Been training in the ancient art of boxing with kicks for more than a decade now at a few gyms in and around L.A., and Classic Kickboxing by far is the CLEANEST. In fact, of all the gyms I've been to - including the ones that fit into the LA/24 Hour Fitness mould - this spot in the heart of Old Town Pasadena still remains the most diligent in terms of hygiene. And that's something that's often overlooked in gyms, especially ones that specialize in contact training and use mats. You can easily pick up a case of staph or any other crap that will do serious harm to your body if your gym floors and equipment are filthy and unkempt. (Google Ben Askren if you want to know what can happen to you if you train in a filthy gym.) Mauricio, Classic Kickboxing's owner/instructor, absolutely ensures that his establishment stays clean by reminding everyone to sanitize their stations after each session. That means wiping down the bags, mats, and everything else you've soiled. On that tangent, I know some other reviewers have complained about Mauricio being too militant about his gym's cleanliness, or - strangely enough - even bitched and moaned about the facility not being clean at all. I seriously doubt they've been to many other gyms. His cleaning regimen is not only for your safety, but others as well. Speaking of Mauricio, he is an excellent technical instructor and a really approachable guy. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He is there to teach you! If you watch his instruction closely, you can see why he is a former Colombian kickboxing champ; his form and technique is excellent, especially his kicks, which he was known for during his career. You will definitely learn proper technique here if you pay attention. Mauricio's kickboxing classes are group instruction and ALL levels of skill are welcomed. Classes run for about 40 to 45 minutes or so and they involve striking and kicking drills, with some form of plyo in between. The last few minutes are meant for core/abs work and light stretching. Is it difficult? It really all depends on how much effort you put into it. You can move at your own pace for sure and nobody will call you out on it (I know some gyms use shame as a type of tactic to motivate you; works for some, most others not so much). But Classic Kickboxing really is a stress-free establishment that rewards those who put their all into their workouts. Other things to note: - The gym is big and beautiful to look at. Lots of heavy bags, lots of space. The other side of the facility has a full ring and another large room. This area is for private instruction only. - They have secured lockers on-site in case you'd like to stow away your valuables. - Parking is paid on the streets nearby, which is ideal. But if you can't find a spot, there are a lot of garages in the area within walking distance. - Mauricio is the primary kickboxing instructor. He has a couple others, but I'd recommend taking his class first (see their online schedule) if you're new. - His other instructors teach boxing and judo. One of his boxing instructors, Christian, was a sparring partner for former world champ Vasiliy Lomachenko. That says quite a lot. - Monthly dues are fair, and compared to the other kickboxing gyms I've been to, actually a bit cheaper. You schedule classes online through their website, or on the Mindbody app. - Best of all, this gym is MEATHEAD-free. Of all the contact gyms I've been to, there's always at least one fragile, big-ego type who walks around like they're the next big thing and tries to pick up on anyone who walks by. If they're here, I haven't seen them at all. And I'm here quite a bit. I believe Mauricio can spot these alpha fail types very quickly and "discourages" them from coming back. Bottom line: Classic Kickboxing is a fun, great workout in a stress-free, meathead-free, and super-clean environment. You couldn't ask for much more than that. read more

I specifically looked into this gym because a friend of mine had previously lost 80 pounds coming here, and I wanted to give it a try--it did not disappoint! If you're looking for a workout that gets you sweating without any judgment, this is the perfect spot--no matter your size, shape, or fitness level. The classes focus on technique and fitness, so you're not sparring or fighting anyone. Mauricio, the owner, is incredibly welcoming and sweet, which makes the whole experience even better. I've been attending consistently and have already noticed a positive shift in how I feel about my body. Plus, it's such a great way to release any aggression! Ok I had to jump on here and respond to Alexa B.'s negative review down there. No, just no. I've been working out here for 7+ years and Mauricio is one of the most lovely, loyal, consistent and excellent humans. The place is also impressively clean. Her review is just a sign of the times- people just consume and spit out their thoughts without considering the small business, the humanity behind the space, the time it takes to really build a relationship and a business. Also, if that was her experience, she must have been rude to the management and entitled during her very short time there. Mauricio is a Columbian fighter, he's intense and committed. If an entitled newbie comes to consume and spit out toxic reviews, he won't bend to that. He's there everyday, sweating and pouring into his clients, trying to keep the place spotlessly clean and free from gym rats that come from a self serving fitness culture of consumption. So you should try out this gym- it's honestly incredible. Come in and listen, watch the technique, go slow, be kind, and be open. THE BEST MARTIAL ARTS GYM!!!!! First off, this gym is the most clean of any I've been to. I was so lucky to get to paint the mural in Mauricio's dojo, for which I was there during many off-hours when classes were not taking place. I got to witness first hand just how much Mauricio maintains and cleans the gym daily- mopping, sanitizing, etc. Seriously- every day. To the negative comment about wiping down mats and bags after every class- this is to keep the gym safe and clean for everyone and takes two minutes to do! It aligns with the respect each person has for the gym and one another. Apart from the cleanliness, this gym and its clients and trainers are nothing but welcoming and respectful. Classes are challenging yet stand apart from other gyms as they do not use the militant or punitive teaching style I have experienced elsewhere. So many other fitness spaces also have a culture of subtly body shaming via the mention of burning calories, getting toned, etc. which I find unhelpful and unwelcoming. I've never heard or felt this diet/body obsessed pressure at this gym. This has allowed me to become obsessed with the sport itself because it is challenging, fun, and feels good. Mauricio, Christian, and Phoebe are all friendly, kind, and helpful. They are all incredibly skilled and knowledgable teachers who make sure that all levels feel welcomed. I have been coming here for private and group classes for about 2.5 years now and I've waited far too long to submit this update. I have nothing but good things to say about Mauricio, Phoebe, Christian and Adriana. Absolutely lovely people. I have seriously come a very long way in my progress thanks to them. Whoever the sock account "Alexa B" really is.. is an absolute picky liar. Imagine complaining about the OWNER making sure the mats are cleaned and well maintained then talking about ventilation because you thought you might catch something.. my god. The only thing good that came from her review is that she said she isn't coming back.. BYE! This is an old building, however, Mauricio works incredibly hard with the cleanliness and upkeep. This man doesn't take a day off. Madame Alexa clearly doesn't own a business because she would know that small businesses would prefer to ask their lovely gym goers to clean up after themselves. This makes more sense to request others take care of their things for the next person as they can't buy new mats/bags etc every other month. Alexa my lovely, delete your review - you're an embarrassment to this sweet little city, and now I know what the B stands for. You either need a membership to Equinox or a therapist. I'm not one to leave negative reviews lightly, but after my experience at Kickboxing Pasadena, I feel compelled to share. I was initially excited to join a kickboxing gym closer to home, especially one with seemingly good reviews, but let me tell you, the reality of this place is far from what's advertised. My enthusiasm wore off within the first week. Why? Because of the owner, Mauricio--who, let's just say, has a personality that could make the Grinch look like a saint. First off, Mauricio has this bizarre obsession with his mats. Yes, I get it--gyms have rules. But here, you're constantly reminded (borderline berated) that you must not step on his "precious mats." And I'm not exaggerating when I say he refers to them like they're made of gold and not, you know, rubber that's supposed to absorb sweat and dirt in a gym. He even made a scene about it during a class when someone dared to step a toe out of line--completely humiliating them in front of everyone. Is that really how you treat paying members? Oh, but it doesn't end there. Mauricio has a bad habit of talking negatively about members, even when they're within earshot. I overheard him complaining about how someone "sweated too much" during their workout, as if they were committing a crime against humanity for, you know, doing what you're supposed to do in a gym. It's bad enough that the place reeks (because apparently cleaning isn't a priority here), but to then shame people for sweating in a kickboxing gym? The irony is laughable. And speaking of the cleanliness--or lack thereof--the place is gross. You'd expect a fitness facility to have decent hygiene standards, but nope. The equipment feels grimy, the bathrooms are worse than a gas station's on a bad day, and don't even get me started on the air quality inside. It's like they've never heard of ventilation. Or cleaning supplies. I was genuinely concerned about catching something every time I walked in. The management is just as bad. Good luck trying to resolve an issue or get a straight answer. The overall vibe is that they care more about controlling you with weird, nitpicky rules than fostering a positive community. Mauricio clearly runs the place with an iron fist--and not in a good way. He's unapproachable, dismissive, and honestly comes across as downright miserly about everything. If "Scroogey" was a Yelp category, Mauricio would get five stars for that alone. If you're looking for a place to feel supported, motivated, or even mildly comfortable, look elsewhere. Kickboxing Pasadena isn't it. Between the toxic energy from the owner, the unhygienic conditions, and the poorly managed classes, I can't in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. Recently started coming back after a long hiatus. Oh boy, I remember still hating the warmups just as badly 5 years ago! Bit the bullet and purchased a group of 10 classes and am so happy I did! Nothing has changed as far as I can remember. Come early to claim your spot and get set up. If you've forgotten how to wrap your hands, the front desk will help you out. Mauricio is a former national champion, why would you want to train with anybody else? He's a really down to earth guy, he walks around before and after class talking to students. He breaks down the movements for you so if you're not good at listening like me, you'll be able to catch on! Lockers by the front desk, bring your own lock! There's actually a shower inside the women's restroom, that's very rare for Pasadena (IMO); but you should take advantage of it if you need to be on the run! There is parking sort of everywhere! There's metered parking out on the front if you can find a spot. There's a lot across the street that'll come out to almost $10 during your class session. I park in the lot on Green Street and walk over. 90 minutes are free but because I like to get there early, I usually end up paying $2 -__-. read more

Mauricio is the absolute best! I was so nervous to try out kickboxing coming from no experience, and Mauricio was so welcoming and encouraging. He makes kickboxing super accessible while still giving you an amazing, challenging workout. I was totally hooked from that first class and have been coming regularly ever since! He bathrooms are nice, the studio is clean, and doesn't smell like a boxing gym at all. My favorite part is how judgement free it is. I'll be kicking the bag right next to a sweet, little old lady and then on my right will be a hardcore beefed out dude. Everyone keeps their eyes on their own bag and pushes themselves to their own limits, so no matter your skill level, we're all pouring sweat by the end. It's just an incredible atmosphere. You can't go wrong with any teacher either! Phoebe is amazing!! She breaks down technique that's really easy to understand and she goes hard! I am always sore for days after her class. Today's experience made me feel humiliated and sad. This is a long review but hear me out. So this is what happened: I had class pass 2 years ago and decided to join their monthly membership, so I told girl in the front desk to sign up for the monthly membership and after pay I will join the class, but she told me go take class now and come back to her after class to pay. So I did what she told me after class. I filled out all the form and give her my credit card like what she instructed me to do. She told me it's all done. So I asked her how do I check in next time? she told me just told us your name is "sum", but that's not my name tho! Then she said she made mistake, she need do it all over again for the membership form and need my card. Then the owner came to her and told her to write down my debit card information because the person who handle their transition work from home. I don't feel comfortable someone just write down my credit card and also seems their system is messy so I worry the future mistake they will create. Then I just decided to pay cash this time to avoid future drama. Then he start to told me just downloaded mind body app check in there! But my account is not even in their system MINDBODY app doesn't work like that ,So I did exactly what he said and downloaded app but it doesn't have monthly membership there! And he start to question me things are not related to the issue try to make me feel bad like : " are you late for class? You supposed to register on our website before you come. " But I came on time. At that point I was concerned about the messy system and felt very uncomfortable. so I told them how about paying cash. So they took my cash, and I asked for receipts, they said because I paid cash , they can't send me a receipt???? I even try to make it easier for them telling them how about just writing me a email says I paid as a receipt then. But the girl don't even know how to send a email??? I asked then how I get receipt just for approve I paid for the coming month fee? He said only credit card then I surrender again , I gave him my credit card let him proceed the process. And he start to be impatient and the girl obviously don't know anything and start to tell me that credit card doesn't go through . While right there I got txt from my credit card said it's charged $149 for the membership. And it confront them right there everything they are saying is not right. The most insane part is then he start to get mad at me about their own mistakes and said something really upset to me like: this is the first day she work ( then front desk) , you are making it difficult to her, she is young " but like what this has to do with what we were trying to fix now? but also it doesn't make any sense when I never even scream or act rude to her , so I asked him What I do make it difficult to her? He couldn't answer . So it is rude to question why my name was wrong in the system? Why she said my credit card didn't go through while it went through with my credit card txt me that I got charged? It is rude to ask if I paid Can I please get a receipt? And why She said I am in the system while I am not? And it is rude to ask what we need to do make it work? Like what?! It doesn't even make sense. Crazy ending part Is that he start to lose his temper told me there are let's of boxing class here, you don't need pick us?????????? I still try to be nice then I told him then can you give me the refund for what her just charged for the next month ?($149 membership she claims she didn't charge it while it's shows in my bank transaction ) and he became crazier and just told me we will refund you bye and slammed the door. This is manner is super unprofessional And aggressive . Who does he think he is? A god? Super confused. They have been in business for long time and I was at least in couple of classes before pandemic on class pass.I never left a single review in yelp until he even told me go write bad review about us yelp. I've been coming to this wonderful studio for over 10+ years. I've been to different studios all over LA & the Valley. Classic Kickboxing remains THE BEST. I have never in my years seen a new member or guest be met with any form of disrespect. This studio has and continues to be a safe space to learn, grow, and train. This is such a fun concept! 30 min cycling and 20 min boxing! It makes it a total body workout! In addition to working both your upper and lower body, it's also a good cardio workout. The facility is clean and has a nice vintage feel. There was bathroom with a shower if you want to rinse off afterwards. I love the music and the instructors for these classes! They really make it fun and upbeat, pushing you to try your hardest! Can't wait to come back again! While 20 minutes of boxing doesn't sound like a lot, I got sore from it! At the end of the day, it's what you make out of it! There is a free 90 min parking north of the studio on Raymond. There's also some street parking free after 6pm, but just make sure you read the signs. read more

I occasionally try a new kickboxing gym, and I don't even know why I bother. I just keep coming back to Classic Kickboxing. Mauricio and his staff are so nice. The classes, which are cheaper than a lot of spots, are challenging and sweaty, but also fun. The space is roomy, and not cramped and gimmicky like other newer boxing chains. This is my go to gym for exhaustive workouts that will shed pounds away, especially the Kickboxing Boot Camp run by Maurico and the Kickboxing Circuit run by Phoebe. The gym itself is super clean and fully equipped with punching bags, all matters of weights and exercise equipment, and a boxing ring. All staff promote cleanliness and follow the latest Covid protocols. There are a variety of workouts to choose from with time periods that will fit anyone's busy schedule. First time here and throughly enjoyed the workout! I walked out sweaty, a little beat up, and completely blissful. The kickboxing boot camp workout is an intense, heart pumping, calorie burning, technique building hour of fitness joy. Some folks really knew what they were doing, some were new, and most were somewhere in between, like me. The class starts with a warmup (jumping jacks, mountain climbers, etc) followed by some dynamic stretches, and then moves into combos. Each combo includes high/low punches and various kicks. You do both sides and move to a different one. When you feel like you want to barf, he throws in an active recovery (jumping jacks). Mauricio is a super nice guy and walks around the class, checking form and giving tips. The class ends with about 10 minutes of core work on a mat. They require a large towel to line the mat. The gym itself has an awesome old-school New York vibe. There's nothing at all intimidating about it and I love that it doesn't feel boutique-y. It also doesn't feel gritty, which is a fine line to straddle as a boxing gym. Everything is clean and even though the building is old, everything looks to be well-maintained. TIPS: -Park at the schoolhouse parking lot on 33 E. Green St. for free 90 min parking. There's meters too but they're hard to come by for evening classes -first-timers get free glove and wrap rentals, but after that, it's $3 for gloves and $2 for wraps -come early and the staff will help you wrap your hands... but eventually you'll be able to do it yourself. there's also youtube -if it's your first time, the instructor's bag is the middle one at the front (no surprise there) so I would recommend getting up close. Mauricio, the instructor, did say the people on the inner bags were more intense but I wouldn't be phased if you want to be able to see him better. -BRING A FULL SIZE TOWEL -make sure to wipe down your bag and mat at the end! Wipes are provided. -get ready for a good ole sweaty time! This is a great full-body workout. I feel like it really works on toning but also core strength, and flexibility. I always feel great after! It's also a healthy place to relieve some aggression or just blow off some steam... you know, those highs you get from punching and kicking the **** out of a punching bag. I like that the routines feature basic kickboxing moves AND combos to put it all together. It's challenging but since everyone has their own bag, you can go at your own pace. Mauricio seems to change the combos every time but they all consist of the same basic moves. Unfortunately, my classpass limits me to the number of times I can attend classes here a month, but I'm actually considering buying a package here since I like the workout so much. read more

I love it! Mauricio is a great teacher and the class is fun. Honestly it is the first time in my life that I've actually lasted this long (6 mos) in a regular workout routine. I love this workout! I always leave feeling so strong and on a cardio high. The kickboxing classes are 60 minutes of no-contact boxing. They typically include stretching, warm up, boxing, and conditioning. The boxing potion will consist of punch/kick combinations that the instructor will demonstrate and you will then repeat for around a minute. You're encouraged to go at your own pace and strength, so you decide how intense the workout is. The studio is sparkling clean. The music is always good. The instructors are positive and motivating. I've been here a couple of times doing kickboxing and classic bicicletta. It's a cool spot with fun workouts that aren't boring, lots of variety and the trainers are great. The vibe is cool too, cause the gym inside an old school brick building, it just adds to atmosphere. I took a class with Eddie Andre and he's an awesome trainer..... sometimes i'll forget the combo that were supposed to be working on and he'll spot it and comeby and let me what i'm doing wrong, I liked the personal attention. I've been to many other gyms where they never check on you and just let you wild out, which kinda defeats the purpose of taking one of these classes. This place is ace. read more

I can sense an obsession coming on. Today was my first time at Classic Kickboxing, and what the hell. Why has it taken me my literal lifetime to discover this gem...I honestly had no idea what to expect when I signed up for the Kickboxing Bootcamp class with Mauricio, and in retrospect, I wouldn't have had it any other way. Upon ascending the staircase, I entered a room that I swear could have been from the 1920's. According to Mauricio, the studio is about a hundred years old, so yes, I did mean that in a literal sense. The hardwood floors, the exposed brick wall--the only thing missing really was Rocky, but that was a-ok seeing as we had Mauricio! After checking in (your first class is $15 by the way and gloves and wraps are provided), Mauricio helped me out with the wraps and directed me to my punching bag. As for the workout, and as for any workout really, you get as much out of it as you put in. For some reason, I've always felt this way about kickboxing especially. It could be an absolute breeze or absolutely brutal, but that's totally dependent on you. Personally, I found the bootcamp to be the perfect blend of intensity and fun, and was actually surprised at how quickly the moves got my heart rate going. I may or may not have been standing in a pool of my own sweat by the end of the hour... But to get the most out of your time here, I suggest giving it your all. Punch and kick the bag with all of your might and release that inner badass. Squat like you mean it and do your jumping jacks as if the floor was made of lava. Your biceps will bulge, your back will ache, and the sweat may make your mascara run, but who cares. You're a badass. If it's your first time, come 15-20 minutes early, and bring water and a towel! Oh, and don't forget your quarters for the meter. And word to the wise, King Taco is across the street! Win. read more

Great way to get out pent up frustration and get fit in one short hour. It's like getting a gym membership and psychologist for one price. Mauricio and the crew will give you a whole body workout that will kick your ass (no joke, when I first started I couldn't walk properly for 3 days). I've been coming for a month now, and I don't get sore anymore. I still walk out a sweaty mess; my heart rate monitor tells me I'm burning at least 600 calories each session (not bad for a petite person). This is so addictive that I'm actually a little grumpy on my rest days. Everyone from instructors, to front desk, to other members are friendly and helpful. The studio is super clean, and all the members do their part to keep it that way. I love the flexible pricing options, free parking a block away, and the King Taco across the street (which you should no doubt avoid if you are trying to lose weight). Oh, and the class is FUN. I always feel like a little bit more of a badass after each session. Finally, working out is not a bothersome chore. I'm starting to drop some pounds now, pretty soon I can hit up King Taco again :-) read more

I've been a member at Classic Kickboxing for about a year and a half now, and it's truly the highlight of my day whenever I'm able to come to a class. I started as a complete beginner, knowing absolutely nothing about kickboxing, but had always been curious about the sport. The same day that I took my first class, I immediately signed up for a yearly membership, because of how supportive, kind, and professional the instructor was. I mostly take classes with Mauricio, but absolutely love when I get to take classes with Christian and Phoebe. Since I started taking all of their classes, I really feel like a different, better, and stronger person. I am always learning something new in class, and improving my techniques, and also always feel like I got the best workout, even after a long day at work. I rave about it to everyone I work with and to all my friends as well, but realized I never actually wrote a Yelp review, and really wanted to make sure I shared how much I love this place. I always feel respected and encouraged in class, and also have been encouraged to push myself physically in a way that I'm really proud of and never thought I could do. This work-out is THE BEST. I love how I feel after I've finished a class! The instructors really push you hard (in a good way!). Mauricio is super friendly and is always in a good mood. The studio is clean and there are always plenty of bags. Plus, I'm always sore the next day after my work-out...and I work out a lot! Love this place! A+ read more

I'm updating my review because I have now been coming to Classic Kickboxing (approx. 4-5 days a week) over the past 2.5 months. I bought a pre-paid unlimited membership after having gone to this gym several times via Class Pass. I am down 12 pounds (I know this is what a lot of people are looking for when reading reviews on gyms/studios etc). I am a former volleyball player and have always enjoyed working out. I have been a member at Equinox, CrossFit, various pilates studios, done everything Class Pass has to offer, gone running every day for an hour, and gone to Soul Cycle (don't bother unless you like feeling anxious in a dark room with no ventilation?)....and I can without a doubt say that this is the BEST workout you will ever experience. It's not just extremely challenging physically (be prepared to leave drenched in sweat!), but also mentally. I go to Mauricio's classes 3-4 times a week and Phoebe's 1-2 times a week. Mauricio is a former professional boxer, and a boxing champion. He is extremely skilled, passionate, and patient enough to teach large groups of people with different skill sets. I read another review that stated that you end up "plateauing" because all of the classes are the same. This is simply not true. Mauricio does teach the same techniques with variations of combinations from class to class, but it's up to YOU how hard you want to work out. Mauricio can't control how hard people punch and kick, he can only teach you how to do it, and teach you very well. I find myself getting stronger, leaner, faster and mastering my skill more and more every single day. I have continued to lose weight and see more muscle definition throughout my body than I have since I was in my prime at the age of 17!!! Phoebe deserves a shout out too. She is extremely skilled, sweet, and hosts an incredible class. Her classes involve some circuit training, and she'll often add ankle weights and small 3 lb. weights at the end of the class to take it up a notch - so fun! Mauricio is an amazing person who enjoys speaking to each and every student, and really takes the time to get to know them. He is a very passionate person and I admire the fact that he is the first one to arrive and the last one to leave every day - his passion for this sport shows, as he has maintained a very successful, fun, challenging business over the last 12 years! read more

Trainer is awesome! Owner not so much. Polices the gym in an intense micromanaging way. Would like to attend another class but may think twice if I have to deal with him again. read more
