We were promptly seated at 6:20 on a Monday evening, no waiting. The restaurant was doing some business but there was no shortage of seating. We picked Kroll's based on a search for quintessential North Dakota foods. We loved that their menu placed small German flags next to the traditional dishes brought by the immigrants when they settled here. I had a bowl of Knoephla soup. A very flavorful dumpling in a slightly creamy chicken stock based soup. It was easily the best of what we ordered. We also ordered a Fleischkuechle. Basically a hamburger patty wrapped in pastry crust, deep fried and served with mashed potatoes and gravy. My father would have loved this meat and potatoes meal. The potatoes and gravy were very tasty, the sandwich a bit on the boring side. I'd go with the one that had sauerkraut and jack cheese if ordering again. Still, no regrets. When on vacation try new and different things! read more

Traditional German food was tasty. Service was great! Price was reasonable. We were in from out of town and the location was easy to find. read more

If you are looking for an old style diner vibe with friendly service, Kroll's Diner in Bismarck is a great option. We arrived around 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday and were greeted and seated in less than two minutes. The table was freshly cleaned and the diner smelled great. Our server took our order promptly and the food came out very fast. I ordered the country fried steak and eggs with toast and hashbrowns. To be honest, the meal was hit and miss. The toast was not really toasted and the hashbrowns lacked that essential crispy texture. I am also fairly certain the country fried steak was frozen rather than made in house. That said, I still managed to clean my entire plate, and was full till dinner. read more

Kroll's is a great local diner! We were looking for something with local food for lunch and someone recommended Kroll's. It was mid-afternoon, so the place was pretty much empty. We were quickly seated in a comfortable booth and promptly served. We asked for recommendations from our waiter and our food came out quickly. My wife had a soup and I had a dish that was essentially a pastry shell with some beef inside and some french fries. All was very good. Prices were very reasonable. Check it out! read more

It was walking distance from my hotel when staying in bismarck. The people seemed very nice and I met the owner which was very nice. A service was quick but the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. Food was good and the prices were good read more

This restaurant is basically diner food served quickly in a not fancy environment. The food is superb simple fare great breakfasts especially their omelettes, any type of sandwich, burger and some German style dishes; I especially love the Cabbage Rolls. It's inexpensive, great servers and open until fairly late. Bismarck is not exactly what I'd consider a " culinary destination ", but I'd come back to this place. What's not to like? Sit down and Eat! read more

So today I pulled into the Krolls diner on airport road. Open sign was on door was open in I went. Standing at the till waiting and this girl comes up to me and says "We're closed!" Oh really? I said then why is ur sign on and I'm in the building standing at the till? I'm sorry we're closed! I said to her I just need a bucket of soup and she says "The cook already put everything away!"So I leave The door says open till 2 pm I look at my phone and it's 2:04 I guess customer service isn't in that business vocabulary especially since I was in the building!!! God help that owner if that is the manager cauz she doesn't have a clue! Better hire smarter staff! Definitely won't be back read more

Heard good things about Kroll's diner from coworkers. The place was very clean and the service was good. Reminded me of the old time small type diner. I ordered the Cajun skillet with over easy eggs. It was good and had some decent flavor. The hash browns need just a little more crisp to them. The pancakes were good and the syrup was flavorful. Overall a decent meal. I would be interested to see what the dinner options were like. Looked to be a few traditional German offerings. read more

Despite being short-staffed, the staff always took care of me and my family and treated us with respect. The food is great, and I love their German-Norwegian blend. The Knoephla soup is amazing. Nice, peaceful ambiance. Great breakfast or dinner spot. read more

they took down the shake machine over forty minutes before close and started taking it down right as we walked in. mind you someone walked out of the store with four shakes right as we were walking in. this pissed me off so hard read more

What was on my plate last night should have never been served as Knoephla kraut and sausage. A couple pieces of sausage with sauerkraut and grease. Zero Knoephla. Bottom of the pan. Must have been sitting in roaster all day then got nuked. They should have said they were out of stock. My soup was cold. Waste of 40.00 for my wife and I. I was too embarassed to take a picture for others to see. read more

Service was good & quick. Restaurant was a little "tired" and could use some cleaning/updating, but was fine. We were on a road trip through ND and weren't familiar with Kroll Diners. We stopped in because I was intrigued by the flieschkuechle - never having heard of it before. I had the sauerkraut version. I think the plain would have been too boring - the sauerkraut was needed. I had it with the knoephela. This was also a first and I thought it was ok. The dumplings were fluffy and it was tasty enough. Very filling - I wish I had only had the soup, TBH. My husband had a burger that looked 'fine'. I wish I had gotten some of the baked goods they were selling, they looked great. read more

This was so quick! They had me at a table right away, and it was busy. They have Pepsi products so a little disappointed but not enough for a star since it's out of their control. Their fleischkuechle was a little different than my childhood, but still good. Topped off with a caramel roll...delicious. If you are German from Russia, definitely have to stop here. read more

Service: Noon on a Sunday, waitress was friendly and attentive, they were busy and we were seated quickly in a booth. Food: Good cheese omelette, BLT sandwich, hashbrowns. However, pancakes were really dense and bland..thumbs down. Prices seemed a little high (3 1/2 stars out of 5). read more

Cute local diner with lots of selection. Definitely get the caramel roll. Staff is super friendly and food comes out fast.

Quaint little restaurant in the middle of several national branded restaurants. Really good Club Sandwich and fries were great, but I ruined them with chili. Happy that we decided to give them a try! read more

Awesome diner. Good food and east main location has awesome wait staff and cooks We eat there every week

I went here specifically for the knoephla and I have to say that I didn't love it. I did really like the strawberry rhubarb kuchen though. So much that I went back and got whole kuchen to go. They didn't have the same flavor, so hopefully I like the others just as well! read more

Kroll's Diner - yellow soup in a bowl - Diners Near Me - Bismarck, North Dakota

Kroll's is a chain of classic diners in the Bismarck area and I stopped into the one that's just off I-94 and the main strip of retail. Early in the morning, there was only one other customer at another table. The waiter was friendly and quite "you betcha" with my breakfast order. Three meat omelet with sliced tomatoes instead of home fries and hold the toast because I'm on a low carb diet. The omelet was cooked super quickly and tasted great. Loaded with ham and bacon and sausage, topped with cheese. A good, solid breakfast. Coffee was strong and good, I had three (three!) cups. [Review 10632 overall, round number 400 of 2019.] read more

I've never been served such watery coffee anywhere! Wow. The eggs were burned, the German breakfast platter was as bland as it could have been. The servers weren't rude but definitely not welcoming. The only positive was the convenience of the location read more

We headed to Krolls Diner in Bismarck for brunch. We planned to get take out and I'm glad we did. Since masks are not required in North Dakota, not a single person in Krolls Diner was wearing one. I was the only one and I stuck out like a sore thumb! Atmosphere: The outside of Krolls diner looks like a stereotypical diner. There is a sign that says: sit down and eat. Krolls Diner is a 50s-style restaurant serving up German and American dish. It's a giant silver building with chrome everywhere. The inside has several booths, tables, and a full length bar. You couldn't get a more picture perfect diner than Krolls Diner. Coffee: I ordered a plain coffee at Krolls Diner and it tasted good. There was nothing unique or unusual about the coffee but it did taste good. Food: Krolls Diner menu is known to be a German and diner focused food. They serve items like kielbasa, and german skillets.  They are known for their knoephla soup or their hand-scooped shakes and malts. I was in the mood for steak and eggs so that is what I ordered. The steak and eggs came steak, eggs (I chose scrambled), hashbrowns, and I chose sourdough bread. I asked for rare steak and my steak was cooked well down. With the plastic utensils, it was comical watching me attempting to eat it. While the steak was disappointing, the hashbrowns were good and I appreciated how much butter was added to the sourdough toast. Service: The waitress at Krolls Diner was friendly and our food was ready when I came to pick it up. Would I Come Back? I liked Krolls Diner and understand different states are following different policies in regards to masks. The food at Krolls Diner was good and the waitress was friendly. read more

Always sorry to report this. This place first is tired and not clean. The server was ok, however. Kroll's advertises as "German" food, which brought me in. Not noticing normal German items on the menu, I inquired. "The _____soup is very good." I'd rate it a 3 of 10. I finally ordered a fried chicken salad. Iceberg, I swear, bagged salad w sparse frilled chicken chunks. I'd never return. read more

Great food, awesome service. Good authentic German cuisine. The restaurant is quaint and comfortable.

Food was hot and tasty, the fleischkuchle was great with gravy and hasbrowns. My wife's skillet was also phenomenal, only issue we had was our eggs being being over medium instead of sunnyside up. Our waitress did immediately get us replacements, however I did not care one bit how the cook was loudly rude to her for asking for such. We would definitely come again for breakfast or lunch. read more

We had went about 20 years ago and it was so good. Had wanted to go back but had been told it was terrible now. Decided on this trip to go back because we wanted German food. Had one of the dishes with sauerkraut. Nothing was fresh or made from scratch. It just tasted terrible and have felt sick since. Plus the server and one of the people in the kitchen looked so dirty. Worst experience I've had in years. The server and person that took our money were friendly. Only positive thing I can say. read more

OK, so I am not from Bismarck so its sort of a fun novelty to hit up this traditional staple to the city. I do enjoy the food, its not food I am used to eating, but I loved it. The soup is great and can buy by the bucket. :-) Part of me wants to give this place 5 stars and other parts 1 star, but I think that is the charm of it. Walk in and its a throw back to diners across the country, not because its retro, but because its never changed or updated. The place was clean, not an issue, but a couple tables were slow to be bussed/cleared. Service for our table was great, as good as it gets. The food is delicious but weighing myself on the scale was not fun the next day as the portions were huge. As a somewhat regular visitor to the area, Krolls will remain on my list for when I am in town, but if I lived in town I think Krolls would be a 1 or 2 time a year place. I think that way it stays special and keeps the waistline under control. :-) read more

I just had lunch at Kroll's Diner on State Street and after so many weeks of isolation, it was a healing breath of fresh air to be seated in comfortable surroundings, enjoying a delicious meal. Life almost felt normal for a minute. Kroll's is really going out of their way to do all the can to keep their staff and customers safe from the virus. They are practicing social distancing, seating people far further than six feet apart (though families and small groups that come in together sit with each other) and the staff can be seen spraying and sanitizing the tables and seating whenever somebody leaves. This restaurant is really being kept clean and as sanitary as is possible. The host Chase was friendly and seemed genuine when he asked how everything was. My waitress Keely was friendly, efficient and best of all cheerful. She really made my day and instilled in me hope for the future, even in the midst of this pandemic crisis. I had Knoephla Soup, homemade and absolutely delicious and the Double Bacon Cheeseburger. It was deluxe, topped with lettuce, tomato and a slice of onion (that I requested) ... the bun was large, fresh and fluffy and the sandwich was substantial and wonderful. Kroll's deserves the five star rating. Great food, comfortable and very clean atmosphere and an awesome staff. It was a wonderful experience. read more

This diner has a very retro "Mom and Pop" feel and the staff is super friendly. Diners seem to be the trend here in North Dakota, and this one doesn't dissapoint. Good German food choices. Don't miss the specials on the whiteboard. Soups are great and generous portions. Friendly staff.

The quintessential home-grown, German-style diner. You can get breakfast all day with multi-egg omelettes, patty melts, burgers, and big mugs of coffee. However, the true charm is in their German, stick-to-your-gut favorite, namely, their famous knoephla soup. In a bright yellow broth with hints of cream, chicken stock, and curry powder, cubes of dense chicken dumplings bob about. The sell it as a side dish, but if you love it that much you can literally take home a bucket full. Another one of their German specialties is fleischkuechle. Basically it's a pounded flat hamburger patty, wrapped in dough, then baked to a golden brown delicious exterior. The hamburger is par cooked first, so the inside isn't swimming in grease. Served with mashed potatoes and a dense brown gravy, I promise you will not leave here hungry. read more

Food is tasty - service amazing - buttttt, unfortunately the owner is a CNN anti Trump kinda person. It just felt as though the TV should have just been turned off rather than hearing that nonsense in the background. Boo! What a stressful breakfast that was. read more

Terrible terrible terrible customer service! Ordered food to go. Get home and missing some of it. We called and were asked to bring the order back. No problem with that. My husband gets all the way back with the food and he's treated so poorly we will never be back. We condensed the order to minimize boxes to take back and was told "you're missing boxes". Well it's all there if you'd open them to look. She then TOLD him to "go sit over there" to wait as they prepped the replacement order. Fed up from her attitude, he asked for his money back instead and was given the excuse "well I've been here since 5am". I get you're tired but to be rude and condescending? No thank you! I will begin by saying that I seek out local diners and dives. I am a foody but I also appreciate a good old fashioned greasy spoon. This place was disappointing all the way around. The service was horrible (and myself and a to go customer were the only customers in the building.) And the food was even worse than the service. I ordered steak and eggs. Steak = to tough to eat Hash browns = just a funky taste Pancakes = bottoms were burnt Eggs = OK and reasonably cooked to order I commented to the waitress about the steak and her response was "that's just what you get with that cut (sirloin)".
