This place is more than just a place for a drink or two, it can get louder in the second floor and when the university is on its more than just loud. Honestly I've not tasted their menu much so don't have an opinion on that. read more

I've lived in Newark my entire life, and I probably have gone to Klondike's around 250 times. I've lived roughly 900 weeks, and saying (conservatively) that I've gone here once a month my whole life, it comes out close to 250 visits. Having been here so much, I was tempted to only give it 4 stars because it's a matter of "been there, done that" to me, but the place is really good. I've probably tried 75% of the items on the menu, and you can't go wrong with any of them. The nachos and wings are my favorites, but they also have some great entrees, like the penne alla vodka. Smokers- don't waste money on a lighter, Klondike's has free matches (or better yet- don't smoke you hedonistic pig). Go to KK, it's the heart of Main Street. Cheaper than Iron Hill Brewery and has better food than Deer Park. read more

Everything went well except the small security guard with the bicep tattoo got mad that our gay friend wanted nothing to do with her! he singled her out and said she was smoking inside although there are no posted no smoking signs and instead of waning her he put his hands on her and called her a bitch and told her she had no choice. I've been to this restaurant twice, and Ohhhh Emmmmm Gheeeee!!!! Apparently I made "O" faces and noises with each bite of Mom's Meatloaf... I couldn't get enough of it. The meat was juicy and tasty, the taters..... oh the taters... and I don't like cooked carrots, but yeah, I'm a fan now! The restaurant is fun, the waiters were very nice. The price was just right. Went here for lunch with a friend and we had their hot boneless wings. We were sitted right away and the waitress was very attentative with our drinks and getting our order. The wings were very good and had a nice crispiness to them. The fries weren't anything great and were lacking salt and overall flavor. You can tell they just came out of a bag. I would go back for lunch again, nothing outstanding but good for a quick bite. read more

Although the place was not super crowded it took nearly an hour to get our food, and within that hour our waitress only checked in twice. Returned to U of D with my 13 year old daughter for Sunday brunch at Kate's. Hadn't been on campus since graduating in 1988!! Main st. is a bit different--missing the Stone Balloon... My Chesapeake benedict was rich, filling and quite yummy. Rebecca had a chicken caesar wrap that she enjoyed. The bloody mary was also good and quite strong. Kate's caters to the needs of he college crowd, so don't expect anything extravagant on the menu. The place has a nice outdoor seating area and plenty of room inside for those hot or rainy days. Food quality is a bit inconsistent and the beer selection is run-of-the-mill. Service can be slow. This is a good place for a lunch, as long as you are in no rush. read more

The place was packed ("20 min wait"= an hour)- but I have no clue why everyone was there. It was FREEZING inside- both the air and the food which took forever to arrive at our table. The Caprese sandwich has a SLIVER of mozzarella and a sliver Of tomato and was super soggy over use of balsamic vinegar. My daughters "black bean " burger was gross. Hard as a rock black pellets and the whole thing fell apart. The meat eaters did better with mediocre ribs and a pretty good salmon. My advice is to keep walkin- PLENTY of other fish in the sea. read more

I'd say zero stars if i could, the service I had last night was TERRIBLE. Myself & my friends were coming in expecting to give our server an 100 dollar tip because we're all servers & understand what it's like. But truthfully, I could've served a table better with my legs tied, eyes closed & hands tied behind my back because at least I still wouldn't have had such a DISGUSTING attitude. We were a ten top with a reservation for my best friends birthday, & i just feel as though maybe she had prejudged our table or maybe she's just always this terrible of a server who knows. I wish i remembered her name & maybe i would've if she had stayed at our table for more than 2 minutes at a time & then ran to the back for at least 30 minutes each time too. When asking about drinks we asked about the margaritas & which ones she could recommend & her response was literally "uhm... so we have like ... rail margaritas.... they're all the same tequila it's just different flavors of each one... so like yea" . As a server, i had to laugh at that cause we just gave her the opportunity to upsell & she fumbled the bag. Next, whenever we asked for another drink or even plates or napkins, it would take her AT LEAST 30 minutes to return from the back if it was even her bringing it to us because she kept sending the other servers or bus boys to bring us things because she obviously knew she wasn't doing a good job. This happened MULTIPLE times. She served my friends 3 drinks each (with a total of maybe 1.75% alcohol content in each one, like literally 3 oz of alcohol) in the span of 2 hours then proceeded to tell them she served them enough in the hour. As if she didn't take a whole hour almost in between each drink. It was clear she was doing this to spite us because we were obviously fet up with how terrible she was. Then when it was time for our check we had to wait another 30-45 minutes before we got that. We even still tipped her more than she deserved because were good people but honestly she doesn't even deserve a job. She has brown/black hair & was the closing server last night. Usually your closing server is your best server, it was comedic how bad she was at her job though. Hopefully next time we decide to come in we don't see her working there lol. Truthfully, maybe she'd be better as a host... MAYBE. Definitely needs more training & an attitude adjustment. Please share this with her. read more

Went for dinner with 5 adults and 1 kid. Service was incredibly slow. Had to ask hostess to get server for us and manager had to help out as well. Turkey burger was made of like pressed meat - something you would get at McDonald's. Hot wings were good. Kids spaghetti had about a teaspoon of sauce on it, mostly just plain noodles. Kate's has been a staple of Newark for years. It has always been good, but has gotten even better over the past year or so. Staff is friendly and attentive. Food is consistently good. They've recently expanded their menu. Mondays are 1/2 priced burgers, and they've added about 1/2 dozen unique combinations. You'll find something you like. Tuesdays are 1/2 price nachos - come early, because the place is always packed. They've added new combinations here - buffalo chicken, cheese steak, seafood - etc. All good. Not fancy, but comfortable, and keeps bringing folks back. read more

I visit main street very often, mainly because of the variety of food. Everytime I make a visit to main street I'm extremely please; however, I can not make that same note for my visit to Klondike Kate's. The atmosphere of the bar is very relaxed and has a fun pub feel to it which was a plus but the behavior of the waitstaff is disgusting and the management is extremely rude. I was seated outside the kitchen entrance, and witnessed a few alarming things. I watched a manage go back and forth from the dinning area to the kitchen while eating. And then I seen a waitress go into her shorts and scratch her hindquarters. When I told the male manager that I wanted to pay for my drinks and leave, he argued with me and tried to pressure me to stay and wait for my food. When I told him why I was leaving (his unsanitary waitstaff), he retrieved my check and threw it at me without saying anything. This place has potential but its just sloppy. We went for lunch. Atmosphere was normal college type bar restaurant, with quiet, modern music in the background. Service was friendly and timely without being intrusive. Food came out after about 30 minutes, probably average timetable. Appetizer was a pretzel with cheese sauce. Cheese sauce was a bit bland, no bite. Pretzels were cooked correctly, Coated in butter. I had a steak with crab imperial. The steak was cooked correctly, seasoning nothing to write home about. Crab Imperial topping tasted ok, but was a bit mushy for my taste. I requested an exchange of broccoli instead of zucchini--the broccoli was cooked correctly, but was unseasoned. The mashed potatoes were also a bit bland. Wife had the Chicken Salad. Portion was large, Chicken was basically deep fried chicken strips, uncut. My wife thought the chicken was overcooked and dry, and there did not seem to be enough lettuce in the salad. She left about half, and did not take the leftover home. About 20 minutes after leaving, we were shopping in a store by the restaurant, but we both feeling ill and decided to go home. The only thing we commonly ate was the pretzel dish, but we were both stomach sick the rest of the day. **BANQUET REVIEW ONLY** My fiance and I had our engagement party in the Rockwell Room upstairs on Sunday, 7/28/13. I had never been in that room before and it was smaller than I had hoped. We did a buffet style dinner and the fact that we had 25 people in the room didn't help but that's nobody's fault. The banquet manager, Lizette, was very helpful throughout the initial process. She was basically cool with whatever decorations we wanted to use. We also hooked up our Wii after dinner to occupy 3 of the kids there. We were able to hook up our iPod to play our own music. Our server for the night was the best..he was professional, courteous and really cool. The food wasn't anything to write home about but it was good. We offered our guests a limited bar and one of the drinks we offered was the Orange Crush. They were amazing and a big hit! I would recommend this place for maybe a smaller party or a sit-down style dinner instead of a buffet. read more

This review is for catering services. I knew the food was good at Klondike Kate's. Their close proximity to the venue (Historic Sinking Springs in Elkton, MD) for my wedding and reception led me to inquire about their catering services. The entire process for a stressed bride-to-be on a budget, from arranging the menu, finding a bakery for us, taste tests and creation of a dish not on their regular catering menu was amazing. Lizette helped make every step easy and contributed some great ideas to what was a very non-traditional day. First, the food. OMG! the hors d'oeuvres. If you never eat anything else from here, I beg you, go now, get the spring rolls. The hummus was to die for. One of our guests is a vegetarian and he said it was the best he had ever eaten. Mouthwatering roast beef, crisp grilled asparagus, roasted potatoes. Everything was sensational. But the clear and undisputed hit of the meal was the soup - kindly created at our request - Butternut Squash. Smooth, creamy, just the right hint of spices, topped with roasted pumpkin seeds. TO DIE FOR!!! We did not want a traditional wedding cake. We had just about given up finding pies we liked and were thinking "crap, we have to get a wedding cake." Lizette found a bakery for us and arranged a taste test. The pies were splendid and everyone at the reception loved them - cherry (groom's favorite), apple, pumpkin and coconut cream (bride's favorite). All perfect for a "Fall in Love" themed wedding. As superb as the food was, the service was even better. Lizette visited the venue ahead of time. It is a lovely rustic location which presented some challenges. The staff showed up the night before to do preliminary set up (and provide a tantalizing sample of the soup to the bride and groom). My wedding party was there setting up and decorating. Throughout the evening Lizette and company kept checking in with me to make sure I was happy with their efforts. On the day of the wedding, being a bit of a control freak, I was worried on multiple levels about multiple things. The service at the reception was smooth and seamless. Lizette, Aubrey and John were on top of things so that I did not have to worry at all. They helped make my wedding reception extraordinary! read more

IN TERMS OF A BAR-- As an undergrad who has spent many a night at this bar (and all the bars on main street), I have never felt so utterly disrespected by any other bouncer as I have in Kate's. I'm sure not all of them are like this, but I have had experiences with handsy, grouchy, rude, and downright impolite bouncers on more occasions than I can count. After a bouncer wouldn't let me 65 year old father in because he forgot his wallet at the hotel on graduation weekend, I would never come back here. IN TERMS OF A RESTAURANT-- Food is cheap (you get what you pay for) but I've had 2 awful experiences with the same waitress. She was extremely rude and avoided our table. She did not smile once the entire time she was serving us and we felt incredibly awkward and disrespected. My parents came here (without me) on move-out day and had a similar experience, so I won't be returning. There's tons of really nice places on main street with better service, so I recommend you spend your money elsewhere read more

Let me start with the good. Nachos were terrific, loaded with toppings, melted cheese, chili, all very flavorful. Now the bad. Service was slow and main dishes were woefully subpar. I think they try to make up for poor quality by giving you huge portions. Sorry, but I'll take quality over volume any day. Used to be the burgers here were top notch. Today? Not so much. Burger lacked taste and was a bit greasy. Fries could have been crispier too. Salad was uninspiring at best. I would recommend that you have nachos and beer here, then walk across the street and have dinner at Iron Hill and one of their craft beers. read more

One of our favorite places to dine for the last 40 years...we will not go back. We had dinner there tonight...I had French soup ($7)and although it had plenty of onions...it had no flavor. I also ordered boneless wings ($12) to be split with my brother in law. The basket had 8 tiny wings that wouldn't have satisfied the appetite of a tufted titmouse. We asked to talk to the manager but she was no help...she gave us no satisfaction. Her response was that she would pass on our complaint to the owner. September 2011 - aweful! The steak I had was exactly the same as the steak I had the night before at Danny's. Service was good and ambiance okay. Just like Kids was, the band is too loud. Lastly why they don't have a TV facing the back corner is beyond anyone in my group could figure. Just cheap feeling! What a shame. Go across the street to the Iron Hill Brewery for a better experience. Only go here if every other restaurant in Newark is closed! And then think twice about it. Came here for lunch yesterday and loved it! Kids eat free all summer. And they have a pretty extensive menu to pick from too. My wife had the turkey club sandwich, and couldn't finish it, due to the shear volume, because it was delicious. I went with Kate's Rueben. The meat was literally melting in my mouth. It went great with my 60 minute IPAs. Best of all, was the service. The staff at places in this college area are usually staffed with very young kids who have no desire to satisfy the patrons. Kate's is different. From the hostess to the bar tenders, everyone is eager to please! To sum up: 1) Great food; 2) Really reasonable pricing (even for the alcohol); 3) Amazing service! read more

However when I got there the waiter screwed up my order and left onions on my sandwich, which I am highly allergic to. When I brought this to his attention he acted as if it was my fault even though he wasn't paying attention. They also still charged me for the sandwich I couldn't eat and that made me sick. I truly can't decide which was worse, the food or the service....nope, it was the service!!! It took 15 minutes after being seated to get drinks and then...nothing. After 35 minutes of waiting to order we finally went to the hostess stand to inquire after our server. Cue a flippant response from the hostess "Uh, I guess I could find her...?" and another ten minute wait before the server appeared. We ordered and.....waited 25 more minutes before our food was brought. I immediately noticed that the sandwich I was served was not quite what I ordered, namely "Lednum's Cali Chicken $13 baked chicken breast, applewood smoked bacon, avocado, fire roasted tomatoes, monterey jack cheese, sriracha aioli drizzle, grilled & pressed ciabatta" It came without cheese of any kind and not a hint of avocado. I took a bite, realized that the sandwich was missing things so I waited for the server to appear. Cue another 20 minute wait. When I asked, "doesn't this sandwich come with avocado and cheese?" her response was a clipped. "I don't know. What do you want me to do?" I should have said, forget the whole thing and walked out then, but I was with a group of girlfriends and sitting in the back of a booth so...instead I asked if I could get some avocado and cheese on my sandwich, holding out my plate so she could take it back to the kitchen but instead of taking it she walked away! She returned a few minutes later with three chunks of avocado in a bowl, set it down without a word and left again. Not only was the avocado ice cold, I also had to slice it into manageable pieces before I could put it only my now soggy sandwich. I love going to a restaurant to make my own lousy food, don't you? After all of this...we had to physically stand up, search for and flag down this server to refill our water glasses and ask for the check. Never once did this girl apologize for anything, and she sent a different server to bring us our checks and pick them up to process them. Worst service I have EVER experienced and awful food. Never going back!! Also, this is a note from the three of my friends who ordered them: fried balls of mashed potatoes are NOT TATER TOTS!!!! Whatever those are, they are GROSS!! read more

HORRIBLE MANAGEMENT: ALISHA I placed a lunch order over the phone for myself and a co-worker. I was given the total, and then I reviewed the prices online and determined the total given to me over the phone was higher. I called back and was told a surcharge is now being added to each take-out order. I arrived at the restaurant to pick up my order and before walking out I decided to check the order. I noticed there was no salad dressing included in box. This has happened the last 4 times, within the last 6 months that I have ordered at this restaurant, so I asked for a manager. During one of my previous visits before today I was missing dressing and the avocado that is standard in the cobb salad that I usually order. The manager I spoke with was Alisha. I explained to Alisha my concern about the surcharge not being initially disclosed to me when I placed the order, and that my last 4 orders have been inaccurate. Alisha shook her head, displayed a facial expression that indicated she was not interested in my concerns, and did not even proceed to offer an apology for my order being messed up. She only asked what salad dressing I wanted, went to the kitchen to get it, and then began speaking to the bartender about my complaint before I could get out of the door. She did not even attempt to apologize for the inaccuracy of my current and previous orders. This manager Alisha is horrible at her job and the owner Alan Burkhard of Delaware Hospitality should send her to a conflict resolution seminar. read more

Alright so this review will be to the point and in two parts about my visit on Friday, August 21, 2015. 1) They need to educate their door staff on IDs. I had to wait for 12 minutes outside with my friends just because they didn't know how to read a DC issued drivers license. Washington, DC changed their license style on May 1, 2014...over a YEAR ago. Yet the three gentleman outside the door still had no idea what a legal DC drivers license looked like and believed my 100% government issued drivers license was fake. They took it upstairs. Brought a manager out. I was told "the reason I think it's fake is because I don't see a hologram". Like dude, ITS REAL. Apparently the establishment didn't have an updated ID book either (which should be a priority for a bar). After 10 minutes of standing outside with my friends and having countless people walk by and inside, they finally go to another bar and get an updated ID book and realize...OH GEE, it IS a real government issued drivers license. GO FIGURE. Again, get an updated ID book, educate the staff. 2) Delicious lemon drop shots. read more
