The Cantonese and Szechuan here is great! I'm someone with a constant hankering for good Cantonese and Szechuan, and this place hit the spot in every respect. Unlike many similar restaurants, the meat was plentiful and really lean, the vegetables were excellently cut, and the spices and sauce were surprisingly high quality. The spice level was definitely on the higher end, which was perfect. Unlike many restaurants in this area, the service (and food!) was lightning fast. I found King Kee on one of the weekly emails from Yelp informing about new places that have opened up so decided to give it a try for dinner a couple of days ago. Upon entering I was greeted by an empty hostess station so proceeded inside the restaurant where I was immediately shown to a table. I told the server that I only wanted to get something to-go so she got me a menu. I saw a nice, clean and bright restaurant. The table that I sat on was clean unlike most other Chinese places. After going through the menu I decided to get the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup ($8.99) to-go. I could pay by card and prices also seemed pretty cheap for the Union Square area. Wait time was under 10 minutes and I was on my way. Unfortunately this is where the good news stops. I got a single container with the noodles and soup. On the top inch or so were some pieces of beef, rest was noodles and soup. I was not sure whether these were thin noodles or thick noodles but my gut say they were thin noodles that had absorbed the watery soup and turned into thick noodles. They had zero texture and felt like scooping up soft mushy baby food. The soup was a tasteless broth that seemed to be plain water. The few pieces of beef on top were low quality cuts that were chewy and rubbery. Overall this was just plain bad. I think that this would have been slightly better if I had dined in and have been like a two star rating but putting the noodles into the same container as the broth sealed their fate. I'm not sure if there is an option but ask for the noodles on the side if you plan to get any noodle soup to-go as they are too cheap to provide an extra container for the noodles. What a letdown. Clean restaurant, reasonable prices and attentive service, but unfortunately the food just does not match up. read more

I had to throw my Mongolian Beef and my Wonton soup away, due to old Vegetables that were in both. I have ordered from them twice before and it was delicious it was on its way to be one of my favorite restaurants. Unfortunately I will never buy food from them again it even smelled awful. If I could give 0 star, I would. The food is horrible! It's very oily and tasteless. Chinese food court taste better. We took the beef chow fun, spicy chicken and seafood and tofu soup. The soup was the only thing that was decent, noodle and spicy chicken were super oily and blend. We felt horrible and sick after the meal. After check in on Yelp, I saw there was a promotion, I asked the waitress about it, and she said that it doesn't apply to their restaurant. It's the only restaurant in the city. If they are not going to honor the promotion, then why even post it?! After ordering, I told the waitress that I'm highly allergic to peanuts. She answered "ok, what about peanut oil, you're ok with it?" I mean really!? Seriously!! Didn't I just tell her that I'm highly allergic to peanuts?! Than she said that they don't have peanut oil. So I am a few days late in posting this review but my friend and I wanted Chinese food for our last night in SF so we decided to give King Kee a try. After a rush hour Uber ride to get there, we found King Kee. The sign is a bit hard to find but it's on the corner of the street a bit below street level. You can easily watch people waking by whole enjoying dinner. I had the Mongolian Beef and it was good. Spicy and full of tender beef. The only have white rice which was a bit disappointing but not that big of deal. My friend had the Kung Pao Chicken and he said it was good (I didn't try it-i don't like peanuts in my food). We split and order if spring rolls that was also very good-really crispy. Overall I enjoyed King Kee and would go back. read more

This place is more of just Cantonese food with a few szechuan options. Located near Powell station, it's pretty central to the city and easy to get to. There are two levels to this restaurant, and when we went during lunch there weren't many people and our group of 9 got seated immediately upstairs. Service: All the servers were very friendly and attentive. My friend was downing his water and kept being surprised that his water had been refilled immediately each time. Someone who looked like the manager came over and checked in to make sure we were enjoying our food. Food: Most of us ordered Flaming Spicy Chicken from the lunch menu (ranges $13-15 and comes with the soup of the day and a bowl of rice), spicy beef noodle soup ($9) or roasted duck noodle soup from the regular menu ($9.50). The flaming spicy chicken is not really crazy spicy that you'd expect at a szechuan place.. it was just mildly spicy. But had a weird texture created by the ground peppercorns. The two soups were huge in serving and the broth was flavorful and umami. They didn't skimp out on the duck either. Decent food, p good prices, and easy to get large tables. Saw this place was close to where we were staying so we decided to stop in for lunch. The place is cute, and it's a clean restaurant. We ordered the beef scallion pancakes and the combo fried rice since we weren't super hungry. The beef scallion pancakes were good with a great texture and flavor. They give you six, and this was definitely enough to share for an appetizer. The combo fried rice was pretty simple, just basic Chinese fried rice. BEWARE OF THE BILL!!!! My family wanted to go to an asian restaurant for dinner, and King Kee happened to be a few blocks from our hotel. The pictures and decent pricing of the dishes outside the restaurant appealed to us so we decided to give this restaurant a try. We were seated immediately and given our menus. Everything seemed to be good. However when we began ordering, the waitress tried to convince us to buy the most expensive dishes even though we already ordered many dishes: Peking duck, soup dumplings, Ho fun, chow mein, tofu soup, and more. We refused to buy any of the overpriced dishes, and the waitress proceeded to ask us whether we wanted anything to drink: tea or water. It is an asian tradition to drink tea, and for the restaurant to serve us either water or tea before we even ask. The food tasted average, but what got us questioning was the Peking duck. We ordered half a duck here, since we ordered a full Peking duck just yesterday at another restaurant. The size of half the Peking duck was NOTHING compared to what we had expected. There were about 7 pieces of duck, and its taste did not surpass the other restaurant's. Well that's acceptable considering that it is cheaper at this restaurant by $8. However the size of the dish we were served was just inexcusable. We even had to ask for the sauce to go with the Peking duck, even though it is usually served with it. At the end, we were given the bill. It was surprisingly expensive considering how we thought this was a cheap restaurant before we entered. So we went through the orders and cost, and we saw that they added 15% tip(service charge) into our total cost already. That happens sometimes in restaurants, but this place did not tell us at all. Most people would pay the total price and not notice that the tip had already been factored in. This makes it easier for customers to pay the tip again(double tip), without realizing it. That wasn't the only misdeed. We saw on the order: Tea -- $5.00. WHAT KIND OF TEA COSTS $5.00???? In asian restaurants, tea is usually served for free without customers even asking. But instead, they asked us if we wanted tea or water, giving us the impression that they are both free, as water is usually free in every restaurant. When we asked for tea, they didn't even inform us that there will be a price for it. My family was so astounded that they could rip us off like that. All in all, we DO NOT recommend this place. If you do decide to go, please don't choose to have tea. I'm not sure about water either, it might have a price tag to it too. And it definitely isn't worth it. Also, please check your receipt before falling for the trap of double tipping. I wish that I had read more reviews from here before I went. But this place should know that giving this type of service is not how you do business. read more

My family and I ended up eating here, because everything else was either closed or had a long like up. Food: it's okay. Not good, but not gross. Small portions. Ambiance: dirty. Silverware had leftover food stuck on it. Places had different speckles. Service: the waiter and the rest of the staff are very rude and always seem to be in a hurry. They'll partially listen to you while walking away and not acknowledging you. Heads up: the Yelp check-in deal doesn't work. The server said, "We don't accept that deal. It's not real." Great service and friendly helpful staff. Restaurant was clean and quiet and the food was absolutely wonderful. They have foods here prepared with spices that are referred to as "Explosively hot" or "Numbing hot." I would suggest if you are a fan of hot food that you try the "Numbing hot." Being located in San Francisco, I expected better Chinese food than what we had at King Kee. I wanted to order some traditional dishes to see how they compare to the establishments on the East Coast, and throughout my travels in the US. We ordered the General Tso and Beef and Broccoli with Won Ton soup for an appetizer. The Beef and Broccoli was bland. The won ton soup had a slightly weird taste and the General Tso was okay. I've had much better experiences with Chinese food here in VA Beach. If you're looking for an elevated version of your favorite Chinese dishes, this is not the place. I must say you can't find a Chinese restaurant better than King Kee here in downtown San Francisco. The Szechuan dishes smell so nice. The taste is just like the authentic one.
