I would rate this review 500 stars if I could. Our kids started here in May 2024. From the beginning, it was apparent how much the community here is really a family, and they welcome you in without holding anything back. The coaches for the kids classes are experienced, kind, encouraging, and fun. Both of my kids were already fairly confident and in their bodies when they started, but even still, the positive impact of their practice here is palpable. The coaches emphasize being good teammates while honing your own skills. They know they are growing people, not just practice. My daughter benefits for too many unfortunately obvious reasons, and my son has a safe and fun way to channel his natural desire to battle and test himself physically, emotionally, and mentally in a safe and fun way. After the fire, the studio rallied in huge ways to help those of us who lost our homes, leveraging their extended family relationships with other studios throughout the state and beyond. They were the first business to reopen in the burn scar because they knew how much we all needed to grasp onto a semblance of normalcy in a very abnormal and traumatic time. I will never forget the first time I drove into the area at night to pick up my kids. Driving past the ghostly remains and rubble that was once our town, in abject darkness, no streetlights, was such a shock that I could not help but bawl as I drove through... then in the distance, the lights of 10th Planet Pasadena lit up the way like a beacon of light. As I drove into the lot, I could see the kids being kids like they were before. It made me remember that with community, nothing is lost forever. I've known Erik and Lila for a very long time, and I was so excited to hear that they were opening up their own gym in Pasadena. It's one thing to open a jiu jitsu business, but it's a completely different thing when you dedicate your life to your art. These two masters of sport have demonstrated time and time again why their reputation is respected in and out of the community. Dropped in on 10p pasadena as I was visiting out of town from where my home gym is, 10p oakland up in norcal. Got some exhausting and fun rounds in with everyone, loved my time here and would definitely recommend for anyone in the area who wants to get no gi mat time in. Coach Eric showed some options from overhook and underhook dogfight that I still use and find myself in; really great explanation and breaking down the details that make huge differences in being able to hit the move. read more

I've been training under Erik Cruz and Eric Ramey for over a year but my Jiu jitsu journey goes much further back. 10th Planet Pasadena is the first place for me that feels like home. From the familiar faces to the many rolls, I find on and off the mats a strong community. A great location with plenty of parking. Class schedules that work with mine and I'm able to stay sharp on all the many facets of the instructions to continue polishing my game. A great place with a strong community that welcomes you. If your child always listens closely and carefully and naturally excels athletically the first time they execute a move, then you will appreciate this gym for your child. If you plan to take your kid to train 5 times per week and plan to have your young natural athlete compete right away only then you will appreciate care and concern from the coaches. However, if your child reflects more than one of the following: occassionally makes mistakes, occasionally has a hard time focusing, cannot make it to train for each of the kid's days (Mon-Thurs evening and Saturday am), and is not ready to compete in a short amount of time after starting, then please consider a kinder gym. Instruction for kids at 10th Planet Pasadena is not differentiated, empathetic, or forgiving. Other than that...and preferential treatment to kids whose parents also train here...this place is great! read more

Good to see so many women learning self defense, especially as women (and older people) are too often targeted as victims by violent criminals. Their kids' class beforehand was well run & the kids very obviously were having a lot of fun. Wasn't sure if I should be re-starting jiu-jitsu at 55 but training in self defense is so very important, especially as I have kids. This is what my subjective opinion of what 10th Planet Pasadena's business model is: FOCUS on Jiu Jitsu ... everything else will take care of itself. I'd like to believe I did diligent research before I ended up with 10P. There's something about the BJJ community (in 10p Pasadena at least) that promotes genuine respect regardless of what belt you hold. There still is a hierarchy somewhat, but not in an ostentatious manner. BJJ can easily be overwhelming. Firsthand experience... "fundamentals" can be 5-10 moves in one drill... not to mention 10 other details in regard to body position. Instructors have an innate understanding of that, most of the students do too. A lot of other students help each other. Coach Lila shines with her motivation and positive energy. No, not the rah rah kind. She's one who won't sugarcoat but rather, teach tangible approaches and moves and attention to detail that helps you grow in your journey. My curiosity however led me to try out 10p HQ DTLA because it's closer to home, experience the mecca of 10p and the "upside" of having back to back fundamental classes. Exaggerated on the upside part because I'm not sure how it's gonna work out for me physically... but I still have to find out. 10p Pasadena is a business that doesn't thrive on financial growth upfront. A business still needs to make money but they do it in a fashion where the offer is simple... Try out a free session, think about it and call us if you decide to. No pressure to sign up.. They're more concerned to make sure I get my heels dug in correctly for an Ashi Garami more than signing up for one on one sessions lol. 10p thrives on establishing family with students and coaches alike. Coach Eric Ramey is all business in the mixed level class. It's very technical but informative provided that you're at that level that you understand theoretical approaches to JJ. Almost everyone knows everybody, clowning around, relaxing calmly before it begins. I've never had a chance to take Coach Compella's class but I've seen him do mixed levels as well. I've seen/heard most of their podcasts and I highly respect these individuals. Coach Lila is my favorite since she has the most unassuming, PATIENT, instructive skill set that are unmatched, especially for beginners like myself. Coach Rich and coach George also teach fundamental classes and they too have the potential to be great instructors/professors. I find it easier to learn from Coach Rich because he takes the time to listen and his subtext is genuinely calm and open to questions. I appreciate that the most when I just cannot get it the 1st time. Age catches up to your mental capacity to learn, high blood pressure, personal life situations and all sorts of other reasons/excuses. Lol They say boxing is a science. It truly is. But BJJ feels like MIT. Information is 10x faster all coming at you. You take it as it is... Run the marathon, this isn't a sprint kinda deal. But no wonder 10thplanet named itself that. Prior to training with Eric Ramey, I had zero confidence in my no gi game. I honestly dreaded attending no gi classes at my hometown gym and felt incredibly out of place during sparring. I wasn't sure if it'd ever click for me; however, after training with Eric for two weeks over the holiday, I finally made a breakthrough. Eric has an incredible ability to teach and simply convey integral principles to jiu jitsu. As nice as it is to learn a ton of moves, it's hard to connect the dots without solid concepts. After two weeks of learning core fundamentals and basic techniques, my confidence immediately shot up and my game immediately improved in both gi and no gi. Having to leave 10th Planet Pasadena became extra tough since I hate having to walk away from such great tutelage and a positive training environment. Follow-up review after almost 9 months in for 6 yr-old daughter. Unbelievable how far she's come in developing mastery of technique, confidence and aggressiveness. She started off being quite timid during drills with boys in the class and now she's so much more physical and stronger that she drills with anyone. Much gratitude for Lila, George (and now John--new wrestling instructor) for bringing her along and challenging her at the right pace and having the more advanced kids pay attention to her level. Good mix of girls and boys in class and they're all super cool kids who work hard and show each other respect. Again thank you coaches and parents. Very open and supportive atmosphere. If you're looking for top notch instruction, this is the place to be. Not only will you receive high level techniques, but the trainers will push you to the next level. There was a time where I felt like throwing up and calling it a day, but they said one more. Despite my "gut" feeling, I jumped in for a final roll. Not only are they great on the mats but what sets this school apart is that they are also great teachers. I've been training for over 10 years in the gi. I first heard about 10th Planet from a good friend that used to go to headquarters but decided to come here because it was much closer to home and opening. This location is also closer to me so I decided to take a look and signed up on Day 1. Erik Cruz and Eric Ramey are two of the very best technical black belts out there. I found out that Cruz does color commentary for EBI events and Ramey has seminars throughout the world that he's in demand. They are very creative, have a very strong detail to attention and like to think outside the box while maintaining efficiency. The kids coaches Lila, who is an active competitor and George, who is also one of the wrestling coaches are also great that kids perform very well at local competitions. The other coaches Alex, Howard, Patrick, Zack, Jonathan (who runs the strength and conditioning classes) and Dawna also teach classes and are very genuine and approachable in personal growth for jiu jitsu students. None of the staff pushes you to compete but they will want you to work hard along with every student and results will show. It may seem overwhelming at first but when you put your trust in them, you will not regret it. It is amazing to have this type of quality in one house. I highly recommend this location and strongly feel that you would be doing yourself a disservice if you were in the area and not make an attempt to visit here. read more

This has become one of my favorite places to go to every week. I am new to this with 0 experience - both Ramey and Cruz are super nice, patient, amazing instructors, so down to earth. I was very intimidated and uncomfortable in the beginning but Ramey and Cruz have made me feel very comfortable. I bring my son here as well to the kids class on Saturday-I instructors George and Leila are also super nice and the best kids instructors I have ever seen.
