and a shrimp and vegetable entree. All the food dishes were very good and no one was disappointed about the food. The service was a little slow which was surprising since it seemed there were only about 10 other customers in the place. I think better exterior signage facing the parking lot across from the restaurant may help boost visibility and attract more customers. We all left a little confused about why so few people were patronizing the place given its location, happy hour specials, food, fair prices and indoor/outdoor seating options. read more

This is the best Thai food I have has in the US since moving to DC 18 months ago. The food was great! Green curry was lovely as were the shrimp cake and satay starters. Ok it was almost empty when we went and so lacking in atmosphere a little but consequently we had no issue at all with service. The only reason to drop a star was on the second visit I ordered a Pad Prig King labelled with 2 chillis and it was so firey I could barely eat it - partly my fault for ordering it but it was the same chilli rating as the green curry which I had managed the time before....so i think some warning for the hot hot dishes from the waitresses would be useful! read more

I take issue with the commentator who says folks giving bad reviews are lying. Although my 4 or 5 visits have not been terrible, everything about the place is inconsistent and I get nervous when I take a guest there (I work in the area). Some of the points the "bad" reviewers make are spot on: the wait staff is difficult to communicate with, try as they might; delivery of food is unpredictable, sometimes "normal", sometimes delayed; food not spectacular as contrasted with similar restaurants in Old Town ALX (where I live); somewhat overpriced, but I really don't care whether something is $13 or $15; drinks are slow to come disincentivizing reorders. On the plus side, some of the dishes I've had are tastey; I too have had the owner come by to ask how things were - and at the time they were fine; it is a welcomed addition to the area - saves having to go to E. Mkt for a "real" restaurant which is too far to walk and too close to drive (but now G&B is open in my buidling). All in all, not my favorite place but certainly not to be avoided at all costs either. read more

The service here is horrible and has been horrible for years. Though people keep lambasting their service, Kruba Thai makes no effort to be better. I've been going here since they first opened, and I have finally decided that I have to spend my dollars elsewhere. If you aren't into top-notch service, then by all means, go here. But I will say, even doing pick up orders here are abysmal. They do not ever, in the 3 plus years I've frequented this place, have enough patrons to justify their extremely slow and disinterested service. Most times when I'm dining in, the waiters are more interested in soccer than serving paying customers. Today was the final straw. I called to pick up an order, I was told to retrieve it in 20 minutes. I came an half hour after my call only to be told that there would be an additional 10 minute wait. In a place that can seat -- maybe -- 80 patrons, they only had 10 in there (which I guess would classify as busy for them) but still, why would you take 40 minutes to make two rolls with not so much as an apology? I left while I'm sure they were just beginning to make my order. Unfortunately, they will still get patrons because that's just how our society works - but truthfully this place doesn't deserve the high price they charge for their dishes - I really suggest you skip it. read more

I really like this place. They have a great lunch special - $12 gets you a small miso soup, spring roll, and an entree of your choice. Just the right portion for lunch and they get it out in a flash (so keeping your lunch hour to an hour or less is no problem). The space is also attractive, and the staff quite friendly. We went to Kruba for the second time tonight. We were very disappointed. After being seated we were not acknowledged for over 10 minutes and had to flag someone down. Even then it took 5 plus more minutes to get a server. We placed our order and asked for our sushi and entrees to come out together (entrees for my husband and son the sushi was my entree). 45 minutes later our sushi came out ALONE. Not once in that 45 minutes did they stop by to check our us or update us on our dinners. They barely refilled our water. I asked for the check when they cleared our dishes. She said ok and went back towards the kitchen. 5 minutes later after passing me at least 5 times I asked for it again and got a look from her like oops. It was busy and that may have been the hold up for the food but an update or management stopping by would have been nice. It did not seem like the servers were short staffed as there were a lot of people in the red shirts and some in all black attending to the tables. The food was good but not spectaular. This restaurant is not up to par with the other Thai places in the area. read more

We were excited to try Kruba after spending our first outing at the Yards wadding pool. It had both sushi and Thai options, which was seemingly great, and the decor was beautiful. But, the Food. Was. Awful! I could have bought better sushi at the supermarket. Even the soy sauce was off - how is that possible? And it was way overpriced - about $2.50 more than most sushi places of "equal" caliber. Our bill was $85 for a dinner that was sub-mall Thai/sushi. Will NOT be going back, and encourage others to steer clear as well. Save your money, don't go here. read more

The Thai dishes are delightfully spicy, uses fresh ingredients, and well portioned. I've been several times and have enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. I am picky about Thai, which tends to be bland & Americanized at almost all Thai places in the DC area; but I have recommended this place to others. I recommend coming during a night that you are not in a hurry; as I have witnessed that the wait for food or your bill once you order has left other customers dissatisfied. However, I have enjoyed a lot of pleasant evenings on their patio that enables me good people watching and delicious dinner. Excellent. Beautiful decor, authentic hand made in Thailand - a touch of class and distinction. They did not go cheap on their restaurant nor are they on the presentation and quality of their food. My wife and I love Thai food and as you know the beauty of Thai is that the dishes are very rich and diverse. Thai food is meant to be different from place to place, and we appreciated the slight differences in Kruba's dishes, they were unique in just the right ways. We shared Tofu Panang. And Kruba Panang is superb, spicy but not too hot, the tofu was crispy and fresh. The Tom Kha Gai soup was rich in flavor from quintessential Thai ingredients. We loved it all, and the service was friendly and they served generous portions of delicious food. We welcome this addition to the neighborhood and wish the owners great success...It's a gem of a place, cozy, warmly lit and beautiful inside. The woodwork is breathtaking. Initially, I was impressed by the environment and staff. However, my final impression was poor. I went here with a friend for dinner and since it was nice outside, we sat on their patio. I ordered my favorite Thai dish and when it was placed on the table, unfortunately there was a large hair across my food. Yes, this can happen anywhere and since it was slightly breezy out, I can see how it might happen. The server had nice long hair and it probably happened when bringing the food out. I called one of the other employees over and she seemed slightly disgusted as well. She said she would bring me another dish. It was 805pm when she took the dish away and my "new, fresh" dish came out at 808pm. At this point, I let it go. When my check came, I guess I expected a discount or some other token of apology, since it is a nice place. Nothing. I glance over as I am preparing to leave, only to see two young female employees looking in my direction and laughing. I am appalled and will never return. These things can occur anywhere, however it should have been handled differently. read more
