I was so excited to bring my bestie to Kittea and it was fantastic... in theory. In practice, paying ~30 dollars to be ignored by cats is not worth it. My main critique which my friend and other Yelp reviews have pointed out is that the cats seem disinterested, probably due to overstimulation. There are a lot of cats and a lot of people cramped into the small cafe space. Of the ~14 cats present, 2 were mildly interested in playing, but none were interested in being pet. Some of the cats tolerated petting, but multiple participants during the hour-long reservation were scratched. I don't blame the cats, and I understand there is only so much within the cat attendant's control. However, I think fewer people per reservation, less reservations per day, or more breaks for the cats could create an environment that better suits both the visitors and the cats themselves. Additionally, the tea experience needs to be improved. I had a canned sparkling water and my friend drank a canned boba. It's nice that they provided one complimentary drink per person, but it wasn't what I would expect from a cat cafe. Overall, KitTea could improve on both the cat and cafe aspects. After my visit, I would be quicker to visit my friends who own cats OR if I was desperate enough, I might sign up to volunteer at a local animal shelter. read more

This was my first time visiting a cat cafe and it was a super cute experience! The cats were really cute and the staff were incredibly friendly. The place is also great since they adopt out ~half of the cats there. I give this place 5 stars because of how great a cause it is but personally didn't feel like it was worth the money to visit and don't plan to visit again. Here are some things to note before visiting: I came at 4 PM and the cats were clearly tired. Within the first 5 minutes, both my boyfriend and I got very bored since all of the cats were either sleeping or didn't want any attention. I would recommend coming earlier in the day. In the hour we were there, I was able to pet one cat that was awake and that was in the first minute we were there. There were also too many people in the room. It felt very cramped at times, as we had to squeeze past people. And because most of the cats were sleeping, people would crowd around the 1 or 2 cats that were awake. There was also a pretty potent smell throughout the entire store, which got even worse inside the cat room. Recommend bringing a mask if you can't handle the smell. The place is also not an actual cafe. They give you a can of sparkling water beforehand and you can buy small snacks like peanut butter cups or a bag of chips but otherwise not a cafe. read more

I saw that KitTea had moved down to Valencia next to Arizmendi and decided to drop by to see how it works and ended up chilling for an hour. It was so great to be around some super friendly felines and just relax. The staff is helpful if you have questions and there's a bunch of cats here. I went and only two other people were there while I was. The cats do rotate out when folks adopt them and such so the cast of cats will be rotating which just means it is smart to drop by regularly if you make new friends. I am conflicted about this place. I went there with the idea of adopting a kitten. I've decided to take a beautiful tabby that's been in the store for 6 MONTHS. Not so easy! I first had to go through a process. The first thing that the employee said was "we need to make sure your landlord is OK with this" - Me: But I own, I don't have a landlord!!!! IT DIDN'T MATTER A THING "you still have to go through the process and it's only. Besides, there are other candidates interested" !!!!!! If there are other candidates, why is this cat stuck in this tiniest store for 6 FULL MONTHS without a single adoption????? The other item that caught my attention is the cat sleeping on the afternoon with all the action around her. Something is up and it doesn't look normal. I've had cats for many decades and this brings suspicions. My advice to the owners is to not milk the money away from cats for so many months. Burger is one of my all-time favorites and the guy who lets you rub his belly pretty much anytime. I was hoping that Noodle or Struedel would jump on my back, but they were not in the jumpy mood. (: After checking in, shoes were asked to be taken off and placed in cubbies. Canned/bottled beverages ranging from smoothies to carbonated drinks were offered in the fridge next to the cubbies. Prior to entering the cat area, hands were sanitized and rules were discussed. Cats were very nice and cuddly! Many were in their boxes but came out to play. A few friends and I came here to celebrate a birthday party on Saturday. If you are not familiar with cats and maybe want to be familiar just because or to get your own as a pet someday, this would be a great way to explore being around cats. Pros: *Beautiful place, decorated well and even gave me ideas of things I want to do for my 2 cats at home. Ambiance and music was very nice. *Staff were polite. *Location is great! Easy to walk to, grab food near, etc., *Their shop had very unique and fund cat themed things to purchase. *I was amazed at not being able to smell the litter while being in the room with multiple litter boxes *You are free to interact as much or as little with the cats as you would like. Cons: *Kittens tend to be more playful than adult cats, and since there was only adult cats, it was a little boring (only 2-3 cats responded to any play, the rest slept or laid there to be pet). I would suggest only going when there are kittens. As a cat owner myself, it was hard to justify paying for what I get at home. I visited for the first time with my friend for my birthday yesterday late afternoon. We only had less than an hour to see the cats but we got a good discount and it was only the 2 of us with the cats. They had plenty of hand sanitizers in the cat café and capacity was 6 people. We had to remove our shoes before entering and sanitized our hands too. The cats were still asleep but most were waking up for feeding time I had a lovely time with the cats! Petting and playing with them was so much fun and the staff were very kind and informative; I talked to one of the cat wranglers, Kay (sp?) and she was very nice to talk to. These cats all a mix of many breeds and most come from streets or had owners who couldn't care for them. They all have such different and fun personalities. I connected with one of their resident cats, Passion who sat on my lap, which was special since I was told she is picky and does that to one person a day Before leaving we got to see the cats eat before they had to close the shop too. One even climbed over the wall to eat. Maybe it was Buffy the black cat? I am so happy a place like this exists and I hope more people visit so they can be opened for a long time. I booked our appointment on their website to make sure we got in. The folks are awesome and friendly, and they can try to accommodate if you don't make an appointment, but its not guaranteed due to how popular they are and limited in spacing. Since we went during COVID, make sure to bring socks and masks and try to be safe and the staff do a great job conveying that message on their website and once you get there. The cats and kittens were nice to pet. The staff are definitely lover of cats and adoption causes. My honest negative feedback is I wish they had more cats to play with. I made myself a promise awhile ago that I strongly wanted to go to KitTea Cat Café right off the bucket list of future visits, and here I was on Halloween. I thought I would start on Thursday for a happy meowr for $15; unfortunately, the staff moved it to Wednesday at a different time schedule. They gotta be kitten me! Inside a special theme café, there's a cat lounge on the left side, and a modern café at my right side. If I want what's interesting and adventurous, petting many different types of cats was a remarkable experience. Well, it's a good thing I paid $20 in advance, but I would never missed an opportunity on a next day. It's so much fun to give each cat a gentle rub while enjoying free glass of water or tea in the cat lounge. It's never that easy to have a cat on my lap. Only one cat was approachable enough to pounce on my shoulders, and that's Belle. This female furball sure gives me a warm welcome. But that's not the last I see of her. Just when I wanted to give another cat to walk on my shoulder, Belle quickly pounced right on my shoulders! THAT was the third time she's giving me her warm fuzzies. Belle isn't the only cat who surprised me. When I crouched and gently rubbed the cat I unknowingly bumped into, that orange cat zoomed through my legs and into the wooden hamster wheel. Didn't see that everyday! If I were to visit the same café again, I would buy something to drink or eat. But spending one full hour with cats is a better way to learn from very friendly staff members and customers, knowing cat language by its tail. What an amazing experience! I had a wonderful and peaceful time being with the adult cats for about forty minutes. The staff are very knowledgeable, patient, understanding, calm, and caring. You can tell they enjoy what they do and they have all the answers to your questions. They had a complimentary iced tea at the end of the session located in the front with all the wonderful souvenirs like stickers and buttons just to mention a few. I felt so at peace just being here surrounded by adorable cats especially during difficult and unpredictable times like this. I felt so welcomed and seen as a human being and I want to thank every single one working here and making this place a possibility. I've had KitTea cafe on my list of places to check out for a long time being a cat lover that I am. I couldn't be happier when I first heard about this cafe opening up in the city. We lucked out as I didn't make reservations, but Ryan was gracious to accommodate us. There are two rooms: there's a small cafe where they serve food and drinks including some delicious hot tea. You can choose from a range of different teas and coffee drinks. I got a cup of hot tea before going into the other room where the kitties are. Before going into the room where the cats are, they require taking off shoes and sanitizing hands. We got a briefing from one of the staff about how to interact with the cats. The room is kept clean and didn't smell like cat pee which is a plus. The cats have a lot of areas to nap or hide for the skittish ones. The famous cat wheel by the window is well utilized, one of the black and white cats couldn't get enough of it. Cats with collars are up for adoption and the ones without are resident cats. I would say there were about fifteen or more in the room. There is an option to order and eat inside the room with cats, but the staff explained that they cannot serve customers directly due to the strict health code. Instead they have a protocol for customers to pick up there own food at the front desk near the entrance. Free tea refills are available inside the cat room offering four types of Japanese teas to choose from. The staff recommends visiting the cats towards the end of the day near closing time since they are more active just before dinner. They offer a stamp card- visit five times and get the sixth visit free. You know I'll be back! read more

I've been visiting KitTea for a few years now and seeing both the new cats & kittens, in addition to those i call the Ambassador Cats (permanent residents, Tippy , Jellybean etc.) is always a joy. Kitty cat haven. If you love cats, this place is worth a visit. $25/hr to enjoy tea while hanging out with cats. They have 4 varieties of tea you can drink unlimited while in the playroom with the cats. They also have a cafe (outside the playroom) with limited drinks and food items that you can order for extra charge. They have their own kitty residents that live there permanently, but, they also have 2-6 adoptable cats they foster through Wonder Cats Rescue. No same day adoption. Most of the cats are friendly but seemed a bit tired out from human contact all day long. I felt a bit bad for them and don't blame the ones trying to hide to get some alone/kitty nap time in. Don't be a jerk and try to wake the ones trying to nap. I do think it's a cool idea to foster adoptable cats while allowing meet-and-greet time for those who are looking to adopt. read more

I took my mom here to get her 'cat fix' after loosing her cat 6 years ago (). Great concept but I regret going. 1. Prices are steep: $25/person on weekdays. For that price, I should've taken my mom to the shelter, had her pet different cats and then donated the ticket prices to the shelter. Or maybe I would've taken her out to dinner? Idk but the point is that the prices are too high. 2. By 4pm the cats were beyond DONE. They didn't want to be petted. Some ran away upon seeing more people, a fight between two was starting (no intervention but later, cats were probably stressed out). About half of them we're meowing at the back door. I asked and was told it's because they're hungry and feeding time is at 6 or they are "asking" for a time out. If the cats are indicating they are hungry - two hours before their time - feed them. If they are showing signs of needing to get away - shouldn't they have brought them to the back cage for a time out? **Seeing this made me realize they use cats for a profit. It made me sad. 3. As mentioned at the end of #2, I felt as if I was in a circus....Paying for my enjoyment at the cats expense. Most cats were beyond done being petted. A good 1/3 hissed or snapped upon trying to pet the cat (I got scratched twice and mom once). So you pay (a lot!) to pet cats that clearly don't want to be petted? Ugh. Perhaps they should have different cats throughout the day? Totally regret coming here. On that note, I'm changing my review from two to one . read more

If I could, I'd give KitTea Cat Cafe a raving 10 star review, but since Yelp has it's limits, a 5 star review will have to do. I've been coming here for the past couple years - just to get away from a crazy work week and to wine down with cats and tea. Its the closest thing to therapy in my book, and for a way cheaper price: $20 on weekdays, $25 on weekends/holidays, and $30 for special events like mewvie nights or yoga nights. Even though walk-ins are welcome, I'd recommend calling ahead or booking online since spaces fill up quickly. You pay in advance and they have a 12 hour cancellation policy for a full refund, or an 8 year reschedule policy. They have you take off your shoes (so wear socks!) and hand sanitize before you enter the cat lounge. But once you're in, it's an hour of chill time with your favorite floof. There are some resident cats (Ron is my personal fave), but there're also cats up for adoption. During COVID, your ticket gets you 40 min of play time rather than the typical 55 min so that they can clean up and sanitize in between groups. This past weekend, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit their special KITTEN lounge. It's the same price as their cat lounge, but you can only chose one or the other. Nice plus - you walk out with a cute mason jar of their fresh in-house brewed tea. They usually have it served with your visit, but due to safety precautions, they wait until the end to hand you your complementary tea. I usually run into Natalie or Hector as the host and cat wrangler duo, and I have to give a shout out to this phenomenal team. They're sweet, professional, funny and personal. They make you feel welcomed and at home and really take the time to give you the background of each cat. Thanks guys, you really make the experience at KitTea cafe that much better, smoother and more enjoyable. This place really is one of a kind in the Bay Area. I really love how their mission is to save cats and that it's a place where a few of them can call home. It's highly recommended to make a reservation because when we got here we heard that all the spots were filled. 2. I think this is a great place and highly recommend people to support this business. I went on a weekday with my coworkers, and we each paid $25 for the 1 hour cat visit and had four teas to drink from. I did try one or two of the teas, but really only took sips, because the cats were 100% the main attraction. I hate to call out some other reviewers, but anyone who says they "didn't get their moneys worth" or that $25 is too much to spend here, clearly do not like cats enough. If you don't like cats, and want to support an organization that helps animals, it obviously wouldn't be worth it to you because you're not valuing the experience itself. Plus, you're supporting a business that is helping save cats - they've adopted 14 cats (their "residence") and have a rotating list of cats that are up for adoption. I'm honestly shocked they have days where the tickets are less than $25! We visited on a workday, we chose their last slot time (which I think was 430?). I don't recommend this because the cats were not down to play that much anymore :( A lot of them were asleep, but they're cats, so what can you do? Still very much enjoyed interacting with them and I took the best sleepy kitty pics. My interactions with the staff was fantastic. I was allowed to help feed the cats (because I basically begged to LOL) and they gave me a free sticker because I bought a lot of them. When I called and tried to reschedule, because one of my friends couldn't make it, they offered to help me sell her ticket! Thankfully she ended up being able to go, but I really don't know what else you can ask for. read more

First, this is a for-profit business that happens to showcase rescue cats and adoptable cats in partnership with a non-profit animal rescue. The space is split between the cat area and, a small cafe with a few tables and a nicely sized bar along a viewing window, and the lobby with trinkets for sale and the reception desk. The facility is very clean and bright. There are two bathrooms on site - one in the cat area and one in the non-cat area. Reservations are easy to make and the check in process is simple. The cats are all content and appear to be happy and well cared for. In the afternoon they really like the sun and are pretty sleepy. We didn't mind at all. It was just fun to visit. The only reason I am not giving a full five stars: The space is pretty small and people tend to come in 2 person pairs or more. It is kind of awkward to move around the room and when we were there, I'd say the capacity of the room would have felt more comfortable if there had been at least 2 less people in it. The lobby area is also really tight and once it fills up with people trying to come in, it makes it hard for people to come out of the room. When you exit, you have to put your shoes back on and gather your belongings. However, the people who are waiting for their spot to begin are milling around and basically in the way! A smoother transition between groups would be nice. After you visit Kit Tea SF, be sure to visit and support some of the non-profit adoption lounges operated by rescue groups, like Cat Town Oakland, SJ Dancing Cat, and Mini Cat Town. read more

For starters, their petting policy is a lot more relaxed--you can have the cats on your lap and pet them while they're sound asleep. Also, the cat lounge members aren't watching you like a hawk throughout the entire experience. They also have a cute little cafe where you can watch the cats through the glass window. Their waffles looked pretty good! Cons: the hour passes by extremely quickly and $25/hr is really pricey. Also, the addition of tea was also a nice touch, but I felt that the cups of tea were a bit small and it got a bit tedious asking again and again. As someone with cute aggression (it's a thing! Look it up on Wikipedia), KitTea Cat Cafe is absolutely dangerous. For $20 a session (can be $25 or $28, if you pick more popular days), you get an hour to have tea surrounded by a bunch of furry friends! They have a couple of benches and self-serve tea, as well as some toys to play with the cats. Since I have a cat at home, I know they're generally most active in the mornings and the evenings - so I went on a Friday night at 6pm. It was perfect timing, since most of the cats were out and about... and surprisingly, there weren't too many patrons (probably because it's dinnertime). At the end of our session, the staff started rolling out the food carts... so we got to see the cats go crazy at feeding time! None of the cats sat on my lap, but a couple pawed at me and most allowed me to pet them. A bunch of them seemed to like playing with this girl's poofy dress (she wore a ballroom gown - odd, but what can I say, it's San Francisco), so if you want the cats to love you, ballroom gown is the way to go. There's a cafe outside of the cat area where you can order more drinks and food and watch the cats behind a glass pane, as well as a little gift shop out front. Short Story: A great cate cafe...but it's a hit or miss sometimes. Long Story: I've been to this cat cafe twice now. The first time was fantastic. I appreciated the cats, their toys, and being able to pet them. The tea and coffee were good too. The second time however, was a bit of a different story. The food was just as good along with the cat toys. The difference were the cats. They have bigger cats this time. They didn't really seem like they wanted to play and most of them kept going to the backroom. I know it's a risk you take with these cat cafes...after all you can't train the cat exactly like a dog. But since I had just a good first experience I was really looking forward to going back. Sadly, one of the cats scratched me and a lot of them didn't want to be picked up. I have two cats myself so while I'm not a cat whisper, I certainly know what I'm doing. But overall it was an okay experience. The employee inside the play area with us didn't seem too interested in engaging with the cats too. He brought out the laser pointer towards the last 5 min...which was a bit odd. I wished he brought it out sooner. The last time I was there the laser pointers were out so that you could use them yourself. Maybe someone abused it and had it taken away or something. I am a dog AND cat person so any reason to go to a cat cafe will always be welcome. It's not cheating on my cat if I visit the kitties at KitTea Cat Cafe is it? :) KitTea Cafe is located in Hayes Valley...we got there a quarter to 12 and we waited with others for the cafe to open. When it did, we were asked to go into the cafe to get our cups for tea. In the front of the cafe is the cash wrap with lots of kitty themed merchandise. We took off our shoes and went into the cat room. There was a short lecture about how to play with the cats and to recognize behaviors if a cat is overstimulated ex. flicking of tail and also a warning not to rub the bellies of any cat except a ginger called Cheddar who will invite you for belly rubs. The cats were friendly and loved to be scratched under their chins. My favorite cat was Otis, a white and orange kitty who lounged on a black pillow practically the whole time. A friendly fluffy ginger named Dolly jumped on my lap and decided to make biscuits and suck on my fleece jacket. I felt lucky I was picked! The shy cats came out from their hiding places when it was treat time and we were told that they were taught to sit - raise up your hand with the treat in it and they will sit. They were very polite and sat when you asked them to. It was a great experience going to KitTea Cat Cafe. For those who don't have kitties at home it's a great place to play and be around them. They have a frequent visitor card that when you go 5 times you get a free hour with the kitties. Sounds like a plan to me! read more

I really enjoyed this cat cafe, and I hope to come back again when they have their egg puffs available on the menu. The space is divided into 3 rooms: entry which is also a store, the cafe, and the cat space. You can order your food in the cafe, and it would be brought to the cat space during your visit. Because of food regulations, you have to get your food as the employees that handle the cats aren't allowed to touch your food. You're asked to take off your shoes, and you can buy socks if you don't want to be barefoot. The concrete can be slippery though, so bring non-slip socks. If you just want to watch, you can sit in the cafe and order your food and beverages. There's a selection of unlimited teas, and there is an option to upgrade. You will have to go to the employee in the cat space to place your orders. My friends and I were there in the afternoon. Most of the cats were asleep, and one was high on catnip. I've noticed from going to these cat cafes is that the cats get over stimulated, so they just want to sleep. If you want more active cats, it's best to make a reservation in the morning. KitTea also has some cute events, from pajama parties to yoga. I'd definitely want to try yoga there soon. read more

This place is a hidden gem, what a brilliant idea! There are so many cats and some of them have very distinct personalities. One of them in particular, to my surprise, likes to jump on your back if you bend over lol. You also get to feed them and seeing them all gather around is pretty cool. But I think the best part about this place is that the cats just aren't for show, they are also adoptable and I applaud this place for the care they put into trying to give these cats a home. read more

Clean space and nice Idea, cats are obviously VERY cute. The space is quite small so if you are claustrophobic I suggest waiting outside until its your time to go in as it gets pretty packed. There is also a waiting room where you can try the complimentary tea or order a drink from the menu. I also suggest that if you want a full experience of fun playful kitties to make an early reservation, but if napping kitties is your thing then I wouldn't worry about that too much. You cant pick up the cats but if you are lucky enough a staff member just might place a cat in your lap or on your back! The tea was perfectly warm and cozy on a rainy day in the city.
