This is the hidden gem/gym of Pasadena! This is a legit kickboxing/MMA gym for men, women and children without the ego and attitude. I was slightly intimidated walking into a "Fight Academy" as a woman, but was instantly put at ease. The atmosphere is welcoming and encouraging. It's inspiring to train with actual fighters! The trainers/coaches here are extremely passionate about their craft and offer a variety of great classes! Their classes meet all fitness levels from Fitness kickboxing to MMA. I have been with Fight Academy Pasadena for at least 5+ years. Every single day I walk through the doors of this gym I feel at peace. I call this place my second home. I tend to stay quiet but I've never felt so welcomed. Yes, it a small family gym you will never feel like an outcast nor unwelcomed. I've taken pretty much every class and know each instructor/ coach personally. Each and every one of them have always had my best interest or have always wanted to make me a better form of what I am and I humbly thank them for that. My friends, family, co workers and my girlfriend all have trained here, all have been welcomed with hospitality and open arms. Members here have no egos, but instead welcome newcomers with open arms. It's truly sad that in 2018, women are still being discriminated against. As a former member of Fight Academy, I experienced many microaggressions while training there- such as male students saying things like: "At least now she'll never get raped," "She's vicious," & "You're not strong, but you're fast," to name a few. Recently, I wrote a proposal detailing these aggressions and offered suggestions on practical changes that could be made that would make the gym environment more socially inclusive and welcoming for everyone. I gave it to the head coach with the intent of all the coaches at Fight Academy reading it to help build a social consciousness about these matters. I wrote this proposal out of my love for Fight Academy and all I know that it could be. However, the head coach reacted by kicking me out. The fact that I was kicked out for providing constructive feedback and voicing my opinion, speaks volumes about how much Fight Academy really values their female members.The head coach has not created a space at the table for women and by refusing to address these serious issues (comments that reinforce rape culture, music played that is degrading towards women, and the other issues listed in my proposal attached below), he allows this type of sexist culture to be perpetuated. When you are complicitly silent on these matters and do not use your voice or privilege to speak out, you perpetuate injustice. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. The coaches at FA are very knowledgeable and professional. They take pride in their work and are true masters of their craft. I've never been a gym member until I joined Fight Academy. It has a family like environment, great vibe, positivity and a very diverse group of people. People here are pretty cool and approachable. Also, I love that coach Savant (and all the coaches) encourage women to truly learn and understand martial arts. No false sense of security here!! He will put you to work, call out your mistakes, correct your technique, give you the rationale, then tap your face again until you learn to block(and keep your hands up). With that said, I have to say that Savant and team have been extremely patient with me. As genuine and kind as the coaches are, there is no BS here though! You're expected to put in the work if you want to learn the craft and see physical and mental results. I can say that I've learned so much about myself, and this gym has helped me deal with grad school stress!! As for the gym itself, it is located on Mills Alley next to Cafe 86. The gym has a boxing/kickboxing area with heavy bags and ring(pads for pad work etc), a decent sized mat in the BJJ section, and an area with weights and treadmill for strength and conditioning. The gym is clean and well kept. There are also various classes offered throughout the day and week. They offer boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiujitsu, and MMA classes. My six year old son has been dying to start martial arts so my wife and I decided to sign him up for a free 3 session pass to make sure we were a good fit. Funny thing is that we already felt at home before the first class started. They are a very family oriented friendly bunch but don't get it twisted; they taught high level martial arts though fun movements, technique and discipline. I myself don't train here, but have gone more than once to do some sparring when I was invited. I do know a few people that train there (having once lived in Pasadena for ten years lol) and have gotten to know a few of the staff and an owner. Yes it is an mma gym, which means it's not the same as a traditional martial arts school...BUT the instructors are all old enough to have come from traditional backgrounds and not only respect those styles, they have improved on them. There isn't a better school to teach the various aspects of mixed martial arts, including the mentality it takes to compete and even train, anywhere near Pasadena then Fight Academy. Hands down (or up in this sport), best Mma facility in the SGV. Savant, the owner, truly cares about the progression of every person who shows up to classes. Over my 14+ years of martial arts training, I've never found a more complete Mma school. The building is clean with plenty of mat space, the weight area is neat and functional, plus there are 3 restrooms! The coaching staff are all top-notch: you have professional fighters that, if met elsewhere, you'd think were just friendly sweethearts, but on the mats they have skillsets that are tried and true. Plus, the community who frequent fight academy are of all age groups: kids classes are rapidly growing, often with multiple instructors per class. Adults have a variety of class types to choose from: kickboxing, cardio kickboxing, gi and nogi jiujitsu, strength and conditioning, and wrestling. I don't see myself ever quitting training here since everyday I'm seeing guys on the mats twice my age an still rolling(even competing)!! My favorite part is watching the fight team prepare for fights and eventually going to actually watch them compete LIVE, wearing my favorite "Fight academy" short of course. read more

I LOVE FIGHT ACADEMY!! My boyfriend and I were trying out CrossFit Pasadena when I discovered Fight Academy practically next door to them. My bf ended up doing CrossFit (he loves it) but it wasn't for me so I migrated next door. I'd been looking for a nice gym/mma/muay thai place for the longest time and I'm so glad that I found them. I started out by doing the week trial and all of the instructors were super nice, even personally coming to me to show me how to do something. I tried the Saturday jiu jitsu class, MMA with Savant, and women's kickboxing before committing myself to a one year contract. When I started, I went in twice a week for the women's kickboxing class with Dustin, and I loved it so much I'm going in 4 times a week now (also classes with Jay). The instructors WORK you and I'm soaked with sweat every time I leave, but a great workout feels awesome (and sore) afterwards. They mix it up and workouts are different from class to class -- sometimes its about technique, sometimes, as many reps as you can, other times, cardio, sparing, bags, partner drills, etc. Keeps me on my toes. The people at fight academy are also really cool (and welcoming ). I've met some pretty friendly and awesome people who motivate me to push myself harder. I'm fortunate that I live in pasadena and it's a relatively short drive for me, but I know people who live in El Monte, Monterey Park and Downtown and drive out just for FA after a long day at work. I was signed up at Gold's Gym about a year ago and sort of slacked off after the first couple months, but the people you meet at FA and the relationships you build keep you coming. There are quite a number of ladies who come in for not only the women's class but also the MMA and Muay Thai classes so if you're female and worried about getting a creepy vibe like at some gyms there's no need to worry. This place is also very kid friendly and judging from the kid's classes before the women's class, they get worked out too! It's actually really inspiring seeing the kids practice take downs and spar with each other. The facilities are amazing (ample space, clean, nice spray painted and bright colored walls, equipment in great shape). The attitude is humble yet strong and confident. The events (ie. Proving Grounds) are a must attend. I've gotten in MUCH better shape -- I feel stronger, have more stamina (hiked the grand canyon for 2 days and I wasn't sore!!), and overall a lot healthier. I have fight academy to thank for all that. I'm proud to wear the FA logo on my shirt/shorts. I've been going to the gym for almost a year now and I couldn't be happier. I started with private lessons with Gio and got hooked immediately! I highly recommend him for any privates. The gym is beautiful, well maintained, and friendly yet tough atmosphere. Head coach Savant and the team are all amazing at what they do! Our 11 year old son has been in the Kidzilliins program for a year and he is totally into it! His primary sport is ice hockey and we encouraged him a year ago to take up BJJ to round out his training. We chose Fight Academy because it's in a great location in the center Old Pas but more importantly, our son loves the coaching he gets from Savant and his experienced pros, Heinrich and Gio. They are incredible with the kids, and in the course of the class, the kids are also learning how to be disciplined and focused while having a blast! The beauty of the membership is our son can drop in on any of the days he's not skating. The strength he's built over the past year has not only improved his sport, he's feeling much more confident in general, not just from his new BJJ skills but also his striking skills from the boxing and Muay Thai training. This is a REAL mixed martial arts gym in an underground basement in the heart of downtown Pasadena. And even though parking isn't on site, you're not even gonna care b/c the quality of the classes & the instructors is TOP. Heinrich teaches the evening classes & gets your brain working just as much as your cardio. Perfect if you want to build a new skill & get a great workout. Fight Academy has been my MMA home gym since December. Savant gave me a fair deal after explaining to him a situation I was in, and he was more than fair with me when we talked business. He's a very respectful owner who cares for his people. As a coach, Savant is tough and makes you work. He runs a good workout in his classes that helped me become stronger and faster. Coaches Jimmy and Gabe, who run the Jiu Jitsu classes, are great instructors with tons of knowledge and have good minds for teaching, and Heinrich and Martin do a good job with the MMA and striking. If you have kids, I recommend this gym for them. Other gyms with kids programs just take money from parents and just have kids running around, causing chaos, but the kids at FIght Academy are well behaved and talented thanks for the good coaching. Fight Academy also houses a Crossfit program if you're into that, strength & conditioning classes, fitness kickboxing, and MMA classes with well known MMA referee Herb Dean. What can I say after a few times coming here we felt like family. I see all the guys every time and they know your name they say hello. There's no pressure to sign up or lock you in for the hard sell but the facility sells itself with value and experience from top fighters with a ton of expertise. My daughter is now been doing Muy Thai kickboxing for a couple of months and she really enjoys it. It's a high-level fight training facility and they have real fighters who actually compete in various promotions. There's a lot of camaraderie in this training group for example they close the gym last week so everybody could go attend one of the coaches fights. Ricky scraps, Nick the ear, and Savant Young are but a few of the great trainers at this place. Coach Savant Took some of the kids out for ice cream after they trained really hard and spar one day. They offer a boxing, kickboxing, grappling with gi, grappling with no gi, and various fitness classes. We find a parking at the 90 minute for free parking structure a half a block away is more than enough time for just doing one class. Great facilities, instructors, members and just the entire atmosphere. Their classes range from advanced (sparing, professional level training) to intermediate level to beginning level (fundimentals) to classes for kids. The trainers are fantastic, some are professional MMA fighters like Savant who teaches the advanced practical techniques that will work in the ring or on the streets but he also loves working with kids, so everybody has a lot of fun and get what they are looking for. JJ teachers are also excellent, really neat JJ skills to learn, also class for beginners to advanced grappling with sparring; classes for kids seems to be lots of fun and enjoyable for the little ones. If you are there to get fit and loose weight than you will get there fast if you committed to sticking to their plan, it is hard work but fun and you can get there quickly if you are COMMITTED. Feedback - Herb Deans Referee School This course has good input from Herb, his involvement gives those running the course creditability... but it ends there. The course itself lacks certification style structure and creditability... as required It lacked due process and structure as per training and assessing standards... final course interviews were held in a hotel foyer, with no feedback provided nor offered on failures. Assessment was conducted by numerous people from the fight centre, this lacked unbiased and consistent process as required, although experienced jujitsu people i would suggest they were not qualified trainers/assessors. It was rushed and untimely, most certainly lacked constancy across the assessors. It had high regard for jujitsu with very little for stand up, fitness and or actually ability... the few locals that pasted had poor fitness and or actual ring time as a fighter or trainer. No feedback provided - apart from pay again and come back... post course there was a lot of very disappointed people in the process and course itself, a real shame as we expected more training and fair assessment. Most, near enough all overseas candidates failed, and were offered nothing more than a re-enrolement in the next course for full fees. (not cheap, which is fair enough if you get great service, we didn't) Not recommended for overseas (non-local) people as it seems like a money earner rather than its true perceived purpose. Unless the course has revisited its approach since... As a diploma qualified trainer assessor i offered constructive feedback and professional course expectations to the course administrator, she declined and ignored all and sundry. Understandingly not everyone can pass if they lack the suitability - but it taught nil and had a poor and unfair assessment process. (in australian this is not legal) Recommend people go else where and don't get star struck by Herbs name (by the way he is a nice fella) his course and administrator has let down his good reputation - shame that regards read more

My story is that after losing some people who i loved going thru a divorce i was depressed started lifting weights got up close to 300lbs big but not healthy. i started running and doing cardio i wasnt happy. A Friend of mine told me to check out his gym so i did. I fell in love the only thing that makes me happy is fighting. I started FIGHT ACADEMY 2 months ago i was weinging in at 255 now im 230 getting ready to do what i love which is fight. To be honest with everyone FA i saving my life. I think the lack of reviews for this school/gym is because we are to tired after the workouts to type :) Anyone who checks it out doesn't leave they stay and train. I am coming up and a year from when my gym closed and felt like the workout part of my life was never going to be the same....well that was an understatement. I joined Fight Academy almost a year ago and I cannot thank my gym enough for closing. I am not a person who likes the same boring workout every week. I love that never know 100% what we will be doing in class but I do know I am going to get a work out, learn something new and always feel challenged. Never have I seen such a level of professional approach to training the average individual just wanting to get a good workout learn a skill and have fun. When you are new everyone helps you learn technique and is so patient. Whatever class, whatever your level (I was a beginner) whoever the instructor they all take time to help you so you learn correctly. It's not a franchise, it's a family. One of the coolest part of this place is watching the kids. Kids come in a bit shy and in a couple of weeks you see such a change, they are standing tall and feeling confident.
