Everyone loves the Kroger in Carytown....well, it is adjacent to one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in therefore, like any other store in a wealthy area, it is going to be a flagship store. This Kroger is frequented by students and is built in a "transitional" neighborhood. To expect this store to be the shining star in the Richmond Kroger arsenal is reaching in my book. I I go here to get a great deal on flowers as this location marks down still viable and healthy flowers. It is also on my way to and fro and, well, I am not a person who is overly loyal to a particular brand or location. That said, I just think it is ridiculous to expect the same product mix in every Kroger. Product mix is determined by what the customers buy or request. It is unlikely the people that shop here are going to be asking for Pate, it isn't that type of customer base. So, don't be surprised that it isn't as good as Carytown. And lastly, it probably does twice the volume of Carytown so it is less likely to be as clean and well kept. This store is fine for most people. Part of the issue with this Kroger is the comparison that is bound to be made with the Kroger on Cary Street. In essentially every way this Kroger is inferior. I mostly shop for produce with some meat/fish/dairy peppered in. And the selection of all of these in crummier than that of the other Kroger but for same price. I know that Kroger is not the best place in the world to shop for produce anyway, but in comparison to the produce at other stores and even other Krogers, the fruit and veggies here just look sad. The location of this Kroger is actually more convenient for where I live but given the choice I rarely shop here. There is one shining positive that does compel me to come here from time to time which is the Kroger GAS! This place allows me to spend my Kroger fuel points, so I usually fill my tank here when convenient. P.S. If you are interested in hipster people watching this Kroger has one of the highest concentrations of Richmond variety hipsters outside of Lamplighter. Update: Went here for groceries again recently. Still not as bad as the Kroger on Williamsburg Rd or nearly as bad as any Foodlion, but this place is pretty terrible. If you aren't a college student stay far far away from here. It's cluttered, dirty, confusing, and the lines are ALWAYS ten people deep. Good luck trying to just run in, grab a loaf of bread and some Twizzlers, and get out. It'll still take you 20 minutes (I know from experience on a Thursday at around 8pm.) The "Fresh" seafood and meats selection was questionable and the prepared foods didn't appear fresh. The Beer/Wine area sucks (compared to the other Krogers). Take the extra 5 minutes to drive to Carytown... you won't be disappointed. read more

I don't get why this Kroger only has 2/5 stars...I think it deserves all 5 lol. Every time I'm walking around inside, the workers are always friendly, nice, and helpful. During the days where it is packed and some vegetables aren't in the produce section, they'll bring it right out as soon as I ask. That rarely ever does happen though. I really like how everything is very organized here at this Kroger and the produce section is constantly tidy and full. Also, love the sushi tastings because they're so good and the cute asian sushi makers are so nice. Swanky prices, decent selection, big bakery and big ice cream section, lots of frozen dinners, and alcohol. Symptoms of a supermarket next to a College. but if you look hard you can find items on "Manager's special" over 70% off. Overall it's too pricey for a thrifty person but If this place was a little cheaper I'd shop here all the time. As far s the food goes most of the stuff I've bought in this supermarket in general has been tasty and satisfying. The "generic" Kroger brand products in the store are pretty decent quality comparable to name brand stuff vs. other super markets which water down the quality. I particularly like the Kroger yogurts that they sell for. Delicious and nutritious. FOR MEN: To be honest my favorite thing about this place isn't the food at all. Yes, this store could stand a makeover and a good cleaning, but it's within walking distance of VCU so that's a plus for students, especially since the former Ukrops up in this neighborhood closed a couple of years ago. I stop in once a week or so to buy flowers. Unlike other grocery stores, when their flowers are a few days old, they mark them down as "Manager's Specials" and you can pick up a 12-stem bunch for a $1. I love having fresh flowers in the house, and even if they only last three or four days, since I've only spent maybe $3 tops, it's no big deal. Traffic is often a hassle in this area so I usually try to hit mid-morning or early evening when VCU's classes aren't changing. And while I rarely buy wine here, I love the Kroger wine bag they give you for free that holds four bottles. It's like the reusable shopping bags but has compartments for each bottle so they don't clink around. read more

I try not to go to this Kroger unless it is very early in the morning or very late at night. It's always swarming with people and my social anxiety wins every time. I find it to be not as organized as many of the krogers in the area..it kinda reminds me of Walmart *side eye* read more

This Kroger is centrally located to VCU campus, and carries a large variety at reasonable prices. The selection is not as broad as, say the Staples Mill location; but it's in the heart of RVA catering to college students and urbanites. That being said, I feel it exceeds my expectations for a downtown grocery. The location boasts a sizable "natural/organic" section, as well as decently stocked deli and wine sections. read more

I submitted an order for the Kroger located at 10800 Iron Bridge road and it was horrible! Extremely long wait time, unacceptable number of out of stock items, unacceptable substitutions, wrong quantity and I was charged for an item I didn't even receive! And I was still charged the pickup fee! You literally charged me to wait, tell me that you were out of several items, mess up on both quantity of an ordered item and quality of substituted items. I not only had to go to another grocery store and spend additional money but I have to go back to this location to retrieve an item you charged me for and didn't put in the order! read more

This is the closest Kroger to campus, and it's definitely easy to navigate! I had a particularly pleasant experience with a cashier named Shae today! It wasn't too crowded this morning and she was understanding when I had to run back for a missing item on my list. I know that can be annoying so I really appreciated her kindness. She was fun to talk to, and she even signed me up for the Kroger Plus card! Shae's tip was to download the app to make coupons/shopping lists easier once she noticed my 7 different coupon apps. Avoid at all cost. The employees are rude and miserable to be there. You should be miserable to be there too! I love Kroger, but this is one of the most disorganized and uninviting stores I've ever shopped in. For a more soothing experience, try Carytown or Willow Lawn Kroger. They get less student traffic, which means the employees are happier and the store is more put together. Plus the parking lot is the worst. One of the worst supermarkets I have been to. On my last visit there, I was waiting to get some turkey from the deli counter and all the employees were chatting, laughing and eating behind the counter but not helping the customers. Now, I'm all for some laughs but let's get on the ball and help out the customers. I left that line, my basket and respect for the store. The store is usually busy with VCU students (during the semester).Spare yourself some time if you're grocery shopping here. Sometimes, lines can be backed up. Service is usually average. New to Richmond. We tried this store because we were in Lowes across the street. Place was crowded and pretty much everything else bad that is said I other reviews is true. The only thing I will add, as we went by the meat section, there was a cart stacked with hamburger that was sitting out. This is the worst grocery store I have ever been to, the store feels dirty and disorganized, their produce is awful, and they're always out of a lot of stuff. trying to park is literally crazy and the staff is rude. Waited in the self checkout register for five minutes trying to void an item and nobody ever came so I just left. This Kroger is close to VCU's Monroe Park Campus. When I was living on campus, I did my best to avoid this location at all costs. I understand that its the closest Kroger for VCU students and all, but its just overwhelming to go into this Kroger. Its crowded all the time. I feel like I'm always in someone's way when I go here. The environment is not relaxing at all. Compared to other Krogers, this location is dirty. The parking lot is always full. If there's an event that's going on around VCU or Broad Street, some people try to park here to get free parking. On top of that, people who park here don't know how to park in between the two lines. My advice would be to go to the Kroger in Carytown. It much cleaner, bigger, and much less crowded than this Kroger. It may be a bit far from campus, but the drive will be totally worth it. read more

I never understand the hate for this Kroger. It's always well stocked - I rarely fail to find what I need - and it has great selection, from international foods to organic/natural items. The staff is always helpful and friendly and the prepared foods are really good. They can hardly help the insane parking lot (people do drive badly in It) and frankly, if people have a problem with the clientele - I mean, everyone has to shop. Maybe don't be a snob about it? I've ordered special cuts of meat from the meat department several times and have always been happy. I also appreciate the variety in the deli department. My sole suggestion would be to increase the variety of the produce a bit, but they definitely have what I need, no question. read more

I know this company has the resources to invest in making Kroger a great place to shop and to work. Unfortunately, it currently is neither. The store feels cluttered with boxes and such left unattended in the small, crowded aisles. Worse is the customer service, especially at checkout, where the cashier and bagger completely ignore you, act as if you're a giant inconvenience or mumble some curt response to my hello, how's your day. This is unfortunate because we're a community, see each other on a weekly basis and could be a bright spot for each other in an often hectic and challenging world. I like Kroger as a grocery store but I try to avoid this location if possible. The reason is... it just takes too much effort and time to get in and out. It's always busy and they hardly ever have carts available as well. Then once you are done there is ALWAYS someone outside begging for change. It's completely annoying. Each time I go I always get stuck behind the person using EBT and they are always having trouble. The card doesn't work or they are putting stuff back and then saying they want it again. Their transactions always last 10 minuets and they never try to get through the line like everyone else. On my last visit the EBT card machine wasn't working and the customer just stood there with her 2 year old smacking her and screaming in the cart trying to decide if she wanted to buy the food with her own money or come back later. She asked 10 questions and in between each question she just stood there and pondered. Then she finally bought the food and she didn't even try to bag her own groceries while the cashier scanned them like she didn't hold the line up for 15-20 minuets. All the other 2! Lines were jam packed and the self checkouts like looked like the line at kings dominion for the volcano . read more

I hear so many stories about how this place is horrible and this and that. But I've been to this places hundreds of times and I think its fine. They just renovated the whole store, added a sushi bar and expanded the salad bar. I really like this Kroger, it has some of the nicest/ friendliest employees. They are always willing to help me find anything I need. I know there's some sketchy people that walk around but it's not that bad. There is a diverse crowd of people from Richmond that shop there, nothing wrong with that. The prices are great and I always find a deal. One of the worst grocery store experiences. The signs were not updated so the whole time I was running around up and down the aisle looking for cyanide so I could end my miserable life. The aisles were narrow almost like simulating claustrophobia and it was very awkward when another person had to pass by. The place was packed like a saturday morning flea market and they were understaff so there was congestion around the whole store. This place is cursed with bad management and with bums out front to greet you before abandon all hope and enter. read more

This place sucks. Plain and simple. Its dirty and beat up. The employees are a pain in the arse and treat customers like dirt. I do not like Kroger and this place is one of the reasons why. Martins is just better because you still have a little Ukrops feel when you go there, even though its not Ukrops anymore. I visit this location atleast once a week to buy a cart full of gatorades for my sales crew, normally they have a cashier open who handles my load quickly and easily. Today... There were no working cashiers, only thr self service check outs were available with 2 guys monitoring it. I was guided to this area by a employee, so I went with it reluctantly thinking.. Maybe he didnt see hwo many items I have.. But he did and he meant for me to go there. So, as Im attemtping to start, one of the cashiers monitoring the self echeckout comes over and offered to help.. And he did.. We scanned all of my items and had to stop and start repeatedly because of the weight of the gatorades and water I had. He was really nice and kept helping and fixing the machine so we could get it done. (he wasnt too hard on my eyes either, but I could probably have given birth to him so tjhat is a little scary lol) anyhoo... He was great, he offered to help me put it in the car too but i declined, he had already done enough to help.. So, i said all this to say that theygave Martins a run for their money today as far as customer service. read more

The quality of produce and prepared food and actually normal inventory at this Kroger is just not up to par with other Krogers in the area. They never seems to have what I'm looking for and for that reason I'll go do my shopping at the Kroger on Cary even though its out of the way. They also ever seem to have enough people working checkout and produce items never have prices on them. read more

I go to this Kroger quite frequently and today, well I was really PO'd. I don't know what on earth is going on in the Kroger bakeries, but I called 3 damn local Kroger's (Willow Lawn, Mechnicsville, and this one) and HAD TO EXPLAIN TO THEM THEIR OWN PRODUCTS. I was inquiring about the price/ordering of the Fruit Tarts, or which mouth breather who answered the phone, cheese cake fruit tart, fruit tart small/large, or just plain duhhh, and they didn't even know what I was talking about. Now I have seen them sell this item in the bakery LOTS OF FREAKING TIME. If it was a seasonal item I can see, but not to know your own damn product?? JEESH... I really am continually disappointed every time I come in. As a VCU student the location is convenient, but the store is complete trash. There are never baskets or the small carts available. The salad bar, which I frequent a lot, always has a bunch of missing items. Today my salad even had bits of plastic mixed in. When possible I try to drive out to the Willow Lawn or Cary town Kroger, they are so much nicer. read more

If you ignore the few rude employees, and use common sense about the 1st of the month (it will be blown up.), this has plenty of employees who are trying to change the perception of this store, and the remodel and inclusion of a wine steward/hot and cold bar, makes this store much improved from where it has been. read more

This is a weird location, but what I thought was really inefficient is that when I went to the bathroom near the self check out, it was locked. I asked an employee where's the bathroom and he pointed at he same door. The door said unisex so I assumed it was some type of family or small bathroom for single use. When the person came out and I went in, I saw that it was a full bathroom with 2 stalls and a urinal or 2. So to me it doesn't make sense to make a full bathroom like that unisex which means that a single person has to lock themselves into a bathroom designed to accommodate 4 ppl. While I was in there, as I did when I came to it, someone checked the door but it was locked. When I came out, the man that was waiting, went in and locked the doors. I think this system would work if there were multiple bathrooms. Maybe there are but when I asked the employee, he pointed to the one. Either way, it's a waste of space because a woman will lock the door to keep a man from walking in, and a man Wil lock the door from keeping a woman from walking in, but the bathroom is designed for multiple people. read more

Awful, wretched Kroger! I HATE this Kroger with a fiery passion. First of all, most of the employees are angry and hateful. No one is interested in customer service. I have gone in and walked out about 3 different times without buying anything because I have gotten so frustrated. I have sworn to myself that I will never go again. They oftentimes don't even have the most basic of produce. how can a GROCERY STORE be out of ONIONS every time I need an onion?
