However, the experience was disappointing from the start. Upon arrival, the manager treated us as if we were walk-ins without a reservation and completely dismissed the information we were given over the phone stating "they'd handle the host who told us it'd be fine". Once seated, as previous calls indicated we should do, we placed our order immediately and clarified that three of us needed to leave by 12:40 PM for our appointments. By 12:45 PM, everyone had finished eating except for two people- our guest of honor and a pregnant party member- whose food still hadn't arrived despite asking if it'd be arriving soon (around 1235). When we inquired (around 1250) the server admitted they had accidentally given their dish (steak bimbibap) to another table and would have to remake it. By 1:20 PM, after the rest of our party had already left for the spa, the missing meal still hadn't arrived except for one person who was waiting to receive it. When staff finally brought out the meal- they placed it on the table (empty of people) and someone who was clearing the table accidentally threw dirty napkins directly onto the plate. They offered to remake it once more to go and removed that single dish from our bill. but the replacement steak bibimbap was extremely bland and the steak mostly fat. Throughout this entire experience, no one offered an apology; instead, the staff made us feel like we were at fault despite our planning and communication. While the spa management was kind enough to offer us a discount after hearing what happened, I cannot recommend this restaurant given the service, lack of accountability, and food quality.

Everyone was happy with their meal choices, though I don't actually remember exactly what I ordered. Our food was delivered in good time, and we mostly caught up on family news while eating. Service was on top of things, as we were out in the main dining area, next to the sushi bar. A few weeks later, the girls requested we go there for their 16th birthday, a family celebration. We reserved a table for 9, and were seated in the very back of the restaurant, past the tatami rooms. Unfortunately, even though it was a Wednesday evening with not many patrons on hand and a 6:30 reservation, service was glacial. It was a full fifteen minutes before we were served water, and another ten minutes before anyone came for our orders. The drink orders came out sporadically and incompletely, and then our food started arriving in very unpredictable bursts. My beef teriyaki was served early on, but it was overcooked and difficult to eat with only chopsticks. The twins ordered noodle soups and sushi, and were very happy with their choices. Their grandfather, visiting from the Midwest, eventually had to get up and go inquire with the kitchen about his missing food order. In all, it took about 40 minutes for everyone to be served. Splitting the bill at the end turned out to be another ordeal, since they don't seem to have trained people on the cash register and we had to wait for a manager to help out. I know it's very difficult to get good restaurant help in these times. But there are some very basic rules of hospitality, and on this occasion Kohnami didn't manage to adhere to them. We're not writing them off, but we'll think twice about returning since Santa Fe is a gourmand's paradise.

I miss foie gras. Unfortunately, it's banned in California. They had a 2023 Sea Smoke "Ten"Pi ot Noir on the wine list. This is one of the best Pinot Noirs produced in California and not easy to find. This was a no doubter and we ordered a bottle to pair with our entrees. My wife ordered their signature elk tenderloin for redemption because the restaurant the night before failed at executing this. I ordered the tomahawk pork chop. This was cooked to perfection with a nice thin crust on the outside and a perfect very light pink juicy center. We ordered a side of brocolini that was pan roasted with shallots and butter. Everything was very good and Michelin grade in our opinion. Lastly we ended the evening and split the tiramasu type of desert. He was warm and seemed to take a general interest in us. I shared my concerns with him that my pallet doesn't tolerate much spicy. He at all. He assured me there would be no problem in accommodating that. He started us off with a complementary prickly pear & lemonade drink which we loved! He also provided a complementary appetizer which was very unique and made out of avocado and mascarpone and some other items I don't remember. Why I didn't love it, I did enjoy hasting something so unique and different. We started with the best cornbread I've ever had that shaped like a cob of corn with three different kinds of butters. The cornbread is $12 and worth it! Next came the Caesar salad wrapped in some kind of egg roll wrapper and topped with an anchovy mixture. We split it so we each got two rolls which was plenty. We very much enjoyed the flavors in the salad. Don ordered the Wagyu short rib with polenta. While we don't love polenta, this was tasty and complemented the beef nicely. Don said this was the best short rib he ever had. I wish I had a picture of how they presented it. When they took the lid off, there was a lovely steam cloud and it smelled wonderful. I had scallops with each one placed beautifully on top of of really interesting wild rice and finished with toasted coconut. The pineapple salsa and the Hoja Santa Fe Oil were placed in small rounds in the middle of the dish because they had some kick to them. What was especially impressive, is the gentleman who brought out my meal leaned over and said that the Chef wanted to let me know that the two items in the small dishes had heat to them, but I was encouraged to give them a try for the full flavor. Impressive! I was able to enjoy the pineapple salsa, but the oil was a little too spicy for me, but I'm glad I tried it. We would've loved to try dessert, but we were fully satiated by our delicious meal. It was quite an experience and we look forward to returning.
