My first time dining here and I wasn't that impressed with the service or the food. I walked in and no one was standing at the front door to greet me, and I had to walk up to someone to ask how do I go about ordering food. I wasn't impressed with the customer service especially it being my first time. The. Forgot to write a review here but the misses and I went to this lovely restaurant, you go in and order right at the counter and go find a place to sit, loved the decorations of yokai masks and other Japanese themed decor, the servers were great helping out with anything I asked after they brought the food, we both got tonkotsu and we got chicken karage and some white rice, karage was perfect the rice was good trust me I've had bad rice and the ramen was amazing I just recommend for the tonkotsu adding some black garlic oil, overall amazing experience read more

Me and my boyfriends favorite ramen spot! Mostly everything is fresh, made from scratch and amazing quality. Prices are fair, great portions and drinks are strong and flavorful. It's self service and wait times are not long. I love the Shoyu chicken ramen and the ambience is cozy. There's only like 5 parking spaces so I recommend going early if you don't want to walk far. read more

Food was so delish! Had the tonkosu with pork belly and shishto margarita! The staff asked if we were first timers and we said yes. They came during our meal and brought us some complimentary sweet cucumbers (cant remember the name, sorry) and it was was so delish. The ambiance was quiant and nice. I recently visited Kimura Ramen bar in the later hours of the evening. They are currently staying open till 1:00 am. to cater to the late night crowd. I got to try their delicious Gyoza & Tonkotsu Ramen. I appreciate the fact that regardless of the hour, everything was served piping hot & fresh. I must warn you though, parking is very limited and you'll definitely have to find some free parking downtown or park in a convenient pay lot. Another thing is Kimura is very small. With social distancing measures in place, the entire place would looked pretty packed with even just ten customers inside. There are some very good things going on at Kimura, you'll just have to be patient & understanding with their limitations on parking & dine-in. read more

Downtown SA is a COVID induced ghost town. Easy ordering and awesome delivery by John W thru Postmates. He showed up on a tricked out low-rider bicycle and was super nice! That's where the love affair ends. Badly. I love ramen. I try new ramen joints in EVERY city I visit. Hell, I plan trips around ramen. I. Love. Ramen. This is not good ramen. Looks good, smells good. Tastes really, really NOT good. Super salty. Like drowning in the Gulf of Mexico (dirty Galveston not clear blue Destin). Chashu: tough and over done. And salty. Mushrooms: really salty (brined?). Broth: salty. Noodles: chewy. Probably salty (hard to differentiate). Couldn't finish it. Strapped on my mask and walked to McD's for some f'n nuggets. Bummer. Seriously. read more

I loved in SF for 8 yrs, moved here and one of my favorite things to get in sf was ramen and boba(no boba here but they have an awesome bar!). First time coming here, because my nephew wanted to try Ramen, I chose this restaurant please bc of how authentic it looks (& tastes so delicious). It was amazing! The staff were so friendly, the owner gave my nephew and I samples to try before picking which broth he wanted. We're going to keep coming here! This place is beautiful! I didn't know it was a local business too, which made the experience even better. Upon entering, you are able to see a bar area, open kitchen, and where you order. The atmosphere was probably my favorite about this restaurant. You order your food first then you sit anywhere you'd like. Definitely recommend the TanTanMen Ramen (impeccable quality and flavor with a kick!) as well as the Hot Sake!! The food was decent, not the best Ramen I've ever had but the location is great and the size of the place is quiet and cozy. The reason for the high rating is that the service was superb! My family had never had Ramen before and they had so many questions and the staff was so happy to help. The one major drawback is that the ventilation in the open kitchen is poor so we left the restaurant smelling of ramen which I wouldn't complain about normally but the smoke bothered my eyes so bad I had to buy eye drops. read more

So it has been sometime since visiting Kimura. The last time I sat in their establishment as a patron was when they were downtown. I enjoyed the location and energy there, but I had begun to lose a little faith in my old faithful Ramen nook. The quality had started to take a turn for the worse. I was sad to see it go. Then they have resurfaced and resurrected i on the edge of downtown on Flores street. What can I say, they were back. I enjoyed my tonkotsu ramen the sweetest shiitake mushrooms and super tender pork belly. So glad to have you back! This place came highly recommended and the food was yummy! The dumplings had this crunch on top of it that was incredible, and the chicken karage (idk how to spell it) came with 3 sauces each had a very different flavor and that was also yummy. The pork belly in the ramen was really good, but the mushrooms were a little too sweet and you have to ask for the special egg so it's the soy sauce soaked egg. The ambiance was nice, it was quiet. I had 3 ramen: tonkotsu, miso, and tantanmen. And they are all delicious because of tasty toppings, yummy noodles, and flavorful broth. One of our soup was very salty, but the restaurant was very kind and replaced the dish for us. However, the chashu pork is chunky and unauthentic. Chashu pork needs to be flat and round which is something the restaurant can improve on. read more

Wanted something warm and delicious on this cold rainy day and this place hit the spot! It's super swanky and the food is amazing! It was pretty busy at 2 pm on a Saturday and we ended up briefly waiting at their Dash Bar upstairs, which was super cute as well! Our service was friendly and impeccable! Okay so this was a TOUGH one to rate. The staff was super nice and attentive. The spot itself is intimate and cute and I've heard so many great things about the food. With that being said... I have to rate what I was given. For the appetizer we ordered the spicy edamame. Which usually my friends and I eat spicy no problem. But this was extra extra we couldn't eat them without devouring our water. To the point we literally asked if they could be rinsed off. We were told that certain cooks make them with varying spice and she should have warned us. After several attempts they just gave us the regular edamame and that was good. The gyoza was a good choice for the apprenticed I did enjoy. For the ramen the broth was good, however there was no mushrooms to put in them. They didn't offer to substitute or add something more of another ingredient so it just made the ramen pretty bland to me. So that's why I rated down on this spot. I did like that they had gluten free noodles for my friend and she said they were good. My friend and I both got the same ramen except she got gluten free noodles. She didn't get enough noodles and I didn't get enough broth. So there was that. The drinks were okay, they tasted fine but not too much alcohol in them for the price. I really love ramen and I heard mixed reviews about this spot. But so far for San Antonio Ramen either suck it restaurant or Fahrenheit 32 are better options in my opinion. read more

After seeing the great reviews, both on and off Yelp, I was excited to give this place a try. I don't give this review lightly but I was sorely disappointed... The location is downtown, lots of homeless, parking is very limited with a walk regardless of where. The service, though the restaurant was small, was lacking in attentiveness and availability. The food, I had ordered the grilled bok choy, and tonkotsu ramen, with green tea. The bok choy came out cold and oily. The ramen was lacking in flavor, the pork belly had a dryness about it and the ramen wasn't really what I was expecting when it came to texture or chewiness. Texan Japanese food My husband and I popped into this restaurant to share some gyoza and a bowl of tonkotsu ramen for a light dinner. The execution was good - the gyoza and noodles were cooked perfectly and had the right ingredients, but it all tasted quite different to the food that we had eaten in Japan. My husband and I came here for a day-date while the kids were at school. We went all out and ordered the Tantanmen and the Tonkotsu Ramen, the onigiri, wakame salad and the shishito peppers. Worst ramen ever, I ordered the $16 signature ramen, it's tasteless, I guess they forgot to put seasoning on the soup, it has no flavor at all, taste no different then water. Worst ramen!!! Waited 35 minutes to seat, and it took more then half an hour to get our ramen ready, it has total less then 15 customer, slowest service, worst taste ramen, will never come back. Don't waste time on this "ramen" place!!! read more

Enjoy coming here for lunch. But get here early or late as parking sux. Food is always hot and fresh. Prices are affordable. There's more than ramen. I love the teriyaki fried chicken w rice. Ambiance and service were excellent, unfortunately the food was not great. I ordered the Shoyu ramen and my husband had Tonkotsu ramen. My dish was extremely cold with congealed noodles with burnt shiitake mushrooms, while my husband's meal had pork with hair still attached to the skin (typically it would be seared off) and a broth with very little flavor. History

Established in 2013.

The concept of Kimura comes out of the real-world experience of its owners Michael Sohocki (founder/owner of Restaurant Gwendolyn) and Jenn Wade. Each of them has a deep connection to Japanese culture. Chef Michael lived in Japan for many years and Jenn is half Japanese. As Restaurant Gwendolyn was named for Chef's grandmother, we continued the theme of honoring our most important family connections by naming Kimura after Jenn's Japanese grandmother. We do well to honor those who have given so much to who we are. Japanese culture is built around food. Go anywhere in the world and it would be hard to find a people that take more pride in the quality, wholesomeness, flavor and beauty of Japanese food. I dined in and their menu was extremely limited and you have to add everything a la cart unlike other ramen places. On the menu they clearly state do not leave a bad review just leave direct feedback. But honestly, you shouldn't have to bribe or beg your patrons in trying to silence them. Make the needed adjustments to earn loyal customers, like not making them add every single ingredient as a separate charge, playing some music to drown out conversation from the other table, checking on your customers a little more often, and improving the quality of your menu.
