We tried Origami in Los Alamos and overall had a good experience. Considering it's the only sushi place in town, the food was actually good and definitely satisfied the sushi craving. We ordered the Agedashi Tofu, Ultimate Salmon Roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll, and all were fresh and tasty. One thing to be aware of is that many of their rolls contain crab sticks, so we asked for those to be removed. I also ordered the Udon soup, but it was much spicier than expected with no warning on the menu, so I had to send it back. Service was just okay since no one checked on us after the food arrived and we had to flag someone down for the check. I normally can't be bothered to write reviews but decided to write one for this place bc I would have passed up this place based on # of reviews if my husb had not chosen this. Once he did, I ordered based on other reviews I read and they're spot on, the sashimi was surprising quality and better than I expected, even given the reviews I had read before ordering. Honestly I would expect it to be pricier given how difficult it must be to import ingredients to this place. The agedashi tofu was done well, the thin skin was crispy and well fried, the sauce it came in light but not lacking in flavor. We also got a bento box and it was quite traditional with the ginger dressing for the salad, I've missed the flavor more than I knew. I don't care for California rolls so have nothing to say about that. The chicken katsu was well made and the katsu sauce was good. The shrimp tempura udon was probably the weakest of the things we ordered but I think the soup had togarashi in it so points for depth. The overall feel very much reminded me of an old favorite from my school days in Houston, a mom and pop shop where staff was literally the mom and pop, pop cooking in the back and mom doing everything else! The wait is long and the service is the best they can do given the understaffing but the food is bomb and that's all that counts to me. So I felt very much at home here. They were full when we arrived 45 min before closing, I was ready to order to go but they made an effort to seat us so I did not mind the wait for the table or the wait for anything else afterwards. I think they were trying to call in help when we arrived but not successful. Still, I would wait however long I need to. Staff was very friendly and even came to apologize for forgetting our waters which I didnt expect bc it was understandable given every table was filled and only 2 guys running back and forth. 10/10 would visit again next time we make a trip to the area! read more

This was my first time having sushi in New Mexico and it was decent. It's located in the heart of Los Alamos and open for dining in. When we arrived, we stood at the door for a few minutes before anyone came over to us, but other than that service was fine. I was a little afraid to try their nigiri and sashimi considering this restaurant is located 2 hours from the nearest major airport, so I stuck with their sushi rolls. Everything was drizzled in a lot of sauce and had a lot of rice, so it's definitely an Americanized sushi spot. My favorite was the Chile Relleno roll because I like cream cheese and green chile. The Santa Fe roll also had green chile in it, but was pretty plain. The pieces were also cut unevenly. I wouldn't recommend the Spider or Dynamite rolls because they were both a little fishy even with all the sauce. We also got an order of Monkey Brains and that is basically a thick layer of fried batter with a dollop of imitation crab and sauce. I didn't taste any mushrooms that it advertised. Overall it was worth a try since I've been craving sushi for months, but I wouldn't come here with high expectations if you've had sushi in bigger cities. Not the best service our waitress would get our orders wrong and forget orders. I don't understand how she didn't notice that not everyone at the table got their plates. It was not a busy night and lots of mistakes were made. Food on the other hand was ok a bit pricey for the quality of food. Also if you want fried rice instead they charge you an extra $5. The price was a bit surprising but it came out in a big bowl that could have possibly been shared with the table. We should have been warned about the size before ordering it. We were served the miso soup and salad with our dinner entrees which came out quickly and were good. Once our main dishes came out they were ok too nothing special or great to brag about. Went there with the my vegetarian friend and the dishes we got exceeds my expectation! I loved the veggie roll and the veggie gyoza. Not a huge fan for my salmon curry though. The meat is kinda dry. Keep in mind that they also have complimentary miso soup and salad, I was way too stuffed after dinner. Miso soup is a tad bit too salty and salad has a tad bit too much dressing on it. I spent an hour this afternoon looking for the best place to eat in Los Alamos and on another site, this has over 200 ratings of 4.6/5, so I thought, "Hmm? Sushi sounds pretty good!" We've been visiting the Santa Fe area for the last three days and have yet to find anything that is really delicious. We got to Origami just as it opened because the reviews said once it gets busy, the service gets slow. Our waiter brought us water and said he could bring a drink menu if we wanted but it only had beer and wine. We ordered the vegetable tempura appetizer, Chile Relleno roll and Santa Fe roll to start. The wait was longish, but not unreasonable. The Chile Relleno roll is HUGE. The pieces are so big and think it takes at least two bites per piece. The flavor was fine, but the rice was definitely uncooked to the point of chewy and the roll fell apart when I bit into it because the paper was so tough. The Santa Fe was ok, nothing special and totally un-memorable. The Vegetable tempura appetizer was nothing short of disappointing. One piece each of sliced potato, carrot, broccoli, green pepper (that looked like celery), an enormous green bean, and onion slice battered and fried. It was completely flavorless, it just tasted like fried. After we had our food, the waiter never came back, a refill of water would have been great, but it wasn't to be. We are from Nebraska, who would have thought that the sushi there is FAR SUPERIOR to the options available here? Honestly, I've come to the conclusion that the people of New Mexico are desperate for a great place to eat because every restaurant we've tried has had rave reviews, but the food is only "meh" at best. I would have given Origami only one star, but it seemed clean and family run, also obviously the locals like it since the take out orders were non-stop. But if you're not from around here, hit the McDonald's or Sonic and at least you'll know what kind of disappointment to expect. read more

The last time I was at Origami's was at the beginning of 2022 and it was a shock to see how much the menu had changed and not for the better. They mostly just had sushi and many of my favorite dishes were gone from the menu including Bimbimbop and a Yakisoba dish. Also, we were the last people eating in the restaurant and it almost felt like they were trying to scurry us out by 1:00pm. Today I wanted to have lunch with my son and family and got to the restaurant at 12:45pm and they said they were closed. What kind of restaurant stops serving lunch before 1pm? I was really disappointed and am not sure I will continue to eat there since I don't feel welcome there anymore and it doesn't feel like they really want to serve the public. read more

I came for lunch earlier today with a good friend who worked in Japan for several weeks out of the year back in the early 2000s. Him, before placing order: "Ooh. I havent had a bento box since Nasu." Him, after receiving order: "I still haven't had a bento box since Nasu." Of course, he meant it half-seriously and thoroughly enjoyed his food, as did I. The tempura batter was light and flaky with perfectly cooked vegetables (a peeve of mine is overly-battered tempura). The teriyaki beef was a bit overdone for my taste, but still edible. The California roll was, as Kramer so eloquently put it, "Like a circus in my mouth!" What can I say, I've been living on Smith's sushi for the past few months out of sheer convenience. The wasabi stood out as being tastier than foodcolored horseradish. The miso soup was tasty and the ginger salad dressing was incredible. I came here once about 7 years ago while at a meeting at LANL, I recall it being decently good. Time has evidently whitewashed that memory since. I went again recently and it was just not good. The service was super slow, almost non existent, starting from the moment I walked in the door and waited close to 5 minutes to be simply greeted (there was no line or anything). Granted it was during lunch hour, but it wasn't THAT busy at the time. On top of that, I overheard a patron at the neighboring table mention that she had some sort of allergy and subsequently observed the sushi chef walk up, give them a roll and ask "is this good enough" and then walk back and scoff and roll her eyes to another employee. The meat in the bento box was the only redeeming quality of this place, it was pretty good. The veggies were overly steamed. The California and Dragon rolls were a solid D on the sushi report card. The California has an overpowering imitation crab taste and the dragon roll was the same with just a razor thin sliver of eel on top. A little pricey (comparable to Santa Fe not ABQ) but still good enough to be five star for being land locked and at the top of a mountain in a high earning county in New Mexico. Everytime you walk in, order the heart attack on sitting down! Tempura jalapeno with spicy sauce and cream cheese. I always recommend the bento box too as you get the best of both worlds with some sushi and some entrees. Salad topped with peanut sauce in the box, and tofu soup for sides come along with the experience. I got beef bulgogi the last time I went and the bento box comes at a price of $12-$14 bucks. I had lunch here last Friday with my husband and a lovely couple we just met. I would like to try other things on their menu, the prices were right and the location was good. I had two orders nigiri (salmon and hamachi), edemame, and a yummy cooked roll with hamachi on the outside. Our lunch was $52 with a tip for the two of us. I think hubby got the Bento box, now I can't remember... Our friends had some nigiri, a few rolls and veggie tempura app, which looked really good. The place was CROWDED, we were lucky we had a reservation as there was not a seat in the house at 1pm on Friday. They were understaffed for their volume, our server was working hard but unable to keep up. I think we got better service because our friends were regulars, otherwise I probably would have been unhappy with the service. More on this when I have time to explore what else they have to offer, we will be back here for sure, hopefully during a quieter time so we can sit at the bar and order omakase. I really like Origami. For sushi all the way up on a mesa, it's pretty good. Also, their menu is more than just sushi, which makes it excellent if not everyone in your group wants sushi. My adventurous grand daughter Emily was at it again! Last year she wanted to take us to the atomic city itself, and skate at the outdoor rink!! When I was younger I was a figure skater, Steve never got into it. After the icy fun, we were just going to go eat at the McDonalds. But she insisted we try somewhere new and local. At first I thought she meant to make the paper craft when she suggested origami. But no, it's a restaurant! It was yummy Japanese sushi and noodles I suggest the "udon" stir fry it is delicious. I have been eating here since they opened back in the early 2000s(?) I have had some amazing experiences here. Giant sushi boats, surprise this, surprise that. Yes, I paid more here at times but it was worth it. The owner is amazing and has always treated me like family (we have our own chopsticks). I have had sushi at many places and yet this will always be my favorite. I will say, however, that you might get a new waitress that needs to be spanked. Like any restaurant in Los Alamos, they suffer from the lack available good help. But I would not count off for that. Its just how it is up here. No help at the restaurants. read more

Small, nice establishment, Origami is accommodating to family style eating. Frequently, they even bring an extra miso soup free of charge, so that everyone can have one. The soup comes with the entrees, so it's nice of them to provide an extra if you have one less entree than person. Tempura is crisp, and not overwhelmed with batter. There's a nice variety of dishes, and combination plates in case you want a little of everything. The menu also contains a few Korean dishes. Dolsot bibimbap, a mixed rice dish comes in a scorching hot stone pot and cooks at the table. Some of their meat dishes are more Korean influenced than Japanese. Their Spicy BBQ Pork dish is essentially Korean daeji bulgogi. As a small restaurant in Los Alamos, you'd want to avoid the busiest hours.
