The food is superb simple fare great breakfasts especially their omelettes, any type of sandwich, burger and some German style dishes; I especially love the Cabbage Rolls. It's inexpensive, great servers and open until fairly late. Bismarck is not exactly what I'd consider a " culinary destination ", but I'd come back to this place. What's not to like? Kroll's is a great local diner! We were looking for something with local food for lunch and someone recommended Kroll's. It was mid-afternoon, so the place was pretty much empty. We were quickly seated in a comfortable booth and promptly served. We asked for recommendations from our waiter and our food came out quickly. Heard good things about Kroll's diner from coworkers. The place was very clean and the service was good. Reminded me of the old time small type diner. I ordered the Cajun skillet with over easy eggs. It was good and had some decent flavor. The hash browns need just a little more crisp to them. The pancakes were good and the syrup was flavorful. Overall a decent meal. Service was good & quick. Restaurant was a little "tired" and could use some cleaning/updating, but was fine. We were on a road trip through ND and weren't familiar with Kroll Diners. We stopped in because I was intrigued by the flieschkuechle - never having heard of it before. I had the sauerkraut version. I think the plain would have been too boring - the sauerkraut was needed. I had it with the knoephela. This was also a first and I thought it was ok. The dumplings were fluffy and it was tasty enough. Very filling - I wish I had only had the soup, TBH. This was so quick! They had me at a table right away, and it was busy. They have Pepsi products so a little disappointed but not enough for a star since it's out of their control. Their fleischkuechle was a little different than my childhood, but still good. Topped off with a caramel roll...delicious. If you are German from Russia, definitely have to stop here. read more

Kroll's is a chain of classic diners in the Bismarck area and I stopped into the one that's just off I-94 and the main strip of retail. Early in the morning, there was only one other customer at another table. The waiter was friendly and quite "you betcha" with my breakfast order. Three meat omelet with sliced tomatoes instead of home fries and hold the toast because I'm on a low carb diet. The omelet was cooked super quickly and tasted great. We headed to Krolls Diner in Bismarck for brunch. We planned to get take out and I'm glad we did. Since masks are not required in North Dakota, not a single person in Krolls Diner was wearing one. I was the only one and I stuck out like a sore thumb! Atmosphere: The outside of Krolls diner looks like a stereotypical diner. There is a sign that says: sit down and eat. Krolls Diner is a 50s-style restaurant serving up German and American dish. It's a giant silver building with chrome everywhere. The inside has several booths, tables, and a full length bar. You couldn't get a more picture perfect diner than Krolls Diner. Coffee: I ordered a plain coffee at Krolls Diner and it tasted good. There was nothing unique or unusual about the coffee but it did taste good. Food: Krolls Diner menu is known to be a German and diner focused food. They serve items like kielbasa, and german skillets.  They are known for their knoephla soup or their hand-scooped shakes and malts. I was in the mood for steak and eggs so that is what I ordered. The steak and eggs came steak, eggs (I chose scrambled), hashbrowns, and I chose sourdough bread. I asked for rare steak and my steak was cooked well down. With the plastic utensils, it was comical watching me attempting to eat it. While the steak was disappointing, the hashbrowns were good and I appreciated how much butter was added to the sourdough toast. Food was hot and tasty, the fleischkuchle was great with gravy and hasbrowns. My wife's skillet was also phenomenal, only issue we had was our eggs being being over medium instead of sunnyside up. We had went about 20 years ago and it was so good. Had wanted to go back but had been told it was terrible now. Decided on this trip to go back because we wanted German food. Had one of the dishes with sauerkraut. Nothing was fresh or made from scratch. It just tasted terrible and have felt sick since. Plus the server and one of the people in the kitchen looked so dirty. OK, so I am not from Bismarck so its sort of a fun novelty to hit up this traditional staple to the city. I do enjoy the food, its not food I am used to eating, but I loved it. The soup is great and can buy by the bucket. :-) Part of me wants to give this place 5 stars and other parts 1 star, but I think that is the charm of it. Walk in and its a throw back to diners across the country, not because its retro, but because its never changed or updated. The place was clean, not an issue, but a couple tables were slow to be bussed/cleared. Service for our table was great, as good as it gets. The food is delicious but weighing myself on the scale was not fun the next day as the portions were huge. As a somewhat regular visitor to the area, Krolls will remain on my list for when I am in town, but if I lived in town I think Krolls would be a 1 or 2 time a year place. I just had lunch at Kroll's Diner on State Street and after so many weeks of isolation, it was a healing breath of fresh air to be seated in comfortable surroundings, enjoying a delicious meal. Life almost felt normal for a minute. Kroll's is really going out of their way to do all the can to keep their staff and customers safe from the virus. They are practicing social distancing, seating people far further than six feet apart (though families and small groups that come in together sit with each other) and the staff can be seen spraying and sanitizing the tables and seating whenever somebody leaves. This restaurant is really being kept clean and as sanitary as is possible. The host Chase was friendly and seemed genuine when he asked how everything was. My waitress Keely was friendly, efficient and best of all cheerful. She really made my day and instilled in me hope for the future, even in the midst of this pandemic crisis. I had Knoephla Soup, homemade and absolutely delicious and the Double Bacon Cheeseburger. It was deluxe, topped with lettuce, tomato and a slice of onion (that I requested) ... the bun was large, fresh and fluffy and the sandwich was substantial and wonderful. Kroll's deserves the five star rating. Great food, comfortable and very clean atmosphere and an awesome staff. It was a wonderful experience. read more

This diner has a very retro "Mom and Pop" feel and the staff is super friendly. Diners seem to be the trend here in North Dakota, and this one doesn't dissapoint. In a bright yellow broth with hints of cream, chicken stock, and curry powder, cubes of dense chicken dumplings bob about. The sell it as a side dish, but if you love it that much you can literally take home a bucket full. Another one of their German specialties is fleischkuechle. Basically it's a pounded flat hamburger patty, wrapped in dough, then baked to a golden brown delicious exterior. The hamburger is par cooked first, so the inside isn't swimming in grease. My husband gets all the way back with the food and he's treated so poorly we will never be back. We condensed the order to minimize boxes to take back and was told "you're missing boxes". Well it's all there if you'd open them to look. She then TOLD him to "go sit over there" to wait as they prepped the replacement order. I will begin by saying that I seek out local diners and dives. I am a foody but I also appreciate a good old fashioned greasy spoon. This place was disappointing all the way around. The service was horrible (and myself and a to go customer were the only customers in the building.) And the food was even worse than the service. I ordered steak and eggs. Steak = to tough to eat Hash browns = just a funky taste Pancakes = bottoms were burnt Eggs = OK and reasonably cooked to order I commented to the waitress about the steak and her response was "that's just what you get with that cut (sirloin)". Not really impressed at all. Went for breakfast on Thursday morning and walked into the restaurant and they have a please wait to be seated sign at the front, it should read prepare to stand and wait for someone to come out of the back and do their job. I bet we stood there for a good 15 minutes before someone finally seated us, I came pretty close to walking out as that's a good indication of how the service will be. Looking at the menu it's pretty sad and overpriced. When I think of breakfast I usually want something on the lighter side, the menu was just omelets and omelets who really needs a 6 egg omelette? So you can feel like you are in food coma for the rest of the day. I ordered the Clara's plate, toast, 4 strips of over cooked bacon, under seasoned scrambled eggs and some greasy hash browns for $10.00 are you serious? After we placed our order I noticed a little special sign that had some items listed on it and for $5.59 give or take I could have ordered the same thing but smaller portions. I guess they only want you to see the more expensive stuff. The place is dated and the staff is not very friendly, we had to sit and listen to our waitress in the back complain about why she can't wear jeans to work and the side conversation with the cooks. If you are going to charge premium prices for the food you serve it better be a outstanding meal. What I got was overpriced greasy garbage. Driving thru ND to go to TR NP, we stop in Bismarck to check out Capitol and try out a local diner for lunch. We see the menu and decide to try something other than the usual burgers, so we get the various German specialties. Let's just say there's a reason you don't see a lot of German restaurants around. Their special soup - knoephla soup - is like chicken noodle soup without the chicken, flavor, or the noodles. But you do get instead huge chunks of flavorless flour dough!!! The other German dishes are completely unpronounceable because they are 30 character amalgamations of 4-5 words that taste as bland as the aforementioned soup. One was a thin slice of meat heavily battered and then deep-fried. Yes, even state fair grease proprietors would say, "That's too much, dude." Maybe this is as good as it gets in ND. If so, they need to attract some Vietnamese who will open up $6 pho shops. read more

We really enjoyed this old time diner. Service was friendly and fast and answered all of our questions thoroughly. I had the beef Fleischkuechle and Knoephla soup. They have other German items on their menu as well. Very tasty. The soup is a dumpling soup and the Fleischkuechle is a meat pastry pie.
