I've been coming here for the past few years and have found that the quality has fluctuated but the most recent time I came, it was good! The fish was fresh and the rice wasn't soggy. My go to's are always salmon and eel nigiri. The pepper tuna or salmon wasn't my favorite but that's ok. They also recently added noodles to their AYCE menu that I didn't try but they look promising. Everything came out pretty quick and service is always great. They've upgraded to ordering on a tablet at each table! Waiting time has decreased due to this. They removed the ice cream off the menu. Now there's a self serve ice cream machine closer to the bathroom/bigger dining room for both all you can eat and a la carte customers. Still my favorite AYCE sushi place in the city. read more

I was pretty disappointed with this place. I had seen videos of their sister restaurant and the fish looked super fresh. The fish was not very fresh here, at least for the nigiri. Definitely order your sushi in hand roll form, the fish they use for their hand rolls is a much better cut and way more fresh. The fish on their nigiri and in their cut rolls are dry and not good. The tuna has a nice deep red color to eat so I know they don't purchase the pinky colored tuna that is older. Lots of great drinks to choose from. Only thing I didn't enjoy was the miso soup. Food: 10/10 My group of 5 did ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT SUSHI at this place during lunch time, because it's only $22.99 per person until 3pm from Monday-Friday. We got this little pink slip where we marked the appetizers and sushi we wanted to order. The shrimp tempura was very crispy and the sauce went well with it. The takoyaki was okay, it needed more sauce and bonito flakes. The shrimp siumai was warm and soft. The sesame balls were crunchy, soft, and these had a lot of red bean filling compared to other restaurants! The sushi was absolutely delicious. I love how each plate came with its own decoration of a container with dry ice. The salmon nigiri was huge, and tasted so fresh. The eel nigiri had the nice unagi flavor and they did not hold back with their fish portions. Overall would come back here with the whole family! We had 3 rounds of sushi! Service: 10/10 There were at least 5 or 6 different varieties of sushi on our plate for each order, so I was surprised that it only took 5-10 minutes for each order to arrive to our table! Koi's nigiri is the freshest I've found at an all you can eat restaurant and why I've returned so many times. It also helps that the sushi rolls are fabulous too. Roll favorites include MVP, Amazing Tuna, and New Moon. As for nigiri, I haven't found one I don't like. Definitely get a lychee martini if you're in the mood to drink! Koi Sushi is a really good spot for all you can eat sushi! During the weekdays, lunch is only $23 per person. On the weekends and for dinner in general, it is $32 per person. I really liked that they did not require the whole table to do all you can eat because if you're only eating one roll, it's not really worth it. Plus, you can't take home leftovers for all you can eat and you get charged if you over-order and don't finish. So make sure you're hungry! There are a lot of tables and we were able to get a nice booth spot without a reservation on a weekend. I loved the range of appetizers they had! There were a lot of veggie options, like the jalenpeno bombs, veggie spring rolls, and veggie gyoza. I tried the koi pizza and it was so good! It was huge - I could've had it as my meal. I wasn't expecting it at all! They have a ton of rolls to choose from, including a list of veggie rolls; however, I wish they had one or two signature rolls that were all veggie. The regular veggie rolls with just one or two veggies can be kind of boring. I ended up going for the spicy killer! We ordered a bunch of items we typically get at other sushi buffet restaurants for comparison including baby octopus salad, sashimi salad, skewers, seaweed salad and nigiri. Their dishes are definitely on the heavier and saucier side which made it impossible to taste the freshnes of the ingredients... They also have the rule of ordering a sushi roll for each sashi item with maximum of 3 pieces per order - definitely the first time I've seen such rule... Currently on the hunt for the best AYCE sushi in Chicago and decided to check out this place - tldr: not the best but I've also had worse. Maybe come for lunch instead of dinner! My group of 3 and I came around 5pm on a Sunday - it wasn't too busy. There's plenty of street parking - I think the spots along Koi Sushi on Southport Ave might be free, but we did paid parking along Clybourn. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was bigger than I expected! They also have a bar with what seems like an extensive drink menu. Their AYCE menu was a lot smaller than I expected. The apps selection was ok! We got edamame, fried calamari, soft shell crab, crab rangoon and the baked mussels. They were all average - I think other spots I've been to seem to have more app selection and were more enjoyable. Sushi-wise, their sushi rolls seem good and the rice balance was good for the rolls. The nigiri selection was expansive but was a little rice-heavy - the fish was good! The sushi is presented so well and they like to use a lot of dry ice for it all! The one thing I will mention for this place is their sashimi. It is fairly large but you get 3 pieces per 1 roll that is ordered. Bottomless sushi is always a vibe, but Koi Sushi in Lincoln Park is definitely the best bang for your buck in Chicago. It's $22.99 for lunch and $31.99 for dinner. We started off with some amazing drinks, I had the mango passionfruit refresher and my cousin had the rose blossom lemonade. I was envious so I ordered one to go and it was phenomenal! We ordered a variety of appetizers, including the fried tempura shrimp, sesame balls, chicken on a stick, vegetable gyoza and crab Rangoon. For making rolls, we ordered a couple of speciality rolls and they were so good! They brought them out in a huge boat either dry ice for QUITE the presentation. Their appetizers were good besides shrimp tempura and calamari (batter too thick). We won't be back. Weekend price for dinner AYCE sushi is $31.99. We ordered several appetizers (steamed and fried shumai, seaweed salad, sashimi salad, shrimp tempura, fried calamari, Japanese chicken nuggs, crab rangoons, miso soup) and were happy with most of them. We felt the batter for the fried calamari and shrimp tempura was too thick. Then we ordered nigiri (salmon, tuna, scallop, eel, yellowtail, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, spicy kani) and were impressed with the presentation once it was delivered to our table. HOWEVER, things took a turn when we took our first bite. We realized the fish to rice ratio was 10% fish and 90% rice. We were struggling to finish our nigiri because they seemed strict about charging $1/rice block being left behind. See my photos for the pathetic, thin cut of fish on top of the rice. Also, once you are finished paying the manager comes and rudely asks you to leave stating that there are other customers waiting for a table. A pleasant surprise! I used to only go to Sushi Taku for AYCE, but I'm glad I found Koi! I took my friend here for her birthday on a Thursday night. We got right in, no wait, and there were drink specials ($7 on select cocktails). Obviously, on my first time here, I got a little excited and over-ordered. I had a lot of leftovers and was charged a left-over fee. I see this coming up a lot from other reviews and I think the business can make an easy fix- just limit each person to 2 or 3 rolls per order, and then they can order more after they finish. This way, there's no assumed mal-intent for attempting to over-consume. OR make the rolls smaller/ half portions. The menu is extensive and there are dozens of signature and regular rolls. Some felt a little similar/repetitive. Based on my first time here, my favorites included: Mexican, Green Turtle, and Pink Lady. I still want to try New Moon, Cherry Blossom, and Sweet 16.
