    Upstairs kickboxing area

*** intense workout, hands on instructor *** Kickboxing class is located upstairs of Matador gym. If you use the main entrance (double glass doors), the stairs on the right lead you upstairs to kickboxing area. Mike, the instructor, is very hands on. He likes to go around and check on his students to make sure there's proper form and alignment especially if you're a beginner. Other workout places kind of show me a few things then leave me on my own to figure things out. With Mike, he really takes his time with beginners to make sure they're getting techniques down so you don't form bad habits. The class has some warm ups, kicking/hitting combos, and some drills in between to keep the heart rate up. As someone who mainly does yoga, I leave kickboxing feeling like a I had a major workout.

Warming up the class.... not you run of the mill kickboxing class!!!

When Michael Mills told me he was putting together a kickboxing training program program, I got excited. I first got to know Mike in a business setting, but it wasn't long before I started doing some weight training with him. As a guy that is very active, does triathlons and acts like he is 30 years younger than what his mom keeps telling him he is, Mike's workouts were a revelation to me. Precise, effective, informative and never had I been so sore, in all the right places, as I was after his sessions. So I knew that if he applied himself to a kickboxing program, I wanted in! I was not disappointed. I was joined by 3 other students. The chemistry was great and the class energy was high. There were very beginners as well as more seasoned ranges amonst us. For me, a little over competitive and with a lot of prior martial arts experience, I was able to work at my own pace/effort while encouraging and being encouraged by the other participants. The class was fun, supportive and intense (I left it all on the mats!) Michael is one of the brightest guys I know, inside and out of the gym. He has devoted his mind and energy into understanding how our bodies work and how to make them work better. He is also an accomplished kick boxer. As someone who, in his earlier days, has instructed Taekwondo to young people and possesses a black belt, I was impressed with his competency and style. He is able to combine power with technical proficiency... that is not easy! I have been a part of many other kickboxing classes/programs. I have found many 'kickboxing' classes are really just high intensity workouts... which is fine if that is all you desire. Few classes combine the technique development that Micheal brings to the class along with the intensity and effort to make it the best workout you could ask for. I do not know of another kickboxing class I could rate higher based upon technique development and workout intensity. If you have not experienced a workout with Micheal, and you want to develop your kickboxing chops, regardless of whether you are a beginner or proficient, you should take at least one class... then you will see what all the fuss is about!

It has a range of different treadmill levels for Levels 1-4. This allows me to self-regulate and go easier or faster depending on how I'm feeling that day. This allows me to sufficiently warm up and I feel like I'm getting the most out of my workout. You only switch once during the combo so I definitely can take my time and do quality reps. Seriously there is nothing more annoying that switching between workouts super quickly and I don't even have time to catch my breath so please keep this format!

Game changer and much better use of space. I've been liking this new format because it added room for the strength and weight-training portion of the class. The benches are really nice and each bench has your own set of weights ranging from 7.5 to 25 pounds. Not having to get the weights you think you'll need for class is really helpful. For me, I still average around 2-3 miles per Combo class and that's perfect for me. This new format helps me hit more muscle groups than before! I also like the screens showing the strength moves on the strength side so it's easier to remember. Instructors and staff are all still amazing and welcoming. Definitely a class worth checking out!

Committing to just one gym is difficult when each person goes through their productive, creative, or hibernation periods. I've wanted a place that made me look forward to going and not finding reasons to skip out. After some time with ClassPass, a 45-day workout challenge and a dozen-full of memorable buddy pass classes later, I finally made a decision I've been happy with since. Basecamp for the win. Love their lower to upper to full body workout schedule, the alternation between cardio and strength, the change/rotation of class layouts, their equipment, and of course, the instructors and team themselves. Special appreciation for the 9am goers because they became a solid community for me when I was going through some post-grad life transitions and turbulence. Somehow, when I was considering what to properly invest in while sacrificing to save money from other things, this was a good alternative investment that has sparked back some love for workout classes again. Well-deserved shout outs to Coaches Nick, Jacqueline, and Oliver and the front desk team. If you're looking for a motivating space, it's a good place for a comeback and a fresh start. Since F45 is a franchise, it's pretty fun to think that people across the world are doing the exact same workout as we are here in Pasadena. When traveling to different states, or even other countries, I've been able to visit studios there and I love the familiarity of it. There's no awkwardness or intimidation factor since it feels like home. The Pasadena studio is family-owned and the owners, Gabe & Michelle, take feedback and concerns seriously. They're always looking for ways to make the experience better and I love that personal touch. They've put a huge emphasis on building community among the members so that the studio isn't just a place to exercise but a place to form friendships. The coaches at Pasadena make the effort to get to know the members personally and are super friendly and motivating. In fact, there's one right across the street from this location I would recommend (I'll leave it up to you to Google it). If you're looking for the best classic style Crossfit gym, then definitely don't go here. This place is only but a shadow of its former self. Since the current owners unaffiliated the gym from the brand, the programming and membership has taken a sharp decline. They incorporated classes that resembled more of a base camp or something Hyrox adjacent. No one really cared about the brand of CrossFit, we cared for the workouts, and sadly those are long gone. Feedback that was given to the owners went ignored for too long and eventually it became too late. There's been a mass exodus of loyal and competitive members since then and the atmosphere just doesn't feel the same anymore. The demographic currently trends to an older age group and less competitive/advanced. Those aren't necessarily bad things but it might certainly might alter your preference.

Been training in the ancient art of boxing with kicks for more than a decade now at a few gyms in…read moreand around L.A., and Classic Kickboxing by far is the CLEANEST. In fact, of all the gyms I've been to - including the ones that fit into the LA/24 Hour Fitness mould - this spot in the heart of Old Town Pasadena still remains the most diligent in terms of hygiene. And that's something that's often overlooked in gyms, especially ones that specialize in contact training and use mats. You can easily pick up a case of staph or any other crap that will do serious harm to your body if your gym floors and equipment are filthy and unkempt. (Google Ben Askren if you want to know what can happen to you if you train in a filthy gym.) Mauricio, Classic Kickboxing's owner/instructor, absolutely ensures that his establishment stays clean by reminding everyone to sanitize their stations after each session. That means wiping down the bags, mats, and everything else you've soiled. On that tangent, I know some other reviewers have complained about Mauricio being too militant about his gym's cleanliness, or - strangely enough - even bitched and moaned about the facility not being clean at all. I seriously doubt they've been to many other gyms. His cleaning regimen is not only for your safety, but others as well. Speaking of Mauricio, he is an excellent technical instructor and a really approachable guy. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He is there to teach you! If you watch his instruction closely, you can see why he is a former Colombian kickboxing champ; his form and technique is excellent, especially his kicks, which he was known for during his career. You will definitely learn proper technique here if you pay attention. Mauricio's kickboxing classes are group instruction and ALL levels of skill are welcomed. Classes run for about 40 to 45 minutes or so and they involve striking and kicking drills, with some form of plyo in between. The last few minutes are meant for core/abs work and light stretching. Is it difficult? It really all depends on how much effort you put into it. You can move at your own pace for sure and nobody will call you out on it (I know some gyms use shame as a type of tactic to motivate you; works for some, most others not so much). But Classic Kickboxing really is a stress-free establishment that rewards those who put their all into their workouts. Other things to note: - The gym is big and beautiful to look at. Lots of heavy bags, lots of space. The other side of the facility has a full ring and another large room. This area is for private instruction only. - They have secured lockers on-site in case you'd like to stow away your valuables. - Parking is paid on the streets nearby, which is ideal. But if you can't find a spot, there are a lot of garages in the area within walking distance. - Mauricio is the primary kickboxing instructor. He has a couple others, but I'd recommend taking his class first (see their online schedule) if you're new. - His other instructors teach boxing and judo. One of his boxing instructors, Christian, was a sparring partner for former world champ Vasiliy Lomachenko. That says quite a lot. - Monthly dues are fair, and compared to the other kickboxing gyms I've been to, actually a bit cheaper. You schedule classes online through their website, or on the Mindbody app. - Best of all, this gym is MEATHEAD-free. Of all the contact gyms I've been to, there's always at least one fragile, big-ego type who walks around like they're the next big thing and tries to pick up on anyone who walks by. If they're here, I haven't seen them at all. And I'm here quite a bit. I believe Mauricio can spot these alpha fail types very quickly and "discourages" them from coming back. Bottom line: Classic Kickboxing is a fun, great workout in a stress-free, meathead-free, and super-clean environment. You couldn't ask for much more than that.
