I'm not the biggest fan of any kind of asian food, there are a couple of restaurants in the city I typically go to, so I'm a picky critic when it comes to any kind. I was impressed, I started with Gyoza (dumplings), which is filled with pork. It was a very good start and choice, the sauce it comes with is pretty divine. I strongly recommending getting some if you go to check out the place. I followed with the Tonkotsu Ramen Soup with Pork Belly, which was one of the best ramen soups I've ever had. It had a lot of flavor it was hard and I'm sure I made a mess of myself. My only drawback was when adding the pork belly to the ramen soup, I felt like there was only like 2 very small pieces of it, and seriously, for the price, that's a generous description. For the price, I would have thought they would do a better job of that. The mushrooms were a slight disappointment, as I'm actually a fan of them, so I thought they could have balanced the soup a little better. So, not to detract anything, the soup overall was extremely impressive. The orange soda they make in house might surprise you as well, give it a shot. read more

Extremely disappointing and not too sure what happened honestly. The previous location was great. It was my go to ramen place and I endorsed it to all of my friends but my experience last night was my first at this newer location and boy I was in for it. We were sat almost immediately (thank god considering there were only 4 other parties). After being sat, I placed an order for bok choy and tonkotsu ramen. My 3 friends also ordered entrees and one friend got a beer. After about 30 minutes the beer shows up. 1 hour elapsed and the only thing that shows up is two entrees. Before I go any further, my ramen was still pretty good however, the egg was undercooked (I know it's supposed to be soft boiled but even the whites were too soft). So now we are well past the hour mark and my friend and I have finished our food while the other half of the party is still waiting for food. Finally after about an hour and a half, everyone has received their food except my bok choy. That comes even later off of someone else's dinner table because it was misplaced. The dining experience is over now and everyone was charged for everything they ordered even though one ramen was so undercooked my friend didn't finish it and my bok choy was cold and served as a dessert even though it's meant to be an appetizer. Throughout the whole experience I watched waitresses make simple mistakes like misplacing food or accidentally making repeat tickets. Then behind the counter I watched the chef handle raw food and cooked food with the same hand that wasn't covered by a glove. Ingredients for the food were left, right, and center of me (everywhere but in the kitchen it seemed). Dear Kimura owner/operator, you had a good thing going but now you're in need of an extreme makeover. Please take these criticisms and seek improvement I think you still have the potential for a great business. read more

For a small ramen shop this place does a good job of service and style. Good music for entertainment and an authentic look. Bite size gyoza and a decent selection of ramen bowls and broth. If you don't see what you want ask the staff and they will help you make a selection no hassle. Definitely will revisit read more

Amazing and always delicious. Everything is wonderful including the people. Thank you so much

First time here and last time ever. I asked the server if I could get my food to go after waiting 25 mins. She informed the cook with brown curly hair and he immediately made a comment to her with a face gesture. His body language and gestures said it all. Clearly he was displeased because I asked if the food was ready. I completely understand that food takes time and my intention was never to rush anyone, but I needed to know the timeline in order to get back to work on time. After I noticed his body language. I approached him as my goal was to empathize with the situation, but again I needed to know how much longer so I could get back to work. They didn't give me a time I had to throw times out there. The server checked me out, regardless of the service I tipped, and then after I sat outside. As I waited for my food I realized that food with that kind of attitude is not worth eating. Rather than asking for refund I just left because you learn in life you cannot rationalize with people like that. Please read other reviews about their customer service it is spot on. read more

I've had authentic ramen from the motherland (haha) and although it's not the same, it is still super yummy! The waitress I had was absolutely adorable and somehow (table for 1) I ended up buying a whole damn sake bottle lol. So yes.. At this exact moment I am attempting to finish this thing all by myself lol (and failing miserably). The atmosphere is great and the employees are all cheerful and welcoming (or maybe that's because it's Friday?! ). Lol either way I'm definitley coming back read more

The place is located downtown and you can find parking but may take some searching, however there is paid public parking. I've eaten a lot ramen places and even some in San Antonio and this place doesn't make it anywhere close to middle tier. The ramen was not very good and reminded me of the mrauchan ramen. The booth was too salty. I ordered mine with the pork belly, which was the only tasty part. I ordered with extra noodles, but there is no need for it and was too much. They have good appetizers the grilled edamame and sheshito peppers were good. Appetizers good but ramen could be better. read more

Small place, parking is across the street $5 on the wknd. Neat atmosphere, the kitchen is open so it's pretty neat to see your meal being cooked Starters : pork dumplings(good stuff!) Meal: Oyako Don (safe choice) Rice, chicken, sea weed. Next time I'll try it without the seaweed, not big on the "fishy taste". Drink : hot green tea Good Service, our waitress was helpful. This was my first time going to Kimura and it was absolutely amazing! As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by Samantha who was just a ray of sunshine. The actual restaurant itself was amazing. The layout, the decor, the lighting, and the soft music, everything was absolutely perfect. And the environment was so fun yet calm and low key (if that makes any sense). Ordering with Samantha was amazing. She was so kind and explained the menu very well and didn't make me feel stupid for asking question. And the food itself was to die for. I got miso and i could not get enough of it. It was so warm and comforting, I didn't want to stop eating. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, it would be that miso. Overall everything was amazing. Thank you Samantha and the rest of the staff for the amazing food and experience. I will definitely be coming back the next time I'm in San Antonio. read more

I walked in here during my trip in San Antonio and ramen sounded good. We were greeted and sat right away (but it was Thursday lunch time) idk how busy it is during The Weekends. Our waiter was okay not all that attentive, but we were eventually able to figure out what we wanna and order. The ramen was nothing special, it cured my hunger but that was about it. I've definitely had better and I don't think I'll go back next time I'm in San Antonio. read more

I'll start with the positives. Amazing food. I will be honest and say I have never had a true ramen experience until I dined here, and I loved everything about it and every last slurp of the salty goodness. Pork belly was melt in your mouth. My drink was also excellent. I can't remember what was in it, but at the bottom of the drink was a pool of house-made grenadine so good, I could have bathed in it. Now for the negative. Service was just... wtf? Just completely bizarre. Our server was so rude. He just stood there and waited for us to say what we wanted instead of actually asking us. We asked him questions and his answers were weird and made it seem like he had no idea what he was talking about. I'm a server, so to be honest I don't go out wanting to chit chat with a server all night long. But I expect at least basic courtesy. Didn't get that here. However, when walking out the door several other employees smiled and asked how we enjoyed everything, so our evening ended on a nice note. Do I recommend eating here? Yes. I'll be back again. Just hoping for a better service experience next time. read more

This place is ah-mazing! My first time at a ramen place and I was NOT disappointed! Our gem of a waiter Allan recommended the Tonkotsu (pork bone broth with pork belly). Delicious! Very cool atmosphere, would definitely recommend! :) Sadly I forgot to snap a picture of the food. Oops! read more

This place was recommended by a colleague. It was a great little find for lunch. We called ahead to reserve a table, since we have short lunch, and a large group. When we got there, we still had to wait about 15 minutes to get seated. We reviewed the menu in the meantime. The menu was simple, and my colleague recommended the pork broth with pork belly. I decided to try the TanTan, chicken broth with ground pork, bok and mushrooms. It was a delicous choice. I also ordered edamame charred and spicy. We were warned that they are pretty spicy, and they were a great start to the meal. I had never had real ramen before, so this experience probably ruined me for another other ramen place. But I am willing to experiment and compare other ramen places just for research. My only negatives were things that can't really be fixed- parking was $5 and a block away. It is super intimate (tiny) and we had to wait for a while for a table. Otherwise, the food was awesome, and if someone else is driving... I'm in! read more

If you like Ramen, you've found your place. I have to admit we chose this place only because it was the closest restaurant to our hotel that was open. We were glad it worked out that way. Neither my wife or I were aware that ramen could have such a great taste and flavor. While the music was a little loud and different it wasn't overbearing. The service was great and friendly. Amazing food, atmosphere, and unique experience. Highly recommend trying this place!!

Half price appetizers and some bar drinks before 7pm! I ordered the house white and it was the biggest glass of wine I have ever been served. No lie, I bet it was almost half a bottle. For appetizers we ordered Nasu- grilled eggplant wit garlic and caramelized onions, Cucumber sunomono and Gyozo-pork dumpling with ginger- fantastic! For our entrees we had Shoyu with chicken- chicken broth with nori, boiled egg, fishcake, marinated shiritake, spring onions and bean sprouts. I thought it was great but my partner thought it was just ok. I also ordered the Otaku don-seared chicken breast with ginger, egg, onions served over steamed rice. Funny thing is that my partner loved it and I thought it was just ok. Overall, we really liked Kimura. It's where the locals eat and there were no river walk tourists. read more

I have to say it was quite unsatisfying. I ordered tonkotsu ramen with chashu pork. Simple, no add-ons since it was my first time there. The broth was rich and creamy like how a tonkotsu should be but it was just very very salty. Each component of the dish was overpowering each other that nothing complements. Although I did like that the egg was not flavored so that gave it a little break from the saltiness of the dish. But that's about it. The shiitake mushrooms were very good and packs in a lot of flavor, but it was just not mingling well with the other flavors. The chashu pork seemed over cooked (it didn't seem like it was braised well). The noodles I though were over cooked and almost soggy, there's no bite to it. I ate my ramen quite quickly so it shouldn't even get that soggy that quickly! It was pretty disappointing. The only thing I liked about it was the shiitake mushrooms. /edit: I forgot it had one fish cake. It was forgettable. I mean the dish was just too much that I can't even taste the fish cake. /edit Visually it was appealing but man I had to drink tea after a few bites because it was that salty. I hope they fix the recipe soon. Otherwise I probably won't even recommend this place. On another note: my husband got the shoyu ramen and he said it was very salty too. So it might just be the ratios they're putting on for their flavors. Better change it quick! We left there wanting to drink a whole gallon of water! And eat some sweets to counteract the saltiness. I feel like 3 stars was pretty generous cuz the service was nice and we got seated pretty timely. read more

This place is absolutely delicious! The venue is very small so if you're not into intimate settings, I would order takeout. I wish I would've taken pics of the entire meal but it looked too good for me not to start eating lol. Our waitress was lively and patient with us. I enjoyed the orange soda as well. Definitely read the reviews on this place. While the service is less than appealing, the food is actually pretty good (I was a first timer trying Ramen, however). The servers seem a bit confused on the menu and aren't very attentive, which is surprising considering how small the place is. We were served luke warm miso soup (we got new hot soup 10 mins later) and when we were served the ramen, they spilled a little broth on one of us (on accident) and the waiter didn't know which order was whose. Overall, the food was good. *The mushrooms were my favorite part.* Don't go if you can't stand bad service though. read more

I just returned from a 3-year tour in Japan, am half-Japanese, and grew up in Japan from 5th grade until I was almost 21 (with 1 year in the U.S. during that time), so I have plenty of experience eating ramen. And for a place in the U.S., this wasn't a bad spot to find decent ramen. The restaurant really did its best to give a bit of that authentic Japanese restaurant feel, from having the cooks in full view making your meal, to hearing, "Welcome!" ("いらっしゃいませ！") upon entering the restaurant. Location-wise, it's actually not in a bad spot. It wasn't difficult to find, is right next to the Greyhound bus station, and only a few minutes walk to the main part of downtown. There's limited on-street parking in the area but your best bet is just to use the garage across the street. The ramen itself was better than I expected. The broth had good flavor to it and the roast pork , "chashu" (チャシュー), was surprisingly good. I could tell with some of the details of the dish that the owner/chef had definitely spent some time in Japan or learned from a true expert. There is a bar here, so I guess this place might be popular at night. If you come for lunch, especially when there's a major convention in town, expect to wait. Fortunately, I got a seat right away at the bar, which was the last seat available. The one thing that bugged me about this seat, however, was the water dripping on me from the ventilation/duct pipes above. None of it got in my food but it was still annoying and needs to be looked at/fixed. read more

I dream about this place - the ramen is SSSSSOOOO good. We sat at the bar and watch them make our gyoza from scratch. The broth is super flavorful and all the ingredients were prefect -- from the bok choy to the pork shoulder. The place is really small so expect to wait but it's worth it. The wait staff kept our water glass filled. I normally don't take home leftovers but I took my leftovers home from here. I can't wait to introduce this place to my husband. read more

So the food & drink was fantastic but the service needs a lot to be desired. Our waitress Vivica needs to be trained a lot more. No disrespect to the rest of the restaurant staff. Again more training is in need & personal experience. read more

The good: food was great. There are a few good places in town where I can get good ramen and this is in my list as one of them. Also the drink from there bar was very good in flavor and strength. The bad: the place was very small with little seating. Having to wait a bit wasn't much of a time issue for us but there was really no place to wait. We had to stand at the door near a table of people who were seated and eating. Then we ended up seated at one of those tables so people coming in later and waiting were elbow to elbow with me as I ate. Kinda awkward. This was during a fairly cold evening so maybe warmer weather causes less of an issue since waiting outside would be an option. Plus they had a few unused seats outside it seemed. read more

This place was just alright. Explored San Antonio on Yelp, & was on a Ramen binge back home in Los Angeles (Ramen Mecca). Didn't have high expectations despite the great reviews: knowing the limited competition in the region, which led me to believe the skewed judgement by the locals. Ramen could have had more broth & additional flavors. Despite the average ramen, the service was excellent. read more

Disclaimer: Having lived in Japan, I'm a hard critic of local Japanese food, particularly how authentic it is. Kimura has the best ramen in the city. Period. I stopped in on a Monday night (3rd time here) and had a great little meal. One plus not to be missed is the charred edimame. The soybean appetizer tastes fantastic grilled, and I'm not sure how no other Japanese restaurants haven't figured this out yet. Had the shoyu (soy sauce) ramen with pork shoulder. Very savory. Gyoza were good, too. Honestly, never had a bad dish here. A small place downtown, the decor chic and Asian. Staff were casual and having a good time, yet service was very attentive and polite, but not overbearing. Must've been experimental playlist night because first half of my visit was 90's alternative (haven't heard the Presidents of the United States of America in about 10 years...) and then switched to electronica/house music. Pretty chill. Would be nice if this place offered sushi. However, based on your preference they may make up for it with full service craft cocktails. Good place for a business lunch or trendy date. read more
