Placed a pick up order via DoorDash only because they wouldn't answer the phone. Noticed the price on their menu was over 60% less than the price I paid in the DoorDash app, but again they wouldn't answer the phone. Infuriatingly, the employee said they recommend calling in instead of using an app. Arrived when the app said it would be ready. They never prepared the order. I was then told that they "were told" not to answer the phone because they were low on rice. But they still would accept app orders, that are over 60% more. $25.70 for a sushi roll vs $15.95 over the phone, again which they would not answer. I would not recommend this restaurant because they would rather have the customer pay more and not answer their phone. read more

Sadly I've had a few disappointing take out meals that fall short of the high prices. Today compelled me to write a review of the $20 (with tax and mandatory gratuity) Shoyu ramen soup. The pork is inedible (it's like freeze dried cardboard?), broth bland, and when trying to order some additional veggies, learned they are limited to carrots and cabbage because they don't really "do vegetables"there according to the hostess as they focus on fish. Take a hard pass on the ramen. The rolls have been good in the past, luckily. Otherwise not much to recommend this place. I recognize the pandemic has been tough, but this is impacting everyone, and I've seen other spots rebound well with quality food. Forget these "Elite" yelpers. It's an over inflated status for being hyper critical and verbose. The sushi chefs are wonderful. Crab is the best I've had. Sushi isn't over sauced and the veggie gyoza is a must. There are some good things, some ehh. But it's a casual spot with good quality, and price point. This has been our go to since moving here. (We've tried them ALL) It's consistent and that says a lot for most places. I lived in Japan for 9 years, and it feels like the 'neighborhood' spots in Japan. Placed a basic order for two an hour and a half before closing. Waited 30 min before restaurant notified us that they couldn't fill our order due to "high demand" and cancelled it. Had they notified us when we placed the order, we would have had other options. So it's grilled cheese tonight :). Never had a problem with any of the other sushi restaurants in town. You would not think, hundreds of miles from a coast line, that you could find great sushi. You would also not think, looking at the inauspicious storefront of Kohnami that such wonderful food, service, and atmosphere was inside. This place not only has unique and interesting selections on the sushi bar menu, but an exceptional menu of hot Japanese foods and authentic hot pots. The fresh fish for sushi, and the top-drawer sushi chefs there though are the stars of this place, unless you also like to star gaze miles away from Hollywood. Kohnami has been a favorite of celebrities who come to Santa Fe or live there. I've seen Shirley Maclaine in there numerous times, and I'm told that more modern stars like Julia Roberts and Matt Damon have made it a dining stop while in the City Different. read more

*** I see that Kohnami has two reviews thus far. A 1 star and a 5 star. I'll just split the reviews right down the middle. We came in late...about ten minutes before closing on a Sunday night. We were polite enough to inquire if the kitchen was still open, offering them the out to not seat us if it was a problem. I've been on the other side of that situation. You want to go home and a group rolls in at 5 minutes to close. Doh! I was not very hungry and ordered a bowl of miso soup and some sushi. My wife ordered some kind of beef and rice affair and the kids had rice and california rolls. The miso soup was pretty good. To be honest it may have benefited from the fact that it was late and I was cold and hungry. The sushi was fine if unremarkable. I sampled my wife's beef and it was a bit chewy. Her salad was nice with a flavorful dressing. I also sampled the california rolls. They were OK. In fairness, I'm not a fan of them so... Based on my single visit I would expect average Japanese food from Kohnami. read more

Fool me once.... I acknowledge I have had good experienced dining in with Kohnami. I find the sushi fresh and pleasant tasting. I will NEVER order take out from them again, however. On my last two orders, they have gotten items wrong. Most important, I ordered Masago, which is composed of tiny smelt eggs. On both occasions, I have received Ikura, which are large salmon eggs. I will not eat these, so I have to throw perfectly good sushi away. I've tried calling the restaurant to discuss the issue, but the manager does not call me back as promised. read more

Used to like this place, but I will not return. If I am going to spend money, I want to come to a place and feel welcome. I left feeling as though everyone forgot how to be kind to others and show decency to customers who are paying. Our server who was sweet did not know a thing about the different saki. The service at the sushi bar was rude and lacking. We asked a few questions regarding sushi options and were curtly answered "everything". We decided not to ask more and instead asked for the bill instead of more sushi. We will not return. I gave it 2 star instead of 1 star because they have potential. The atmosphere and location are fun. I used to come to this place, but I was so sad to see the atmosphere and energy of it change. The food is actually ok. The lack of good service and the rude attitude helped us to decide to support other local restaurants over this one. So disappointed! read more

Yet another restaurant in Santa Fe that has fallen into disrepair.... I used to love going to Kohnami with my family over the years, but the last few visits have been disappointing. Service was lousy, food took a long time to come out, people who ordered after us, got their food before us, decor has gotten old and worn, the dining area seems dirty and poorly maintained, flies buzzing around the sushi bar (that no one seemed to worry about), the sushi chef kept shoving the same food in his mouth as he was making it for the customers, also taking money & tips as he prepared food, and to top it all off he let out a big sneeze without covering his mouth. Disclaimer: This was during COVID-19/Pandemic times. . My partner and I were definitely craving Kohnami. (We've ordered pick up before and enjoyed it!) but our experience was horrendous with patio seating. The patio had a nice atmosphere but we were never taken to a table so we walked over to one and my partner waved at a cook through the window to be reassured we can sit there. Then we read 1 Star yelp reviews of Kohnami as we waited 10 minutes for a server to give us a menu. 10 minutes later we got waters and gave our order. . We got the sushi rolls 15 minutes before my partners bento box and the rice bowl was MESSY! The chicken had an odd texture and the miso soup and salad wasn't included like it said on the menu. Also the menu mentioned vegetable tempura but there was only 1 fried sweet potato. The soda machine was broken as well so we had syrupy drinks. Last but not least when we asked for a check we gave a 100 dollar bill and waited for change for 15 minutes! The server alerted us that she was the only one working but honestly how could an establishment not have an extra server now that the patio is open??? The experience was awful but the sushi was good ‍ . NOTE: As I was writing this my partner is sick to his stomach and we are well assuming that it's from this place.....wish us luck read more

Fun little resteraunt next to cowgirl. Traditional seating in back. We ordered edamame and tempura for an appetizer and it was decent. Salad was a ginger dressing and quite good. Miso was thick and warm. My mom got a bento box and it was more than enough. My dad did the teriyaki beef. It was the winner. Daughter did teriyaki chicken it was good. I got the Caterpillar roll which was excellent. I ordered another which wasn't as good but can't remember the name. Service was effecient especially for Valentine's Day. read more

We were looking for a new sushi place since Shoko closed. We have been here twice this far and have been impressed with the food and service. Restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside. The rolls were very good, fresh, and decently priced. Not the best sushi I have ever had, but very good amongst the choices in Santa Fe. Will definitely return for sushi. read more

Wow, this place has plummeted...we have gone to Kohnami many times over the years, but hadn't been in over 2 years. It was dirty, the bathroom was gross like a gas station in the middle of nowhere. The staff member that showed us outside to our table was less than friendly and when we reached our table, it was dirty. There were globs of wet, dirty used napkins on the outside floor and bits of trash all over the ground. The table was definitely not inviting, there were not placemats or any covering on the tables and it looked filthy. It was a metal, outside patio table, so without placemats, anything that spilled when right through into your lap. My son's soup did spill through. We just held our chopsticks because the table was sticky and dirty. My son ordered the beef teriyaki, which was basically inedible. At the end of our meal, when the waiter asked how everything was, we told him the beef, which was still visible all on the plate uneaten, was so tough and not good. His reaction was not surprised and he said something like "Oh, I am so sorry. Sometimes our beef is not very good". We nearly laughed because it was such an odd thing for a waiter to say. He quickly offered his staff discount to our bill, which was sweet of him. He knew our meal was less than good. He should have recommended my son try something different when he ordered though. Overall, it was an incredibly disappointing experience. It was sad since we have some great memories from over the past 15 years. read more

I walked out after being seated in the dingy back room with plaster painted pond scum green and not being brought so much as a glass of water after 20 minutes waiting. I live in Los Angeles and have been to Japan, so my bar for sushi is fairly high. Usually I stay away from sushi joints in land-locked states, but after three days of Southwestern food, my husband and I were desperate. We gave Kohnami a try and it was great! Round 1 of the salmon sushi was outstanding - buttery, fresh and melted in our mouths. The roll we tried (I think it was the Ladybug Roll?) was just as great - better than many rolls I've had in LA. The yellowtail & albacore sushi were very good, and the green tea was fresh and nutty. The edamame was a solid B+ (it wasn't quite salty enough for us) and Round 2 of the salmon wasn't cut quite as well as Round 1, but still quite good. Decor and music were excellent, too - much better than most LA sushi restaurants. And while we didn't drink the sake, I remember their menu being impressive. I'm knocking off one star for the expense (though I understand it - it must be expensive to get sushi-grade fish in Santa Fe) and for Round 2 of the salmon. But regardless, I highly recommend Kohnami to anyone who needs a high-quality sushi fix in Santa Fe. read more

I'm really upset by the experience I had here. I went in with a couple friends about two weeks ago, we had two servers I guess? Really couldn't tell who our server was one of them an older woman maybe in her 40s. The other women we dealt with had green hair and was a little younger. Both treated us really poorly and had a really bad attitude. Very rude and unprofessional I left in tears because they treated us so bad. On my first visit both the fish and edamame were a bit past their prime, and that will get a sushi place crossed off my list real quick. It was a couple years before I tried them again, and I came back a couple times just to confirm, and while the quality was better than my first visit, it was still inconsistent and not up to par for sushi. Authentic sushi and udon in the heart of landlocked Sante Fe. We travel to Japan at least once a year and eat sushi through out the US. Kohnami is a gem. The fish is flown in and is still "fish" with skin and slight irregular slices following the lines of the fish, not rectangular slabs. The tempura udon was classic. The sushi chef has been working his way east, from Japan to California and now to the more quiet and less crowded Sante Fe. Big win for Sante Fe ;-) read more

I have been to many sushi places in my lifetime, all over the United States. Sushi is one of my passions, and Kohnami will not disappoint. The service is friendly and fast, and the food is equally as good. The sushi chefs take the time to greet every customer and thank them graciously when they leave. There is general seating and then rooms in the back for a more romantic private dining experience, where you sit on the floor traditional Japanese style. This is something I want to try next time I visit. Everything I ever ordered here was delicious. Be it rolls, sashimi, nigiri, and soup/ salad, or fried crab sticks. The prices are a bit high for some things, but this is a luxury food so it is to be expected. This is definitely on the "go back to" list. Check them out! read more

Normally a great experience dining in at Kohnami. This was my first time ordering takeout from them. It was a let down. I tried ordering over the phone, but no one ever answered. I ordered on Grubhub. Both items I ordered were 10 dollars more on Grubhub than had I ordered in the restaurant. We were hungry and this is what we wanted, so we moved forward. A party of four of us went here tonight, we are here from out of town. We were excited to eat some sushi! Unfortunately, I can't believe what a letdown this place was. Terrible service (the waitress forgot we existed. We had to pull teeth to get an order in, finally asking a busser to go get our waitress). The waitress argued with my fiancé about her order... all she wanted was to not get sea urchin in the chef's choice sashimi combination. A reasonable request. The waitress went on to say several times there was no way to ensure what my fiancé would get. Is it that hard to tell the chef "she likes EVERYTHING except sea urchin?" Swap out sea urchin (if there even was sea urchin) with something else. Double up on tuna or something. My favorite sushi is eel... so I got the eel and avocado sushi. It was drowned in a syrupy sauce that overpowered any flavor the sushi may have. Plus, the sushi was small, and nearly impossible to pick up with chopsticks as it was barely held together. The cucumber salad tasted "dirty". Did they wash the cucumbers??? What gives?Weird, weiiirdddd flavor. Don't waste your time or money folks. This place is overpriced and the service was almost appalling. Oh, did I mention they added items on our check we didn't order, and it took an extra 15 minutes for them to remove those items. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Santa Fe, and favorite Japanese restaurant anywhere. The staff is always super friendly and sweet, and they are fairly efficient, too. The food is absolutely delicious - especially the Vegetable Tempura, mmm - and perfect portions. Lots of options for vegetarians in sushi and non-sushi options. If you get a chance, sit in the "no-shoe" room (I don't know what it's actually called). It's very, very relaxing, even if other people happen to be in there. read more

I came here for lunch after snowshoeing a few weekends ago, it was my friend's 50th bday and she comes here for lunch often. The fish quality was good, and generous portions. We had Agedashe tofu, delicious. Then a few rolls, nigiri, and a Bibimbap veggie bowl - YUM!! Their alternate menu had some other Korean dishes on it that i'm imagining they also do well. Very nice woman server, the sake prices were good also. This is a place I'd like to visit again, they had new tea rooms in the back for a private dining experience, that looked like a perfect party spot. Clean, comfortable and we parked for free (it was Sunday) so that was relatively easy too. Our third friend paid since it was both of our bdays so i'm not sure if it was any more expensive than a normal sushi lunch, but I was very happy with the meal and service. read more

Previous review: I highly recommend this place for 1-2 people. I had the miso ramen with pork. Rich flavor. As far as authenticity- the soup base was what you'd expect but the noodles, egg, vegetables, and meat are not what you'd get in Japan. Nonetheless- it was delicious. Generally pork you'd get would be more tender- but either way the pork was delicious. It was juicy and flavorful. The egg was cooked more than I would expect (usually ramen eggs are gooey). The noodles weren't as flavorful as I'd like- but again- delicious and definitely worth the generous price. The service was friendly and overall a comfortable place to be. To sum it up- not entirely authentic but still very delicious! I'll definitely be going back soon. Updated review: Tried the Nabeyaki Udon and it was DELICIOUS! I would give it a 9/10 for authenticity and a 9/10 for flavor. Definitely the best udon you'll get in New Mexico... 5 stars ;) read more

We brought our 84-year old mother/grandmother to eat here 2 days ago. There is no entrance/exit for disabled or elderly folks. We DID somehow manage to get her up the stairs to enter the restaurant. But as we were leaving , she told us there's no way she could step down. She was afraid. So I asked the woman working at the front (not our server) if we could exit through the side door or another doorway. She told us to use the front entry which still had steps.., then told us to HURRY UP and that we weren't supposed to be using that entrance anyway. She was so snappy and rude it left a bitter taste in our mouths. Very disappointing treatment of a family with elders. We will not return. read more
