I have come here 9 or 10 times. I take the Beginning Kickboxing class at 7:30p, which is offered Monday thru Thursday. Boxing hip hop playing, The atmosphere is like a serious mixed martial arts training center for boxing, kickboxing and jiu jitsu, plus some private 1 on 1 training. It is located UNDERGROUND next to new Taco Libre on Mills Place, 3 stores south of Colorado. It is such a quality trainer, great workout and an affordable price, which keeps me coming back. The class usually has 15-20 people attending of various ages. It's a bit busier in summer. Program: some moving warm ups, a bunch of kickboxing combos with the bag, a bit of non-touching sparring paired up, then some killer sit-up/plank/squats/burpees. Pros: Instructor Heinrich really corrects you on your form. Non-stop 60 minute cardio workout with 1 break. Unlike many kickbox fitness classes, I feel like this one teachers you proper technique and form. I sweat so much here that it drips onto the mat and from forehead into my eyes. It's that intense. Cons: Parking is a hassle cuz its downtown Pasadena. The kick bags are a little hard. The men get a little stinky, because they all working so hard. There is no changing area, just the small restroom. All these I'm fine with (just letting other pickier people know), which is why I keep coming back. Try the 90 min free public lots such as DeLacey Garage or Schoolhouse Garage, take the Goldline light rail, which is an easy 10 minute walk from Memorial Park (go 3 blocks south, 1 block west to the alley). read more

We tried their group boxing class and it was good. I'd say a 7/10. The class was packed though for the small area they have. The teacher was really nice and helpful, he kicked our butts! What I didn't like was that everyone was barefoot and had to step in this bucket to "clean" our feet. I felt that was disgusting with all the people in the class; men, women, sweaty, and there was a kids class right before. That really turned me off. When I asked about pricing just for the boxing classes I was told $350/month for two people (adult and kid) because they offer other classes like MMA and stuff. I told the young man that was at the front desk that I was not interested in those classes but he told me the price is standard for everything. He told me that I can reach out to the owner to inquire. I lost the card he gave me and got busy with other stuff and realized no one has called and asked how was the try out class or inquired if I was interested in joining. Needless to say this gym is more for people who doesn't mind being a number. For $350/month I would have to be more than a number. read more

I have been to few different gyms. Some include Krav Maga Unyted DTLA, selva, and UFC. I have never felt a true sense of community before fight academy. Not only that but everyone is truly humble from the PROS who train along side you, to the PROS who train you, to the amateurs that are learning with you. The facility is always clean and doesn't have that strong smell that makes you think twice about your choices. I don't feel like I'm going to get ringworm like I did at other gyms. The coaches are constantly cleaning the mats and the equipment is not old and dated. Everything is fresh and new. Every person is always in a good mood and there are no bullies here. It says a lot about a places when people are throwing and receiving punches but still there are smiles everywhere. There definitely are elite level fighters but no one takes Advantage of anyone. No one will make you feel less than. Everyone is there to learn from each other. Definitely the best! read more

I found this place through Class Pass and it's my favorite. So far I've taken intro to kickboxing. Love learning techniques, doing drills and practicing forms on the punching bags. Cardio kickboxing is intense!! My arms still sore from yesterday!! You punch and kick the whole hour on the bags. Nice clean space. Only con is the parking! This is a very special gym. Here are 5 things I like about Fight Academy: 1- The people: everybody here is kind, caring, and welcoming. This is true for all the coaches as well as the students. Coach Savant, the owner and head coach cares about each and every student. He sets a standard for excellence and keeps everything organized and clean. I imagine that his mindset in the way he runs this place and the way he teaches is shared by all the other coaches who extend the same mindset to the students. In addition to coach Savant, there are many other excellent coaches: Ako, Niko, Elwig, and Heinrich are the ones I have had the pleasure to have as instructors. The students are all very down-to-earth. I feel like when you enter this place, everybody leaves their ego at the door. I have partnered with a lot of people who were significantly stronger, faster, and more experienced than I am, and every time I was amazed at how people took care to adjust to my level and help me learn. In particular, there is a form of unwritten agreement for the sparring etiquette that people adopt. People seem to truly pay attention to avoid injuring their sparring partners while giving them a hard workout. 2- The instruction: The coaches ensure you learn things in a balanced way. The form, the force, the speed, and the power that go into each technique are nicely broken down and taught very clearly. The sessions are usually intense. 90% of the time I walk out of Fight Academy having pushed myself to the limit of my strength and cardio. The coaches really push you to get better, develop stamina, and become stronger, and your fellow students support and cheer you along the way as complement to the coaches' encouragements. 3- The physical space: the gym has 3 distinct areas, one suitable for striking (boxing and kickboxing), one suitable for MMA and grappling, and one for weight training, stretching, etc. As stated earlier, it is kept very clean and organized. The AC works well and there are good ventilation fans. It's a really neat facility. The only things that would have made it even better would be a higher ceiling, and possibly a locker and shower section. Given the size of the facility, I am happy that the available area is maximized for exercise and I don't really care about locker/shower. All in all, the space is used very efficiently and is well-maintained. 4- The location: the Oldtown Pasadena location has multiple parking lots within walking distance. The parking is a mere $1. The closest parking is DeLacey (1-2 minutes walk). If you come to the morning classes, street parking is free until 11am. If you want to grab something to eat or drink after your class, there is a lot of choice. 5- The membership: the monthly fee is as cheap or as expensive as the inverse of your attendance frequency. One thing I really appreciate is the simplicity and flexibility. There is not set up fee. Your monthly fee is charged any day of the month you start (you are not tied to the beginning of the month). You can suspend and resume if needed. So if you know in advance that you'll be unavailable for an extended amount of time because of travel, family, business, health, etc. you can cancel your membership and resume upon your return without penalty. There are many more things I like about Fight Academy, but the above cover most of the essential facets of this very unique gym. read more

Highly recommended place to learn Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Tai and Boxing. It is my very first time trying out kickboxing and I have totally no clue what it is like. However after my very first class, I fall in love with Kickboxing. Thumbs up to Anko and Savant! They are both amazing instructors, they makes the lesson very enjoyable! My son just finished his 3 free classes and we decided to sign him up for a monthly membership because he absolutely loves it. This is a very welcoming studio with fantastic staff. I was happy to find that they live up to the reviews. My son is 12 and a little too big for the kids classes so he has taken the adult classes. The instructors have been able to help get him up to speed as a beginner and the more experienced adults in the class are very welcoming and encouraging to him. There is no 'clique ' environment here where you feel like an outsider. The instructors seem to be very into keeping a positive environment. Also, I don't know how they do it, but it doesn't smell bad! It's full of sweaty bodies in there but it usually smells pretty fresh and isn't too stuffy, even though it's a basement gym. It's very spacious and clean. The classes look so fun, I might have to join too! read more

I joined yesterday. I'm already in decent shape so I don't need incessant coaching or much assistance; I just appreciate the mental clarity I get from moving my body without thinking about what I should do next. Savant is a professional; he's concise & direct. He has good business and leadership skills because his employees follow professional protocol as well (they yell 'Fight Academy!' at the end of class which I think is a cool custom). I've been training at Fight Academy for 6 years and it's the first workout that I can say I really love! I've worked out for years, but it was so often me dragging myself through monotonous workouts, just so that I could stay in shape. When I train at FA, I know I'm going to have a great time! I've learned skills and had fun, while getting into the best shape of my life. As a not-too-athletic woman (haha), I was really intimidated to walk in the doors. I absolutely adore it here - you'll feel right at home even on your very first day! The instructors here take their time and put in all the effort to ensure you're not only learning the correct technique and form, but you're also getting accustomed to the terms they use. I take kickboxing with Heinrich on Wednesday's and he's absolutely patient with me (because it's obvious I'm the girliest of girls, and definitely have never fought once in my life). I had high expectations coming to this place because of the reviews. I signed up through classpass for the 6:30am class. It says to arrive 15 mins early for first timers so we did. The instructor was at least 5 mins late and we started class probably 6:45. They have gloves to borrow but not hand wraps. The gloves were wet and didn't smell good. Then we follow the instructor to the boxing area. There are cubbies to put your stuff in and you go into the mat barefoot. Online it says the class is mostly bag work and it was NOT. Most people were paired up and sparred each other. I appreciate that it was more functional but it was not what I signed up for. Newbies worked with the instructor but had to wait for your turn Then I had to pay for parking because we got out of class late. I'm sure the instructor had good intentions but starting the class late is my biggest pet peeve read more

Another great ClassPass find. I've taken Debbie's Afternoon Kickboxing class twice, and I love that she keeps the momentum going for the full hour. Punching, kicking, push-ups, and squats all over our section of the gym. It feels more cardio than boxing, but as a lady, I appreciate burning the calories vs. creating defined muscles (I get that from other workouts). Not a ton of instruction, so if you're looking to hone in on your boxing skills, this is prob not the class for you. Debbie has good energy and is welcoming, but it's hard to hear her. She's got a fierce kick, but an inside voice. If it's your first class, try to get a bag in the middle, near hers. No water fountain (bottles for purchase only). read more

I was introduced to Fight Academy by my friend/co-worker. His wife asked me to join the FIghTness Bootcamp when it was 1st rolled out and I did. I had been no stranger to weight training, but I had no prior experience with MMA, Ju Jitsu or Muay Thai. The coaches I trained with were attentive, offered guidance and were very supportive. The women's Bootcamp got me hooked and I joined the gym and started taking advantage of the wide range of classes offered. I feel very strong and empowered in the FA atmosphere. When you're new to training like this, it's good to practice with people who are more skilled than you and everyone is very encouraging and supportive. My wife and I started training at Fight Academy about 8 months ago. I hadn't exercised in 10 years and was at my highest weight ever at around 210. By training with Savant and Joe just a few days a week and mixing up my diet I was able to get down to 170-175 in just a few months. Fight Academy is not just an MMA gym it's a lifestyle. Imagine going to Ballys and getting a professional trainer any time you wanted to workout. That's exactly what you get at this gym. Egos are checked at the door and everyone at this gym supports each other. A lot of camps will claim they offer a family environment but nothing compares to the friendships formed here. I've been going to Fight Academy since the age of 20 and it was one of the best decisions i've made. Coming in with no experience at all, coach Savant Young and Joseph Del Real have taught me a lot and i feel truly honored to have them as coaches. Aside from great coaches all the members and other staff are great people all around, its really more like one big family. Everybody really works together and we help each other in the best way we can. Training with coach Savant has been a real good experience. He is a great teacher of the game who works hard to train his students and make great fighters like him. What i really enjoy about being coached by Savant is that he is able to teach every aspect of MMA but more important he's able to help us put it all together in a great way. Savant is a very wise person who uses that intelligence to progress in his own career and also teach his students. Coach Joseph is our striking coach and has a great way of teaching that is very effective and i find very fun and helpful. Joseph is very knowledgable of the Muay Thai art and boxing, along with some Tae Kwon Do and he is able to put it all together perfectly creating his own style. He is able to help each of our individual styles adapt to his fighting style which i believe is very important. Beginners & Ladies- if you're seeing this- hear me out. Are you a curious, looking to change up your workout because the elliptical at the gym is getting boring? Has boxing always been something you wanted to try, but were too afraid because it felt intimidating to be around a bunch of dudes (and some women) in incredible shape grunting or kicking the heck out of a bag lookin' like a street fighter character? Let's be honest, boxing gyms can be a bit intimidating..especially for a beginner like myself. But, I was looking to get in shape, and needed change. So I took a chance, fearing the worst. Yet, Fight Academy turned out to be more than I had hoped it would be. Fight Academy is community... it's family. Let's talk about the vibe for a minute: sure there's a bunch of bad ass people in there kicking butt (you will too!)- but all ego's are checked at the door. no one is in there trying to make you feel like an outsider or pumping their chests. In fact, everyone that is there to work out, especially the coaches, are really nice. Everyone is there for the same reason you would be- to challenge yourself, mind, and body, and succeed doing it. It is a good vibe all around- a nice mix of men and women. Friendly faces, good energy. I've been coming to FA for over a year now, I train one-on-one with Savant Young- the owner. This guy is cool AF. Challenges me to the max, and after each session I feel stronger, and my technique improves due to his guidance. He is patient, committed, and funny as hell. But when it's time to get down to business, that bell goes off and it's go time. If you are having any doubts about joining an MMA gym, it's completely normal. I had them too. But the first step is to push yourself out of your comfort zone, get your butt down the stairs of that gym and ask for Savant or any of the coaches there. Before coming to Fight Academy I was always intimidated by the idea of getting out of my comfort zone and not feeling comfortable at all at a gym with people I don't know. After joining fight academy all that went out the door. Immediately I felt the love, and care from the everyone there. The coaches are all AMAZING. Aside from making you laugh 99.9% of the time (which is the best when you're having a crap day) they truly care about helping people and are passionate about what they do.
