Finally a Chinese restaurant that has flavor, large portions, and very tasty!! We started with the egg rolls, they were huge, stuffed, and fried to perfection! My husband had the Kung Pao Chicken, his eyes lit up when he took his first bite! He couldn't believe how delicious his food was! He said we finally have a great Chinese restaurant! I had the sesame chicken and it was amazing! The chicken sizes were fairly large, there was a lot of chicken and was packed with flavor! This is the place. With the amazing pork & shrimp egg rolls! The best I have had in Houston area. Every time I go there people are getting the chicken wings. They all say they are the best but you have eight in an order so I haven't gotten yet because it's just me. We just had a very mediocre at best lunch at King Food. The server was very flat affected, not rude, but definitely not pleasant. We ordered two lunch specials, Beef & Mushrooms and King Delight. The hot and sour soup was sweet, and it wasn't the "sour" we tasted, it was sugar. The egg roll was good. The fried rice was bland. The dishes were identical with the exception of the meats in the two dishes; one had only beef with maybe more canned mushrooms, and the other had a mix of meats that included shrimp. I ordered though the king restaurant site though door dash and received my confirmation that my order was placed, card charged and when my order was ready I went I side to pick up. Lady told me she did not have my order and I showed her my email and where my card was charged. She checked the machine and receipts and told me she did not have my order and that I should have called it in. I said I order like this every time and that I always come there. She said I never saw you before and that I would need to order again cause they don't have my order. She then asked me if I sent the order to the right place and I again showed her my email with all THEIR information. At this point I was embarrassed and angry because I was out of money and I didn't receive my food . She basically laughed at me and told me she wasn't giving me anything. I came here because an older middle eastern man at a mall kiosk told me they had the best Asian food... so of course I listened to a complete stranger and gave it a shot. Aaaand it was fire !!!! The general chicken was amazing! The chicken wings (garlic) were absolutely delicious. The Vietnamese eggrolls hot and crispy. I had both beef and shrimp lo mein and again very good noodles very good flavor on both. If you like Mai's in downtown this definitely compares to that, maybe even better. I'd like to play a game called Age Yourself Without Using Numbers. King Food Chinese Restaurant has been around since at least when cassettes and big hair were all the rage. Personally, I can recall how some visits to JSC with out-of-town friends or family eons ago included lunch here. And when I had an apartment right on Bay Area as a young adult pursing a journalism undergrad, I used to treat UH-Clear Lake classmates here. A mishap with trying to buy tickets to a local culinary event this evening led me back to this longstanding eatery. Since it was me, the owner and a female relative of hers, and this couple, the restaurant was quiet save for Boyce Avenue being streamed over a flat screen near the front entrance. Finding a seat and being quickly tended to were a cinch. "Yeah, yeah, yeah! What did you have, John?" So before coming here, I took a quick look at the menu online and the combination platter caught my attention. I worked on the spicy tangy chicken combo platter, which resembled either Mongolian or kung pao chicken. The menu was an easy A from how it was put together to how it tasted. If only the entrée-to-rice ratio was even. The chicken was fresh and tasty, but there was more of it than the rice. Still, I recommend this item to any first-timers. Ooh, almost forgot. The combination platters come with fried rice, an egg roll, and your pick between hot and sour, wonton, and egg drop soups. I went with what I call my ol' reliable of Chinese restaurant soups, hot and sour. It was nice of the purported owner of the eatery to give me the bowl with a whole Sriracha bottle. I really enjoyed the soup, which was called for given the cold weather. Their beef spring rolls are an ideal meal starter as well. Since the restaurant is just down the road from NASA, it has seen its share of astronauts come through pre or post-launch. In fact, I remember when they had autographed pictures of some on display at the service counter. Only time will tell if King Food will another numerous amount of years. Obviously, it fared well at the peak of COVID-19 so I don't doubt it a bit. Dinner was winding down when this family of give or take five or six came in. They sat a few tables away from me. I heard the parents ask one of the boys of their thoughts on their meal. The kid supposedly said something to the effect of five stars. To paraphrase the mom, "You should put that on Yelp." The place isn't all that bad but it's not the greatest. The food sits out wayy too long which makes most of it super hard. The service is always good and the variety is good for the price. I just wish the chicken wasn't so hard. Atmosphere is what is expected for a buffet. Their Soda machine always seems out or needs to be changed. We contemplated writing this review but wanted to share for future changes from the restaurant, we came in on a Wednesday, not too busy. We were not addressed when we walked in until about 5 mins into standing at the front desk. We were then told to sit anywhere , and not served any drinks nor did we have a waiter come to take our order for another 25 mins. The two waiters walked by our table over 3-4 times to serve other customers that were already seated. We should have probably left then We finally got a waiter to our table and ordered our food. When the appetizer came out , one of the dumplings had a BITE taken out , not a broken in half, there were clear teeth marks. We told the waitress as she placed it on the table and she quickly grabbed it , didn't say a word to address it and brought it to the owner. Maybe 10 mins later the owner came out put a new plate of dumplings on our table , said "sorry" under his breath and quickly left The service being slow is one thing, but having food that looks like it was already eaten by someone was our sign to never come back. After visiting NASA, we decided to try this restaurant, especially with all the good reviews. The first thing I noticed was on the menu, it showed very clear that EVERYTHING on the menu was $1.00 more!. This should have been a red flag. Anyway, we ordered from the lunch menu. My daughter in law ordered the Beef with Chinese Vegetables, and I ordered the Shredded Spicy Pork. We quickly realized that we both had the same sauce. The menu says you can alter the level of spiciness. I am not sure what that that was supposed to mean. I asked the server why my sauce was not spicy. She didn't understand in English or Chinese. This is a superior hole in a wall Chinese restaurant. It's been open for as long as I've been born and serves traditional authentic Chinese food. I no longer live in Houston, but this is the first place I go to when I travel down. The parking is extremely easy to find, and the ambiance feels like you're sitting in a little home being served by your elders. When coming here, I always splurge out and get both the hot and sour soup & won ton soup. You can never go wrong with the general TSO especially during the lunch special promo. Ordered orange chicken which was a "chef special" so cost more. Hot and sour soup was good. Chicken Didn't come with any veggies, only fried rice because i forgot to ask for steamed. Fried rice was good. Also got an egg roll without any sauce. No one checked on me while eating. The meat is dark meat and some pieces tasted like old refrigerator reheated chicken-yuk. Absolutely love King Food! Been coming here for over 20 years and the food has stayed consistently great. I don't often eat in anymore but I take food to go a couple of times a month. The Vietnamese menu is better than the Chinese but both are good. My favorite item is the honey braised shrimp with vermicelli. We decided to dine in for dinner for the first time the other night. Being Vietnamese and the restaurant offering both viet and chinese food : I ordered com bo luc lac which is beef chunks sautéed in butter with onions, both regular and green and served with shredded lettuce, tomato's and fried rice with a side of fish sauce for additional flavor, like soy sauce. Omg, YUM!!! Felt like I was sitting at my moms kitchen table, it was that authentic. Hubby ordered the #47 King Food Delight, he said it was good too. Staff is friendly.
