Hub, his mom, and I had dinner here recently. Color me unimpressed. I had high hopes for Klondike Kate's on finding out the same folks who own and run La Casa Pasta and The Chesapeake Inn took over. I found out it is the same old -- what's a nice way to put this -- shabby bar it was the last time I ate here (about 10 years ago.) The food was decent, thus three stars, but the atmosphere is not my cup of tea. I had the Flank Steak which was "... rolled & stuffed with peppers, spinach, blue cheese crumbles & herb garlic butter", and a side of seasonal vegetables. It was just ok. It was not cooked to my specs: medium. It arrived prepared much closer to rare. Suffice it to say, I was disappointed. Hub had a burger and a Yuengling draft, so he was pleased. Mom-in-law had the Santa Fe salad as was also happy with her choice. Both the burger and the salad looked appetizing; I definitely had plate envy. Overall, I was largely unimpressed. It was an experience I don't wish to repeat. If you don't mind dining in a college-town bar with all its attendant ambience (dated decor, lots of sports on tv, frat bar vibe, etc.) then this place might fill that bill. I always take someone here if they are visiting. It's a good spot for a quick drink or a good family dinner. I do find a long wait on weekends, and end up heading to iron hill across the street instead. I love when they have a dj upstairs on weekends. read more

My family and I have been going to Klondike Kate's for as long as I can remember. The nachos were our favorite part and would look forward to half priced tuesdays! We have noticed a rapid decrease in the quality and quantity of the food ever since new management has taken over. We even started going when nachos weren't full price in hopes they were just skimping out due to the half price special..... nope the nachos ARE STILL SO BAD now! They are so beyond greasy & NEVER have cheese. Each time we go in hopes they'll be as yummy as they once were.... but it's always a let down. My family has recently decided to not go back to this restaurant due to the poor quality of the food.... sorry kates but you just lost loyal customers and I know you've lost many others.... Kate's use to be spoken about so highly by locals, now all I hear is negative reviews about this once popular Delaware restaurant. Waitress was busy with other tables so ignored us most of the night. I ordered the full rack of ribs but only ate a quarter of them, as they were fatty and full of ligaments. Also ordered sour kraut, it came out cold and with no seasoning, literally out of the bag. Others ordered burgers and fries, they were soggy and the fries were cold. We asked for ketchup for the fries, it never came until we complained about the poor service 40 minutes later. They ended up giving us a 15% discount, unfortunately I have to give 1 star due to the horrible food and service. read more

I went to this restaurant with a large group of friends for half price nacho night. My friend got a mixed drink solely because it was half price, and ended up paying a whopping 8 bucks for a shot of cheap alcohol and hella ice. The nachos were nothing special, and the same friend found a lovely curly hair in hers (it might have been hers though). Nice little college town bar. We stopped in for a few apps and drinks. While waiting for our beer I noticed that on the bar top they have beer glasses that are filled with complimentary Chex Mix style snacks. I was surprised how many people didn't think twice about placing their hands into these glasses to grab these snacks....... not very sanitary, they should have some sort of spoon/scoop. (many bars in certain states no longer allow this). ....... To each his own..... Anyway, we had a few Samuel Adams Summer Ales. We had the seared/blackened Ahi Tuna Bites with wasabi ranch dressing. We also had the Mediterranean chic pea hummus and grilled artichoke/tomato bruschetta with toasted panini pita plate. Both apps were good. The bartender was cool. The prices were reasonable. I keep trying to like this place, and it just keeps letting me down. The most recent venture was for brunch on a Sunday. We got the tuna bites (or something like that) for an appetizer, which were okay but not worth the price. I ordered the fish tacos and my girlfriend ordered a steak salad. Fish tacos weren't bad but they weren't too good either. Nothing to write home about...definitely had better. The problem was the rice and refried beans that came with it. The beans were so dry, paste-like, and looked like they were right out of a can. The rice was dry and generic looking. Terrible...eating the beans was like eating a brown clump of sand. The steak on the salad was a disgrace. Chewy, dry, grilled to oblivion, and just not good looking steak. They also forgot the black beans on the salad. The service there was poor too. The waiter was confused and wouldn't refill my water. My girlfriend and I decided to never eat here again. Other food ventures: I've had the breakfast burrito...not good. It also comes with the beans...terrible. I've had a burger....soggy, but I ate it and took a quick shower when I got home. The only good food items I've had are the boneless wings and the nachos, but I rarely order these items or order them only if there is a large group. Bar scene: Don't even think about it. Delicious! Great restaurant with hard working and kind employees. The food is superb and there is a deal every day! Mondays- 1/2 price burgers, Tuesdays- 1/2 price nachos, Wednesdays- 1/2 prices sandwiches and salads until 4 PM, then 1/2 price kid's meals from 4:00 PM-close, Thursdays- 1/2 price wings, Fridays- 1/2 price salads/ sandwiches, Saturdays- half price steak, Sundays- half price entrees. Great service and stellar food. There is no comparison between Klondike's and Iron Hill Brewery, its rival. Klondike Kate's food is much better than Iron Hill's as well as cheaper, and the atmosphere is one of a kind. Most people think that Iron Hill is more upscale than Klondikes, but this is not true. Klondike's entree menu is far better than Iron Hill's and the prices are so much more reasonable. Many people complain about how noisy and boring the atmosphere is at Klondike's. They have added on a secluded area where you can eat at by request. If you're in the mood for classy food, go on a Sunday, eat in the secluded, back area, and order an entree. Very sad that I have to downgrade a review of a place I loved at one point. However, the quality of service in my 4 years on campus has gone down considerably. Second, the deals that keep college kids feed for an appropriate price are all but lies with the newly acquired take out fee*. Oh and you think they would make you aware of such a price change? NOPE, roll up to receive my normal Thursday wings and see an additional dollar charge, the reasoning is from a bar tender; "we weren't making enough money to cover the deals" simply put we found a way to extort college students out of more money. Well I hope you enjoy you 10% fee on take out, as much as you enjoy loss of business and lowering of reviews. I would never go to this place again it was my first and my last. Me and friends went out and celebrated a friends birthday. We got searched they checked our bags and we paid. about an hour into it two security guards approached us and asked us to step outside for a sec and then proceeded to tell us we had to leave cause the bartender supposedly saw us drinking outside liquor we all we did was put chapstick on we told them to search our bag and you can check where we was at to see if there was any liquor but they refused even "supposedly" talked to a manager and they wouldn't even do anything about it. We paid for liquor the whole time we was there. They are rude and have to worst customer service. And the bartenders are trash. If you go there don't go into your purse cause they might mistake you for bringing outside liquor. Oh and they use their hands to get your garnish for your drinks too which is nasty they've been touching dirty money and cards all day. read more

It's your typical college hangout. I graduated a couple of years ago and Kate's is always on the agenda whenever I come back to visit. Their nachos are really really good. I went tonight with 8 people. I have to say i wasn't impressed. Service was slow. They were packed however so they do a good business regardless. I sure wouldn't wait to eat here though. For appetizers we had the pretzels, nachos and cheesesteak egg rolls. The pretzels were good, the nachos were decent and the egg rolls were terrible. Went once a few years ago and the food was mediocre, went about a month ago since I heard they were under new ownership & the food was better; but still not the best I've ever had. This is a great place to grab a drink and food on main street. I went in on a Monday and they were having Quizzo. I sat at the bar and were treated very well by josh and Alexa the two bartenders on shift. With a full bar they were very quick with not only handling service for the whole restaurant, but also making sure the people at the bar were happy. The first time I attempted to go here was on homecoming day after the game. Boy, was it packed! From the outside I could see people crammed against each other in the windows; the front patio had people spilling over, down the stairs and to the sidewalk. My immediate though about that was "Onto the next place!". Today I had the opportunity to go back for some drinks and some appetizers. Since it was after 10 on Sunday the appetizers were half off until 2. I had the French onion soup and it was great for a cold day like today. I also had the buffalo wings which were really good and flavorful, but for my taste they lacked a little when it came to the spice department. I'm not a frat boy (Never even went to U of D), I don't drink too much, I've gone during regular dinner hours and my expectations on any place are more than decent (being acknowledged, cleanliness); despite that (!), I still manage to have a kick ass time here, every time. Maybe it's just because I hang out with Carl and Patty. The Chicken Sanchez and the crab cakes (of course) are awesome. The Chesapeake Chicken is amazing! The vibe is good and pretentions are low. We were told a half hour wait which turned out to be a 1 hr and 10 min wait. We were seated by the door and we were absolutely freezing. After sitting for 15 mins, I had to ask where our server is. We ended getting a different serving because our server was "MIA". Hostess apologized but after a long wait and the server being "MIA", we weren't so happy. The male server who took over was a gentleman. He got our food and drinks out quickly because he felt bad. The nachos were great but the chicken pesto sandwich was awful. The chicken was burnt and there was pesto overload. I had two bites of my food and just ate the fries. Everyone else's food was just ok- none of us finished our meal or ate too much of it. Cool old pub feeling extensive menu with more diversity than you might normally find I a college town pub. It was recommended by our tour guide at U of Del who said it's a fun place to hang out. You can definitely feel comfortable here and share laughs and a few pints with friends. If you are a spicy burger fan try the Cowboy Burger. Really good beef cooked just right topped with homemade chili and jalpapeno's. Stopped here for lunch today, we were in town to buy a new car. The decor is great inside and it seemed like a great hometown bar. Hubby and I split the coconut shrimp app which was just ok, i think they need to clean out their fryer or something. I had a turkey club with tater tots... Mmm tots! My husband had some sandwich with meatloaf and other meats, it was pretty good but alittle greasy for me. This "saloon"-style restaurant seems to be always full of people. I don't really know why. The food prices are standard, and the dishes are HUGE. But that's no use if the food does not taste good. Went last Monday with my daughter and her best friend for lunch. They have a special of half prices salads and sandwiches on Mondays. We chose to sit outside since the weather was great and sunny. Alright fine. Out of years of sordid spit-hatery upon this saloon of sloppy college drunks dizzy from Buds and 90s nights, I've given in to actually looking forward to Tuesdays. Kate's isn't all that bad if you go there around 7:30pm for any of the specials. --ignoring the fact that I actually started the New Year here, I'm still not sure how that happened-- The loud pounding 80s/90s/Foreigner crap hasn't started, and the skan--ahem--chicks haven't found themselves smashed yet, ready to pounce into the next male wallet. It's smooth sailing, drinking, and noshing that early. The hockey game is usually on upstairs, too, which is why I politely ask to be sat up there if the game is on. As far as service goes, just take your $5 tab and be glad that's all you have to pay for nachos and a pitcher. The staff is usually pissed they had to show up because, for a plate of nachos and a pitcher to a rowdy table, they might make $3. Been in and out of this place for over 25 years, and it's just as consistent as always. 10 of us with kids had dinner here and they stuck us upstairs in our own room with a dedicated server. The hostess handled us great, which is hard to find in a college town employing mostly kids that don't think. Service was great, the nachos big and tasty, and everyone liked their entree.
