27. Japchae (잡채)
Tara H.

Came here on a weekend and was able to get seated right away. I ordered a combo that came with bulgogi and a tofu soup. The bulgogi was very good and I enjoyed eating this with some of the kimchi from banchan. I got to choose any of the tofu soup options to go with my combo. I ordered the pork dumpling tofu soup and thought it was very good. The banchan as a whole was good, I liked each separate dish a lot. I also ordered the japchae with bulgogi. I thought the japchae tasted great and made for good leftovers the next day. I would definitely come back here.

Very comfortable atmosphere coupled with great customer service telling us exactly what we would be getting and specific details about the menu and dishes.

Tofu soup

There are many Korean tofu places around the U District and we were guided by Yelp only. There are two huge TV screens and the place was quite empty. Clay pot Bimbibap, with beef, was very good. Just the right amount of crisp rice cling to the pot wall. Tofu soup was flavorful. Both piping hot. Appetizers were less than other Korean places, but we did not require the full table of small bites.

I've heard mixed reviews about this place but when I went it was good! The galbi was tender and flavorful, and the beef soup was comforting, though pretty standard. The side dishes were decent and nothing stood out. Service was sporadic but still polite, it was just one lady running around so I don't blame her. There's tons of seating inside and it was clean as well. Better than expected given what I'd heard.

Some of the best Korean food we've had in Seattle! Highly recommend! Will definitely be going back.

Great spot for Korean food! The setting is fairly casual but clean, and food is tasty. The prices are very reasonable too, especially if you order off the express menu! I got the spicy pork kimbap, and bibimbap with beef. I really liked the kimbap, and the spicy pork had a kick but wasn't too spicy. And I liked how the bibimbap came with all the side dishes! I also had enough leftover for another meal later. The menu has a lot of great options, so I look forward to coming back!

Overall it's decent. Not too fancy. The free side dishes were good. The food was okay. The combo set would be the way to go. The service was good and the food came out relatively quickly except they forgot one of our friends' order which they did not realize it at all. The temperature inside was super hot when we were there. Not sure it was an AC issue or the owner did not realize it was too warm. The price was acceptable.

We came just for the kimbap. We heard that it was good because it was freshly made. The place looks like a you order at the counter but if you're eating in then you just sit down and they serve you. We ordered the shrimp and tuna mayo kimbap. It was indeed freshly made and I was excited about that. Both had good flavor but the rice was too wet and gave it a mushy flavor. Kimbap should have drier rice than this so that was disappointing. All in all it's okay but I wouldn't seek it out.

Bulgogi Kimbap

I've only tried the kimbap here, but it is such a good deal! $7.50 for a generous sized roll stuffed with fillings and made to order. You can also sit inside the restaurant but I've only taken it to go before. I've tried the bulgogi and tuna mayo kimbaps, both of which were fantastic. Highly recommend!

Korean Tofu House used to be my go to while I was a student at UW and for good reason. The tofu soup is perfectly flavored and they are generous with their sides, which are all delicious. I've tried every single tofu soup they offer, and find the pork to be the best one personally. I don't find their spice level to be that spicy as someone who loves spicy food, so I always go for the Extra Spicy. The express version of their restaurant is very spacious and clean. I also love that they give out free barley tea!

Spicy Pork and Hotpot bulgogi
Holly Z.

Just like it's name, Korean Tofu House Express, the food came quick after we ordered. If they're not busy, just sit yourself and there's qr code on the table. The food was affordable and good sizing. We got the spicy pork and Hotpot bulgogi. The spicy pork was a little spicy but still very delicious. If you can't eat spicy, I'd suggest to ask them to lower the spice level. The hotpot bulgogi comes with starch noodles, rice cake, green onion, onion, carrot, and the purple rice. Pretty much all dishes serves with the purple rice and side dishes. The side dishes they provided was fish cake, potatoes, kimchi, veg pancake, and bean sprouts. Overall we enjoyed the food a lot.

Driest kimbap I've ever had. It was unseasoned, and rice was hard. Felt like eating day old rice, with beef jerky and veggies with ripped up seaweed holding it. Warning do not eat without water near you

Spicy 4. Beef Tofu Soup

I've been searching for traditional tofu soup and I was pleasantly surprised by Korean Tofu House Express! Located in University District, a Korean Tofu House Express doesn't have its own parking lot and street parking in Udistrict can be chaotic! I went with a group of 4 friends on a Friday afternoon and we were seated immediately. When you walk in, you'll notice that the restaurant itself is clean and simple. They have plenty of tables available to sit at and you pay at the counter before leaving. Our server was very nice and was quick to provide us with recommendations on the menu. I also loved that we got banchan as well! I ended up getting the spicy beef tofu soup and it was the perfect amount of spice and saltiness. I missed this authentic taste and I'm happy that this spot delivered it! Overall I do recommend checking out Korean tofu house express if you're near Udistrict and want some authentic Korean food!

It used to be one of my favorite Korean places. Now Deteriorating taste, nearly no service. This store is getting by worse a lot lately.

The crowds are less heavy now and yelp joining the waitlist is super convenient. Although today's waitlist join said it would take 16-33min to be seated, I got the text that table was ready within 3 minutes. We were still en route and made it within 15 minutes but were removed from the waitlist because we didn't answer the 3 minute call. Nonetheless, we only waited 10min for another table. The dining area that is nearest to reception can get "cold" particularly the corner, we sat there once and your elders will not like it. Today we got seated there again and decided to wait for the other side where the AC wasn't full blast. Its all chill. Friendly, accommodating staff. The food comes fast, like Din Tai Fung. The cost too, is like DTF. Overall, its good, but not worth the higher cost, but the service and cleanliness make it a combined 5 Star. The Kalbi Tang is the star, a must get every single visit.

It is set up like a cute korean style bar with small round tables which make sharing easier. They have a pretty good selection on their menu and we ordered a couple of items to share. The Rose Ttoekbokki with cheese was very yummy, but it kinda tasted like pasta with rice cakes instead of spaghetti. I think that is the point of this dish, so if you want a more traditional spicy flavor then get the other ttoekbokki option (spicy rice cakes). We still loved this one and the rice cakes were so chewy and delicious. The cheese corn was very yummy and exactly what you would expect. It pairs perfectly with the other dishes. My friends also shared the Seafood ramen and Beef bulgogi. They liked both dishes. One of our favorite things were the side dishes actually! The tofu was so yummy, and the bean sprouts were so crunchy and well seasoned. We even asked for extra! The only aspect that makes it difficult to come more often is the price point. Since the dishes are so big and shareable, it is easy to split amongst a group, but it is a little less affordable to come here for dinner and drinks.

JangAn puts diners in the driver's seat, meaning that seasoning your soup is up to you and your own preferences. This method of seasoning complements the beauty of seolleongtang, which seems to deepen as you eat it. Warmth, seasoning, and time gradually coaxes more richness from the bowl, so take your time and enjoy the process. One special shout out for the banchan. I was the one saying "hello" first and saying "how are you?" before the cashier said anything. Kind of awkward/standoffish but not a dealbreaker when the food is good. Most recently I had the kimchi jigae, which was relatively spicy, even when I asked for less spicy (and they said they could accommodate). I'd say it was like 2-3 stars. Flavor was great though and it was a decent portion (for $17) and satisfying. Also, a pretty wide range of menu options, despite it being a small place. There were 4 complimentary banchan dishes (napa kimchi, cucumber kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, and fish cakes). Note that I don't think there are free refills like other places... maybe you can ask but I didn't see anyone doing so. For 1-2 people, it's a relatively generous amount. I have dined here before so the interiors isn't too different just small changes. Let's jump to the food- I ordered the galbitang and it came with 10 different banchan. I've tried galbitang at other places, but there was an umami that many didn't have. All the banchan were flavorful too, I thought the kimchi had a good balance as sometimes it can be a bit on the saltier side. Service was great too, the sever was friendly and checked often.
