Decided to do the King Kong drive-through for their gyro salad. Craving a little green and a low carb dinner. I have to admit that I went into shock when I was told that my bill was over $22 for the salad! The person at the window had asked me if I was paying cash or card and when I said card handed me a tablet to complete the transaction at that point I asked if there was a charge for the credit card transaction and I was informed that there was an additional charge. I explained that it would be beneficial to them to explain that to folks before they choose a credit card re : the added fee. I really do like their salads however, I have to admit that for the portion offered I thought that the price was a little bit high and it seems like there is less meat in the dish. Add that to a new credit card fee and I think I will reconsider this as a stopping point in the future. read more

The flavor of the burger was okay. The gyro was really good, but for the price I can't see myself ever coming back. We asked for no onions on the bacon cheeseburger and there were many strings of raw onion on top. We went at 6PM and there was no one at all in the drive thru line. Only a couple cars in the parking lot. I really did not want to give King Kong a try after many years, but my fiancé really wanted to. Sadly, we were both let down. I paid about $20 for my double Kong burger and it was MASSIVE! I should have gotten the single, I didn't know it would be so huge! But it was incredible, it tastes so fresh and the produce on the burger was crisp and perfect. I went through the drive thru, it took them a bit to make my burger but not too long. My favorite place from back in the day is losing its charm. And I'm sadly ok with it because Freddy's, Five Guys et al have started replacing them. Now, we have enjoyed this establishment many times over the years, but it has gone downhill in the last few. The burger was not juicy and was actually cold. Cold! We ate in restaurant, and the burger was ice cold! It had all the components of a good burger, tomato, onion, pickle and melted cheese - but ice cold meat. And a cold burger can not have juicyness. The gyro was simply average. It was not exciting, and could have come from any gyro shop. Average veg, sauce and meat. Just 'eh. The price was extraordinary. The burger was about $12 with cheese plus extra for fries and the drink was extra as well. The gyro was around $14 plus drink. Used to go to King Kong because the food was tasty and affordable. Dining room is open during COVID, they did a good job cleaning and creating a socially distant ordering process. It's super close to the zoo, and the food is great (and fast). Defintely get the Gyro plate! Generous portions, especially if you order extra meet. We also tried the Greek salad, which was delicious and a kids chicken finger meal (which was frozen reheated). I've always kind of enjoyed King Kong and view it as a local Omaha chain, similar to those who like La Casa or Broncos. King Kong is a grill that specializes in burgers, gyros, and phillies + some steaks and other stuff. There are many many other places that do each one much better than King Kong and I've actually found the gyros at King Kong to be fairly average. El Basha and several other places are better to get a gyro. The burgers are also somewhat average at King Kong. They're fairly large, so the value is there. Flavor wise, it's lacking, though. The phillies are very solid at King Kong and our favorite thing to order there. They've been consistent over the years and my favorite is a philly combo (pretty much all veggies in it, not on the menu but just tell them and they'll know). The fries are always well seasoned and crispy. As a whole, I wouldn't come to King Kong if you were looking specifically for a burger or gyro. Go down to Dinkers or Stellas for burgers or El basha or Legacy for gyros. For phillies, King Kong is pretty good. Not sure if I would trust the steaks and such here but I haven't eaten them, so they could be great for all I know. read more

Oh boy, where do I begin? Let's start with the burgers....these babies are really big. I hate to unhinge my jaw to get my mouth around it. I guess that's what they meant by kong sized The onion rings were pretty good. Crispy and not too greasy . I would definitely order them again. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of the overall ambience of the place. I am sorry to say it smelled like a sour mop. I'm not sure if that is a feature to make it an authentic burger joint, but it certainly isn't helping the flavors. So, my advice if your brave enough to go, hold your nose and get it to go. That way you can enjoy the food without the funky odor. Who knows, maybe you'll get a laugh out of the whole experience. There was a time when King King was a definite contender for the best gyro in Omaha. But those days are past, the meat is over cooked to the point of mushiness and it's tasteless. No longer do the carve your meat off the spit, instead it's in a steam table being overwarmed all day. And I ordered an extra side of tzaziki sauce and it was nothing but sour cream, not even flavored with anything, just plain old sour cream. Wish I could give -10 stars, because they used to be awesome and now I would recommend BK's gyro over KIng Kong. read more

Very new to Omaha. Will never eat here again, here is why: 1. Cashier blatantly expressed exasperation with me as I was trying to decide on my order. Nothing worse than a garbage attitude in the customer service industry. 2. My "inconvenient" order (for the cashier anyways) cost me nearly $28 for two sandwhiches with no sides or drinks 3. The sandwhiches were supposedly Philly Cheese Steaks but, I could hardly detect any cheese, the meat was tough, the bread was soggy, and it was so salty I had to drink a gallon of water after. I ordered the burger on the menu with bacon and I was charged for the bacon the burger is already $14.00 they added cheese when I said no cheese and I was charged for that. I also got charged for they said regular fries and a drink the total came out to $29.00 their regular fries are $5 I tell you this was the most expensive drink. If you're visiting the Zoo, this is the place to eat. Although the menu features the Kong burgers, I usually prefer the other fare. They have the cheapest steaks in town, especially when they're on special on Sunday and Wednesday ($9.99). The flavor is good, and they're fairly tender. The gyros are my favorite entree, though I usually pull off some of the onions. The Tzatziki sauce on the gyros isn't always consistent; recently it's been more like runny sour cream, but I still like it. The salads come with oil/vinegar dressing, olives, feta cheese, tomatoes, and a pepper. If you order an entree salad, you can get it with a generous helping of Gyro meat. Although there isn't much choice in how the salad is prepared, it's one of the best bets in this part of Omaha for something bordering on healthy. They have an unusual rice+potato+bean side dish. The fries are consistently good, with a generous helping of seasoned salt. Don't forget to try the sweet, flaky baklava. As of fall, 2015, prices ranged from $7.49 for a 1/2 pound single hamburger to $19.99 for a 2-pound Super Kong burger with bacon or mushrooms. Once or twice a year, as a gift to the community, the owner opens the doors and provides free meals to everyone. This is a spectacular act of generosity. The atmosphere is very informal, with all manner of King Kong and gorilla-themed decorations--if you have kids, "count how many gorillas you see" is a great activity here. The gyro is made up of what you can loosely chop up and stuff on a pita bread to call it a 'sandwich', but I'm sure your future will be filled with onion breath and straining your jaw to fit that sucker in your mouth. Was a little concerned about how the cook plucked a wayward gyro meat off the counter and tossed it in the container with glove free hands while he was waiting for the grill to heat. Another worker was chewing away maskless in the same vicinity while the first chef tossed the gyro meat container onto the grill, ready to cook. Not the best hygiene, is it? King Kong had the best french fries in Omaha. The seasoning is to die for and they're always hot and crispy. I also just tried their steak after being skeptical for a while that a place with a drive thru could have a good steak. I could not have been more wrong. For $15 I got one of the juiciest, well-seasoned steaks that I've ever had from a restaurant. It was cooked perfectly medium rare and huge for the price! They cook everything fresh to order, so it's worth the wait. My usual go-to order used to be the philly which is also amazing, but now it might be the steak! King Kong has become one of the Iconic fast food gyro/steak/burger chains here in Omaha. The food is for sure "Kong" Sized. You will get plenty and if you get the daily specials the prices are pretty good!. I usually get the Gyros and depending on the day and location you go they are all a bit different. Some the meat is thin and warm. other days the meat is thin and crispy with a good char on it. Then sometimes the meat is thick cut (those are my favorite) The fries are nothing special, The salads are great with fresh tomatoes, olives and some good chunk sizes of feta. King Kong came recommended to me from a colleague. Under the impression that they served inappropriately oversized burgers, it seemed like the logical place to grab some food after an inadvertent 24 hr fast. Drive through was open at 10:30 on a Sunday night, which worked great for me. Ordering was tricky. They don't have "combos," so it's all a la carte. I ordered the king double and some fries. They were out of Coke Zero- strike one. The fries looked like they'd be soggy, but they were surprisingly crispy. The seasoning (Greek seasoning of some kind) was a nice touch. Ketchup would have been a better one. As for the burger, this is where I'm stumped. They did so many of the right things, but it didn't blow me away, despite my appetite. They toasted the bun, put a healthy piece of lettuce on the bottom bun (to prevent meat grease from making it soggy), put the tomato/onion/pickle on top of that, then two patties/cheese, followed by the top bun. That's pretty much all of the ingredients that I put on my own burgers. (Although admittedly, I finely dice my onions and mix them into my patties). It looked like there was some seasoning on the patty too. Despite all of this execution, the burger just wasn't great. It was kind of bland actually. I might come back to give them another try.
