Krispy Kreme: A Temple to Sugar
    Rebecca D.

I'm not a Kripsy Kreme person - I'm not sure exactly why because I do love doughnuts. I guess you can just go too far with some things - like, if I'm already eating a doughnut do I really need it to be stuffed full of one kind of sugary gloop, topped with another and sprinkled with extra sugar? It can all seem a bit excessive sometimes. Still, I do like doughnuts, so I decided to give the new(ish) branch of Krispy Kreme a go. I figured if I stick to their slightly tamer, "classic" selection I couldn't go far wrong. I picked up a plain glazed, a raspberry glazed and a chocolate glazed ring to take home and share. Good news: My predictions were right, the classic range are much easier to eat if your sweet tooth isn't all that sweet. My favourite was the raspberry glazed, which is just a good traditional doughnut stuffed with raspberry jam. It wasn't even overly stuffed. This is what I'll opt for in future, but the others were pretty good too. This branch of Krsipy Kreme is huge and worth a visit. The staff are great and possibly even overly dedicated to good customer service (I waited for less than two minutes for a coffee I ordered and they apologised for the wait). You can watch the doughnuts being made thanks to the glass-fronted doughnut factory. The place is huge. It's open 24 hours. It has a drive through. Again, this to me seems excessive in the same way that the over-the-top doughnuts do. Maybe doubling down on everything is just the Krispy Kreme way. On the other hand, do I want to live in a world where I can wake up at 3 am and immediately go and buy 12 doughtnuts? Yes, I probably do.

I'm actually not a KK fan at all, I will be upfront about that. I remember how much hype there was about them opening in Melbourne and it was just ridiculous - hours long queues at their store and KK mania. So it took me a while to get along to the new KK store in Glasgow. It's a massive store and has it's own car park (the signage isn't all that clear - it says the entrance is for the drive thru but there is actually a carpark there for KK customers). I decided to go inside as I've pretty much only had KK once before so I didn't know what donuts they had. Inside there's a mid-size seating area and a smaller than expected counter of donuts. The bit I liked was that you can see into the cooking area, that's pretty cool. I just got 3 donuts for this visit - chocolate ring, chocolate ring with sprinkles and then asked the staff member for her advice about a 3rd donut. She said to get the biscoff one so who am I to argue? Totalling £4.85 for three and packaged in a nice box. The staff were super friendly so that's nice. I've had the sprinkles donut and I have to admit, it is pretty nice but also a little sickly. Would I rush back? No, as I just don't love KK all that much. But I know others do so I think it's good that we finally have a store in Glasgow. And maybe if I was out really late and needed a donut fix at 2am, I'd come to the drive thru for the novelty!

Always time for a Krispy Kreme! Decided to use the drive thru and was served immediately. There is a menu showing all the different doughnuts and prices so it's easy to place your order. I opted for a peanut butter doughnut and a cookie dough doughnut. I really recommend rhe cookie dough doughnut which was yummy and complete with cookie pieces on top. I've managed to resist the peanut butter doughnut...for now! Service was great. Drove round to the window, paid and headed home to make a cup of tea! There are so many places creating awesome doughnuts now that I think Krispy Kreme is kind of losing it's touch! Still, £4.70 for 3 doughnuts (one wasn't for me....honest!) I'm pretty happy with!

Since long time ago I wanted to try the doughnuts from Krispy kreme!! And the experience was awesome! They couldn't be more tasty, made just two minutes before you order them, and while you are waiting on the queu the staff offer you free doughnuts to try. The baking process it's fantastic because you can see every step of it. I want to go every single day ;)

So walking in to Krispy Kreme for the first time is like walking in to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Cos there literally IS a mini factory in it, where all the donuts are made, and, sadly, where some fallen soldiers never see daylight. It's a wee bit intimidating when you've never been in before, and your bus is due in 7 minutes, but thankfully there's a handy little express counter where you can pick up a mixed or standard dozen. The production line is at the rear of the store, although there was no decoration going on when we were in. Which, let's face it, is the most exciting part. They have a seating area if you can't wait till you get home, and serve tea and coffee. Also, I've been duly informed that their drive through is 24 hours!

Well, the long-awaited day finally came; the opening of Glasgow's very own Krispy Kreme! Why I wasn't invited to their VIP pre-opening event I'll never know as I was one of their biggest champions for opening a shop in jolly old Glasgow, but anyway, bitterness aside (I'm only jesting!), I didn't go on the 1st day as I am not a big fan of queueing for ages. Especially in the cold and rain. No ta. So on Day 2 of GKK (Glasgow's Krispy Kreme) I pootled along in the, yes you guessed, cold and rain to check out what is apparently the UK's biggest KK store. Wow. Certainly from the outside its a beast of a store - situated in the old Clydebuilt Maritime museum at Braehead, to the right of M&S, it comprises of a decent sized sit in part and also a large Drive Thru to the right. For now the sit in is open from 7am - 10:30pm but I think the Drive Thru is 24 hour, handy for all those midnight munchies moments. I must admit it seemed much smaller inside than I imagined it to be... There's seating for about 30/40 folk I think. What makes this one different to the Edinburgh and other Hotlight KK stores I've seen is that this one has a Speedy Counter (not the official name may I add!) - this is situated to the right as you walk in and this sells only the pre-boxed Original Glazed or pre-picked assorted dozen. Its a great idea for those in a hurry and also for those of us that like to just to take our time perusing the doughnutty delights, we don't get to feel hurried by those that just want 12 (or 24 or more...Doughnut Party anyone?!) to go, in a hurry. They really need that dough, man. Obviously it's still very early days but the staff were doing a pretty good job of keeping folk informed/amused/pumped up in the queue. I wasn't queuing for long at all but whilst in the queue I was given a free mini Strawberry Kremeshake (which was really good!) and a wee handy, pocket-sized Doughnut Guide, should you ever wish to make your own version of KK Top Trumps or go on Mastermind with KK as your specialist subject or summat. I was happy sad again when reading the menu as they've got rid of the deliciously dreamy Vanilla Cheesecake doughnut which I've only just discovered but they have brought back my favourite - the Caramel Iced Ring! Yas! You beauty! In my opinion there are too many chocolate based ones but, that's just what I think and my taste. I'd like to see a bit more in the way of different flavours and them have some of the ones they sell in the US, such as the Red Velvet doughnut! HOLLA!! I'd love that. Another improvement I'd make is offer a deal on a box of 6 as sometimes 3's not enough but 12 is way too many...Individual doughnuts are priced from around £1.45 up to £11.95 for an assorted, pick-your-own dozen (what I usually get). They had an offer on just now that's buy a dozen and get another dozen Original Glazed dognuts (as my Dad used to call them) for only an extra few quid (£15 something for 24 doughnuts) The lady serving said they freeze well which I didn't know but I don't have space in my teeny freezer for 12 doughnuts sadly... If you've never been to a Hotlight store then you'll be pleased to see you get to watch the doughnuts getting made in the 'Doughnut Theatre', its pretty cool and slightly mesmerising...mmm...dough.... Also you get to try their coffee or milkshakes and buy their merch too should you wish too. It's a 5 stars from me now. I have high hopes for this place and can't wait to hear when their Hotlight Happy Hour will be. As Homer would say; Doh!...(Nuts).

Dozen glazed donuts are only £9.50 and are normally £1.50 each, so they are almost half price if you are getting 12!

Thanks to Carolyn E for adding the photo of this place otherwise I was in such an oblivion I think I'd have missed it! So, they do doughnuts. I'm not sure the name is entirely accurate as they didn't seem to be hot when I purchased them - although the owner did tell me they are made fresh on site every day so they are HOT in that sense. Today there was a selection of doughnuts - no mini ones, sadly - I got the chocolate & blueberries, coconut and chocolate & custard doughnuts. Now, I'll be honest - I don't really have a sweet tooth and I prefer doughnuts which are relatively plain and sugar coated rather than icing. I've tried the chocolate & blueberries one so far and thought it was really good, clearly fresh and a really nice filling which was a bit unusual. Prices are reasonable at £1.50 for a two filling doughnut and £1 for a single filling. They also sell things like coffee, baked cheesecakes, hot dog bake and ham & cheese bake. The owner was super friendly and welcoming, and really helpful. This wee shop definitely deserves a visit.

I don't think they're very much like a regular doughnut as we know them and more like a big sweet filled bun with glazing. I think it's the glaze they use I'm not keen on ~ I've tried 2 different flavours and they both had the same, overpowering, candied fruits flavour glazing on them which detracted from the actual filling flavour/s. Their fresh, mini (and proper hot) doughnuts however I am a fan of. You can get them in plain sugared or coated in cinnamon. I opted for cinnamon & they were delicious. You get 4 smaller, ringed doughnuts for £1.20 which I think is really good, especially considering they cook them fresh to order. As well as doughnuts they sell baked cheesecake which I haven't tried yet and some savoury snacks too such as toasties. They also have a basic selection of hot drinks. The lady who works here is always really friendly and does try a bit of the ol' up-sale on you which is fair enough as they're a small business trying to get by and with just selling such few products at a very cheap price (most doughnuts are only £1 each) you do have to wonder how long they'll be around for... If you're in the area then deffo pop in and give them a try. The mini hot fresh doughnuts are delicious & you can save yourself a trip to The Fort by getting them here!

I'm a massive fan (see previous review of their St Enoch Square branch) but the only day I can make it to Nic's is a Saturday due to their opening hours and me working relatively far away. So when I heard their new establishment would be open til 11pm, 7 days a week, I was pretty excited to say the least! It's so great that the Nic's concept has really taken off, especially since most new places in Glasgow seem to be massive chain burger joints these days!!! For those who might not be aware, Nic's NYC Deli is just that. They serve glorious pressed sandwiches with delicious flavour combos, hot dogs, taco bowls and pancakes among other tasty offerings - like their amaaaazing doughnuts and American goodies such as Twinkies (which I definitely want to try at some point, just because!) This branch also has the extra addition of crepes (sweet and savoury!) so those who frequented this place as a Crêpe à Croissant can still get their fix. There's always the worry that another branch won't quite have the same feel as the one you're used to, but I'm happy to report that this definitely isn't the case with this one. I absolutely adore the decor, it's really cool without looking like it's trying too hard and the whole place looks fab! As for the food, it is as delicious as ever! The bf opted for a chili dog last night as he hadn't tried their hot dogs at all yet, and he absolutely scarfed it down, totally loved it. I got their LA Club Lite (chicken, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and either chipotle or dijon mayo) since I hadn't had that one yet and I flipping love avocado and bacon together. It was brilliant, the bacon was done extremely well which I love, and their ciabatta bread is very tasty indeed. We were gonna get some doughnuts to take away, but our server offered us a free one each since they've just opened! Result!! I've got a Snickernut sitting in its wee bag under my desk right now, but since it's lunchtime I have a feeling it might disappear fairly soon... What more can I say? The staff are great, the food is great, the prices are great too - I think all in we paid about £12 for our food and a drink each which, for the quality and size of everything is pretty darn good! It's extremely reassuring to know that if I feel the need for a Nic's I can just pop along and get one...the downside being this might happen far too frequently from now on!!!

As the name would suggest it's loaded with American style food, don't be down heartened though this is no run of the mill 'American diner' serving cheap hot dogs and yucky burgers from the cash and carry. The food from Nic's is tasty, well thought out and delicious. There are of course the likes of baked potatoes and sandwiches with lovely looking toppings to be enjoyed. My eyes however were very much glued to the Hot Dog menu where you can try such delights as the amazing Cheesy Pig Dog ( bacon and cheese) or the BBQ Dog (sweet fried onions, BBQ Sauce and dill pickle) or the very tempting Glasga Dog ( black Pudding and fried egg). What makes these dogs in my opinion the best take away dogs in Glasgow is that they fry off their dogs for a few minutes which makes them extra tasty. I've not tried the freshly made pancakes or waffles yet but they do come with some lovely looking toppings - the Banana Beast ( banana, maple, pecan nuts and ice cream) Peanut Butter Jelly Time (peanut butter and blackcurrant or strawberry jam) or the Sweet Porker Stack ( bacon and maple syrup) these are definitely next on my list to try from the menu. On my last visit I finally gave in to the cool looking doughnuts. These lovely little clouds of light dough are made in-house ensuring they are as fresh as they come. The base is so soft and flavoursome, the topping is a luscious thick layer of fondant sprinkled with a variety of American style toppings - Oreo, peanut butter cups, smarties, marshmallows......the list is endless. What really excited me tho was while chatting with the girls they announced that they were expecting their doughnut menus to arrive any minute. Hang on! Let's just think about that for a second........a menu......dedicated to doughnuts.......it's the stuff of dreams! Nic's is a great wee lunch spotwhere they use really good quality food and the girls who work there are all lovely and helpful when trying to make your selection....what's not to love about this place.

Going back to the food, it did take me a couple of minutes to choose what to have because EVERYTHING looked awesome. Even the SALADS!!! I was guided by the lovely staff who work there and plumped for the Taco bowl. A large, crispy tortilla shaped into a bowl stuffed with salad, guacamole, sour cream, PULLED PORK (this was my topping), covered with jack cheese and some Glasgow Megadeath chilli sauce. Great stuff. And for dessert you MUST get one of their special donuts... loads of flavours. Think Krispy Kreme but without the nasty aftertaste (you know what I mean!). No more hauling butt to Braehead to get my KK fix when I'm in need of a doughnut high. I have to add that if you haven't been in a wee while the new doughnut flavours are da BOMB! I love the Nutella ones (although I think they've sadly got rid of the ring one which was divine!) and the new Salted Caramel Cheesecake and Maple Crunch flavours are most excellent indeed.
