Melody and the team at LSC are the best! We've adopted our first furbaby from them back in 2019 and he's very much my soul dog. They are one of the only rescues that was consistently responsive and great at answering questions as well as following up. Yes, you have to answer an extensive questionnaire but that's literally all rescues, and frankly that shows they are being thorough and careful in ensuring the rescues they have are going to the right home. Adopting an animal needs to fit the right family and situation, which Melody and her team takes the time to do to help ensure a harmonious household for all. We recently adopted our second LSC rescue back in November 2024 and I'm so thankful we were able to adopt from them again! I was specifically looking to adopt a Golden, which all of the local Norcal Golden rescues were difficult to work with. One of the rescues not only had an extensive application, but discriminated against us for not being rich enough to own a single family home in the Bay Area. The woman that ran the rescue felt that all her Goldens had to have big yards to run in....after being discouraged and not getting responses back from other rescues, I happened to check Love & Second Chances weekly to see if they would eventually have a golden available to adopt, as I know they get a number of different breeds. I was willing to wait for one that would fit our household, and that I was sure we could provide the needed care for. Thank goodness for Love & Second Chance! They have an international program where they will rescue dogs from other countries and since our first rescue from them was from that program, how fitting it is for our second to also come from the international program. During this second adoption, they have included so much more helpful information, documents on different topics in bringing home a new rescue, suggestions on best dog tools to use, videos to prepare you, and even discounted GPS tracking options for your new rescue. Clear instructions on airport pick up, consistent correspondence with not only Melody but also the international rescuer, and never feeling lost on anything throughout the whole process. Honestly, I knew they were a very caring organization the first time but the second time around the thought and thoroughness increased so much more. If you truly care about rescues taking the time to pair the right dog to your household, they are the most reliable in my experience. I just think potential adopters need to keep in mind that they're doing what's best for the dog, and that's really how it should be. If you can be patient and trust that LSC organizers are considering all factors to pair you with the right fit, then please help them out and adopt a rescue from them! Unfortunately we did not have the best experience with this shelter. I first reached out about a month ago in regard to a dog that was part of their international rescue. I appreciated that Melody responded within a day and connected me with the rescuer in Korea. The rescuer shared photos and videos of the dog and we were in love! A few days later, the rescuer said they were pulling this dog for adoption because they needed to evaluate some of their behavior more. We were sad but continued on our search. A couple weeks later I saw this shelter post another dog that fit what we were looking for. I submitted interest again and the next day Melody informed me they received many applications for the dog but now the owners decided to keep their dog. Again we were disappointed but what can we do? Another couple weeks goes by and I see another adorable dog on their site up for adoption. I again submitted interest as this dog was also part of their international rescue program. Melody connected me with a different rescuer in Korea who found this dog. She sent me probably over 100 photos and videos of this dog, we set up a meet and greet for about a week after this dog was to arrive to America. During this wait she sent me frequent updates about how he was adjusting in the foster home, what his behavior was like, etc. At this point I have had consistent contact with the rescuer and started to form a bond with the dog as I was starting to feel like he was mine. The day finally comes to meet the dog at the foster family's home (Thursday), everything goes great and we loved the dog! Immediately after the meeting I reached out to move forward with the adoption. I received a response a day later (Friday 5pm) from Melody that she'd like to set up a phone call the next day after 3 pm. I agreed and waited, called her after 3pm (Saturday) and sent a follow up text since she did not answer. I received a response at 9pm that night, there was a last minute transport so she was unavailable. We agreed to talk the next day, no time was confirmed. It is Sunday at this point, I was already informed by the rescuer they planned to make a decision by the weekend. Sunday morning I checked Instagram to find out from the rescuer that the dog had been adopted, the post was from 2 days ago (meaning Friday)... I had not had any contact with anyone yet about a decision being made. After doing some digging the dog was adopted by the foster mom's cousin and would be going to live in LA. Mind you, we asked the foster mom on Thursday if anyone else was interested and she said she did not know. At this point I am freaking out because we may have not been chosen, which I understand it was not guaranteed, but we had already tried adopting 2 dogs from this shelter, had built an emotional bond to this dog because I talked at length with the rescuer, only to find out via Instagram that he'd been adopted. Sunday 4pm rolls around and I have not heard from Melody, I tried calling her again and she picked up. She said there was a dog missing so it's been a hectic day (understandable). We chatted and she explained the next steps in the adoption process, when she's done I ask her about the Instagram post and she has no idea about a decision being made. I explain the situation and she says she'll find out for me and get back to me. Monday morning I open my email to a message from Melody at 1 am saying the dog has been adopted, the post was not what I thought it was and that it was just a post about a reunion with other dogs from LA. (It clearly stated he's going to LA to live with the cousin of the foster mom, who had another dog). Either way, at this point we are emotionally drained from this shelter, we recently lost our dog so we were excited about potentially having a new family member, I thought we'd have good luck since we had already tried to adopt 2 dogs from her so I thought she'd try to help us out, this shelter has 99% 5 Star reviews so I thought we'd be in good hands. At the end of the day I don't think we ever really had a chance, of course they are going to give the dog to her cousin since she's a trusted source at this point. I wish we hadn't moved as far as we did in the process because it was truly disappointing to find out this way. If you're reading this, I hope this shelter is more mindful of family's emotions in the future as it was a roller coaster of emotions for my entire family. read more

Highly highly highly recommend Love & Second Chances. Adopt, don't shop! The whole process was so smooth and easy. We found the dog we were interested in on their website and filled out an online application that took about 20 minutes. Within 24 hours, Melody reached out to us on next steps. She connected us with the foster parent to ask questions and see more photos/videos. We recorded an intro video to provide a tour of the place we live at. Once we were selected, Melody scheduled and provided flight details. Our doggo was flying from Korea to the US! Yes they endure a long flight in their carrier, but it's important that you don't let your dog out until you get back home because many times these rescued dogs are a high flight risk. Afterwards, Donna will check in every so often to see how it's going and answer any questions you may have. It's been about a month since bringing home our sweet boy Alfie. He's a Jindo terrier mix and was 10 months old when we got him. He is very food motivated, dare I even say more than myself?! Through the last year or two, my boyfriend and I were seriously preparing to adopt a dog together. After we moved to a new place that would be better suited for a dog, we finally went and started filling out applications for some dogs that would best fit our lifestyle. It has been a wonderful experience working with Melody and L&SC. Donna, our mentor, has also been so responsive and helpful with all my (numerous) questions; she's been an amazing support! My husband and I were ready to add another fur baby to our little family, so I started looking at different rescues regularly and sending in applications for dogs. Due to COVID, there's been an increase in the number of people adopting dogs! Which is great, but also makes the process of adopting more difficult. We saw this cute little tripod for adoption and just fell in love. Melody replied very quickly and explained that he would be an international adoption and asked if we were okay with that. We were, and we moved ahead with the process. She put me in touch with the rescue in Korea who sent me pictures and videos of the little guy. They also helped answer my questions. We had to record a short video showing our house and introducing ourselves (I think normally during non-pandemic times they might actually do in-person home visits) to send to Melody as part of the vetting process. I appreciated that they made sure we were serious. After what seemed like an excruciatingly long wait, we were officially approved! (He had other suitors as well.) We feel so lucky to have gotten to bring Lucky (now Laddoo) into our home! He was the best New Years Eve present ever (and the best thing to come out of 2020). He is very sweet and affectionate and just wants all the love. He adjusted pretty quickly, and we were surprised he wasn't jet lagged at all, even though he'd just flown across the world from Korea! His dog brother Dobby is showing him that he doesn't need to be scared of other dogs and that we will protect him. He has absolutely no problem getting around on his three little legs and has so much energy and spunk! He loves going for long walks, sniffing all the smells, and coming home to some food and head scratchies. I first heard about this rescue from a lab mate of mine. I've never even heard of the Formosan Mountain Dog breed until I met hers and he was adorable. Although, her dog was shy, he seemed really loyal and easily trainable. I also loved their small-medium size. When my fiance and I were ready to adopt and live in a pet-friendly rental, we decided to go for it! We were looking at a puppy, but unfortunately, that adoption was pending. It was a little hard because we thought that puppy was going to be it, so just understand that puppies go really fast and that if that adoption is pending, there are plenty of others wanting to be yours. That's when we fell in love with our dog, Mochi, when we saw her on the adoptables page. Her bio was detailed and I can't express how much the videos and the pictures were so helpful! Mochi was an international rescue, so visiting the puppy was by no means possible. The videos were also so helpful because you can see how they react to strangers, other dogs, cats, and how they are with food. It was as detailed as her being crate-trained, leash-trained, or even pad-trained! Like WHAT?! At 5 months, we were astounded when we picked her up at a vet (just had a spay) in San Ramon and when we took her home for the first time, we laid down a pee pad and she went right away on it! AMAZING! I cannot say enough good things about this rescue and that you really are saving a life. Mochi was a lone doggo roaming the streets of Taiwan and here she is in the U.S. enjoying the heck out of life. When my fiance and I were ready to adopt again about two years later, we went to this same rescue and found Sky. She was a cute, white Formosan and very very timid and shy. We knew this when we found out she was local and thought she was going to come out of her shell, but unfortunately, the foster parents didn't tell us exactly what was going on with her. Ultimately, we had to surrender her back to the rescue and get a refund (which I didn't care about), because she wasn't getting better and had some real issues. She was nippy, very territorial, and would book it if she was let loose. This made training very difficult and we ultimately decided that Sky is meant for owners with more experience with her type, which we do not possess. I've mentioned and given my feedback to Melody (found of the rescues) and she is extremely receptive and really wants the best fit for the dog and their new family. Having found this rescue is a blessing and have caused a bias in our eyes with having nothing but Formosans! We love this breed so much and we support this rescue through and through! read more

The application was straight forward and thorough and Melody guided us throughout the process when it came time for the home tour, meet and greet, etc. We could tell the org and their fosters have all the dogs' best interests in mind, working with each dog's own timeline and personality. We adopted our sweet terrier mix Clover from love and second chances. We are so lucky we found melody and this rescue online because our lives wouldn't be the same without little Miss Clover. She is a terrier mix and melody and her team rescued her and her siblings almost two years ago. We found them online after looking on google for "Bay Area dog rescues" and fell in love immediately when we saw her picture. I filled out the application online and tried to patiently wait for a response. Melody reached out a few days later to schedule the visit with clover and her foster family. We brought our other dog, Jake with us because we knew we wanted her and we wanted to make sure they got along. Sure enough, they hit it off! We also hit it off with her foster family, and they said we seemed like the perfect fit and they were going to cancel the other meetings because they knew Clover was perfect for us! The whole process went pretty quick, all we had to do was film an introduction video to melody of us and our apartment, and then see if we got accepted! We did, then picked up clover the next day! Melody and her team also still covered clovers vaccinations that she needed and also paid for her to get spayed. Love and second chances are known for rescuing Taiwanese mountain dogs, which I personally think is amazing. If you're in the Bay Area and looking for a new rescue pup, these guys are your goto! I can't thank Melody (and Eve from Eve's Dogs in Taiwan) for allowing us the pleasure of adopting/rescuing our precious dog, Pepper (formally Daphne). She is so sweet and fits perfectly in our family! We found Love & Second Chances on the website www.petfinder.com. We were looking for a puppy to adopt after losing our dog of 12 years. We came across "Daphne" and instantly fell in love. We emailed Melody after completing the form on their website. I felt that the adoption process was smooth. After the application was submitted, Melody contacted us via email within 24 hours letting us know that "Daphne" was part of their international rescue and asked if we would like to continue with the adoption process. After agreeing, she got us in contact with Eve in Taiwan so that we can receive more pictures and videos. Also, we sent Melody a video tour of our home, as well as video introduction of us. After being approved, Melody was in constant contact with us and answered any questions we had. The adoption fee of $350.00 was paid via PayPal and Venmo. The adoption fee was very reasonable considering the puppy was flown from Taiwan to SFO; spayed; microchipped; she received her rabies shot and a series of other shots; she was dewormed; had a dosage of Frontline; and tested for any other diseases. Although the wait for "Daphne" to arrive from Taiwan to SFO was almost 2 weeks from when we were approved (we were waiting for a confirmed flight to SFO), the wait was worth it! She was flown using China Air inside a kennel with her sister "Dawn." We were able to keep the kennel she arrived in, along with a toy, a collar, body harness, and leash. I would HIGHLY recommend Melody and Love & Second Chances to anyone looking to adopt a fur baby! read more
