This place is amazing. The atmosphere is the first stop and by that alone, you know you are going to get good service and tasty food. I came in looking for udon soup and saw that they offered it. I ended up getting the baked muscles as well and boy am I glad I did so. They were delicious. The udon soup was so tasty and it came with some kind of deep fried shrimp on the side with sauce for dripping. My server was attentive and made sure to check on me for my drink refill and just to see if I needed anything else. I love this place and will be back anytime I am in Santa Fe. read more

We came here on a Saturday around lunch time and were quickly sat. The service was prompt and friendly. We ordered two sodas, habachi chicken entree, gyoza, a California roll, and a Japanese crepe cake. The habachi comes with soup and a salad. The soup was delicious and I loved the addition of the onions. The gyoza was so good and the California roll was well balanced. The habachi chicken and fried rice was very good and of course I had more than enough to take home. We finished it off with the crepe cake which was a fun experience and tasted delightful. The area is quite and calm. Everything was peaceful and even though there was a large group it didn't feel crowded or loud. We are so glad we came here. read more

This place has been here for years (a good sign), we ate with a group of eight last night, and we were all pleased. My wife and I split the Triple Delight Sashimi, photo uploaded: you can see the rather large pieces of Tuna, Salmon, and Yellowtail, plus a bowl Of White Rice and nice Miso soup. All very good Sashimi, the Yellowtail was outstanding. We also split the Dynamite Roll, which was very nice. In the future, we will go for more Sashimi. The triple delight is $27.99, and considering the size and number of slices, we felt this was well priced. The service was pretty good, and all the food arrived at the same time for a large table. With two iced teas, just under $50 ($25 per) for good sushi is, in our opinion, reasonable. Overall, 4.5 stars. read more

Didnt take good pictures but I ordered takeout for lunch on a Sunday. Quick service and nice employees. I got the teriyaki salmon bento plate with miso soup, gyoza and 6 california rolls, it also came with steamed white rice and a side salad with a house dressing. I also ordered a separate order of sushi rolls. (Not pictured) You have the option of gyoza or edamame. The salmon was cooked nicely, the skin was crispy and the meat itself was still moist. It was served over a bed of steamed broccoli and one slice of carrot. The gyoza came with a dipping sauce. Which was good. The California rolls were filled nicely, the sushi rice was a little dry, as well as the wasabi, was a little dry. There was no soy sauce given to me, so I had to eat it dry. The steamed rice was also a little dry but it was good. The side salad was actually good with the house dressing. The miso soup was flavorful although I only recieved 3 small pieces of tofu, a little more would've been nice. It had seaweed which provided good flavor. My other order of sushi was the rainbow rolls, which came with an assortment of fish on top. It had avocado salmon, tuna, and another white fish, not sure what it was... it was good. Again the rice was a bit dry and no soy sauce was given for the wasabi. The ginger was loaded and flavorful which I enjoy. The fish was flavorful, the white fish was a little dry, the salmon didnt have much a salmon flavor but was moist and good. The tuna was the most flavorful. I would eat there again and try another bento box and another type of sushi roll. read more

For some reason all the surrounding Asian stores ran out of food like Pho Ava which was kind of crazy, so this was my only choice. All I can say is this is the type of Asian food you would expect from a place like Santa Fe which probably doesn't have the biggest east Asian population. At least the service is pretty quick especially if you do take out. I ordered the Chicken Nabeyaki Udon which came with two tempura shrimps. The tempura was too thick and you couldn't really taste the shrimp. As for the udon itself, the broth felt like it came directly from a store-bought chicken stock which is fine. The chicken though lacked flavor and the udon noodles disintegrate into your mouth before you even chew on them. Would not recommend it. Not sure if I would recommend coming here. Really nice decor and plenty of seating for large groups. The service was polite and accommodating. The sushi chef was very nice and answered all our questions while he worked with a smile. We ordered lots of sushi ala cart and everything we had was delicious and largely portioned. The chef even gave us a sushi pizza to try and it was delicious. Lunch time...plenty of parking in the normally crowded parking lot...a clue Very few diners in the place...another clue Perfunctory service by a non English speaking Asian guy, I had to ask for a menu and water. No utensils on the table...had to ask after my salad came. Ordered the Hibachi Salmon lunch. Prep was good but the salmon portion was meager, luckily I'd already ordered a California roll on the side. No further service except for my bill which was left on the other side of the table out of arms reach. I based my tip on the service and to an extent, the laughably small Salmon portion. The restaurant used to be much better at all of this. They've had much better service in the past and much larger food portions. I don't enjoy writing reviews like this but I try for honesty. read more

Located right across the street from our hotel (El Rey), thought why not. It was a great choice. The menu had so many choices. There was something for everyone. We shared the sushi and sashimi for two and added a few more rolls. Great flavor and a good feeling of freshness. I know that is hard to pull off at a sushi place in New Mexico, but they did. It was moderately busy, so service was a little slow. Worth the wait when the food arrived. Nothing special with the ambiance, but the food presentation on the boat was very cool. We will return next time we are in Santa Fe. read more

We came in on a Saturday and waited a bit before being acknowledged or sat down. It did seem busy, but I only saw one waiter juggling all the tables. We ordered several rolls that were pretty good. I wished they were a bit more flavorful, but we ate all of them. We felt like they should be a but bigger, especially the lobster roll. It was more expensive (of course) but came with only 5 pieces. The lobster did seem a bit overcooked, but there was so little of it in the roll it was hard to tell. The waiter who served us was friendly. Decent location, nice decor, and ok Japanese food. My jasmine tea was flavorful and aromatic, it was also presented in a nice heavy small pot and a nice cup, for appetizer we ordered takoyaki and stuff pepper - the takoyaki was ok, was soft outside and mushy, barely there minced octopus and my main course was shrimp and scallops hibachi combo was serve in a nice big plate, food was sad looking and taste was sadder. Redeeming value is the place is tastefully decorated and the stuff pepper was good. read more

I'm only sad that I can't give more than 5 stars. I'm also glad I didn't look at the prior reviews before giving Tokyo Cafe a try, if I had, I may have missed my single best sushi experience in Santa Fe! The outside of the restaurant doesn't look like much, but the interior is all smooth, clean, stark lines, dark wood and white walls, but I only saw it briefly going in for my to-go order. The online ordering platform is simple and user friendly, a real plus since we were adventuring around the crazy streets of Santa Fe deciding what to try. Now to the 5-stars: Star 5 starts with an innovative section of the menu called "low calorie rolls" these are options with very light sauces, very little, if any, rice, and ingenious use of non-standard items to wrap contents. No, this is not "traditional" sushi by any means. This is a revolution in approachable healthy food that's filling, satisfying, easy to eat, and extremely tasty. Raz ordered: Rainbow Naruto Roll -- 3 super fresh fishes wrapped in bright, refreshing cucumber Green River Roll -- more ball than roll, creamy avocado enclosing subtle spicy tuna Going for the less good-for-me option, I got an Angel's Wing Roll from the signature menu. I have never had anything like it. Not only was the presentation stellar, but the flavor combination was downright sinfully delicious. We finished up with 2 appetizers: New Zealand mussels which I'm simply not poetic enough to describe because it was like the sea aflame with chile, only subtle and creamy... New Mexico Starfish which isn't a star when you order it take-out, but that doesn't matter because mild jalapenos are the perfect vessels for serving avocado and crab. The tempura breading was very light and crisp, making this the most unique jalapeno popper I've had in years! We will definitely be going back the next time we're hungry in Santa Fe! read more

Visiting Santa Fe and after a trip to Meow Wolf, I came across Japanese Cafe on my way back to the hotel. I decided to stop for lunch. I was the first one there for lunch and got a booth all to myself, which was nice. The waitress noticed I wasn't in a rush, so she gave me ample time to look at the menu. There's quite a lot of options ranging from hibachi and bento boxes to sushi and fried rice. I opted for two sushi rolls, the Sakura and a classic rainbow. It took a while for the rolls to come out of the kitchen, but seeing as I wasn't in a rush, I didn't mind. When they arrived, the first thing I noticed is that the rainbow roll, although only a dollar cheaper than the Sakura, was substantially smaller in size. Bit disappointing. The Sakura roll was the size it should be and also tasted great. Usually when I order two rolls somewhere, I feel stuffed; but this time I could have probably fit another one of their rainbow rolls in lol. Overall, I had a good experience and I would come back here to try some of their other foods if I ever get the chance. But sushi rolls that are of a similar type shouldn't vary so much in size. read more

My husband and I wouldn't really recommend this place. The food is good, can't deny that, but the service was lacking. The waiter was a bit short with us and would rush my husband. He also brought my husband one type of soda when he had asked for a different kind. While the prices are cheaper, the portions do reflect that. Neither of us were really able to enjoy the atmosphere of the red, but that's through no fault of their own. Had lunch there a couple weeks ago based on a recommend from a friend. Walked in to the strong smell of cleaning solution (should have left then). Nice ambience and decent service. But almost $3 for a cup of green tea -- one tea bag in lukewarm water?!?! Gave us the wrong appetizer (that was pretty good, though). I moved to SF recently from California where I ate a LOT of sushi. And I've been to Japan twice just for the food. I know I'm sounding snobby but, if you are looking for the real thing this is NOT your place. The rice with the nigiri was weirdly dense and chewy (leftover?). While visiting Santa Fe this past few days we were able to enjoy a few restaurant choices and Tokyo Cafe was one of the choices. Tokyo Cafe is a quaint, clean and comfortable restaurant. We were welcomed by our waitress who was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the Mango Lobster Roll and the West Texas Rolls (Tempura Shrimp. Avocado, Jalapeno and Cream Cheese). Both were delicious, however, the West Texas roll was spectacular! This restaurant was also very modestly priced. Great choice to give a try. Glad we did and will be back. read more

Wow! I just discovered them yesterday and THAT is my spot! Blown away with everything...the sashimi for 2 - the freshest sushi in SF and the rolls weren't full of rice, more goods than rice. The fried rice was the best I've ever had in SF, not greasy as I'm used to, fresh veggies, clean AND it didn't taste like cooking gas.
