So why only three stars? Well I compare the tomato pie to taurant states their goal is and how they measure up to that goal for the value. Another way of saying that is, I look up the restaurant's own words about what they are trying to do and then measure them against their stated intention. So what does Kitchen Sync say? "Kitchen Sync is a soulful neighborhood restaurant offering farm-fresh, scratch-made fare served with extraordinary hospitality." They want a place where customers can "call it their own." KS also gives back 2% of every order into the community. So good marks to KS on all of the above. I came in for lunch looking to have a Bahn Mi sandwich, but our excellent server convinced me to go with the day's special of tomato pie and "Holly" side salad (with cashews and Granny Smith apples). The tomato pie was a not as traditional as being in a pie crust but was more akin to a pizza-like pastry. It was good, but not outstanding. I probably would not order it again. The side salad was a LOT of salad and it seemed like a lot of work to eat. So why only three stars? Well I compare the tomato pie to the best tomato pie I ever have had at Grits & Groceries in Belton. It too is a farm to table concept and their tomato pie was so good I ordered two to go at $8.00 each and drove them back to Greenville for later. I had in mind that I might order a KS version to go, but it didn't meet that standard and it was $17.30 also, by the way. For a slice of tomato pie and side salad, no drink. With tip, $20. Well KS, I like what you are doing and want to support the cause, but for a simple lunch, I can get similar at multiple places for half that cost. Absolutely stop in here if you're hesitant; everything from the atmosphere to service to food was impeccable. I came to Greenville on business & stopped in Kitchen Sync for a solo dinner on a Weds night. The place was bustling for mid-week, but I found a seat immediately at a counter since I was alone. My server Charles was there promptly, brought out water and a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon I ordered ($9), and offered me a full menu. I ordered the fennel and ricotta meatballs to start which arrived as a trio atop a dish of grits. The grits with the meatball worked really well together, and the meat was fresh and flavorful, I had just wished there were a bit more red sauce. I followed up with the Super Greens pizza which has a white base topped with greens (duh). Pizza was baked crisp, the dough was soft inside with a bit of char to the edges, and I loved the greens and mozzarella. Definitely a solid win for the pizza. I ended my meal with the Shmores dessert, a chocolate mousse style cake (DELISH!) served with a big toasted marshmallow, graham cracker crumbs, and salted caramel ice cream. This dessert was perfect for one person but could easily feed two. Total for wine, meatballs, pizza, and dessert was a mere $43. Loved it here. And Charles was by far an amazing server. This was my first (of 2 total) experience dining out during the pandemic and the first time I'd been to a restaurant since March, so I was a bit nervous about covid precautions, etc, but kitchen sync made me feel super safe and had delicious food to boot! We dined out on the patio, where tables were spread nice and far apart, and our server was super attentive and helpful. He wore gloves and I watched him change them a number of times while we were there, which made me feel like he was taking safety very seriously. We ended up getting the Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich (couldn't recommend MORE it was sooooo yummy) and the pork banh mi (also really tasty). So my overall quick read review is I wouldn't suggest this restaurant for kids, especially if you have younger children. And although the food was good, it felt overpriced when considering what we ordered and the portion sizes served. They charge a set gratitude. A very quick search in Yelp I typed "pizza" and "Kitchen Sync" was the #1 on the list and only 3 minutes away! Bingo! Easy pick right? Welll... maybe not. I probably wouldn't have picked this restaurant if I had time to do a better scroll through the reviews/photos as it is not what I would call casual OR kid friendly but we were already parked, kids unloaded and ready for food. So we were not in a position for any "take backs". We would just make the best of this new to us restaurant. All of this is at no fault of the restaurants or the employees who work there. The ambiance and setting was very nice just not what I was looking for. We were greeted with friendly faces and seated quickly and for that I was so thankful! We decided to get the pepperoni pizza and a farm house salad to split with everyone at our table. We also ordered an appetizer of fries thinking that would be a good started for the kids. And if you're a mom or if you've ever eaten out with children you know getting food out asap is good for everyone. Including the other customers around us. Unfortunately the appetizer came out with the food and honestly it did feel like it took awhile to arrive but even that wouldn't be worth mentioning but that paired with our experience with our server it feels worth mentioning. I try to ask for everything I need in one shot as to not run the server too much. After she took our order she didn't check on us once during the 30 minutes it took to get our food. We tried to get her attention to ask about our appetizer but we were not successful. Once we got our food I politely asked for extra napkins, plates and an extra fork. I also asked for ranch to dip our pizza. She replied with "there were already forks and napkins for everyone on the table." I told her my one year old accidentally dropped his fork and with 4 toddlers extra napkins are always a good idea. She just blinked and nodded. Continued to ask what size ranch I wanted. I thought it was odd but once I received our bill it was clear that she asked because they charge for condiments. Which was disappointing especially considering it was a $17 pepperoni pizza and the protein-less salad was around the same price. Although it was good, it wasn't a big pizza and it wasnt good enough to to justify the price in my opinion. So to charge the extra $1 for a small side of ranch felt like a bit excessive in my opinion. Also want to note we went on a weeknight evening and they were not overly busy and it did seem like they had several servers/employees. I am extremely sensitive to the fact that inflation and staff shortages are a real thing! I also know that serving a table with 4 kids is a lot. But we always do our best to clean up after our children and keep them behaving the best we can. But we didn't feel welcomed and it felt so uncomfortable for us. We came randomly on a Tuesday night. Got in around 6:00 and the place was crowded. They have parking next door but be aware that you may have to wait for a seat even on a Tuesday night. Cool decor, lots of rustic looks, brick walls. I had a burger which was perfectly done. The fries were obviously hand cut, and were better than 90% of fries in general. My wife had a salad. We did a Togo lunch order online Nov. 21st. This was probably the worst food I've ever had from here. I got the chicken sandwich, it was overcooked.. super dry.. no slaw on it..and not at all up to the standards they normally have. We also got one of the pizzas.. ( one w/ the arugula and pine nuts & ranch dressing)I had forgotten the last time we got one.. it seemed like they had changed their dough. It took us forever to try but are now so glad we came! Just might turn in to one of our favorite places. I love the atmosphere. Cozy, but plenty of seating. Lighting is low. It was busy, but you could still hear yourself talk. We were seated in the front of the restaurant, which faces the road. It's a bit more spread out in this area than in the middle of the restaurant. On one side they have tables set up in a U-shape, which seems like a great option for large group conversation. We ordered the special appetizer of warm Swamp Rabbit stecca bread with melted brie, prosciutto, bacon jam and baby greens. Oh my! The flavor combinations were so on point, I could have made a meal of this. As my entree I initially attempted to order the Tomato Pie but, alas, it is out of season. Not being a fish lover I was hesitant to order the catfish, but seeing that it is cooked with an Asian glaze and topped with a spicy peach melt, I was willing to take a chance. Hub ordered the shrimp scampi with cilantro lime butter and zucchini noodles. Within minutes, our beautifully presented entrees were served. The catfish had seared edges that provided a nice crunch with the combination of sweet and savory flavors and the creaminess of the grits. I also substituted the collards for the vegetable of the day, which was a slaw-like combo of asparagus pieces and other veggies. Absolutely delicious! Hub's scampi had such a fresh and not heavy buttery flavor, along with perfectly cooked shrimp. No dessert for us as we were stuffed! They sounded decadent and worth a try next time. Went here for a Friday lunch with coworkers! Had a really hard time figuring out what I wanted to eat, but I eventually decided on the shrimp burger with a side of grits, which seems to be what they're known for. I also tried a slice of their s+p pizza. The food was fantastic... whatever sauce they put on the shrimp burger was to die for. The grits were creamy and flavorful, and the pizza was also great. Everything tasted fresh and hot! The inside of the restaurant is so cool! It's classy but not stuffy. It's very open and comfortable, but it can get a little loud when it's busy. The service was good too. The waiter was attentive and was there if needed, but wasn't pushy at any point. I know I'll be coming back for dinner, and I'm sure I'll get a pizza to go to take home. Another great Greenville restaurant! I always get their Cheeseburger Salad! It is served with homemade zucchini pickles, red onion, tomato and romaine with homemade come back dressing. The pickles are so good, I always ask for extra. On a side note, the salad normally comes topped with fries which I decline. They are happy to accommodate special requests. I met a girlfriend here for dinner, and I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. There is a large parking lot, which is a big plus, because this place is popular! Our server was beyond fantastic-didn't hover, gave us time to chat and look over the menu, and complimented our selections. The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered ricotta meatballs that were served surrounded by grits, and tomato pie. My girlfriend ordered the meatballs and the flash fried beets-she was equally impressed. The tomato pie came with a spinach salad that was one of the best salads I've ever eaten. So good. If you are a foodie, I highly recommend checking this place out.
