We were looking for a place to grab a quick lunch while in the area. My wife did her usual Yelp search and came across Kitchen Table Cafe. She noted that it was a place where I could get a burger and she could get a salad, and that it closed at 2:30 p.m., which fit our timing. We arrived a little before 1 p.m. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall on NE 134th, very close to where I-5 and I-205 merge. Inside, the décor was fairly plain, though they did have some Christmas decorations up. Most of the tables were occupied, and it appeared to be quite busy. The menu felt extensive, with roughly half dedicated to breakfast options, which explained why breakfast was still being served. The other side of the menu offered burgers, salads, and lunch items. We also learned that they have three locations in the Vancouver area. My wife ordered a chili burger without the bun or cheese along with a side salad, while I chose a bacon cheeseburger with tater tots. Her side salad arrived first, and she immediately noticed it wasn't chilled. She also felt the lettuce and tomatoes were past their peak and commented that she was glad she hadn't ordered a salad as her entrée. Our entrées arrived shortly after. She enjoyed the chili burger overall but felt it could have been served warmer. My burger was fine but nothing memorable, and the tater tots were the standard frozen variety. Like my wife's meal, my food was also on the cooler side. Service was adequate, but we both found ourselves wondering why this location holds a four-star rating on Yelp. For us, the experience landed squarely at "just OK," which feels more like a three-star experience. I stopped in one day because I had a little time to kill in the morning. There were people having business meetings, couples having breakfast, and me sitting alone. Room for all types of situations. I loved the food and the atmosphere. A few tables clustered together with dividers between sections works to keep the noise levels down so you can actually hear each other. The service was great! This is not the place where young women are going to fawn all over you. They do a phenomenal job of being there when you need it, doing their job, and letting you eat. I will definitely come back when I'm in the area. I also really enjoyed the food. The hash was just warmy goodness. I had just given a ride to a friend for a procedure at a nearby clinic. I was told that he would be done in approximately 2 hours. I was in the mood for coffee and a bite to eat. Kitchen Table Cafe was about 4 minutes away. I was seated fairly quickly, the table I was seated at was clean and comfy. I saw there was a mug of flavored creams on the table. Searching through them, they didn't have any dairy free options. When the server came to ask what beverage I would like, I asked what dairy alternative they had, just almond milk, which is my least favorite for coffee.. it's too thin for coffee, IMO. So I got a chamomile tea. It was a tea bag with a mug of hot water. After I sipped it, I liked it, and thought it would be good with almond milk and Stevia in the raw. It was. Reading through the menu, there weren't a lot of vegan options. But there was a Keep it Simple section with menu items that you could choose 3 items for a set price. I thought I could find 3 vegan items, which I did. I chose the toast (without butter) with avocado, red potatoes and seasonal fruit. I asked for 2 slices of toast, and was charged for the 2nd slice, and there wasn't enough avocado for the 2nd toast. The potatoes seemed undercooked and flavorless. When we arrived, a less-than-friendly hostess, grabbed some menus then signaled with her hand, "follow me" without a smile or even looking us in the eye. Waitress was okay. Looking at the clock as I saw they were getting slammed it took a while to get food. We all had drink refills in the 25 minutes it took to get our food. Everything was decent as far as taste and the food was hot. Two small mistakes on the order out of 4 people. English muffins and a potato choice, but not worth sending back. Everything tasted fine. Not anything to wow anyone per say but solid good. Portions for the money were OK for what we see these days. Not enough to take anything home by any means. 3 out of 4 of us were girls and they all polished their plates. If you are a big eater probably order something bigger off the menu if you find something. I am not sure what plates may be bigger.
